Been doing Keto and IF since 2018. I found that the closer I got to my goal weight, the easier the stalls came. I discovered that breaking my stalls is as easy as taking a day or two and upping my food intake, skipping the fasts and relaxing a bit…every time, when I get back to the IF, my weight loss starts up again. Thanks for all the great information!!

  • @afrohawk
    @afrohawk 2 года назад +50

I've done IF for five years now. 51, M, 6'2" 185, if anyone needs encouragement. IF is life changing. Totally agree about the synergy between fasting and exercise. The body becomes used to the stress of fasting and plateaus. Exercise is necessary to break through that barrier consistently. I also find I get hungrier after working out which is good because daily IF can really draw down your desire for food. I always workout fasted and immediately eat afterwards. I always break my fast with fruit, even on non workout days. Fruit really preps the body for the nourishment coming and provides the sugar spike the brain needs. Great video.

Tom! Awesome to hear! I’m a fairly in shape and fit 43 year old and lost 50 lbs 5 years back and have been on a self imposed keto dogma until this year. I workout and run and did my first half marathon last year, studies herbs and all of this only slowed my rate of BP increase. It wasn’t until I started fasting (per Thomas’ info) and I also started taking NAD boosters after reading Lifespan and BP has been around 110/75 consistently vs 135/95! Glad you were able to fix this issue too and cure the other ailments!

I’m eating more salt than ever so that common doctor lie that salt is causing high BP is utter trash. Seems inflammation causes it all - my doc just shrugs when I mention inflammation like it’s not important and suggests I keep taking his pills. Gotta trust your own body and ignore the doctors on certain things. They are stuck in the 80s and can’t seem to get out due to boomer bureaucracy. Our docs are like government now. Slow and inefficient, doing more harm than good with every action.

Things I wished to know before trying to loose significant weight:
    * being hungry, irritated, distracted, cold, slow, etc. is not necessary or even good for loosing weight and actually signals you are doing something wrong,
    * it is better do to multiple things (cardio exercise, intermittent fasting, keto, calorie restriction, etc.) each in moderation than choose one and overdo it,
    * 20% of effort gives 80% of results. If you've put 20% of effort into fixing 80% of one of your problems, the next best use of your time is to put 20% of effort into fixing 80% of another problem and not to try to put more effort on the same thing. Don't try to become olympic runner, aim to do half an hour of steady jog around your block. Don't try to have perfect diet, aim to get rid of the worst offenders and replace them with healthy options. Don't try to eat once a day for the rest of your life, aim to stick to 4-6 hours a day, try not snacking for most days and if you absolutely have to, make sure you have healthy snacking options available.
    * start slow and give you and your body time to adjust. I started by running. It took couple of months until I was able to run every day and properly recover each day. Then added intermittent fasting. A month later when I got used to IF, I started taking long walks every evening. Month later I started further restricting calories (mostly carbs) and a month later I went on keto. None of this felt too much and yet I found myself loosing 7kgs (15 pounds) a month at some point.
    * you need to make yourself healthy to loose weight rather than try to loose weight to get healthy,
    * to make results stick you need to use your weight loss journey to build new habits that will form/sustain your new lifestyle,
    * it is better to focus on learning new healthy foods that you will like and will displace bad foods from your diet than to kill yourself to give up unhealthy foods that you like and leave a void that will make you permanently unsatisfied,
    * your family will be the biggest enemy or the biggest ally of your efforts, make sure you have a plan to manage your family throughout and after the process,
    * most weight loss advice on the Internet and almost all commercial products targeted at weight loss are either total garbage or useless if you don't know how to use them properly. You want to educate yourself to understand why you got fat, what keeps you fat and how to fix it properly and nobody is on your team.

I guess all bodies are different but your weight loss journey sounds extremely hard. I started with keto no sugar and carbs then went to IF and that was all I needed to loose over 50 pounds. As a semi delivery driver I do manual labor and walking stairs included. That was it I was 245 at 6'1 now I'm 192 and feel great.

    • @leonardmilcin7798
      @leonardmilcin7798 Год назад +6

@@williamgomez5876 I wouldn't say my weight loss was hard. I am otherwise healthy. I work remotely and I can easily find time to do a morning run, an evening walk and make whatever meals I want and eat them whenever I want.
There is lots of people who have other health issues or demands on their time or finances that make it an uphill battle for them.
The only reason I made it hard for myself is because I am stubborn and impatient and when I set myself on a goal I will want to get there as fast as I can by any means possible.
As to your journey, I am happy for you. I can see the challenges on getting healthy keto while working delivery unless you are somehow able to cram all your calories very early in the morning which I would probably not be able to do.

I used to have a job where I was lifting between 90-130 lbs on a regular basis doing a lot of physical work. Back then I could always eat whatever I wanted and drink as much as I wanted and never gained a pound. Now my job is sedentary and I gain weight easily. The only way I am able to maintain my weight now is through intermittent fasting (I skip breakfast and lunch) because I get no exercise during the day. I was able to lose 30 lbs this way (the amount of weight I gained when I lost my job and we were all in lockdown for 2 years straight).
All I’ll say is this. If you can get exercise during the day that’s great. It’ll help you live longer, but in the end you should do whatever you need to do to lose weight if it’s negatively affecting your life.

Even though today am fasting 48 hours cuz I was off fasting a while, I realized eating breakfast is a good for the rest of the day. So, now what I have to do is to circle my food. Sometimes I will start in the morning and sometimes later of the day. Confusing the body is the key I realized now.

Excellent suggestions. I had already started this approach on my own along with advice from other sources. Sometimes omad once or twice a week or even four days in a row. . Most times two meals a day and the occasional cheat. Mix up eating times and fasting windows. From time to time a longer fast . Most times only eat when I feel hungry as the liver has burnt through glcyogen. Important to track your sleep and stress levels and know where you are. Never did keto down from 125kg to 81 kg, no more diabetes and high blood pressure. Walk regularly acupuncture and massage. Cut down on sugar, fix your stress response and quieten your mind. Bottom line , each person is different learn what works for you.

I absolutely hate fasting, can not stand to do it but I love doing caloric restriction.
My favourite method is letting myself get a little hungry and then going on a nice 2-3 hour mountain hike while hungry. The activity and water drinking subdues the hunger so it's mild but motivating and then when you finally get home to eat, food tastes soooooo good.

What a great video, it mimics what I went through when I lost 90lbs after a lifetime of not being able to lose anything. For me I used to eat at night and starve all day. When I switched to a big breakfast of eggs with cheese, bacon and sausage and then had my other meal around 3pm I started losing while seemingly eating double the calories. I also had issues with fasting and my metabolic rate. I kept repeating the same pattern and ended up starving myself on 800 calories a day. It was killing me until one day I thought I am going to eat more, add cardio and see what happens. The cardio which I previously never did burned some of the calories off and the extra food convinced my body it wasn't starving and released the last of the body fat. I have helped some people who were starving themselves and when they added food and a little cardio the body started losing fat again.. To me it was almost like tricking the body into thinking it wasn't in a famine and once I figured that out I was able to manage plateaus pretty easily... Its weird, sort of like a game and wasn't linear. Now its a lot easier...

Thank you for your posting. I’m stuck. I need to lose 45-55 and I’m just not losing anything. In part because of my lack of effort. I eat at night. Every single day. Years ago I forced my self to not eat at night. I lost a ton of weight just from doing that. It turned into an all day thing. Until at one point the thought of eating made me nauseous. The day I knew I was mentally in trouble was when the thought of even drinking water made me nauseous. I ended up sick and I’m the hospital with pneumonia. I was there for several weeks. I lost even more weight. I fought to come home. When I finally did I decided to take bath. They wouldn’t let me at the hospital. When I looked at my legs in the bathtub they looked like there photos of men from the Holocaust. It scared me. So I ate and did my best to walk. I gained strength and weight over time. Today I’m 57 pounds heavier than the day I took that bath. I only go to the gym once a week. I do walk everyday. But the eating is still not figured out. I’m going to try what you do. Eat breakfast and then again in the late afternoon. Then I’ll try to fast through the evening. I’ve got to find something that will work for me. My goal is a healthy 185-190. Today I weighed in at 232. ☹️

150% RIGHT! Like said before; Fasting is a tool. You have to change it up! I lost 100lbs from 350LBS to 250LBS. As soon as I hit 250LBS I hit a HUGEEE wall that I couldn't penetrate! I could NOT break 250LBS, and I was doing cardio 7 days a week, 1 hour a day and lifting weight every other day! It was super frustrating. I had to get off the fasting for awhile then go back to IF for it to work again. The body is an incredible machine that adapts to ANY situation! Just today I broke the 250s for the 1st time and I'm in the 240s, but I see there's diminishing returns. It's harder to lose weight as you go down. It was easier to lose 100lbs at the beginning than 10LBS later on. Just like weight lifting, you're looking to "shock" the body. That "shock" is what stimulates change. If you keep doing the same thing, your body will adapt to it and change no more.

Congrats on losing 100lbs, that’s incredible and great work! Personally I started into fasting only a few weeks ago. It’s all a bit new to me so I don’t have or follow so many rules. For ex I’m not really strict on carbs, I don’t do IF every day. I’m not bothered on what I eat. However I do prefer to stop eating around 2pm or 3pm on my fasting days. Actually I don’t do 16:8 or omad exclusively. In the past 4 weeks I’ve done a bunch of 18 hour fasts, some 24 hour fasts, a 36 hour fast, and two 48 hour fasts. This has been only in the past 3 weeks or so. I also exercise during my fasts, even on my 48 hour fasts. I’m not too sure about weight lifting during my extended fasts but I do cardio no problem.

Probably the best succinct point-by-point fasting video I've seen on this channel EVER 👍👍... Also learned much of these things testing on my own body over the past year and a half or so-the first two points in the past few months, after fasting for years
Haven't lost so much weight SO FAS as I did like 6 months ago when I STOPPED FASTING COMPLETELY for a couple months, AND decided to eat like a "normal person" at the same time. Dropped 20 pounds in two months eating regular foods, and even a little 'junky' stuffs. I figured my metabolism may have gotten stuck too low, which is why I did it. BOY WAS I RIGHT! Didn't even want to lose weight like that. Now I feel too slim 😣
Now I've gone from doing a 20/4-ish 6 days a week to a roughly 16-17/8-7 five days a week.... And I'm actually EATING WAY MORE NOW than I have in many years just to keep weight on!
At 47, between some keto variations to keto-carnivorish over a couple years and fasting for over 5 years, I've reset my metabolism to like it was between my late-teens to early 20's! 😲

This is an excellent, common sense video that really does echo my own multi year fasting journey. I have stopped obsessing over autophagy, pulse and take breaks from IF, similarly pulse in longer monthly fasts, and always do intense exercise during the longer fasts too. Also the tip on prioritising high quality protein is especially important, and not eating too little daily such that you slow your metabolic rate. Great advice Thomas, hopefully it will give newer keto/fasters some more balance and perspective.
My top rule with any fast, be it an IF daily or longer monthly is simply to STOP if I’m struggling and genuinely hungry that day.

Great video & content Thomas, I value you so much as a resource. I’m 50, post menopausal & have multiple chronic illnesses. I work out 6 days a week & most people are shocked to find out how old I am. I work out harder & am in better shape than people 10-15 years younger than me. I was diagnosed w/ mold illness last January which caused complete hormonal dysfunction. I was in adrenal burnout, severely hypothyroid, bottom basement DHEA & testosterone. And had been through unexplained early menopause. I started out doing Dr. Kellyann’s cleanse & reset, then her bone broth diet, then evolved into ketocycling. I do a couple of mos on couple off, depending on what events I have going on in my life that I can use for motivation. I just did my 1st 2 day fast ( it was actually 57 1/2 hrs). When I’m doing Keto, I fast 2 days a week. I used to do a 22-24 hr fast w/a protein shake after 7pm & an occasional 36 hr fast. After watching 1 of your videos that mentioned the benefits of longer fasts for women my age, I decided to extend 1 fast a wk to a 36 hr fast. Then thought maybe it would be easier to combine my fasting days & get it over with. It definitely wasn’t easier & I don’t enjoy fasting but I have a low motility & gut issues so fasting definitely helps me process anything that would normally make me feel sluggish & weighed down. I’m going to take your recommendation & do one 2 day fast a mo. While on keto. I also enjoyed how lean I felt afterwards. It felt like a whole other level than the 36 hr just by combining my days. I had more energy when I woke up on day 3. On fasting days, Im usually riding the “struggle bus”. I use a breathalyzer for ketones & during the week, my ketones dwindle until I fast again on Monday. I never experience tons of energy on keto, but it does give me the best results by far physically. I just look so much better on keto & feel like I’m being so much healthier. I also have a genetic neurological disorder called dystonia which I have to work my exercise routines around. But I know the benefits of keto neurologically. Thanks in advance!
    Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

Exercise during fasted stage is very important and that can stimulate autophagy faster.
I started fasting only a year ago but exercise and practice sport since very young age and that helps me to live strong and healthy.

I learned a thing or two over the past year. Started intermittend fasting (didn't eat in the morning, and still don't most of the times), started doing Keto which was pretty hard at the beginning. I learned which fats help me get through the day. Same with protein. Eggs for example didn't help me at all without exercise -> If I ate 3-5 eggs and didn't move afterwards hunger didn't come down at all. I also learned that I can overeat pretty easily and that that can keep me hungry even after eating a bunch.
The most curious thing though, after more than 7 months of IF and Keto, I learned that I lose more body fat and gain more muscle when I eat some sugary stuff at the evening. I don't understand it but I could imagine that my very demanding side job (delivering drinks to whatever floor) just expect my body to have more energy which I can't all get from protein and fat entirely. I try to avoid products out of flour because I'm getting bloated after eating those but I feel perfectly fine after eating most sweats, potatoes, beans and stuff. And if my colon starts complaining I eat a batch of Sauerkraut and the day after I'm as good as new^^
Now... I never was too heavy or anything the llike. I did IF/Keto only for health benefits. I'm not afraid to take breaks from Keto anymore though. And IF only works for me when I don't feel hungry/exhausted anyways.

I stopped eating for 21 days. I lost 31 pounds, 20 pounds of fat, 2 pounds of muscle, and 9 pounds of water. Over 6 months I gained the water back, gained 6 pounds of muscle (via weight training) and 1 pound of fat. Semi KETO/Semi Carnivore. NO PURPOSEFUL CARBS. All blood work is 100% on point. BP hoovers around 115/70ish

I gained alot of weight after my dad died and i was a very active proffesional martial artist. 172cm in hight and 101.7kg was the worst when i started to recover. Fasting with breaks helped me alot, eat what you desire, but dont overdoo it. Also take breaks when you achieve certain goals for a week or two to recover your metabolism. Now iam again at my best and feel great. I hope everyone achieves their goal one day. Willpower wins and for me it was Jesus who gave me the strength. Edit: I eat at 1pm when fasting.

The ability to revise beliefs and opinions with new evidence is key. Great video! Realizing there's not a clear physiological fasted/fed states, except in extreme circumstances, is very important. Autophagy is always going on and a morning protein shake is not going to ruin fat loss

Also- I build all my meals around ANIMAL PROTEIN now. Feeling much healthier!

  • @BigNoseDog

3:47 “It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective, when we’re not eating, we should be moving.”
I disagree. Humans probably only moved when it was necessary. To hunt for food, to avoid predators, etc. But the rest of the time, they probably sat around conserving energy. That’s not to say you should sit at a desk all day just because you’re fasting. You should get up and move around simply because sitting in a chair for prolonged periods is bad for you.
There’s no question a lot of people have a bad relationship with fasting. I used to eat junk food and rationalize by saying I could just fast the next day, much like how some people eat poorly and then burn it off at the gym afterwards. But for most of us, fasting just makes life simpler. You don’t have to spend time and energy cooking or planning your day around an eating schedule. For me personally, it’s changed my relationship with food. Until I started fasting, I had no idea how much of my eating was driven by stress, social cues, habit, or boredom. Bottom line: If fasting is getting you the results you want and isn’t making you worse off, then there’s no reason to change.

I have been challenged with binge eating too.
I am more in control now a days and have learned a lot to help me be mindful resulting in a better relationship all together with foods.
But dang I still binge on an occasion. It’s not daily but can come in spurts for 1-3 days then I seemingly have management with it all for a 2-3 month season then wham 🤷🏼‍♀️

I heard a saying once. It went something like this, where you may be highly disciplined in some arenas you will slip in other arenas. It's hard for humans to be disciplined in all things. You know yourself best but to me 2 to 3 days after months of being disciplined seems okay. But I think it's more about that underlying guilt about the slip up (at least for me) that can eat away at a person. I think the question to ask ourselves what is healthy and what would be acceptable that feels good to you that won't make you fill like your backsliding. Right now for me since when last posted I'm putting cacao in my shakes. Sometimes honey in my coffee. It's been helpful to stave off my sugar binge eating such as packaged items like cookies. So far it's been working for me to keep my mind and body from craving those damn cookies lol.

@@lillyCfields I couldn’t love this more from you Lilly 💗.
I so appreciate your time to share a very good and wise truth !
My 3 days of binging turned to 4 weeks of 3 days binging each week. I’m speaking serious binging for me.(17-25 cookies in one setting etc..)
The love I have for myself and my body didn’t bring harsh judgement or criticism but more a real genuine curiosity as to why ,Debbie? As the weeks went on , I learned I was having some serious emotional flash backs which lead to self compassion with the mindset of openness to allow my emotions with an opportunity to parent or love myself the way I choose ; with validation, love and acceptance. Low and Behold , I’m back in alignment with what’s best and healthier for me as that is mindful eating no matter what I choose to eat.
So much appreciation for you Lilly.
