    The driving experience you mentioned with the weighted rear end swinging out is the same with all M/R cars. They are meant to brake early then apply even power through the apex. It takes a keen driver to get the most out of a M/R setup, but when you do, there is nothing like it. This is the same reason Porsche is legendary for early braking, due to the weight tansfer, so the corner flows smooth. FWD have the added benefit of mechanical grip, and are infinitely more forgiving. You can just power off in a corner if you come in over speed and off apex, and the weight will allow the tires to grip once wheel speed is down. In an M/R car, if you do that, the instant reverse weight transfer will cause you to spin. Good vid either way, though I'm not sure this will get read. lol

    • @Ozem_Israel
      @Ozem_Israel 5 лет назад +3

      I agree with most of your points, but fwd having some advantage of mechanical grip? That doesn't seem likely with the front tires doing all the work.by the time the wheel speed is down enough to have grip again the rear drive car will have been down to the the next turn.

    • @jimmytran5328
      @jimmytran5328 5 лет назад +3

      Borninvincibl3 FPV but it’s true. FWD cars do have better grip. That’s why they get much more understeer due to all the weight in the front.

      Absolutely right!
      The 3rd gen MR2 compliments a more advanced driver. I bought my first one at age 20 and it taught me to respect the law of balance and how to shift the weight throughout a turn. They have a high grip threshold but once you’ve reached the limits of your tires you better keep calm, slam the gas and counter steer

    Hi Danny was interesting to hear your opinion against the s2k, I originally built the Toyonda instead of buying an s2k, three years ago the build cost was the same as a stock s2k. Mr2 are not the easiest car to drive on the limit but that's half the fun learning new skills and adapting. It's great car on the track shame you didn't have time to find the limits. 😉 1 more sub.

    Track day, Toyonda, daily, S2000. That MR2 with big fat rear tires, a Supercharger, and a little bit more dialed in suspension/Sway bar setup though, and you have a beast of a car. I guess the same could be said for the S2000, but I would rather have something that feels like a baby supercar, which, with the mid-rear engined MR2, it would kind of feel like

    Mr2 hands down. Rear Mid-engine RWD and lightweight. Great base for a very fast and nimble car with a low center of gravity and with a weight distribution that if you know how to drive it will reward you well. The s2000 is NICE no doubt but the the learning curve and reward for the driver is a bit higher in the mr2 for me. There's just something about that engine being behind u that makes the car feel legit.

    It's great to hear a Yorkshire voice on a vid like this! I also have a stock S2000, but it's a 2005 with the F20C2 engine, same rev limit but a few uprated components like the valve retainers. Also suspension is different, less tail happy than the early S2000's. Also, when I got mine at 92,000 miles the rear drop links were a bit worn and I replaced them with Hardrace drop links. This has made a big difference to handling, feels a lot better when accelerating hard out of corners. Absolutely love my S2k

    I'm so conflicted on japanese sports cars. I had an SW20 mr2 for 5 years. I loved that car. It was great to drive and totally reliable. I owned it for 80,000 miles and it went to 140,000 miles.
    The sills rusted away and despite two years of welding it never recovered. Almost everything else about it worked. Pop up headlamps., Engine, Electric Windows, T-Bar never leaked, Stereo etc.
    Toyota knew how to make great cars at that time.
    I even managed to sell it for a few hundred because the leather interior was perfect.
    But here's the thing.
    I bought a BMW 2002 320i
    It has less HP (advertised) than the mr2.
    It's way faster.
    That MR2 engine was great and it loved revs. Above about 5400rpm it was a flying machine.
    The BMW is like that anywhere above 2000 and there's an appreciable bump at about 4500.
    I loved my mr2 but if I was going to own one again I'd have to do the V6 swap.
    Maybe Tubo it at some point.
    :-)
    I just want a really good looking t-top again.
    I miss my MR2.
    Luv and Peace.

      Update : I bought a BMW Z4 a few years back. It's s2.5 SI M sport version. About 215HP and M suspension.
      It goes really well and is a blast to drive.
      Not fast by today's standards but with the sports suspension its pretty quick over b roads and I'm regularly held up by much faster hot hatches.
      The I6 N52 is torquey and has double vanos so revs to 7000 and makes power all the way to redline.
      It's intoxicating to drive.
      It has good torque at 2500 rpm but sings if you floor it.
      Such a good engine and lightweight too. It's a Magnesium head and an aluminium block.
      I feel like the next car I have has to have at least 300hp and Ideally be mid engined again.
      The z4 has the engine very far back and is close to front mid engined but not quite.
      weight is till about 50/50.
      I need a Porsche Boxster 3.4s
      That's the bottom line.
      Luv and Peace.

    Close, but a tuned car is always going to require more attention to keep it in top form compared to one that is pretty much stock So if you want sporting performance and don't like fiddling with your car all the time, the S2K is probably the choice. But for many, working on the car is half the fun of ownership. For them, the Toyonda might be the way to go.
    Still, when I owned my S2000 I could never walk away from it without taking a glance back and smiling. Not sure I would get that from the Toyota no matter its performance.

    You want a directional mono lav mic. The stereo one you have noe has a large pick up pattern going around it. Ideal when you want to pick up all sounds in an environment, or a conference room full of people and you need to get from all directions.
    A mono for voice, pointed towards your mouth only should isolate the sound to where you point it.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      Thanks man! Makes sense really, the shotgun mic I have on the main camera really does only pickup where you point it... I tried it in car once but found that it would still catch quite a lot of sounds. Will try a smaller lav mic though for sure.

      Haha that's not how it works, you don't see Clarkson on Top Gear with one of those ear mounted microphones. I think they're only popular for performing artists who need the movement. @krissveismanis990 6 лет назад

      Guys that's not really how mics work. Think of a mic as an ear, directional mic (cardioid) would work in a similar way as a single ear. You can try what it would pick up by closing the other ear and hearing what's coming in. Obviously directional mic picks up less than the omnidirectional one, though in TV and movies etc. they mostly use omnidirectional mics (DPAs for 500EUR for example), they do pick up a lot of the ambient sound though, you can't just remove it like that.
      I think the audio in the car was actually pretty good, even in the MR2.

    I'm happy with the sound quality! Your dialogue is perfectly audible. The background noises (engine, vibrations, etc) aren't instrusive and add to the immersion of the video. The lavalier style (what you currently have) is probably the optimum layout if you want to minimise background noises as the mic is nearest to the audio source (your voice) you intend on recording. I appreciate wires can be cumbersome. There are wireless lavalier options but are typically very expensive and introduces more things to go wrong. Do some experimenting of different mic setups for yourself. Probably the most common mid-engine cars I see are porsche boxsters.

    why didn't u swap in a 3.5 V6 from a Camry?? isn't the torque/HP better?? I just looked it up it only weighs 170 pounds more than the 2ZZ

    Hey Danny. You got the thumbs up just as the intro was coming through the headphones.👍👍 Fantastic recommendation by DOHCtor W and great execution by the "One Man Band".👏 I loved the couple of exterior shots, but those are tough to pull off by yourself. You have to fly by (and not fuck it up), race out of the frame, then go back and hope some crackhead hasn't come by and stolen your "free camera". Or even worse, the French Polis watching the vid when you get back.😂 At any rate, you gave us some great clips. Awesome review. If the S2000 felt just a bit faster on the straights, it's probably because those tires are so RAPID.😲😶 (Please don't ban me for the corny jokes). Honestly, I've been looking at S2000s for several months. I'm in no position to buy at the moment, and this video certainly didn't make the urge go away. I think they are great cars and I may own one some day. BTW, not in the same price range, but the Boxster and Cayman are mid-engine. Between these two, it looks like you were torn on making a decision. For a stocker, the S2K is tough to beat, but the K20 MRS is a special little beast that must be respected! I appreciate your honesty in these vlogs, mate. You don't sugarcoat it... just tell it like it is.👌 Cheers, bro!

    Really good video. The problem with all these wonderful cars, in standard trim, is that they are loss leaders for the manufacturers. They struggled to sell that many of either. The MX5 had the affordable market licked for two decades and the Z4 and Boxster cornered the market for the mid-performance sports cars. The MR2 could have handled 200 bhp easily rather than 138 but it would have sold very few. All credit to the guy who modified it. Even in standard form they were great (apart for shopping) Two magic cars, with the Honda S2000 now appreciating.

  • @ZerikMarves

    The mr2 is 2200...the s2000 is 2800. That’s a huge difference in weight. If hp are exactly the same the mr2 is gonna smoke the s2000. On top of that you have crappy tires on the s2000, so the video is t exactly a great comparison. Great information and edit but the test subjects are a bit bias.

    • @dannyDC2
      @dannyDC2  6 лет назад

      HP was not the same, the S2000 has around 240bhp, the MR2 has around 200bhp. The power to weight ratios are very similar. Agreed about the tyres, they were interesting to say the least. Still very closely matched on the road though. I think on a track the MR2 would walk away, mostly because of its better tyres and lower weight.

    I don’t know CRAP about microphones but my ignorant suggestion would be to get a helmet with Bluetooth??
    Logically I would expect the helmet to block out all the road/engine noise pretty well and if the mic is inside the helmet I’d have to imagine it would pick up your voice pretty well.
    Just an idea

    Cool comparison. It's a hard one to choose one car built to be as good as another stock car but cost more. But then again don't we build them to be original. Cool josh got an s2000 though. Sadly one car I can never own being 6 foot 7. Took a ride in one once my legs don't go under dash so knees were almost as high as the top of window. Funnier than hell though. Great video.

    I could moan and criticise about your not taking into account the inability to fully adjust suspension geometry settings as standard on the MR2, comparable weight distribution etc. but the video was very enjoyable overall! You missed out the Boxster's direct competitor the Boxster as a mid-engine sports car, that incidentally isn't as engaging to drive from my experience.

    There is a learning curve with mid-engine cars. To get around the corner better you need to put your foot ON the gas for balance and stability. Too much though and it spins out.
