- On 20th January 1943, Flight Lieutenant Baron Jean de Sélys-Longchamps led a flight of 2 from RAF Manston on a ‘Rhubarb’ sortie into Belgium. Near Ghent, he and his wingman, Flight Sergeant André Blanco, attacked several trains. Ordering Blanco to return to base, de Sélys-Longchamps flew towards the capital, Brussels, to make an unauthorised attack on the Belgian Gestapo HQ. Flying low, he strafed the building successfully and proceeded to drop a Union Jack, a Belgian flag and other Belgian flags on the way back to England. On his return to Manston, de Sélys-Longchamps was reprimanded and transferred for his disobedience. He was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions, however.

Note: 6:14 is meant to say 'unauthorised'!!!
Historical discrepancies: de Sélys-Longchamps flew a Typhoon Mk. Ib (car door) which is not modelled in IL-2. Flares have been used to represent the flags dropped by de Sélys-Longchamps as the simulator does not model flags.
The stripes on the Typhoons are correct and were used on Typhoons to avoid friendly fire incidents until 1944. falkeeinsgreatplanes.blogspot.com/2014/10/hawker-typhoon-ib-56-squadron-april-1943.html?m=1
The Baron's father had been arrested and tortured to death by the Gestapo for resisting the German occupation The Germans admitted to 4 killed, Belgian resistance sources report 30 killed or Wounded
in the attack and building required 6 weeks to repair the damage caused
More cinematic History! Great narration as always.
Thanks for this great account of courage and initiative!!
i have been there on the 453 Avenue Louise. there is a large golden coloured commemoration statue in his rememberance. the gestapo building has the inscriptions left by the resistance prisoners on the cellar walls protected by government decree . the avenue leading up to the building was the perfect guiding tool as it sits at the junction of the two roads.A young woman s secret war book called inside the gestapo elaborates on the story. She was working in the back offiice of the building when she witnessed it all.A lucky escape for Helene Moszkiewiez
Together with my son, we watch your movies instead of cartoons, awesome content!
Your videos are the best, Soto! Flight Lieutenant Baron Jean de Sélys-Longchamps is a hero!
Great video! Amazing story and great narration. Well done!
Besides how be fantastically great these vids are, I just really enjoy looking at the detail of both aircraft and the landscape.
Once again, brilliant work 👍
Only have vague memories of the previous version of this video but I think I like this one better. Great work as always.
Thankyou, the old one (which is now unlisted) had no narration and had a few details missing ruclips.net/video/uajDaYXtqAA/видео.html.
@@sotocinematics Mark Felton did a video about this story some years ago. When I saw this recommended I didn't hesitate to click!
You guys are thee best!! 👍
Thankyou! Btw it is just a one man show ;)

Fantastic work, very enjoyable. How about a video about Robert Tuck?
Awesome video history!
Moar of these please guys. These are excellent!!
Brave and tragic story at the same time.
Still the most incredible tale of personal revenge I have ever heard.
proud to be a Belgain ,
Ten years ago exactly we visited this building Avenue Louise in Bruxelles. I took pictures in the rundabout where is located jean de selys Longchamp's statue.
Now i let my imagination Guess who was the flight of the Typhoon, and After the noise of the engine, the fire of 4 guns and the impact of the shells against concrete wall
He did all this before 09:45 !!! - Shot up and destroyed four trains ,Killed four Gestapo soldiers in raid on Brussels and landed at his home airfield for Coffee , Eggs and Bacon at 09: 45 !!! l'm never normally out of bed before 10 AM if l can avoid it !!
Well done!
The building still exists? Interesting.
Do a video on operations Mana & Chowhound
I don't think planes underwings would have been painted with invasion stripes prior to D-Day.
Nor do I. Now, the stripes marking shown here much differs from the D day marking, that was nearest the fuselage.
olé por el bravo piloto
He had been forbidden to attack this building because a Gestapo officer was a double agent working for the English IS. By killing him, the Gestapo found lists of resistance fighters, which led to numerous arrests and the dismantling of various Belgian resistance networks!
And so, at the end of the day, he was an idiot, not a hero.
And your source for that is what?
A belgium story 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪!!
nice :D
İ dont know if theres any Typhoon mk1b aces or Typhoons had any air to air kills after normandy landings
Man of the month dog of the day 🤣
Excellent video, Did he survive the war?
It says at the end of the video lad
@@TheHarvHR ok lol clicked off too early cheers
Killed August 1943 when crashed trying to land his damaged fighter after a mission over the continent

Baron Jean de Sélys Longchamps fell victim to a structural design flaw in the early model Typhoons. The tail section was prone to metal fatigue and broke off during hard manouvering. This was remedied with an extra rib along the upper section of the tail, but not before quite a few pilots were killed. The Baron was too low to the ground to bail out when it happend to him. A sad loss of a brave and resourceful man. He did at least avenge the murder of his father by the Gestapo. However, one of the people killed in the attack was a civilian with contacts in the Belgian Resistance. When his body was searched, a list of many Resistance workers was found in his pockets. That led to many arrests and executions of Resistance members. A sad end to the story.
Thanks for this insight! Sad that planes were rushed into combat without proper safety checks in war time.
What was the resistance civilian doing in Gestapo HQ? Sad if that’s the case but maybe the moral affect was huge
@@jthomas4361 a resistance member with names of other resistence members in his pockets i find hard to swallow
One can just expect a story to discredit this action being heralded by the Gestapo.
And, conversely, one can just expect a story to discredit the Gestapo's story being heralded by the Resistance.
And one can just expect the British air force to cover up the Resistance story with a report that the hero had been duly reprimanded.
I recently met someone who, in his young years, had been a member of the Resistance in Brussels. According to him, the Resistance, at the time, certified that the operation had been carefully planned so as to avoid any backfire.
Of course, this also was only to be expected, but then, how can one put an end to the story?
Thats why "ours is not to reason why..." is a thing in the Army. They must have been flipping at Whitehall. "Everyone thinks he's a hero, we know otherwise but can't say".
😂😂😂😂😂😂 oh le con, bien joué !.
the typhoon would not have had D-Day invasion stripes on the wings in 1943.
No, the stripes are correct and were used on Typhoons to avoid friendly fire incidents until 1944. falkeeinsgreatplanes.blogspot.com/2014/10/hawker-typhoon-ib-56-squadron-april-1943.html?m=1
All that detail…and IL-2 gets the invasion stripes wrong. Odd.

Les bandes blanches et noires n'existaient pas en janvier1943 .
