- Throughout the Second World War, there were many execution methods used to condemn civilians and prisoners. One of the most common method was using firing squad, and millions of people across German occupied lands were executed inside of pits. These pits became the mass graves of often hundreds or thousands of people, and still today many of these killings pits remain undiscovered.

What unbearable horror for the victims. It’s like a film only real life. I would have gone mad with despair. Thank god I have not had to join any armies or kill any enemies. I can watch these documentaries with a sense of detachment because they do not convey the sounds or the smells, just the images which are bad enough. Thank you Simon for keeping history alive for my generation and the ones to come presuming we don’t blow each other up with atomic bombs.

The regular army- the Wehrmacht--did about 50% of the mass killings. In 2001 there was an exhibition about that in Hamburg.

I agree that the Churchill strategy of bombing German cities, especially from mid-1943 through 1945 to the end of formal hostilities, wreaked unprecedented destruction on Germany. Naturally, I agree that this destruction of German infrastructure made Germany's stellar prior care for residents of the work camps impossible, resulting in hunger and inadequate medical provisions. These depredations of the Allies' bombing campaign created the conditions whereby typhus and other terrible diseases could, and did, flourish at intervals in camps, especially those which were located in Poland. These particular camps were hit so hard at times that they earned the dread title of "death camps." [One can see this problem of wholesale, maniacal bombing currently in Gaza, Levant, where death from the sky vies with death from diseases, greatly enhanced by lack of food and medicine.] The tragedy of unconditional surrender demanded by the Allies meant that any hope of a rational cessation of hostilities while negotiations were pursued would not take place. Winston Churchill, by then hopelessly alcoholic and incompetent by 5 PM, FDR, by then struggling with very serious health issues, and Joseph Stalin, the increasingly suspicious-minded dictator of the USSR, were a dread set of leaders for the Allies. Since Hitler was largely trying to cope as a sort of ragout of drugs provided by his personal doctor, he had lost any vision other than a grand tragic doom for Germany (barring a miracle). What a mess! It was very sad to see Germany, one of our last links to ten-tribe Israel (and the 200,000 of Judah), fall into such a situation. "Absolam! Absolam! How hath the mighty fallen!" From bondage to bondage, it is tolled.

If only to the many instances...That if heeded... The Great War would never have happened... Nor Hitler... Nor WW2... Thus seeing 4 fine Empires retained going from strength to strength.

I doubt the outcome of July 4th in UK will do much to make it better.

That's true. I think the main factor that distinguishes the nazis was the extent to which they mechanized and industrialized their death machine. The planning and calculation for efficiency, the train systems, the gas chambers with connecting ramps to ovens, and the whole spreadsheet-like approach makes their deeds particularly disturbing.

@@tedbaxter5234 Herero and Nama genocide, WW1, co-complicit by their own admission in the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust and WW2 are why there are thousands upon thousands of memorials located from south Africa to the Arctic circle to the victims who lost their lives to the germans. Many of these memorials have been erected by the germans, and many in germany itself. They also maintain entre buildings and cemeteries as memorials where they had perpetuated unspeakably heinous crimes. Definitely unequalled.

The entire North American population did just as heinous decimation of the original people who were here generations before European races emigrated. They expropriated each others’ land, but didn’t murder entire nations nor decimate the primary food source for all of the indigenous races just for the hell of it.
