Amy's Baking Company, the most INSANE episode of Kitchen Nightmares

- Am I the only one wondering if the whole Amy's Baking Company situation was just some bizarre marketing campaign for Pita Jungle? In this video I delve into the story behind Amy's Baking Company which was by far the most insane restaurant from Kitchen Nightmares, and find out if they stayed open after going on the show. Besides being the most insane episode from the series, it's also the ONLY episode where Gordon gave up and walked away without helping the owners. I found more interesting info about this restaurant than any other that I've done a video about. Let's find out if the restaurant stayed open and what kind of insane things the owners did after going on the show.

Facts about the episode:
-The kitchen was nice because they forced their staff to clean all night with no overtime
-The desserts were bought from somewhere else
-Usually Gordon's crew needs a week before filming the show to get footage about how bad the restaurant is doing. For this one, they got everything they needed in one day
That's a good point, they only filmed for about two days or so and they had enough to make two 40 minute episodes. Imagine how much content they could make if they filmed all week like they normally do. I'm honestly shocked no one offered them a reality show or something. They would make a fortune

I saw a comment under one of these episodes, to the sound of:
If Gordon screams at you, then he wants you to succeed and believes in you, but if he is calm all the time, he has given up on you.
Under that logic, he wanted Joe Nagy (the Owner of Mill Street Bistro, yet another delusional owner), to get more Michelin Stars than himself. Lol.
Funny but not true. If you act like a reasonable person, listen to him, and treat him with respect, he will usually act calm and reasonable himself. These shows are overly dramaticised and heavily edited, they don't portray how Gordon actually acts around people
@@exantiuse497 I agree with your statement. I was actually messing around a little with that comment, but there is no way to prove that, so yes, I was wrong. :)
@@exantiuse497 did you know that Gordon is an executive producer of his own shows? so its not like some "higher up" tells him what to do and how, or how the show is cut, he makes those decisions himself. But yeah I agree too many people watch "reality"-tv and think its depicting reality when in fact it can be scripted and often is, with several takes if someone messes up their scene, and with cuts to make things look the way the showrunners want it.
One of the most mild forms of this kind of fakery is when Gordon, or anyone, is entering some person's home for apparently the first time, yet they already have cameras in their home filming the entering so they know whats happening and whats going to happen.

Amys baking company actually made me think that the show was LESS scripted than i expected. Because those people are 100% real. We know that. So that makes me think that other episodes might be realer than expected.
I think some episodes are more scripted than others, some owners are genuine nuts, some need to play it up a bit for ratings, sometimes the owners are more or less normal. Plus I'm sure the editors edited together people saying things to create conversations that never actually happened.
@@honeybadger6275Yeah but not in this case. Interviews with these owners confirm their insanity for all to see
@@honeybadger6275 Reality shows often stitch together things for more drama -- to make it look like someone is making a bitchy face at another person's statement, for example, when in reality it wasn't at all connected. If there isn't real drama or brattiness they will make an effort to pick someone to be a bad guy and edit around that narrative.

I'm pretty sure taking tips is illegal, even if they get hourly min wage. Because as you said, the customer thinks it's going to the server
It's 100% illegal for the owners to take the tips.
It is highly illegal. Waitresses have to fill out their taxes they have to guesstimate their tips. They put in at least 15 to 20% and pay taxes on something they're not getting.
The only way I can say taking tips is okay if they do a pool thing. Where all tips are pooled together and then divided amongst the entire staff (not owners).
@@kat543 Eh I'm not sure tip pooling is okay really, when I give a server/waitress a tip, I see it as me putting money in their pocket. Then again, I'm from Sweden, and we don't really have much of a tipping culture. idk to me it feels weird.
@alexpalex3453 I think it's so the staff don't feel like they have to compete with each other. They work together so everyone has a good shift but again most places I worked at had a pool system so I'm used to it but I think it's a case by case thing.
the fallout from the episode actually got my entire family hooked on the show. My sister came up to us one day and said "apparently there's this show called kitchen nightmares and a lady called amy is going crazy on facebook". Thanks for the core memory amy!

As a bartender and bar manager for many years, bar flies in bottles is VERY common, especially in summer months. They are attracted to the sugar more than the alcohol. Amy's is so terrible, that we needed an hour long recap of it.
Some things you forgot to mention mermaid grove (also for context here I’m a native of Scottsdale Arizona who moved to Pennsylvania a few years ago but I go back frequently.)
The Wikipedia article about Amy’s baking company is woefully outdated and wrong with regards to the fate of the property and nearby businesses. The property itself was never a martial arts studio after Amy and Samy left.
The place was a burger restaurant for a while. Now it’s currently split between a small Vietnamese restaurant and a children’s art studio. Amy and Samy could’ve had a thriving business. They were right across the street from Scottsdale main movie theater on one of Scottsdale main roads. The restaurants around there get a lot of business.
They ruined what could’ve been a thriving business with their own incompetence and hubris.

1:07:40 “as for you having your patio all to yourself, it is _summertime in Arizona,_ moron!” Lmao that’s pretty funny I gotta give them that one
As an Arizona-resident and restaurant afficionado, I can attest to the fact that most people avoid the outdoors like the plague throughout the summer. The reasons should be obvious, but I'll elaborate: Arizona is overwhelmingly occupied by the Sonoran desert and summer temperatures average around 100° Fahrenheit. Prolonged exposure in this climate leads to inevitable dehydration and eventual heatstroke. Maricopa County, which encompasses the entirety of the Phoenix-metropolitan area, reports between 300 and 700 deaths from excessive heat annually.
...which is precisely why EVERY successful and aspiring restaurant in this area has a covered patio with misters and, often, accompanying fans. Head through major foodie areas and, even during mid-afternoon, you'll see people eating outdoor in the comfort of shade with a light, cool breeze to keep them comfortable... and, trust me, these people are not vagrants or losers. On the contrary: they are usually young couples or working professionals out on the town, paying $5.50 per taco at the Bario Queen or $14 for a Caesar salad at the Hidden House.
If Amy's Baking Company lacked those amenities, it's to their detriment and a further indictment of their lackluster popularity.
nah, i come from a place that is super hot and humid, but folks would still hang out on patios during the evening...could still feel like 90° but if the sun ain't out it's not bad, it's like a whole thing. he said 8pm on a saturday, too, not 2pm, so it would've been a lot cooler, defo patio weather.

Thank you for saying your disclaimer out loud! I barely see ANYONE do that. Sometimes, it doesn't really even come across as taking any real accountability 😅
"I make excellent food" is genuinely just peak trump energy
If they were making 14$ an hour without tips. Then the owners could’ve came at it from a different angle. Like “we here at this restaurant want to do away with tipping culture. By providing you the utmost excellent service and care while enjoying a meal at our establishment.” And I would’ve at least been on their side. But it’s hostile from the word go
So restraunts do that. But they also put up sighns to inform the customers.
The problem isn't with the pay....it's they are being deceptive by taking tips meant for the server. If they were upfront that they do NOT accept tips, then yea...it would be a none issue.
Sammy (Sami?) sometimes feels like a victim, sometimes deels more insane than Amy. It's bewildering.
How do you get banned from TWO entire countries??
107 to go!
So for the tip debate: the FLSA prohibits employers from keeping any portion of employees' tips for any purpose, whether directly or through a tip pool. Meaning what Sammy and Amy were doing was illegal! They're lucky none of their wait staff pressed charges since Sammy admitted to it on TV multiple times.
an hour is insane, and im gonna watch all of it!
props to you, mermaidgrove!
I legit couldn't get through this episode because of how abusive the couple was. This review/overview has finally allowed me to get an in-depth look into this madness without all that screaming!
IT'S FINALLY HERE
Dr. Phil impression is impressive.
Ever considered giving the UK episodes a look?
Was looking at their facebook and seen this gem from Amy: "I AM WONDER WOMAN. I AM A GREAT CHEF, A GREAT WIFE, AND A GREAT MOM TO MY KIDS. AND WE WILL BE PARENTS TO A HUMAN KID, ONE DAY TO. WE WILL SHOW ALL OF YOU."
Fun fact about the Ribbon burger, it in fact was not undercooked like you said, but wildly overcooked. that was at most medium well, a far cry from med rare, like gordon usually orders a good cut of beef.
"I saw some pink, so I assume it was undercooked"
Me: I want to throat punch.
I think the issue with the NDA is that it is enforceable only in the United States, not the place where they are at. Many countries view the USA as too litigious and would not enforce court orders from USA courts in their countries. I also doubt that the courts where they are at would enforce a USA signed NDA and such an NDA might not be legal there. So, from the place where they are at now, they can say anything they want without fear of a lawsuit.
Please do the Down City episode next!
Just 45 minutes of Gordon being yelled at by the owner 😂
I love your Dr. Phil impression! It sounds like his actual voice and it sounds funny, I love that! Keep up the good work and don’t forget to take your time when making them!
I love your videos! Please do Zayna flaming grill episode. I'm friends with one of the girls on the episode and was working next door at the pizza place during filming! :)
You can see it in her eyes, there is something deeply disturbed within her.
