The Evolution of an Alaska Log Cabin ~ Stockade Style ~ Our progress

  • Check out the progress of our new stockade style log cabin! This is our 4th one in Alaska, but a new style!
    Building an off grid cabin can be challenging. At this property all we had available to use was aspen, so that's what we used! It's an unconventional log to use for a log cabin, but by doing a stockade style we were able to use the aspen in 8 ft. lengths. This works out because that's about as much as you want to handle and also it's about the length you can find straight sections of aspen. As long as you have a good eave hangover and the logs are protected and sealed, they will do just as well as spruce or other timber. It was an interesting build and a LOT more work than a traditional log cabin. Our land is sloping so that made it difficult as well- hauling logs uphill is NOT FUN!
    But- by using what we had we didn't have to purchase logs and many of the doors and windows came from the dump- score!
    We still have a lot of finish work to do but the roof is on and we have a cabin!
    Thanks for your views, comments, and support!

      my first guess why would be less logs so a faster build ... watching all these video's is making me jealous though ... poor health is keeping me cooped up in the city and i hate every single minute of it ... wish i was out in the bush like the pair of you get to

      I hope both of you guys get to feeling better soon. As for you question Survival Lilly...The logs don't shrink lengthwise, so in a stockade style cabin you don't have to account for settlement of the logs like you do in standard horizontal log construction. BUT, the biggest reason we did it this way was 8' logs can be carried and set by ONE person, and The Aspen we used, isn't straight enough for much more than 8'. Also we had built 3 other log cabins but none like this so we thought we would give it a try.

      @therealgirlinthewoods  6 лет назад +70

      Hey Lilly- this is Aspen, the most prominent wood on our property. Rather than buy spruce logs, we decided to use what we had. In order for this to work, it is better off standing vertical as this is not a type of wood usually used in log homes, and it's also only straight in short runs. But that makes it easier to handle as well! Our other homes were made of spruce. We wanted to try something new, and the Aspen is beautiful and free! We have long eaves that will further protect the wood after we seal it. As long as the wood stays sealed and dry it should make for a beautiful, strong home! Thanks for your comment and for watching! Cheers- brooke

I was in junior high before I knew we were poor. I learned so much because we didn't have money. Things like you don't actually need what you can't pay cash for and how to do it for yourself. Being poor has been the biggest blessing of my life. So liberating. Anyway, thank you for the great times you provide me. I so love Maisy Daisy and Moose and all the cats!

    I have to chuckle I’ve seen many chainsaws used to rip lumber so I suggested to my husband back after hurricane Ike that we use the chainsaw to rip what was left of a pine tree stump to make it easier to get rid of lol he proceeded to tell me you couldn’t use a chainsaw in that manner. I told him about the mill frame set up designed for chainsaws lol bless his heart I wish he was still here so I could show him the full potentials of a chainsaw.

    There is a precious video in which some off grid kids watch Bush radical build the off grid cabin (this video here). He inspired the kids and they’re going to try to do the same. If you go to “Sarah of the North” And look at the videos where it says “boys living off grid during the pandemic build a cabin in the woods”. (Something like that). You and your husband will truly enjoy that video. It’s precious. And you guys inspired it❣️

    Kudos to you guys, I've always have dreamed about wilderness living off grid. When I was a teenager I built several wooden forts/hangout places in fields and on the side of my moms house for me and my friends. I built one tree house back then and much later when I was 58 built a tree house in my front yard ash tree that was 16 feet in the air. May be someday we will live in a place like yours building our own homestead off grid. I'm 60 years old but still able to do big projects like that.
