Ronda pushed the cov jab and it really felt like she was doing it because she was told in the video it didn't seem authentic so I find it hard to trust anything else she says until she comes out and goes over all the bad stuff that has come of it like she did claiming the stuff she thought was good (unless she has and I missed it in which case I take this back) I'm not pro or anti fasting so no conclusion meant with this comment with the topic of this video
That’s exactly why I’m very skeptical about these studies that are coming out. You can sway any study to get a result that you want. As soon as I heard all the stuff about heart attacks when doing 16:8 I immediately thought…..ok who has to gain from that? The entire diet industry that’s who. That’s a multi billion a year business. The thing about fasting is…..there’s no health bar to sell for that. There’s no equipment to sell for that. There’s a few books but that’s about it. It’s to easy. You’re not eating🤷♂️ I’d love to know what the mechanism could possibly be that causes cardiac problems by missing a few meal. I call BS.
Yep. These people are pushing extreme eating programs. The South Beach Diet, The Zone Diet, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Protein Power, Fasting, High Carb, Low Carb, you can lose fat and weight on all of these diets because the main culprit isn't so much what you're eating, it's how many calories you consume that causes weight loss or weight gain.
Meat was good. Meat is bad. Eggs were good. Eggs are bad. Fasting good. Fasting bad. I've been doing all three since I saw a video you did on fasting years ago. I'm the healthiest I've ever been. Went from 230 to 200. Remember, there's no money for big pharma when people are healthy.
the whole point of this long video is just to monitor muscle mass loss due to decreased protein intake as a result of eating only in a limited time duration. keep up resistance training, keep taking adequate protein and all essentials &antioxidants and maximize authopagy potential of the body, such a fundemantal evolutionary defense mechanism alone by itself can take care of so many issues fundamentaly wrong at cellular and even at dna level inside the body. you're good to go. untill "engineered" telomerase repair and elongation is achieved customized fasting regimes for individuals alongside proper macros and autophagy targeted physical training (this is another science) is the golden recipe. no other trash talk now in 2024 can prove otherwise. these are hard limits, hard boundaries well established after massively experimented fads purposefully marketed by the industries for profit maximization and creating consumer dependence on the status quo for the last 60 years starting with the invention of "american breakfast" in 50s&60s. we all know from 80's industrial campaigns against butter/meat/organ meat etc. only to starve whole populations with hydrogenated palm oils, carb&fruit juice loaded diets only to increase obesity to a level never seen in human history before!
@ApolloSuns It started me on the road to better habits. No more drinking. No more processed foods. No added sugars. No coffee past noon. 16-8 during the week and Sat-Sun I live a little
Everything in moderation, including fasting. And for women especially, it's not wise to intermittent fast longer than 16/8. One longer fast per year (3-4 days) is sufficient. Also: too much protein is hard on kidneys.
None of these experts referred to any medical studies for their recommendations. I’m accustomed to Dr Ken Berry’s and Dr Jason Fung’s always referring to studies to support ideas. I’m still wrestling with residual insulin resistance from decades of carb addiction. I’ll keep intermittent fasting.
@@HelenDagr8yeah don't listen to the so called experts. You know what is best for your own body. The experts get things wrong all the time and change advice every 5 minutes. We all end up confused in the end ❤❤❤
It is worthy. I am 73 years old and living proof of it. I have been fasting for the past 20 years without any negative side effects. I fast 16 hours on and 8 hours off. On Saturday and Sunday up to 20 hours. I do not take any medications of any kind, not even Tylenol. The last time I had a cold was in 2002. I exercise daily from 0500 to 0600 hrs, do not feel fatigue, tired; rather, full of energy ready to tackle the day by standing up to 8 hours dispensing medications to people my age and much younger. I practice good eating habits and take my supplements. There you have it. Not bad for an old fart
Ok I agree it works for you and is good for you, but one hour of exercise a day is not a lot even at your age, if you increase your training load you will need more protein, what you are doing now is putting your body to close to atrophy.
Thats like: coffee is good for you, coffee is bad for you... I just continue doing my 18/6 intermittent fasting because I lost 30 lbs and I feel great.
One thing i came to understand from following these health advices over years is that there is no such thing as healthy or unhealthy in itself. Coffee contains many antioxodant that neutralizes free radicals. The average american's diet is lacking antioxidant. Thus the average american benefit from coffee. If you are really healthy you might have already enough antioxidant due to other sources so coffee cannot aid that process anymore. Same here with fasting, muscle loss depends highly on your muscle and fat percentage. So the takeaway for me is that we have to take account the whole circumstances of the individual, no substance in itself can be deemed good/healthy without the context
Very true. Finishing a 3 day right now. It has been my go to for a decade. Sometimes I go up to 7 days, sometimes 5, but always try to atleast complete 3 days. I do IF daily for an 18:6 fast to eating windows. I'm finding that I need more protein than i generally eat though so I will address that next.
Fasting has changed my life. Lost 36lbs but more importantly regained my health and don’t look half dead anymore. I fast 36hours every week by skipping Mondays, 3 day fast 4 times a year. It’s so simple.
Once a year I do a 7-14 day fast. It’s life changing. People complaining about muscle loss have never done this. The weeks after a fast, I feel stronger, more mentally sharp, etc.
I agree with you 100% I made the same decision and I feel great doing this. Working out on empty stomach was the only thing that helped me see my abs again. Nothing else was working
Nothing wrong with that if you go soon after waking up and just not hungry, but also no benefit to doing that. Personally I'm always strong mid day/evening after ive had good amount of food in me vs early morning fasted work out.
I agree. In the morning I run without eating anything and then I go to work part time and eat at 1:45 pm when I get home and I feel great! When I eat before work I always feel heavier and not as good
I'm 60 years old, and people say that I look 47, I have been doing 16 hours fasting for 30 years, I eat chicken with lots of vegetables and some fruits and nuts and i cook with extra virgin olive oil, I feel great, never had any health problems and I will never stop fasting.
Currently on a carnivore journey and I am definitely getting enough protein. Feel better than ever, I usually fast 16-20hrs a day and have 2 meals a day.
Fasting was the most mind-blowing "discovery" I made for myself (I put that in quotes because obviously I followed others like Dr. Fung talking about it). It was like discovering how I had lived in my own "Matrix", got to see it from the outside for the first time, and now I live outside of some unknown prison I had lived in for 40 years (the belief that I HAD to eat). Fasting changed my life utterly, both as intermittent and as the prolonged version. It's one of the most powerful tools available to us, along with what we chose to eat, how much of it, the exercise we chose, and the mental stress we place upon ourselves. Play with all the variables, discover what works for you (and it's fluid - what works today may not work in 10 years as you age and can't do some exercises, for example).
I have always been fasting at least 16 hours a day. But in the past year, I have really been following Dr. Mindy and increasing the longer fast. Doing one 24-36 hr fast once per week followed by daily intermittent fasting. I have GAINED FAT, Gained cellulite, lost energy and it seems like my metabolism is stuck. Like now, I’m afraid to eat because even when I do eat healthy… And I incorporate, walnuts, nut butter, avocados that fat goes right to my thighs now. And now that I don’t have the energy to run like I used to before I cannot burn that fat off. I feel less energized and motivated after longer fasts and definitely don’t have the stamina, strength energy or endurance to do the workouts I used to that left me feeling way more lean, energized and healthier than fasting has gotten me. I need to get back to doing maybe 16 hours of daily fasting but increasing my workouts several days a week. Because walking and doing longer fasting just doesn’t do it for me. It’s like I have no muscle tone, no strength and actually more cellulite than I ever had before. 🏃♀

These people did not get ill and then experience healing themselves through fasting. I did. And it appears there are volumes more studies supporting fasting than the recent one or two no peer reviewed studies that suddenly don't support it.

@@HH-gv8mx I'm so sorry you are experiencing so much! I can't speak to your results because I don't know your medical situation or food intake! But I know for me, after 30 years vegetarian and juice fast cleanses, I hit menapause and slow metabolism. I follow Dr. Mindy, too. For over 5 years, and Dr. Boz. I had a cancer scare, pre diabetic numbers/ insulin resistance, and some related health concerns including 30 extra pounds of weight! 72 hour fasting on keto diet (whole , unprocessed foods, no seed oils, organic, HIGH FAT 80% of my diet is fat very low carbs) brought my AIC from 5.7 to 4.8 and my cholesteral ratios, HOMO IR to perfect. I reversed all insulin resistance. Cancer healed. I evicted over 30 pounds. I keep it off with IF. But low fat , high carb made me unhealthy. I believe that it's important to eat properly along with the fasting, and to understand the body chemisty as this goes on. I'm going to be 58 years old in June and I feel and look healthier than ever in my life. I get compliments on my skin and hair all the time. There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientifically supported studies on the benefits of fasting, and metabolic switching is important. If you don't follow true ketosis then it's simply "yo yo dieting" and can mess up the metabolism rather than correct it. A continuous glucose monitor CGM is a great tool I paid for it out of pocket for three months, just to see how my body reacted to certain foods. My insluin is down to 6 from over 20! I believe in the power of fasting , correctly, and low carb high fat.
How long did it take you to recover from your illness once you had started fasting regularly? I'm in the same boat, chronically ill, recently started fasting to try to recover from it. It's especially hard because I'm underweight and have mobility challenges that worsen when I'm not fueling myself. But my view is that I need to plow through the difficulty of fasting to regenerate my white blood cells so I can fight my chronic infections. Also the autophagy clearing up junk congestion and dysfunctional cells and organelles. My hope is that after each fast I become a bit stronger and eventually reach a tipping point where my system can resolve the overwhelming stressors it's under currently.
Full fasting is positively impactful while intermittent fasting is done to keep the pounds off. I recently fasted for 9 days, with dry fasting firstb6 days, and water fasting the next 3 days and I can feel the huge difference than when I only do intermittent fasting. Real full fasting works
There should be a delineation between fasting for someone in already perfect health with lots of muscle (like these “experts”) and fasting for someone that’s overweight with insulin resistance. Nothing lowers blood insulin levels like fasting.
Similarly, current exercises need to be taken into account. When I trained for a half marathon I could tell my body didn't want to fast. I am now recovering from a knee injury and my energy expenditure is low and my body once again enjoys fasting.
Any of these "experts" been overweight for almost 5 decades? None of this constant guessing & disagreement is helpful. I've had enough, other things to listen to!
All of these people are fairly lean to begin with and they train hard compared to most. I think you should talk with Jason Fung. His clinic uses fasting for insulin resistant metabolically challenged overweight people. Fasting works best for them to improve their quality of life in every way.
So basically anything “experts” tell you, don’t take too seriously because it will all be proven to be the opposite years down the road… as long as they get the views and clicks on their videos is the plan.
The thing about fasting is that no one makes money from it. We always think about the food and snack corporations, but nearly all these "experts" have sponsors, or a product with their name and face on it that would break a fast if it's regularly consumed. Fasting doesn't grease anyone's palms.
I fast. I rarely eat before 1pm. I maintain a healthy weight, I feel good and I am not hungry. Sometimes I don’t eat until dinner, depending on my activity level or energy level.
Breakfast by 7am is very important... last and final meal 6.30 or 7.30pm..You will feel much better.. As you age..missing breakfast will cause problems..missing lunch is recommended unless you are involved in heavy work under the sun..or eat some light snacks if u need to , drink water, and take a nap ..
I'm the same. I don't eat until 2 pm or later, and it's easy for me. I know that eating earlier in the day and stopping by late afternoon is supposed to be better for you, but my mind and body can't do that. I'd be cheating all the time in the evening. I didn't start fasting for any reason as I didn't have health or weight issues (haven't had a cold since 1986 and it lasted 1 day, nor have I had the flu my entire adult life - or flu shot), but figured it would keep me healthy as I am getting older.
I intermittently fast 6 days a week for 18-22 hrs, weight training and cardio fasted also 6 days a week. My weight consistently is around 240lbs, muscular and lean. I do not track macros, simply focus on protein intake and moderate carbohydrate consumption. I’m so tired of the experts stating you lose muscle, catabolic state kills performance. I have more energy, strength has improved and my natural testosterone levels remain high. I feel and look amazing, better than I did in my 20’s….I’m 44 this year.
I am almost 72, insulin resistant, down about 90 lbs doing KETO but still need to drop a few more. I need more muscle mass....was never an athlete. Sticking with two meals a day until I have a normal A1C, etc. I eat breakfast and have a second meal early afternoon....about 2:00. In the gym 3 days a week with resistance training. Will start daily brisk 2 mile walks when weather gets better. Your posts seem to be addressed primarily to people whose profile I don't fit.
Thomas, you are mixing up what they are saying. Dr. Attia's stopping 3 and 7 day fasts is completely different from Dr. Patrick's skipping a meal. They are not talking about the same thing and you try to make it seem that they are talking about the same thing just because they use the term "fast". I stopped 3 day fasts because they affect my workouts, but I still do OMAD and have not noticed a detrimental effect from eating only once a day.
I am not so sure that they are warning against fasting. What I am seeing here are suggestions to be more mindful about protein when considering or engaging in fasting. For instance, suggesting being cautious about skipping breakfast is not suggesting against fasting, it may simply mean having your feasting period earlier. Eg. I used to have breakfast around midday and my last meal around 7 or 8 in the evening. I now have breakfast around 7 or 8 am and my last meal around 5pm. Then I saw the suggestion that prolonged fasting need not be frequent. I don't see warnings against fasting generally
I fast since 2020 my food bills plummeted. Blood work best it’s ever been . Have a relationship with a beautiful woman 20 years my junior . Happy life 🎉
I did IF and went from diabetic to an a1c of 4.8. I backed off a little bit on IF (down to 4 days/wk) and gained 25 lbs and inflammation increased. I'm going back. I would assume these people aren't prone to metabolic issues.
I feel something they may also have in common is a relatively intense/religious workout schedule - you could probably call these people athletes. There's lots of benefits common to fasting and exercise, but that doesn't mean more of both is better in combo. Constant heavy workouts probably do pair better with "feasting" mode. If you're already working out so much that you couldn't gain fat if you tried, maybe you're already on the edge. Like, I am noticing the contrast with the perspective of other big fasting proponents who advise to keep exercise low/light during long fasts so as not to confound the muscle preserving processes - which seems synergistic with the natural rhythms. Maybe those guys have just been on the money all along, and if you're a gym junkie with a high exercise load who would never dream of skipping a leg day, this is just the expected result of "I'll just add fasting to what I'm doing". Sometimes these "biohackers" have a tendency towards extremes that override instincts, you know? If I did what some of them do, my body would fall in a heap - or at least it would have at the beginning of my healing journey. I wouldn't care to try their way now. I don't know. I'm no expert myself. But I do know fasting works well for me for keeping my health in check with a lifestyle that my body can sustain. I feel like I'm working with its natural rhythms and it isn't going to revolt on me. Let them experiment with maintaining heavy training AND fasting AND adding 2g/kg of protein and crunch their spreadsheets to see the results. My body and I will keep on doing what works well for us.

@@HH-gv8mx. Are you going through menopause by chance? I was a runner and saw some of the same undesirable changes in my body. Balancing hormones helps.
I've been fasting every day for more than 3 years. Recently, I started exercising and gaining muscle! I'm going to do this for the rest of my life no matter what!
Anything, taken to the extreme, can be deleterious. If you consume too much water you can induce hyponatremia, which can be fatal. Should we, therefore, consider drinking water as dangerous? Absolutely not. Similarly, fasting can have benefits, but it must be done in such a way as to not induce significant muscle atrophy it can be problematic.
Yeah, Attia abandoning fasting when he was doing crazy 7-day water fasts regularly, is advice for himself, not the average faster who's doing 18h to 48h. The average person is 28% body fat percentage now (this is just below the obesity threshold); fasting is crucial for average Joe. The advice should be: fast for up to 48h, and get the eggs, bacon, butter, ground beef and electrolytes down you.
This is a psychological trick that GREATLY rises fears of body builders but what about the fact that overly huge muscles aren’t healthy for joints in the first place? Maybe less muscles via fasting is healthy for joints
If the concern with IM is deficient protein intake, doesn’t the issue presented on recent videos that the discovery of the body’s ability to utilize protein over a longer period than previously assumed offer a “best of both worlds” position? If consuming high amounts of protein regardless of the duration of the feeding window still offers the benefits of protein consumption, why not continue IM while reaching protein intake goals during whatever one’s feeding window is?
Fasting is a spiritual discipline that is taught in the Bible. Jesus expected His followers to fast, and He said that God rewards fasting. Fasting, according to the Bible, means to voluntarily reduce or eliminate your intake of food for a specific time and purpose.
Exactly. Fasting is meant to be a spiritual practice... not daily for nutrition purposes... 😂 nowhere in the Bible do people fast everyday. It's meant to be short term.
Amen! I usually fast for 16 hours daily, and did my first 72-hour fast at the end of Lent. At first I was worried I would lose muscle, but I started resistance training before around the same time that I started IF, and so far fasting has not resulted in muscle loss. I fast for both physical and spiritual health 💪🙏

I like that she said 'skipping meals' what does thst mean, who decides thefe should be 3 meals and day and if you do less your skipping a meal or adding of you do more.
I just don't think we are designed to eat all day. The only animals that do this are herbivores. We do need plenty of protein for sure but do we need to be eating it all day long?
@159awi Your 'point' is moot. In fact, not a relevant point at all. Failure to Fast does not equate to 'eating all day'. AND... is not at all the suggestion being made here😊
@@barbarafairbanks4578 granted, 'all day' is hyperbole. But these guys seem to have a fear of catabolism. But that is a perfectly normal state. Required, in fact. It's not that they're saying it's bad, they're cautious because IF can lead you to eat less protein than necessary (probably because of the myth about how human body can absorb only 30gr of protein per meal, which was already debunked a few videos ago)

But trying to sell those who believe we are being bamboozled, based on their (conspiracy theory) idea that the fasting cash cow has run out of milk🙄 - therefore, no more profit from fasting advice - and that's why experts are changing their minds. Nevermind ANY logic on how they made a profit on advising fasting in the 1st place 😂 (makes no sense)
Skipping a meal is just that. Going on a fast should not be stressful, if it does make you stress, dont do it. Experts are always changing their minds. Its getting ridiculous. Skip the sugar, eat when you are truly hungry and enjoy your life.
I also think it's ok to be hungry, we don't need to give into that urge immediately. Sometimes just drinking a glass of water will overcome hunger pangs.
I think they need to define/clarify their use of the term fasting. 1. Are they referring to intermittent fasting? (Eating only within a specific time window each day?) 2. Are they referring to OMAD (one meal a day?) 3. Are they referring to 24 or more hours without food? Etc.
Not everyone who says something you don't like is a grifter. New research data is constantly being released and these guys consume that data and respond to it. That is what science is supposed to do, evolve. That said, I have no plans of changing my 18/6 IF routine because I don't do prolonged fasting anyway, which is primarily what they are concerned about. In any case, it's a bit lazy to always assume that everyone is lying to you. My suggestion is to review the latest research and see for yourself whether or not there is any validity to what they are saying.
All I know is this: Due to 18-hour fasts on a daily basis, I was able to lose over 30 pounds in a 4 month period. In addition to the weight loss, certain biomarkers improved significantly (i.e. cholesterol, blood sugar/insulin resistance, blood pressure). Not to mention better energy levels and mental clarity. So, considering all of the benefits mentioned above, I will continue with my daily fasting protocol. Naysayers or individuals that no longer fast will not deter me from continuing such a practice. 👉💯🧘♂️🙏☯️

@@azzgunther Yes, I agree. An, imo, those here who are reporting weightloss with Fasting may have missed the point of this video.... IMO the point of this video was to make viewers aware that Fasting can have drawbacks - especially when it comes to the realization that a loss of muscle mass will generally accompany fatloss. I DO think Thomas chose the wrong (unfortunate) title AND subtitle for this video. When we get past the negative (possibly clickbait) title- and watch the video, we see that no 'expert' is generally against fasting - but, instead, are stating that fasting d/n work for them - and further that they wanted to convey some of the misnomers about - and drawbacks of - Fasting. This, imo, clearly came across in those video- but again, an unfortunate and misleading title was assigned To this video!
I think it would also be important in a video like this to address people who may be fasting due to certain medical conditions. All of the people in this video were fasting to optimize health.
Excellent Post Thomas. I’ve listen to all those people, but don’t have enough time in the day to be up on all of their personal research. I luv the way you utilized all of them into one well done analysis..
The video featuring Thomas DeLauer discussing expert opinions on fasting, including those of Dr. Peter Attia, Dr. Rhonda Patrick, and Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, offers several key takeaways on the reconsideration of fasting practices: 1. **Shift in Expert Opinion:** Many health and fitness experts who once advocated for fasting have revised their views based on emerging evidence and personal observations related to muscle mass preservation and overall health impacts. 2. **Concern Over Muscle Mass:** A significant concern among these experts is the potential for muscle loss during fasting, especially with prolonged periods without food. Maintaining muscle mass is emphasized as crucial for health and longevity. 3. **The Importance of Protein:** The discussions underline the critical role of protein in preventing muscle breakdown. Adequate protein intake is essential, particularly after periods of fasting, to support muscle protein synthesis. 4. **Revised Fasting Practices:** While fasting can have benefits, these experts suggest modifications to fasting routines to mitigate negative effects, such as focusing on sufficient protein consumption and timing workouts to preserve muscle. 5. **Protein Intake Recommendations:** For those engaging in fasting, a higher protein intake than previously thought necessary is recommended-ranging from 1.6 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight-to support muscle maintenance or growth. 6. **Exercise and Fasting Compatibility:** Resistance training is highlighted as beneficial during fasting periods to help counteract muscle loss. Proper nutrition, particularly adequate protein and calorie intake around exercise, is crucial. 7. **Balanced Approach to Fasting:** The experts advocate for a balanced approach that incorporates fasting into a lifestyle that also prioritizes muscle preservation through diet and exercise, rather than fasting in isolation. 8. **Fasting is Not One-size-fits-all:** The evolving perspectives of these health experts reflect a more nuanced understanding of fasting, recognizing it can be part of a healthy lifestyle if properly managed, especially in terms of nutrition and physical activity.
How many times do you think "experts" can tell us to do the exact opposite of what they espoused previously, before we come to the understanding that we're being manipulated? I'll tell you in my case, that moment is now. Thanks for the memories Thomas. I wish I could say it's been fun.
I've been doing a 16/8 fasting protocol for years. I am 67 and feel like 45. I consume organic foods, wild blueberries, apples, greens, onions, organ meats, regenerative pasture raised eggs, Bison, Elk and other healthy proteins. I switched from doing intense fasted workouts (due to excess cortisol levels) to fed weight training, and have actually increased my strength. It amazes me how little these "experts" know about nutrition. They claim this, then they claim that. This, that, this, that. Like Paul Saladino, he changes his mind every 3 years.
Dr. Lyon saved my life with her protein suggestions. I was going through perimenopause and one of the best remedies to relieve symptoms was significantly increasing my protein. I will add that you, Thomas, sold me on iF and that relieved Perimenopausal symptoms, too.

Thomas did such a great job representing everyone he interviewed. Thats a lot of trust from all the other experts interviewed. Thanks for the daily motivation!
@7:00 Rhonda made the claim we don't store amino acids. That's wrong because 70% of the amino acids we use come from recycling, so our whole body is in fact a protein store and is our main source of protein largely before the food we eat. Moreover when we eat a lot of proteins in a meal our digestion slows down so that amino acids get more slowly into the blood where they can still be present long after the meal. I don't really buy this story we would necessarily be in an extreme catabolic state and break down our muscle as soon as we skip breakfast. Honestly if we eat 100g of protein at lunch and 100g at dinner I can't believe we could lose a significant amount of muscle mass before noon.
Just sick of these so called experts. Give it a few months and they will all be saying something different. Next week, we were wrong about SAD. Ultra-processed foods are good for you.
@@jumbledb0798right - but this specific video features very Fit (already / currently) experts saying FOR THEM .. they personally aren’t fasting as much these days… But the point / magic of IF is more keenly felt on those losing weight to GET to that Fit state, finally. Certainly, once you ARE in Maintenance Mode / Healthy Weight… you don’t need to be as aggressive with Fasting as maybe you were initially. But that’s vastly different from “ Fasting is not useful - period.”
@@AlekTrev006 Your comment is obtuse. On the ine hand - you acknowledge these experts are sharing their personal anecdotes on the fact they, personally, are finding fasting is not benefitting them... But then you turn around and imply that they are saying fasting is not useful...period. Which IS it?
The biggest take away is that fasting can be a tool to use, but make sure your not excessively straining your body with multiple day fasts. Intermittent fasting seems fine as long as you are getting enough protein and rest to recover.
@Goatie89 Your 'takeaway' on what they are actually stating here is , imo, correct. How can so many here just hyperbole their way thru this video and come up with a skewed version of what's being said? Lol, are there 2 video's here?😅
So this is what the experts say Mr. Delauer? I thought you were the expert. So we need more protein now? What ever happened to restricting protein to achieve autophagy?
All these experts that are going against fasting are very healthy and fit. They don't need to fast and hence why they might find fasting detrimental. They don't have much fat to lose. For those of us who have a host of metabolic conditions are are overweight, fasting is still probably highly beneficial.
I have to agree; at 61 (now 63), I began Keto (which saved my life; long story), but I didn't know about the increased need for protein. With multiple 2 and 4 day fasts I lost a lot of fat AND lean muscle; the latter which I had from my many years of working out as a younger man. Now I have a shoulder issue because of it; still trying to recover. So I take creatine and have upped my protein; doing mostly carnivore diet with some fasting on the weekends; "flexing out" of Keto (per Keto Kamp's channel); often doing two small meals and a big one - with some carbs once or twice a week.
For me fasting is life saving. I'm pre-diabetic and very overweight. With severe insulin resistance. No matter what I've tried including a GLP one I cannot keep the weight off. So I put myself on a strict keto diet and started intermittent fasting. But I'm doing this to heal a body that has been under stress for a very long time. So for me while keeping the muscle is important because I'm an older woman it is also important that I get this weight off and don't go down the road of diabetes. So for those of us who are not at a healthy weight or not at a healthy point in our lives fasting might just be the thing we need.
Fasting is neccesary for a specific group of people. Wisdom is 'nothing works for everything' so yes, fasting might not be for everyone, . However only the ignorant denies the benefits of fasting on re-setting cellular activity. Thanks.

Of course, do what you want. But to say YOU are the only expert on your health is a bit ridiculous. How do YOU know what is actually bad for you? Did someone tell you that eating utlra processed food was very bad for you, or did you work it out for yourself? My point is that with all the garbage food around nowadays we simply can't determine what's bad for us without some kind of external information source. When we ate what we found and grew we didn't need to know any of that.
Im 56. 5 ft 9. July 2023, i was 230 pounds. Today with 16/8 fasting, and weight lifting, im at 180. Still have 10 pounds to go, but what ive learned in the last year has turned my health and self confidence around. Getting enough protein is key, I agree. 👍
Great episode Thomas! Intermittent fasting is something that has always worked best for me as a way to lose body fat, most likely because it makes compliance to a calorie defect easier. I have tried many variations over the years of fasting and choosing what to eat during my feeding window, and I find that an 18/6 fasting schedule (usually switch to 16/8 on heavy training days) and following a modified version of Stan Efferding's Vertical Diet works best for me. ( I cut out the white rice, potatoes, and orange juice when I am trying to drop body fat.)
I'm 60. I regularly do 18:6 fast. Sometimes this is done by skipping breakfast, sometime an early dinner/late lunch at work at 3PM, then breakfast 9AM. I work out 4 times a week, 5PM weekdays, morning on weekend, and always eat plenty of protein after I work out, meat and plant. Any other times I stick to mostly plant-based proteins. DESPITE FASTING, I HAVE GAINED PLENTY OF MUSCLE MASS! So much, that is is obvious in the mirror. I am not competing in any sports, so really how much muscle does one need, if one is obviously very muscular? When I did a 4 day fast I did lose muscle, but I got it back soon enough. So I do a prolonged fast only a couple times a year just to hopefully get into autophagy. Fasting is the easiest way for me personally to keep off the fat. My priority of low belly fat and sleep well (I can't go to bed too hungry). Since I lost weight this way five years ago, I no longer have heart palpitation or puffy feet!
I've always felt that it is super easy to regain muscle after fasting. I water fast for usually 4-7 days a few times per year, and no question, you do lose some muscle. But within 2-3 weeks, I'm back to making progress at the gym. Sometimes you have to take one step back to propel you two steps forward.
@simplenothing OR you could be the type of genetic outlier known in (mostly gym circles) as a 'gainer' - put on muscle very easily. ...def, not common for the majority. And so... not recommended, imo, for the average person. Another case of 'What's good for the goose'... NOT necessarily 'good for the gander.'

There are people who are constantly looking to optimise there diet or workout regime and they never ever stop , so they are in a constant state of change and these people are front and centre of this movement.
The best benefit of fasting is that you lower anxiety and dettach emotions from eating, so you are not associating bad or good feelings with food, so you feel really liberated, you feel control of yourself, pain is not that bad, fear is gone. That alone is worth of it.
I eat non processed foods only and base my intake what I feel I need. It’s more of an intuitive thing. For me eating between 11am to 6pm is the sweet spot for me. Do regular high intensity and long easy cardio on a beach cruiser.
There was also a video stating cold plunge like what Joe Rogan was doing was actually harmful in the long run. There was an actual study proving harmful effects. Now I am also skeptical about this long sauna Rhonda is advocating.

The key to fasting is knowing what to eat during your feeding window. Make sure to consume enough calories and proper macros according to your individual goals and needs.
I implemented less fasting once I got to 18-20% body fat that was over 10 years ago. I was doing IF and keto after that I was able to add back in healthy carbs and more flexibility on cheat meals. If I ate something bad like for ex a cheat meal and a slice of cheesecake from the ccfactory, I'd do a 24-hour fast and some type of zone 2 cardio. It works for me. @HH-gv8mx I'm no doctor, but fasting too often can wreck your metabolism. I hit plateaus in the past from fasting too often. You should probably track your calories for a week and see where you're at. Maybe cut down fats and add in a few healthy carbs.🤷♂️ walks after meals helped me greatly as well.
Some people are overly focused on losing weight fast. It can easily turn into an eating disorder and obsession. They become weak, lose muscle, and they are anxious all the time. They start to believe they look healthy.

@HH-gv8mx Longer fasts do not work for me either. I was in the hospital for 9 days at the end of last year. I could not eat because of surgery on my colon. I was shocked at how much muscle and strength I lost. It took weeks to get my stamina and strength back. So long fasts are not for everyone.
So what about people that want to do a monk fast or a more extreme ADF? Do they need to double up the protein on eating days? Like lets say I'm doing ADF, Monday I fast.. so Tuesday do I need to get 400g of protein because I didn't get the 200g the day before?

The reason fasting is dangerous is the food companies aren't making any money when you are fasting.
That’s exactly why I’m very skeptical about these studies that are coming out. You can sway any study to get a result that you want.

Agreed. Started fasting regularly. Down 50lbs to 240 and feeling so much better
the whole point of this long video is just to monitor muscle mass loss due to decreased protein intake as a result of eating only in a limited time duration.
keep up resistance training, keep taking adequate protein and all essentials &antioxidants and maximize authopagy potential of the body, such a fundemantal evolutionary defense mechanism alone by itself can take care of so many issues fundamentaly wrong at cellular and even at dna level inside the body. you're good to go.

Everything in moderation, including fasting. And for women especially, it's not wise to intermittent fast longer than 16/8. One longer fast per year (3-4 days) is sufficient. Also: too much protein is hard on kidneys.

Keep going. Too many conflicts of interest these days to get any sound advice. IF does work.
@smarro71 I am also doing 18/6 intermittent. Did you restrict calories as well to lose that 30 lbs? Did you increase exercise? Did you try keto?
Coffee is a drug. It's not good for anyone!
For over 50 years the best single thing I can do for my health is a 3 day fast. Period end of story. Thanks

If the "experts" claim it is bad for you, what they mean is their is no profit in it and fasting is good for you. Follow the money on the study.
Definitely 👍
right! fasting is great! these experts are newbees
Good and bad are absolutes. Only the Sith deals in absolutes.
Full fasting is positively impactful while intermittent fasting is done to keep the pounds off. I recently fasted for 9 days, with dry fasting firstb6 days, and water fasting the next 3 days and I can feel the huge difference than when I only do intermittent fasting. Real full fasting works
I heard many experts say sjooting yourself in your head is really bad for your health so I’m trying that out next

Fasting is good for people I eat breakfast but finish eating by 4pm/ 5pm I’m only eating 2 meals a day and feel great at 61 my skin is glowing.
There should be a delineation between fasting for someone in already perfect health with lots of muscle (like these “experts”) and fasting for someone that’s overweight with insulin resistance. Nothing lowers blood insulin levels like fasting.
Exactly, I do it to keep my metabolic issues in check.
Similarly, current exercises need to be taken into account. When I trained for a half marathon I could tell my body didn't want to fast. I am now recovering from a knee injury and my energy expenditure is low and my body once again enjoys fasting.
Bingo! This is what I was going to reply with. Good job 👍

I think fasting is BS. Just change your food quality and you don't have to suffer by not eating.
All of these people are fairly lean to begin with and they train hard compared to most. I think you should talk with Jason Fung. His clinic uses fasting for insulin resistant metabolically challenged overweight people. Fasting works best for them to improve their quality of life in every way.
Most people eat too much ' fasting is not skipping meals just going longer without food '
8 years fasting and I feel the best ever. I am tired of these so called experts like Attia and Patrick and their waco studies and conclusions.

The thing about fasting is that no one makes money from it.

I feel and look amazing, better
than I did in my 20’s….I’m 44 this year.
As a Type 2 diabetic, I will keep on with intermittent fasting with a keto diet! Great interview with so many guests. Thanks for your help.
In my opinion, he's taking words out of context and as you say, he's mixing it all up to have people believe what he wants to enforce in this video.
is called biased towards fasting...
I have been doing either 16/8 to 18/6 for over six years, I am soon to be 60 in the best physical shape I have been.

You are on the money. 🎯

Yes, I agree.
Treating diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer's is Big business. If "experts" recommend something, find who's sponsoring and act accordingly .
Gabrielle Lyon, offers several key takeaways on the reconsideration of fasting practices:

The world record for 198 lb squats is only 365 lbs for the 70+ age group. At 67, I have done 465 and plan on shattering the record by age 70. It is ALL about strength for longevity.

Great video, it's great that they share their personal exoerience and changes. Thank you
Fasting has been practiced in many religions for centuries ❤ Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights to be more pure. Fasting is healthy ❤
Ok .... it was NOT to "be more pure"... he's Jesus, he couldn't GET any more pure 🤔
I couldn't agree more!
Our bodies were created to survive famine.
So are you suggesting that fasting for 40 days is actually healthy? Jesus also walked on water, that doesn't mean I'm jumping off of my cruse ship😂😂😂
He isn’t real though
@@Dreamingofyou317he existed, he just isn’t God.
All these experts that are going against fasting are very healthy and fit. They don't need to fast and hence why they might find fasting detrimental. They don't have much fat to lose. For those of us who have a host of metabolic conditions are are overweight, fasting is still probably highly beneficial.
That's it.
Nailed it 🎯
Yeah and their fasting routines seemed to lack applied intelligence but they just seemed to do it machinely without wisdom.
I like how the term "expert" gets thrown around --there arent any in a field with more questions than answers
I only eat 2 meals a day but i go to the gym and work out hard. The other day, my work colleague said my muscles are huge.
Thanks.
They got 6 or 7 figure deals to change their perspective?
"Fasting is neccesary for a specific group of people" which group? Can you elaborate, please
@@BlobBlobkinsa group with a detail mind set, organize, critical, open thinking, and able to test the theories, understanding what they analyze on what works and what doesn’t.
BS!! This is the same eat for your blood type crap!! The human body functions the same way for everyone within reason. An animal based diet with fasting and exercise is the way to go. The human body was never meant to eat constantly throughout the day. Its designed to go days even weeks with little to no food. Feast and famine diet lol
@@usrIO30581l ah understood thanks, I thought with specific health conditions, I'm testing it myself right now
Call me a rebel, but I do what I want and what suits me. Period.
The only "expert" on my health is ME.
I disagree that Myalgic encephalomyelitis is able to do this.
Im 56. 5 ft 9. July 2023, i was 230 pounds. Today with 16/8 fasting, and weight lifting, im at 180. Still have 10 pounds to go, but what ive learned in the last year has turned my health and self confidence around. Getting enough protein is key, I agree. 👍
Be intentional and listen to YOUR body. That’s what this comes down to. YOUR body knows what it needs better than anyone on RUclips. Thanks Thomas.
Yoyr body is the real barometer and not the ''experts" opinion.
@simplenothing
OR you could be the type of genetic outlier known in (mostly gym circles) as a 'gainer' - put on muscle very easily.
...def, not common for the majority. And so... not recommended, imo, for the average person.
Another case of 'What's good for the goose'...
NOT necessarily 'good for the gander.'
The guy here was fasting almost 1/5 of all days... once weekly, 3 days monthly, 7 days quarterly...
There's a guy who had crohns disease... he lost over 30kg in the hospital... and put it back on in only 12 weeks... muscle is actually very easy to regain, even after extreme loss...
There are people who are constantly looking to optimise there diet or workout regime and they never ever stop , so they are in a constant state of change and these people are front and centre of this movement.
Thank you for this- I relate to all of this. I have done it all and now I feel the same way all of your guests do. It was good, but not optimal.
The best benefit of fasting is that you lower anxiety and dettach emotions from eating, so you are not associating bad or good feelings with food, so you feel really liberated, you feel control of yourself, pain is not that bad, fear is gone. That alone is worth of it.
Where's the study that corroborates the theme of this video? There's no shortage of fasting studies
I used to rabbit hole on RUclips about health. For many years. Now ignore everything.
I eat non processed foods only and base my intake what I feel I need. It’s more of an intuitive thing. For me eating between 11am to 6pm is the sweet spot for me. Do regular high intensity and long easy cardio on a beach cruiser.
Great vid...bringing it all together. So smart people still need to go back and review and then adjust.
There was also a video stating cold plunge like what Joe Rogan was doing was actually harmful in the long run. There was an actual study proving harmful effects. Now I am also skeptical about this long sauna Rhonda is advocating.
Thomas, I appreciate the content you put out so much! I’ve been listening to you for years. You always seem to be in connection with the other experts I follow. Thank you for the information you provide and the research that you do!
The whiplash. I can't keep up. I feel great while fasting, so I frankly don't care what they say. 😂

why are so many commenters here so.... negative at new ideas and new studies? Thomas is just helping you make informed decisions. and sometimes data changes. Take what you will, and leave what you don't. No need to be snarky about it.
Summarizing: Fasting can be beneficial IF the protein intake amount is correct. 1gram of protein per pound of body weight (or target body weight).
The key to fasting is knowing what to eat during your feeding window. Make sure to consume enough calories and proper macros according to your individual goals and needs.
THIS
I implemented less fasting once I got to 18-20% body fat that was over 10 years ago. You just have to feel your body out and figure out what works for you. Imo, of course

Longer fasts do not work for me either.
If anybody gets a chance to answer I didn't hear it in the video but does this also include a 16-hour intermittent fasting or is it just fasting longer than that
