  • You don't need a PhD to understand used oil analysis. Certified Lubrication Specialist Lake Speed Jr. walks you through the process of used oil analysis. Each of the four laboratory tests are explained in plain language. Your engine has a story to tell, and the used oil analysis lets you hear that story.
    The next step in listening to your engine is reading the report. After that, trend analysis is the "early warning, doppler radar" for your engine. Here are some links to videos that describe the whole process.

    Smart people who have common sense prefill their oil filters. There is a recent youtube vid from lake speed jr who scientifically tests and measures the amount of wear on a dyno engine that was started with a prefilled filter then with a dry filter. The oil analysis tests confirm conclusively that non pre-filled filters cause substantially more wear to the engine, particularly rod bearing wear which was extensive. Its hard to dispute the results of highly scientific tests when the only variables are pre-filled and non pre-filled oil filters. The facts pretty much speak for themselves without adding old farmers tales passed down from a persons grandpappy

    Wide viscosity range oil vs smalerl viscosity range?
    my manual says I can run 229.5, 223.5 in 0-40, 5-40, or 5-30
    comparing the specs sheets from Moble 1 for the Europen 0-40,5-40,5-30 (all meet 229.5 and 223.5)
    Question: For outside temp above 60 degrees. An oil with a wider larger span like 0-40 vs 5-30 what should I know about that oil? will one give me better fuel eco and more wear or ? (I think my engine runs when hot about the same temp regardless of the outside air temp or I think in theory it should. So the thought is the high number should not matter? The high temp on my oil being if I shut down with the turbo hot and not let it cool down after driving hard.) Why would I be told from Moble 1 customer service that I "would get better gas mi/ less engine resitance with 5-30" but when asked about understanding the spec from their web page got 'follow the cars manual"?. All 3 oils being acceptable in the manual.
    In specs from mobile 1 gives
    Grade, Pour Point, Fash Point, Kinematic Viscosity@ 100 C and Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 C, Density,
    what should I know about the specs or does it not matter and just change that oil every 3k and not the 15k per book?

    Got a question for you about my build and what oil weight I was to use. I have 6.0 with high lift cam and ls7 lifters and the other basic mods to go with that. Engine builder was adamant about 10w40 conventional only, no synth oil! He claims synth oil causes wear in the valve train and he has no issue with it, only issues with synth oil. What have you noticed when using Driven oil with engines like this ?

    • @themotoroilgeek

      The problem is not with the oil being synthetic or conventional. Valvetrain wear is primarily about the additive package. I’ve seen great results with the synthetic blend GP-1 oils. In fact, the lowest valvetrain wear I’ve seen is with the GP-1 oils.

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Год назад +1

      Thanks for the question. In my experience, any solid particle additive in the oil increases wear in the long term. The best wear protection additives react chemically with the surface to create a thin, sacrificial film. In my testing, the solid particles increase abrasive wear over time. We have some independent research going right now, so we hope to have a video on this subject early next year.

      @@themotoroilgeek cool thanks for responding the reason I ask is some of the oil treatments on the market have this hexagonal boron nitrate as the micro metal filler it does withstand extreme temperatures but most of the manufacturers of such products keep the msd information secret I think this is this nano ceramic stuff on the market

    • @themotoroilgeek
      @themotoroilgeek  Год назад +1

      @@jonschwartz9669 Ahh, yes! Oil chemistry and how things interact is highly complex, and things do change because of emissions and fuel economy mandates. As such, it is an ever evolving balancing act, and that is the key perspective. Oil performance is about the balance between the base oils and all the individual additives. It is not a sum of the parts. It is the synergies amongst the components.
      That's one of the reasons for starting this channel - to go beyond the marketing and "backyard science" and get to the real stuff.

In a previous life I was a maintenance manager responsible for equipment that operated normally with electric motors, but each electric motor had 2 internal combustion backups that were required by ANSI standards to be started weekly at a minimum. The only measure that kept us from changing the oil almost monthly, was to ensure the motor got up to operating temperature any time it was started.
