had mine 4.5 years now, it is as you say 'sensible' but over that time it's been the most stress free ownership experience of any car I've owned. A-B without drama, I have the 1.8 vtec and turn off the econ, air con etc everything comes alive when you take it up the revs. Getting long in the tooth now but it'll be a sad day come part ex day. easy to clean up the fussy dash by fitting a modern double DIN touchscreen stereo as well 🤩 good video - covered everything a propective buyer might need to know.

I’ve just bought a red 2018 Honda civic diesel 1.6 and honestly I can’t get the car quick enough. My Kia has broken down three years in a row and it’s given me so much stress that I’d have breakdowns myself. The breakdowns were always electrical and connection faults too. I’ve been told my Kia will be going to auction but to be honest it should really be torched. I really hope my Honda civic will be minimal stress like you say, I honestly need things to go right for once haha

When I did drive economically one time as a test…. I did mange just over 700miles. It’s extremely worth it if u do long distance.

Yep, more reliable and a huge boot. The handling of the slightly newer version of this is as good as the golf. They changed the suspension, steering rack, the side windows to thicker glass, more under floor sound insulation, lined the rear wheel arches with thick carpet like stuff. Much better plastics on the dash, an Audi style feel, better exterior trim, rear spoiler and front light leds. Seat trim is nicer, but not the best quality stitching. It just looks better and I’ve had 75mpg in the summer and 65mpg in -8 degree temperatures. Best car I’ve ever owned and I’ve had a few VW products.

    by the way...
the eco cruise control is a masterpiece as it offers the option of losing a bit of speed to increase economy and you always have the option to switch to normal .....i actually use eco cruise all the time and am seldom on motorways and love the fact you can actually change gear without dropping out of cruise....
and make no mistage as an ex lotus elise long term owner the civic drives country lanes remarkably well and is fun
i actually think the civic is way under rated on reviews by drivers who could never benefit from a drivers drivers car lol

So I am in to 2 weeks of ownership of a 2016 1.6 dtec model - sport trim. I can not fault the car. I have owned a few Type R's (one EP3 and two FN2s) in the past and love Honda, I needed something more frugal as I do a 100 mile commute each day. This Car is Fantastic to drive - the Torque is stunning for a 1.6 diesel engine. I can do 60+mpg even at over 70mph on a 50 mile trip. I do have the touch screen and the reversing camera which is a must due to the rear view - but that was meant for aerodynamics - yes it's not ideal - but the car was designed to be MPG efficient that way.
It's a nice looking car, Frugal, but there is still fun to be had. Bloody love mine.
I'd Highly recommend the civic, Sensible it is, but way better than you'd think.
(BTW - I have had VW Golfs, BMW 3 series, - this is far better.
The other car in the household is an 18 plate Polo - that replaced a Golf. That's a great little runaround for city driving)

@@pawballer1964I’ve got a 65 reg Gen 9 facelift Sport 1.6 diesel, and the handling isn’t as responsive as I would like. It’s a bit wobbly in the corners. Even though it’s a Sport, the suspension is standard height, as per all the rest in the range (except the Type R). The mk5 Golf Sport I had previously handled better. Other than this, everything else is really good about the car. Road tax is free also. A decent alternative to the Focus and Astra.

  • @gregnorth1982

Thanks for the review. FYI, econ mode is designed specifically to drop a couple of miles an hour on cruise control. It also affects your aircon output. Normal cruise on any car constantly adapts engine speed to maintain speed over ground. This is inherently inefficient, as fuel economy is gained through more progressive transitions through engine rpm. Econ mode purposely builds in a lag to smooth out these transitions, resulting in a natural lag in speed over ground when you encounter a hill. Therefore, if they took that lag out of econ mode you would have no difference in fuel efficiency which would mean econ mode would just be a button that did nothing but choke your aircon.

I'll definitely get another, probably a 1.6

  • @TheRg191
    @TheRg191 Год назад +9

    I’ve got the 2.2 2012 diesel. I’ve owned it for 9 years.
It’s had thousands of pounds in repairs in the last 12 months. (Clutch & flywheel, glow plugs, disks and pads, alternator, battery) but with the miles I’ve put on it (well over 100k) I’m not surprised.
The leather seats are getting a little bit worn and I’d worn a hole in the drivers mat (bought a new one from Honda) but it still drives like it did when I bought it.
Personally I like the quick, sharp steering on A roads. I think it corners way better than a golf. The steering is way more responsive and the gear change has a better, shorter throw.
The rides a bit hard for our pot hole riddled roads in the U.K. and the sound insulation isn’t the best- the golf is better for that.
Rear visibility is definitely a weak point,I agree with you there, at least the 9th gen comes with a reversing camera as standard- had to have one fitted for the same reason to my 8th gen civic back in the day.
It’s broken down once in nine years and still got me to the nearest garage when the alternator failed.
I average 53 mpg all year round and I don’t drive it gently.
On a mostly motorway/A road run I’ve seen 60mpg+ regularly which isn’t bad for the bigger older diesel. £20 road tax too.
Can’t complain at some bigger expenses every five years or so. No cam belt to change which beats out any of the VW rivals and servicing isn’t too expensive. It’s been insanely cheap to run, I’m hoping to run it for a few years yet!
I’ve owned loads of Hondas- my uncle used to manage a main dealer so maybe I’m a bit biased, had a 2004 Accord EX, a 2006 civic EX GT, and the 2012 civic EX GT has been with me since 2014.
In my experience they’re bullet proof if you look after them, diesels have never been something Honda’s been famous for but I’ve never had anything other than wear and tear items fail.
The clutches are the biggest weak point on Honda diesels mechanically and they’re an expensive fix-a lot of Labour involved I’ve had one replaced on every Honda diesel I’ve had.
The glow plug change was pricey too, they’re buried down at the back of the engine to the point even the wiper arms and windscreen drain has to come out- if you ever get a PGM-Fi code on the display that’s most likely the glow plugs.
But they don’t need replacing till at least 100k miles.
The 1.6 is better to work on I’ve been told as the engine doesn’t absolutely fill the engine bay so the glow plugs are easier to get to.

Even though this car only has 118bhp, it's 300NM of torque deliveres an excellent level of power. A 0-60 time of roughly 9 secs.
The build of the civic is excellent. A great family hatchback that you can rely on. It is not designed for a racing mindset but rather a safe car providing less hassle when it comes to regular maintainance and finance. It won't jerk your body when you accelerate hard but it will still get you moving when you need it.

About the speed reduction when cruising in eco, they did it to maximise the fuel efficiency till the last drop. In diesel civic only the cruise control and the climate control are affected by eco mode and not the actual engine mapping, so just drive it in the normal mode, won't make a difference, except of you are an extremist hunting for amazing mpg and if so, the car will deliver without issues. I had this car for 300.000km and in my humble opinion is fun to drive, not as much as a Focus, but better than Golf and the rest non premium brands.

    1) I have the CIvic Tourer of that era. So i don't have the bar in the rear window.
    2) Less buttons with the infotainment system + pick up a call or to dial is as easy or bad on previous cars i had (2020 Astra, Golf 6)
    3) Cruise Control, i agree, it takes quite a while in ECO mode to catch up in case you're on a hill. I have the 1.8 petrol, so it is not related to the 1.6 diesel.
    4) I specifically chose the engine version because i came from a 3 cylinder turbo. Compared to this, the 1.8 is a beast in terms of how smooth it runs and especially how it sounds. I had the 3 cylinder for two years, never again. Sounds like a rattling toolbox and it will give you headaches because of DI, LSPI, oil sump, belt in oil and all that.
The Civic needs some petrol and some new oil every ~ 10,000 km and it gives you no further issues.
Would i buy it again? Definitely.

Just bought a 2013 one of these with the 1.8 petrol engine. It's really low mileage with full Honda service history. I think it's a fantastic car. It's really good on fuel also and goes fairly swiftly when you flog it. Can't really think of anything bad to say about it. I used to have a 2018 GTD as a company car, honestly would never pay what prices they command. This just has more character, would love the Type R version of it, to me it's the best looking Civic Type R the FK2. Sure others might disagree though. Just didn't fancy a diesel, do a lot of town driving and also maintain the car myself. There's way less to go wrong with a normally aspirated petrol car, with port injection like the 1.8 and easier to work on. But read that both the diesel engines are good in these. Think the car handles really well personally, there's not loads of feel through the electric power steering, but the Golf is no different at all in that respect.

I was really going to buy the Honda civic but there are hidden things I found out with some between the year 2012-2016
The outer casing of the wiring were made from Soya witch vermin would like to chew through the wires,
The clutch when replacing is a pain to get to so labor cost end up costing more ,
Tyre wear prematurely on the inner or outer due to the way the suspension is built,
Many had suffered with broken coil suspension spring way be for time,
Due to its torque the front wheels are a bit less grip on bends specially in the wet, people say you can`t feel the wheels so much through the steering on the road ,
But my main issue seams to be the rust underneath they seem to corrode quick for there age than other manufacturers ,and the top see through protected lacquer on some models had peeling issues for there age, One of the years between what I stated above suffered with engine crack in the block, and electrical issues,
2016 Engine was apparently not so good,
The best ones were the early models 2006-2007 etc but there sub frames and suspension would be ready for scrap unless kept in garage and away from salty rain, and cared for,
Do like the magic seats in the back though,
So would I still have one , I would be on the fence, They are reliable but depending on the model and year, like the more modern cars today they start to have issues at 50,000 thou

Had both the Mk.9 and the Mk.10 Civics, the Mk.9 was a manual diesel which was totally reliable and averaged 60 mpg. The Mk.10 was a 1.0 cvt (126bhp) only averaged 40mpg but was a much nicer car than the old one with loads of kit as standard (ie adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist ) and cornered much better than the old car.

with your point about the uphill cruise control in eco mode, I think you could argue it's more economical to not try and keep the same speed on a flat as on an incline. It's probably better to use less revs and lose a bit of speed, then regain that speed once you're on a flat.
