I hear you on so many of these experiences. The older I get the more I appreciate normal to easy difficulty settings. I frequently use guides for every RPG if possible, too. My backlog is too big, there’s too many good games coming out in the future, and not enough time for me to waste game sessions wandering around unintentionally because I’m lost, beating my head against a wall with a ridiculously tough boss fight, or scratching my head at an annoying, obtuse puzzle.

This is why they put a physical line you can follow in Xenoblade 3 so players wouldn't get lost in verticality. But honestly I didn't have that much of a problem navigating in XC 2, but it totally depends on the person, some people remember paths really well after just going somewhere once and I have a friend who doesent even remember how to get to a paths near his house

Star Ocean's balancing issues probably stem from its crafting system and how powerful the items are. Nina can, at a certain point, just upgrade ores and allow you to make a weapon with Dark Matter or something super early, so deciding how to balance the game becomes an odd puzzle to say the least.
Each advancement in story comes with advancement to item crafting on top of that, but it's optional, so if you don't use it, the difficulty spikes become more apparent. Beyond that, bosses can have mechanics they're trying to enforce, which can be confusing if you're not sure if you're doing something mechanically wrong or just have a major stat disadvantage.
Star Ocean 4, I think, held its balance a bit more until a certain point because its crafting was limited by your party. Later on, you get Synthesis and it goes haywire at which point the game throws a sequence of fights with high level enemies from later in the game at you which also comes with mechanical expectations. The enemies have a major priority factor plus a couple of vulnerabilities that can make a critical difference in the fight, one of which is way easier to take advantage of if you've used Synthesis.

  • @poisonarc
    @poisonarc Год назад +3

I really fully agree with what you said about the new Star Ocean. It's like so many new JPRGs are just built quick and dirty in the Unreal Engine and even though they're drastically different they feel kind of same-same. Further the new Star Ocean game upsets me because the AI teammates just get destroyed in the boss fights and it's just a slog to fight with 1 character.

Metal Max Xeno Reborn is a lot better than the original, I finished a couple of months ago. The beginning is hard, but it gets manageable after you get a full party. You need to avoid the first couple of wanted monsters, and after you get three tanks you'll get them. In fact, grind is minimal and the last boss was piss easy compared to my tanks. My main issue is that the game just ends out of the blue, right when it was getting good.

Final boss? But just his normal version or his buffed version?
Nonbuffed on normal difficulty is easy when you get some healing skill like get hp on block.
Ppl say that buffed version on normal is hard as nonbuffed on highest difficulty so I stared farming permament stat boost to max them and maybe, someday I will kill his buffed version on highest difficulty.

    • @tombrooke1281
      @tombrooke1281 Год назад +1

The last boss in zestiria isn't hard, it's just cycling the right characters in a certain order before you lose access to them. It is harder on the hardest difficulty which is required for the platinum trophy however if you do an entire run-through on the hardest difficulty the equipment drops and skills on them are much better and allow you to make a much stronger team. I really didn't like the levelling and equipment system on zestiria because levelling made very little difference, your equipment set up was far more important and the awkward battle camera angles were a pain at times, it was nice that namco tried something new but it didn't really pay off in this instance in my opinion and is one of the weaker entries to the Tales of series of which I am a huge fan.

    • @theoaremevano3227
      @theoaremevano3227 Год назад

@@tombrooke1281 : The fact you could optionally go up to an insane amount of grind on any item wasn't the best choice. It makes it hard to gauge how much you're expected to have your equipment ground to be at certain points in the game, and getting stronger items later causes more confusion as to what avenue is worth pursuing.
I ended up with a completely broken setup revolving around skills and using a lot of item from the first two towns, but that required a lot of understanding of how the skills worked and how to fuse with them. I like the customization potential, but there's nothing natural about the process of understanding it. XD

And I'm fully on your side about the True Ending stuff. Of course, having a different, harder boss for TE is one thing but not ridiculously overpowered. If they want to hinder players to get TE too easily they could just hide it behind some convoluted requirements instead.

I don't think there's anything wrong with "souls culture" mainly for a few reasons. 1) you know what you're getting yourself into, and 2) there are ways around the difficulty. I think I would be fine if the games added more obvious ways to exploit difficulty (let's say obvious weaknesses, elemental, damage types, etc) that didn't require massive investment to go out and procure those methods. I think that's my one issue with these types of games where they have weaknesses, but you almost never have the resources to level up that particular weakness.

The level cap was there because the player has such a massive advantage to begin with.
You have +1 crafted equipment, 4 slots for overpowered items to buff/debuffs and instantly heal 75% of your max HP, the AI doesn't see the buff cards, and the ability to scout the enemy to set up a team that's strong against their setup.
Not to mention that the enemy AI is weak overall and makes a lot of stupid decisions.

I've actually played and beat the remake Metal Max Xeno Reborn game for the Switch.
I highly recommended it to anyone and its fun. The only sad thing is the game is too short. Get it while its cheap on the Switch.
I really enjoyed it because its not everyday you find a JRPG series where you get to battle by piloting tanks with anime characters involved. 😃
( Still with that said its a shame about the sequel being cancelled. I think it had more to do with a merger situation with why it got cancelled. )
The first part starts off a little tricky and you just need some patience. Once you find more characters, vehicles, weapons and even upgrades the game
gets much easier. Also some enemies have weaknesses if you know where to target. It just takes some time.
( But you do need to avoid some of the optional Bounty Bosses at first until your stronger. Once you beat these optional bosses
your in for some really helpful upgrades. )
I could understand your frustration with Crystalis. I consider it an NES classic by SNK.
It is indeed a grind, but if you play it for a while without an FAQ you would get stuck on some parts since the NPCs give you very cryptic
    clues.
My advice make sure to Level your character up when you can. Some enemies are actually stronger and your character
many need to get stronger this way or you may actually need a different sword/upgrade to the sword to deal combat damage.
Once you do this it gets much easier.
What I also loved about this game was the variety of environments you explore as well along with what happens by the ending.
I don't want to spoil it but I hope you give this game another chance sometime.
Dragon Quest 6 for me was really good in the series. It took a long time for us to get an English port
of it since we didn't get the SNES version so I gladly take this remake.
I really liked some of the characters in this one and what they do later on,
but it does take a while for the game to get better. Once it does you get interested in seeing how it ends.
The game is actually short compared to other games in the DQ franchise.
Still thanks as always for your JRPG videos Eric Landon RPG.
Because of you I've discovered some awesome JRPGs that I now enjoy playing when I get the chance to play them. 🤩

I’ve been 12 meters, feet, knots or whatever measurement of distance the game uses from a quest turn in point and completely missed the guy because the tracker went all the way to the left when I ran past him even though he was on my right, so I turned to get it recentered about 100 degrees and noticed it was still to the far left of the tracking bar, I had to stop moving and spin the camera to find the guy standing under an awning.. any new area is a nightmare, and thanks to other games (thx Pokémon) I’m used to y being for the map and x being for menu.. again at 68 hours I haven’t broken the habit enough for that not to piss me off, especially with how long it takes to exit out and actually open up the menu.

I notice that a lot of JRPG-frustration comes down to the game wanting you to play in a very specific way. Rarely does the genre offer roundabout ways of solving common problems, like redeeming a favor with a NPC you did a sidequest for earlier to help resolve a mcguffin hunt or using your money to hire explorers or even soldiers. I guess that would require innovating a bit and designing systems beyond just a linear plot with battles
This is particularly egregious in something like Star Ocean where destructive technologies should exist alongside the *manufacturing* of such. seriously don't tell me a crashing ship can lose the cargo hold, vehicle bay, workshop, armoury, communications, shuttle bay, and ship-mounted weapons all beyond repair and without the crew being obliterated as well

Sir Erick, I understand that you didn't like Tactics Ogre Reborn due to it's nature of being a repetitive game and endless amount of grinding in the Palace of the Dead for multiple hours of gameplay in order to have the best spells and equipment and not to mention the endless random battles that annoyed me sometimes to the point of going burnout and as a final nail in the coffin the archer class (especially Canopus) are absurdly broken not just for your team but also to the enemy AI Team as well which insane (but luckily they finally fixed in the TO Reborn version) But I understand that not everyone would like Tactical RPGS because it requires a lot patience, preparation, and strategic thinking in order to finish this game but for me I still love it despite all of its flaws and frustrations occurred all throughout my gaming experience since I played this game as a 17 year old back then and as of now I am currently finishing this game for the 6 time for the PSP version using PPSSPP emulator (I finish all the 3 routes Law, Neutral, and Chaos respectively with 2 endings that for the TO
LUCT fans we already know about this one or two but if you are newcomer to this series I highly suggest that you play the side story called Tactics Ogre - The Knight Of Lodis for the Game Boy Advance as a starting point since it serves as a side story for the one of the main antagonist of TO LUCT and as a training ground to learn the nuts & bolt of how Tactical RPGS work imo but they are still many games out there with this genre that you can still play outside of TO series like Octopath Traveler, Fire Emblem (except for Thracia 776 since I considered that game as one of the hardest and frustrating FE game of all time for the FE franchise imo), Vandal Hearts series, Front Mission series, Final Fantasy Tactics series, etc) since I haven't buy a Nintendo Switch for now and my CP isn't going to run smoothly on Skyline emulator (which is the Nintendo Switch Emulator on android & IOS) so I have to play on an emulator that it can only fit for the CP Specs.

I might get some hate for this, but I'm gonna put it out there anyway. The only RPG that has made me rage quit recently was Octopath Traveler.
I completed the final chapter for 5 out of the 8 characters, then I got to Therion. He was like level 20 or something because I didn't particularly like him as a character and I already had Tressa filling the role of thief. When I got to his final chapter there were 3 different items I had to steal before I could actually start the quest, and I only had a 1% success chance.
Octopath Traveler 2 had the same problem, so I tried to avoid it by putting Throne on my A-team. Unfortunately I ran into a similar problem with Agnea. There was a quest where the only way to receive a mandatory quest item is for Agnea to be at level 35. Octopath 2 made enough improvements over the original to actually make me enjoy the game overall, so this time I actually did the grind. Still, I found it very annoying that both games have arbitrary level requirements.

final fantasy tactics. The original one on the PS1 or PSX
There was a boss level. Two dancers, I think - or maybe assassins. I forget. Their petrify or seal ability ALWAYS one shots my guys.
Got so ticked off, i shut it down and ate cookies with chocolate milk.
Final Fantasy 8. I didn't know that the enemies power, scale with my level. I trained hard to get my characters to 40-50 so that the rest of the game would be easy.
It did not. Even the most basic of enemies will crush me. To hell with that game. It was the only FF I didn't get to finish. Watched my brother do it instead.
Valkyria Revolution --- Just because. And it was just a hack and slash. If I wanted to do that, I'd go to my Dynasty Warriors collection.
Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2 on the DS. The bosses there were absolutely OP. Granted, I wasn't exactly an expert on RPG then with the builds and arms, but god, were those bosses tough.
Thankfully the latter of the series were tolerable and I was eventually able to beat all of them.

Frankly funny enough! I love Tactics Ogre because Final Fantasy Tactics was my "bane" as you're feeling with Tactics Ogre! I never liked FFT gameplaywise. But it's story interested me, and when I learned it was the offspring of Tactics Ogre! I tried that one out and despite it's own annoyances! I found I clicked more with. Tactics Ogre Reborn I like alot more then the original BECAUSE it got rid of the annoying shit I hated in the PSP version. It's the perfect version of the game! But I can see if you disliked the game in general, a "perfect version" isn't going to change your mind. I will admit despite saying Perfect. Keeping how Dungeons worked sticking the same (instead of adding maybe a restock shopping function somewhere in the dungeon for resting, especially in the final dungeon! I mean THE FUCKING PALACE OF THE DEAD HAS ONE IN IT ITSELF FOR GODSAKES! Was pretty shortsighted)
XB2 out of the trilogy was annoying to play starting out, the Gatcha system of the Core Crystals WAS annoying! And took abit to get how gameplay worked. But once I did I enjoyed it! I feel that XB3 is the best because it toned down abit on specific "Spamming mechanics!" Once you undestand elemental combos, XB2 combat devolves into it once you get the right amount of blades and setup (And the multi party system is harmed abit by the fact your stuck with THREE characters in a battle party! Tora loses relevance combat wise if you don't keep up with Poppi's upgrades and he's build as a Damage Tank, so gets crippled slightly by any other roles you move Poppi to outside of that! Rex beats Zeke despite me LIKING the guy because he's too much of an all arounder to want to REMOVE him from the party and Zeke is too SHOWY at times without an increase of damage to make up for it that his attack speed is delayed, Nia's Blade Form is a double edge blessing as if you were giving her alot of the Healing type blades to benefit from her Ether specialization, then they become irrelevent once she becomes a Blade as she's the best damn healing blade......and Rex is better off using her, Pyra and Mythra and ONLY them unless you add an extra for the sake of Elemental diversity. Frankly speaking the final Party Line up for me ends up being Rex, Zeke and Morag, or pretty much Rex, Tora and Morag, worse by the fact Morag has both a Fire in Brighid and Water in Aegaeon; XB1 was still good with the fact everyone had a role they fufilled! Yes even Sharla, I found all the "alternatives" to make her "irrevent" to not be as reliable as people made them out to be and still used her! I was among those who played and beat XB1 when it first came out for the Wii! Imagine my surprise after long beating the game and finding everyone useful that Sharla was being shit on and why! Seriously the internet is weird). Will say I loved Torna the Golden Country alot more then XB2 because the combat was less complex and annoying with the Combo spam and everyone having a niche! (Hell I believe that is what inspired them to just have ALL SIX party members be in the battle party for XB3)
Yeah XB3 does have spamable stuff like the Chain Attack and Interlock! But those have limits on them to not make it easy to spam them like Elemental Combos in XB3 (Funny I noticed Future Redeemed seems to be bringing them back in a form! Likely to replace interlinking in that game mode. Hopefully like they did with the balancing of Chain Attack and Interlock! Those get a useful nerf as well that you can't spam them for higher damage! They were more useful for NERFING enemies by blocking their nastier advantages, like blocking Reinforcement spam for example!)
DQ7 felt more boring then DQ6! Too much shit was a DRAG compared to DQ6 (I learned to deal with Random Encounters to the extreme that I'm a master of tolerance LOL) DQ7 also hurt itself with how they take away party members for long periods, how Arcs drag on way longer then they should (taking a shit ton of time before you even GET to Class swiping)
Monark was interesting, but yeah I agree with your assessment. Skill Points should have been separated between characters, not SHARED (Only time that works is when you DON'T have large skill trees like Monark showed! And even then it could be annoying that it's better to keep it separate)
Metal Max Xeno no matter the form didn't feel like a Metal Max game compared to the other games (Worse this one tried to be like Final Fantasy 12/Xenoblade. The original Xeno could do with a few changes, but a complete change didn't change SHIT really! I liked the old ones from the DS/3DS and prior days, (Hell even Metal Saga was good in it's own way) really wish they'd go back to that (wasn't found of a single hub and no towns what so ever they did in Xeno)
SMT5 was a disappointment for me! And frankly adding a "true ending" that makes no sense in hindsight was VERY shortsighted and STUPID! Neutral has always been the "True ending" of a SMT for how fucking hard it is to get on that route. But this was their way of FIXING this issue by NOT making it the "True ending" but instead giving all three routes FAIR TREATMENT (Hell make a TRUE Ending for all three routes) but no, just goes to show Persona 5 focusing may have CRIPPLED Atlus and Megaten in the long run! I ain't hating Persona 5 for being Persona 5, nor blaming it for the decisions made by the suits! But the suits need to know that Persona 5 is a good game, but it's Persona 5. Overexposure is going to cripple Megaten as a whole as it's already OVERSHADOWING Devil Summoner what with Soul Hackers 2 being as it is. And ten bucks Persona 6 is going to be crippled because they focused so heavily on pushing P5, that if P6 tries to venture to new waters, you'll hear "well it's not P5 so it's not great" (Already noticed that with 3Houses and Engage over in Fire Emblem) But frankly as I said, I despise True Endings because they do stuff like this
