Several years ago I used to volunteer with the canal and river trust clearing rubbish from the Blackburn section of the Leeds Liverpool. Some members came along with magnet and hook and took out all sorts of metalwork from a few bridge areas, we piled it all up by the side of the canal for collecting, trolleys, scaffolding poles, tools (electric and otherwise). Then got told off by the CRT supervisors saying that they now had to collect and dispose of it and it would cost. Many a time one could hear boats scraping on objects under the water, so they are doing a good job shifting it.
Hi James, great video as always, I met you and the guys magnet fishing on the lock , you all helped me get through, thanks for your assistance and conversation, great channel, good job by the magnet fishers, Regards Karl
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Hi James , have moored up at Rickmansworth , having a rest and ordering an anchor for the Thames , waiting for family to join me for the Thames transit . regards Karl
Gosh, that was unexpected! I agree that magnet fishing provides a wonderful service regarding the canals. Well done. I'd never heard of that before. -Leigh
The gun appears to be a modern 1911 copy. Note that the hammer is cocked, the safety is on, and the magazine is in. If this is a real gun, that's almost certainly loaded and John is briefly pointing it at is abdomen. If you find a gun- 1) assume it's real (unless it's obviously not) and loaded and 2) don't point it at anything you don't want shot. Those are two basic gun safety rules. Please pass that along to your friends. I don't want to see anyone hurt. Good job on cleaning up the cut. It's incredible what you pulled out with just a magnet.
Morning James it was a good day had by all nice to meet you finally glad you enjoyed your magnet our aims are to clean up the canals and to bring it to people's attention how much rubbish is actually in the canal will send you a link to a video Will Go live next Sunday we are up that way again in a couple of weeks let us know if you fancy another go
Morning James love your vlogs have only just started watching utube discovered narrow boats and have become addicted to watching them. Have followed your story from beginning it’s great to see how your boat is looking. Have good day.
That was a bit of excitement. Seems odd the CRT are not happy with the hobby, it must be a good thing and recycling the finds is good too. Thanks James. Take care.
Hi James happy new year, just caught up with all the vlogs from the 19th , boats coming on well and looking good it’s amazing how few tools you need to do a job , keep the good work up and hopefully see you one day .👍
The CRT should be grateful for the magnet fishing, it's shocking in this day and age as there are places to recycle and dispose of un wanted ribbish, yet irresponsible people carry on dumping what they want. I say good job and carry on magnet fishing.
Absolutely fantastic video James on magnet 🧲 fishing 🎣 Seen some videos of it being done in the canals in Amsterdam with interesting finds to 😂 But that gun find was incredible and hopefully it can be linked to a crime and the culprits found 🤔
Just thought I should add most CRT people are great in what we do it is just the old one usually the paid ones .all volunteers are usually really great
Magnet fishing is quite addictive. I follow quite a few of their youtube channels. My best find was a bag of coins although it was just 1s, 2s and 5s in the small bag lol. Also found a very old air rifle that was more rust than metal. Plenty of safes and tools. Ive seen some stuff taken out of the canals that would damage a canal boat so I think what they do is a great service. Just a few people that leave the rubbish that give it a bad rep. I would guess that their is a gun for every mile of canal which is scary but it all depends where the bridges and locations are.
Even if most things found are junk it still cleans the canals of garbage and that's a good thing. You'd think the CRT would be happy someone is doing it.
Many boaters, myself included have been magnet fishing for decades. It is only relatively recently that it has become more popular. For windlasses try the first lock near a hire boat base. As with most activities it is the selfish few who do not consider others and give the whole activity a bad name. Many years ago I was pulling a magnet along the canal at Stoke Bruerne with a friend. As we passed someone my friend casually said to them 'he's trying to teach his dog to swim'! As for the gun, it could be Dirty Den!
"Live firearm" - early on I'm watching him hold it by the barrel and putting it face-up in the bucket and cringing the whole time wondering if it could be loaded. These are things you learn as an American just by osmosis re: "how to not handle a weapon." 😜 1st rule: always assume it's loaded and could go off.
@@MsVanorak No idea how a prop gun is loaded. But with a flintlock, you dump gunpowder in and wadding (newspaper cartridge the gunpowder's in) and tamp it, without any patch or bullet... The reenactors I know take safety VERY seriously and would not let someone else load a weapon they were expected to fire.
You always see in the movies, the bad guy throwing the murder weapon in the creek, river, canal but you never expect there to actually be one. That one looked like a .45 caliber or a 9mm.
Hi James Happy New Year fella, thanks for sharing the video and taking us along to do some magnrt fishing today which was a real eye opener as to what can be located when doing so. Agree found a gun and its like well now wtf police turn up shine a torch on it and say not my responsibility I know let's call another team out and leave it on the tow path under some tissue 🤣 pure comedy 😉 Have a great week now catch up later.
We had to wrap it in a bag so No one could see it while we waited for the fire arms unit to come and remove it as normal police aren't allowed to touch it and there was a bullet stuck in the chamber
Its a Kawasaki KH400 engine from about 1976 - 1978. The 400 had straight-sided cylinder fins, all the rest had rounded fins. I had a 400 for some years, I’ve now got the 750 version and its a savage.
Wasn't that the one they had to detune, because it had a habit of flipping when it hit the power band? My mate had a KH250, and you had to be a bit careful not to give it too much wrist in low gears. Allegedly, officer. ;o)
@John Edwards I had one of those while giving a friend's GPZ1100 a bit too much wellington. Scared the crap out of me, and instantly removed any thoughts as to how good a rider I was. Perhaps I should have passed my test first. :o) It was over forty years ago, and I think I got away with it.
The trouble is, this activity encourages any clown with a length of string and a magnet to try their hand, frequently losing either, or both, in the cut with the result being that some poor unsuspecting boater can get it entangled around his prop shaft with the magnet clamping irretrievably to the underside of their boat... it's happened to me and I've no doubt it's happened to others. This is one of the reasons CRT frown upon the practice. Unfortunately, not all magnet fishermen are as responsible as this particular crew.
The magnet fishermen would not be doing this if CRT had a system of cleaning the canals. As they don't deal with the lazy boaters or passing idiots then this is a great way to clean the canals. I'm sure you would agree that you would rather have a piece of string around your prop rather than a gun or bomb. Good on them x
I think the problem is the irresponsible magnet fisherman who leave the unwanted metal on the tow path. Then the CRT I have been told, have to treat as contaminated waste . Unlike these chaps who remove it all well done.
The canal and river trust should recycle scrap metal thay pick up it would help the environment the whole way round then just as an example look how much scrap Ben picks up on his boat in the video. The CRT just mix it in with normal waste and it is not recycled at all shocking
I like a bit of MF. The nearest I've been to being a millionaire is an empty cash box. Some of the junk ... sky box, metal drain pipe, small value coinage, flashing light from vehicle roof, mobile phone fishing lures .. no weapons though. Oh and I have a boat.
Very interesting - 2 Microwaves, a Laptop and a Gun, sounds like a Warren Zevon song. Glad to hear a firearm has been put away. But the laptop is more intriguing to me at least. And that motor back cylinder head looked like a Kawasaki (just a guess) - wonder what it’s ownership status is?
They get some stick sometimes, not sure why - the worst case, they're cleaning the cut at least! They could probably put some membrane down where they're doing their thing though, stop churning up the towpath.
We usually do but it was very muddy from the day before ,my wheelchair got stuck in a few places so putting down our mats would have made no difference when we were by the wooden bridge
Ya know it's funny... magnet fishers in the US find guns all the time and US cops know exactly how to deal with it. I can't help but think that you all have a bit of a better situation over there... it's RARE and even your cops don't normally handle guns. Way safer at least LOL.
Airsoft gun for sure, plod class all guns that fire a projectile as a live gun. It would be great to see the report of the police though? Any news on the shaft for the gearbox yet? Can't wait to see the repair and you back on the cut!!
Uhh I think that gun looked like a russian tokarev! Ummm there was a reply to my looks like a russian gun. The Tokarev was a copy of the American 1911!
Wow a gun, crikey, I feel, as you, if organised and responsible, then they are doing a great service, far touch rubbish in the cut that isnt being cleared out, fishing wire, shopping trolleys, etc, then they are doing everyone a favour, well done is all I can say. Sadly there are those who'll moam, but they'd moan at anything.
That was fascinating. You are right, they definitely appear to be a professional group that are a benefit to the CRT and boaters.

To think the canals mostly date back as far as the 1700s, most of the things found are modern day, just think what else is buried in the silt
We heaved out some really old iron rails - maybe 150 yrs old - they were well buried and took 3 magnets to get a grip on it
The CRT should be grateful for the magnet fishing, it's shocking in this day and age as there are places to recycle and dispose of un wanted ribbish, yet irresponsible people carry on dumping what they want. I say good job and carry on magnet fishing.
