Nier Automata is the single greatest game I have ever played. Phenomenal game. Glad its at your top spot. Nier replicant would be a close second for me. Also agree with another comment. Kingdom Hearts 1 2 or 3 are great Action RPGs. Great Video
I find automata to be unequivocally the greatest game ever made. I call it the crown jewel of gaming for what it accomplishes. It's changed my life (certainly made me a lot poorer, I spent over 20k on merchandise so far, going to a concert this January, hyped!). I grew up playing video games since I was 3. Started on the ps2. Games became the only thing I did for fun, with some occasional drawing. It wasn't until playing automata that I realized I LOVE the game I'm playing. I've never loved any games before. I mean genuine love. Not "I'm really enjoying this" no no no, more like "I adore everything about this, it's now a part of me". I've enjoyed games before, but this game put into perspective how amazing games can be, and how they can transcend their medium to not just be good games but be what some would call works of art. Easiest recommendation for a game I'd ever give anybody.
Clearly Nier Automata is the best Nier. But since there were 2 Final Fantasies, and other comments covered the worthiness of Ys VIII, I'd like to add that I think Nier Replicant 1.22... deserves a shout out as well. Once you fully realize the implications of the repercussions of your actions in that game, it mind-f***'s you more than Automata. And the combat was revamped (over original Nier) to be extremely similar to Automata.
I think replicant is much less of a mindfuck with it's plot twist than automata is with its route C plot twist. I was like "alright then" when the plot twist happened in replicant. But in automata when route C started and I saw that it was entirely new story, and seeing the BEGINNING of this new part of the story up until the tower rises.....most awestruck moment of my life. I was just in complete disbelief at what I was playing. Then the title card shows itself for the 2nd time and I just got insane chills up my body. It's less of a plot twist in terms of information like replicants was, but it was a plot twist in the sense that I wasn't expecting there to be entirely unseen and new plot and content that late into the game. The entire rest of route C is 1 big existential dread driven mindfuck. To me there's nothing more captivating in gaming than playing automata for the first time and experiencing route C for the first time.

GJ man, you pretty much got ALL my favorite games. With only Strikers and Code Vein that I'm less a fan of. In my book I probably put YS 8 in either since you put 2 games in the same series anyway (FF16 and 7), and probably also Berseria since that is what I consider the best in combat for the tales series. Nier Automata is definitely number 1
Went through Scarlet Nexus and Arise real quick back in 2021. Both of them use Namco's approach of taking ideas people think are simple, offhand, and exploring what makes them complicated. Scarlet Nexus shows that there's a lot more to human connections than just a warm fuzzy feeling, and Tales of Arise demonstrates that the idea of freedom is much more intellectually complex than people tend to to think it is. Ys has been in my desk for ages, so I'm looking forward to getting around to it. :) Oddly though, I have played Astral Chain and couldn't get into it, not for any reasons relating to gameplay or story... which you would think would be all there is to it, but it was the bizarre organization of the objectives, along with a few other inhospitable quirks, that wound up driving me away. It's kind of like a mix of normal rpgs littered with minor and major objectives, crammed into a 15 minute Devil May Cry stage, I suppose, and the save system doesn't seem to allow for stopping mid-mission... not exactly anyway. You can stop, but you'll lose some story progress and also seemingly lose all side event progress, even including things you did before saving. Seems to just be in the nature or Platinum games to be weird like that, and while I doubt it's an issue for plenty of people, I think it's probably a sign I should stay away from their games, even if I wish otherwise. :/ One game I'd have tossed on my own list of similar games is Star Ocean 6. It's similar to a Tales game, but with more manual control on things like character actions and builds. The split in the story isn't as developed as Scarlet Nexus, though you do get a different party member on either route, and it has great main characters and a neat jetpack feature that plays into the traversal and the combat. :)
I've been working on 100%ing Trials of mana since 6 days ago. I recommend the game for sure, it's great. I think I'll have my 100% in like 5~8 hours more playtime.
I can't agree more with the first three, finish both routes of scarlet nexus and enjoy it a lot, tales of arise is great, and monstrum nox has more fun battle and exploration than YS VIII. The rest are kind of games that I want to play as well (not yet) except the number one, Nier Automata is absolute masterpiece, so glad that I 100% it, one of the best gaming experience. Oh wait, I've played code vein as well, it's great combination of action anime and a little bit soulslike (not too hard, which is perfect for me). Great list!!
Interesting that you included Code Vein on a list of JRPGs... I started playing it as a souls-like since I love the souls-games and some of the souls-likes that have come out, but I just didn´t click with Code Vein and couldn´t get into it. I´m thinking about giving it another shot but not thinking about it as a soulslike but as a JRPG with souls elements, and I actually believe I will appreciate it more that way. 🙂
I think this is a great list. I honestly do not have to add very much to this. Personally I also like the Atelier Ryza games. While they are admittedly, not 100% action based, the turn-based aspect is severely turned down. You are right about Ys IX and Ys VIII. While I like the latter the moset, it's undeniable that the added vertical aspect of Ys IX makes it a better game combat wise. Another game that has comparable action with Ys, is Tokyo Xanadu eX+. It has the same drawback as Ys with repetitive battles, but is nevertheless a fun game. There are more action based games I like, but they are very niche and not something everybody will appreciate (like for example Dusk Diver and Dusk Diver 2).

Mc was a bit too ugly for me to into control but it had good combat for sure
@@TheRoleplayer40k I mean it's your opinion, but I think it's a bit unfair. Jesse might not be 2B, but isn't ugly at all imho. Especially when u compare it to other Western games of today like Starfield, Outer Worlds, Spiderman 2,...
And I watched a studio tour with the actress of Jesse as a guide and it's unbelievable how close the actress and in-game model look, so Remedy didn't do her dirty, which is a good thing either.
But yeah, I might be a bit on the "biased site", cause I like Control so much :)
