I remember when I could relate to this comment, that was many years ago. What I've learned is to not compare your art skills with everyone you see. That means saying "oh, that person is so much better than me, I can't do that" or "oh, I'm way better than this person". It is not a good mentality to develop, in my opinion.
This way of thinking can really impede your progress, it will constantly put you down. Try to stay motivated in just creating art, find the passion, even if it's not your best. It will take hundreds of bad and ok drawings to make a few good ones.
My advice for if you want to be better at your art is practice drawing everything, keep a sketchbook, and draw as much as possible. Try doing a drawing a day. Also, try to get feed back from other artist and regular people, weather it's your friends, your art teacher, or random strangers. DeviantArt is a great place to go for this. There are groups made just for young, just starting artist to get feed back on their art.
And the most important thing about art is to always have fun with it.

Artist Grace, because you probably don't really see what you are drawing. Are you good at finding differences games? Train your eye and start with small things like eyes and lips, a whole face has too many features and farther apart, its hard to get the proportions right; an eye, on the other hands, has everything closer (you have to see how many milimeters above the pit of the eye is the pupil and things like that, or use a grid). Basically, use reference points to know where to drop each line, once you are good at this, you can jump to faces.
I love how you focus more on what not to do, I think it will help me get even better at my drawings♡

Don't say that, everyone's art is good in some way or another :) if you continue to practice you may get to the "Do" section in time but don't put yourself down

There isn't a do or a don't, you can draw how ever you want and it is still art. It may not look good to other people but you are proud of it!

Well, yeah, you can do anything and as long as you think it's good, then it's good. But, if you want to achieve a certain style or effect, there are some things that'll give you that and some that won't. It depends on what you want the final piece to be, I guess

To anyone watching / important disclaimer !
There are several different types of art and drawing styles! (Rae totally acknowledges that and draws in different styles often herself!) That's what's so awesome about art, is that you can slap something on paper and people will probably form opinions on it. (Hence modern art! There's not much "detail" in it or realism, and people still pay a lot of money for it!!) Point is, there's no right or wrong way to draw, however there are loads of tips for drawing in several styles! Take in the technical advice and tips and use it to create your own things.

I love how in your do's and don'ts videos, on the don't side you always make mistakes that most beginners actually make. Most other video the tips are composed of things like "don't draw eyes as circles, don't draw randomly pointing eyelashes, etc.". It's a lot more helpful this way!

My apologies for the long ass comment, i just felt like writing it
I've been drawing my whole life but started with portraits like 4 years ago. At first i didn't want to practice too much because the results were terrible, and the faces resembled to nothing like the person portrayed, facial gestures were just innacurate or awkward (i still gotta practice this, some of my newest portraits still look like shit because i make their gestures too harsh).
What helped me learn was centering on shadow zones, not lines, not even the face itself, just marking the limits for the head, eyes etc so i dont go out of bounds. So i just basically did shadows till i got to see the face taking shape. This is because at the time i was pretty bad at "realistic" linear drawing (faces, nature.. idk) now that im better at it, my portraits are more linear based, but anyways , even outside of portraits, i wouldn't recommend people to use really heavy lines all over the drawing, even if it's like comic or something, i've always found it visually more appealing when lines have different pressure points and let the lines more free (?) but if you're for a realistic look you wont ever need lines to pop out, so
I kinda use heavy lines but just in places where there are shadows or that i want to emphasize for some reason, and i do this AFTER i had the whole face drawn softly. But i'm not the most realistic , i shade with kind of defined pencil strokes , tho i sometimes do it smoother. If it's not charcoal, i hate smudging, and even if it is, i'm not too keen on doing that and will probably end up making strokes over the smudged zone, idk i love patterns and textures.
So yeah, if somebody starting with drawing or portraits is reading this, don't give up, try different things if you don't see any progress (so you basically dont get tired, there usually IS a progress) and over all things, enjoy

my art teacher always had ago at me for smudging my work to make shadows! i find it odd that somehow my portraits are better than anything she could do lmao boy am i glad im finished with school. i always find that smudging gives a more realistic look because u wont see all the pencil lines and u can build more layers ^-^
