Realism takes time, and I want to get things done quickly haha yeah that's basically why I probably always be more of a sketcher My attention span is about an hour at most :p then I'm off to do something else
There's something special about a face... The face is the mirror of the mind, the eyes of people reflect the desires of their heart... I guess life is a reflection of what we allow ourselves to see... eyes are very similar to paintings in that regard, eyes often times say more then words can... if you can say it in words there's no need to paint it... Always love to see other artists at work. Great video.
at my art school they didn't allow us to use an eraser or blend with fingers. Everybody can achieve a soft transition with a finger smudge but being able to do it by controlling pressure on your pen is something much more difficult and requires more practice, which at the end helps you a lot. As for the eraser, this makes you very conscious of your moves and actually frees you to see all of the lines you created so just like watercolor forces you to think out your move.
teaching somebody to not use erasers is a terrible idea, unless it's a practice or a study. as for smudging, only use that to put in big blocks of large very light color in my opinion
"Don't blend with your finger, don't go back and forth on the hair, don't do outlines" Me, thinking how I do all these things: "shit" To my defense, it was on a semi-realistic drawing-
I would recommend really trying to take your time when sketching, and measuring everything out (can be with a ruler, your pencil, even your finger) before you move onto the coloring/shading. This can take a lot of your time, but don't be discouraged. I always rushed my sketches and called it a day until I realized that was my mistake. That, and practice a lot, because with each new drawing, you learn to observe more accurately. Good luck!
Grid method is really helpful. Lay a grid over your reference image(in photoshop or GIMP or something), then draw a light grid on your paper, and just take it a square at a time. It makes getting basic outlines, shapes, and proportions so much easier. Then you can just erase the grid on your paper and spend more time on detail and shading, etc...
@@saturn_stars she cut the sides off of a shoe box, and made us draw our other hand just from what we were seeing. we couldn't look at the paper we were drawing on. the practices turned out like shit, but once we learned how to draw without staring at what we were sketching, they turned out great.
For the proportion just try to use a photo editing software and use the grid lines ..Then draw the grid lines lightly in your paper now you can just fill the individual grid boxes and you will have a near perfect proportionate rough sketch ...Now you just erase the grid lines and start adding details
I used to have a lot of trouble with getting an accurate sketch. I would always do it freehand and it took me at least an hour just to get a small, somewhat basic accurate sketch. Now, I don't use the grid method, but I find just simply measuring for perspectives really helps speed up the process. For example, I will measure with my pencil how the distance between the eyes compares with the size of the eyes. When I was a beginning artist, I loved these videos, they helped me out so much in learning how to achieve realism. Now that I really know the basics, I've been able to find my own ways of doing it, a more sort of stylistic approach. For example, the only pencil I use is an HB mechanical pencil. I love to just sit and curl up with a blanket and sketch realistic fanart. I find it super relaxing. I also don't use any sort of blending tools. I find I have so much more control and get a much cleaner look when I don't. I think this definitely depends on how well you can control your pencil and also the kind of face you're doing. For example, I love doing elderly people because I find wrinkles a lot of fun, but with younger women, there is more smooth surface, makes for more of a need for blending.
This video has been so helpful to me... every time i feel a bit off with shading the face or the eyes or just drawing a realistic face, i refer back to this video... It's just "The One"...i hope other people feel the same way i feel about this video...it's super helpful...i will of course recommend to anyone hoping to learn how to draw realistic faces😊❤️❤️
I'm a self taught artist , been practicing realism since I was 13, glad to know I'm following all of the "do's" 😊 I'm still working on perfecting proportions though, I don't like tracing, I feel more accomplished with the finished result if I've drawn out a sketch beforehand, just takes practice
Same I am self taught too! I found out my own ways to make exact proportions and sketches, and I followed all the do's in this and got amazing results! So glad she made this :D
this helped me alot! i found some don'ts what i do too, so this helped me to improve myself! and it gives me the motivation to do art, because i never know HOW to do these realistic drawings. i'm a realistic art lover and i do it myself, i have been doing that for past 2 years. and now i really understand that only by trying and being patient i can do something i want!
I was never good at drawing, lots of stick figures and what not. But after the military I needed something to occupy my broken mind and drawing became ther solution. Im still miles away from being good at drawing and everybody in this comment section is undoubtedly leagues better than me lol, I don't deny that one bit. But I love these tutorials and I try my best to replicate them. I will keep giving er hell and hopefully one day I'll be almost as good as you, color not included in that goal as adding colors really really confuses me. Anyway, thank you for this wonderful tutorial.
As an artists I trace myself to safe time and it helps a lot and like you said if your busy you don’t have time too draw something out all the way but you still have to fill it all in using layers and I think this is something all artist can agree on
A very good way to improve base drawing skill is doing quick timed drawings, focusing most on the angles, shapes, and overall form rather than the fine details. This will be frustrating for some, easy for others, but will in the long run help most with drawing things in proportion. (I’m a 3rd year (illustration) at an accredited university for art and design. one of the biggest things they’ll teach you is this method when learning to draw). In this tutorial one thing to remember when rendering, don’t focus on one area, it can mess up the shadows/highlights in other locations in the drawing, the best thing to do is shade in bulk, do your darkest darks together, lightest lights (save for last usually) together. This rendering method is also much faster than sectioning off areas while shading.
I am am a good drawer when I was younger I always saw the negative in my drawing but you.....you made me see the positive side so thank you so much for helping me see the positive (I'm an 11 year old)
Even when you make "donts" . Look so good. Everyones style is diferent indeed. But i still follow you. I want to draw like you... even if i dont reach THAT LEVEL.
i still don't suggest gridding/tracing method (especially the tracing one) because freehanding your drawings will help you improve faster, practicing accuracy and proportions is way more important than shading/rendering. im good at shading/rendering but oftentimes my drawings are slightly different from the actual photo, and that is because i focused more on shading it rather than the initial outlines. plus i feel much more accomplished drawing in freehand because im definitely learning something new and becoming better at being a self-critique. this is of course just my personal opinion
if you are a professional artist who happens to have many commissions and have not much time, then tracing/gridding method is essential, but if you are a beginner artist then i suggest focusing on the outline first than shading/rendering. if your proportions seem correct, then thats where you start focusing on shading your drawings.
While I agree tracing isn't always the best, painters prefer to transfer the basic contour cause they're painting, not drawing. I think it depends on what you wish to paint or draw, if you're practicing shading then i think to focus on that it's okay to transfer or if you draw/paint from photographs but if you want to draw or paint from life then you should learn how to draw the contours and such
For me, and it seems you as well, freehand drawing is preferred because I am and (as it appears from your comment) you are currently focusing on our drawing skills. Once I start focusing on my shading and highlights I most definitely will use whatever technical tools available to help lay down the sketch so that I can spend more time perfecting those skills. I do agree that we should regularly return to freehand just to keep our hard learned skills up (mind you, those skills are still in their infant stage for me and it seems like it will be a very long time before they are mature enough to be comfortably put away for me to concentrate on something else).
I definitely agree with you - if you don’t learn how to freehand draw, what are you gonna do if someone pays you to draw them while they sit right in front of you? Are you gonna put your paper on their face and trace them?
A great great tip I find super helpful is putting paper over a tablet,of a celeb or person you want to draw and outline there proportions, then that way afterwards it’s easier to shade and make it look a little more realistic, make sure when doing this though don’t press to hard on the paper cause it will scratch the screen and to turn the brightness up!
Thank you so much for the do's and don't tutorial in drawing.i learned a lot from you, also for the great technique and materials to use.thank you for inspiring us you are one a the great artist I've been watching on.👍😊
Passed up on the most inportant part of drawing, getting the proportions right. Can you show how to line up facial features and determine proportions on eyes, nose & lips? How to proportion the skull and shape? I believe that the foundation to having a great wire figure from which you start shading as you did on the correct drawing is what can help beginners most.
When I was really young, I was obsessed with horses (who wasn't right lol) and I used to trace them. Over the years, the shape of their bodies became engrained in my mind, and in my hand. Now I can sketch them freehand really well. I was too young to know that was a technique, however it really helped.
Excellent tips! What I especially like is that you’re breaking the rules that I learned in art school👍 and it’s working out beautifully for you. I draw well, but this is going to take my drawings up a notch or two. Thank you so much!! After reading the comments on here I’m a little surprised that there’s anyone that complains about your video, as if it’s your responsibility to make sure they learn absolutely everything that there is to learn about drawing. This is as valuable as an entire art class, and it’s free content! Your work is excellent and I appreciate your generosity in posting these types of videos ❤️❤️❤️ I just subscribed😀
This video impressed me and the don'ts were just same mistakes I was doing in my arts .... By looking at the do's the drew a masterpiece drawing that look just like the refference image.... I was proud and all my family and friends praised it and me ... I really thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@coffeephrog4339 really? I know some of the gacha community is cringe, but some of them can draw. They are like any other artist, they just are also a part of the gacha community. Good tutorial. It's all about the time you put into the drawing. Knowing that the "do" drawing took seven hours to complete is extremely helpful. My portraits are taking me around three hours, and I'm beginning to see why it takes time to achieve a likeness. Thanks!
I always feel like I’m cheating if I’m tracing so I’m trying to get accurate sketches, but it usually takes forever to get it good. I’m gonna try the grid tool I think.
CakCakePARTY ye I get that, though I’ve figured that the grid tool helps me a lot. I’m gonna use tracing to practice I think. Hopefully that’ll help me too :)
I have taken up drawing again after a 20-year break - and no, I'm not ashamed of tracing. I've done 10 portraits so far and I notice tracing and shading helps me to learn about proportions. I totally enjoy shading, I hate getting outlines wrong, and really, I don't care about "cheating" as long as I'm having fun and improving. I just don't want to waste time on something that I can't do well. I will get better and try it again eventually, but maybe after 50 more portraits ;)
@@mirjamdominicus Tracing is if you put the original underneath and either very thin, see-through tracing paper on top or put both against a window or tracing frame that is lighted from below. I usually trace with tracing paper from a computer image, then reinforce the lines with dark marker, then stick both up on a window or on a tracing frame and draw the outlines that shimmer through on my thick paper. Just the outlines, and at least the proportions are right.
It's fine if you haven't drawn anything for a bit, actually when I leave drawing for a bit and come back it looks like I actually improve. And shaky hand are nothing to stop you from drawing.
Itsme_Yap Stephen I think you could get better or worse but since you’re watching this video, I think you’ll improve🙂 everything’s a learning process and you’ll get there!
True purpleboye, shading takes hours because it doesn't look right at first but when you are a professional artist you don't have to worry about how much you shade your drawing, so true shading is hard
Um excuse me but you're so talented your "don't" girl is still really pretty and somewhat decently shaded lol your "don't" is better than most other people's "do's" lol
well no, seeing as i don't go around teaching people impromptu lectures and teaching their own comments back to them seeing as I'm not a self important twat. i dont even talk to people i don't know anything about online. all i did was leave a compliment here and then go about my day. its not my fault some toddler came and decided to amuse herself by playing sand castles with my comment. i don't see why i should not leave compliments on videos i like. so no, i never fucking considered it. does that answer your question? But maybe you on the other hand should crack open a case of ice cold Shut It. Perhaps I can help you by employing the Block feature. You're welcome XD

Also hair has always been a frustrating challenge for me, so I'm eager to try again after watching this vid!! Well done! Thank you for not rambling and keeping on point throughout. Didn't seem like 27 minutes at all!! Valuable information!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you for saying it's ok to trace. Sometimes art advice can be so rigid when it comes to drawing, painting, materials, tools, etc.
I feel bad when I trace because people will ask me "did you trace it?" And when I'll say "yes" they will think I'm not talented. They don't know all the work that comes after tracing. They just think once you trace, your drawing will surely look good. While it's not the case. There's much more work to be done after tracing.

Dries Ketels couldn’t have said it better my self!
Damn
that was deep
at my art school they didn't allow us to use an eraser or blend with fingers.
Aquarellina how the heck do you get it smooth without smudging??? Even if you go lightly surely there’s lines
They taught us not to smudge. You can do smooth gradients with various graphite pencils (H and B series) if you are patient enough.
teaching somebody to not use erasers is a terrible idea, unless it's a practice or a study. as for smudging, only use that to put in big blocks of large very light color in my opinion
*cough* blending tool *cough*
i use watercolor alot and do realism (which im bad at) and yes what you said is true
If I could do the “don’t,” I would be a very talented artist to my friends and family.

When I draw faces, they usually turn out okay, but they never look like my reference. How do I make my faces look more accurate?
Aubree Tanner OMG sameeeeeee

BrenDUN Urie Yeah, tell me about it!

Another big mistake people make when drawing from reference is that they draw what they think they see, rather than what is actually there.
I do agree
my art teacher actually made us do an exercise where we couldn't see what we were drawing

@@saturn_stars she cut the sides off of a shoe box, and made us draw our other hand just from what we were seeing. we couldn't look at the paper we were drawing on. the practices turned out like shit, but once we learned how to draw without staring at what we were sketching, they turned out great.
omg, that's so impressive !! the values change is so small yet you draw them perfectly !!!
The don'ts are roasting me 😂😂😂
For the proportion just try to use a photo editing software and use the grid lines ..Then draw the grid lines lightly in your paper now you can just fill the individual grid boxes and you will have a near perfect proportionate rough sketch ...Now you just erase the grid lines and start adding details
That's clever! I'm assuming that's what the "grid technique" she mentions is. I'll try that thanks
@@MagicBot.1570thank you, that's what I've been missing

Ive been doing realisim for 3-4 years im also self taught
this helped me alot!
i found some don'ts what i do too, so this helped me to improve myself! and it gives me the motivation to do art, because i never know HOW to do these realistic drawings. i'm a realistic art lover and i do it myself, i have been doing that for past 2 years. and now i really understand that only by trying and being patient i can do something i want!
One time I tried drawing a person and I showed my friend when I was finished. She asked me where I learned how to draw such a good blob fish.
Oof
As an artists I trace myself to safe time and it helps a lot and like you said if your busy you don’t have time too draw something out all the way but you still have to fill it all in using layers and I think this is something all artist can agree on
In easy way shading is the key to realism and even light perspective can turn your sketch into a masterpiece
You've really emphasised how important it is to take your time, congrats and thanks
I am am a good drawer when I was younger I always saw the negative in my drawing but you.....you made me see the positive side so thank you so much for helping me see the positive
(I'm an 11 year old)
amazing video! another important point is that you need good paper for lots of shading, it makes it a lot easier
Even when you make "donts" . Look so good. Everyones style is diferent indeed. But i still follow you. I want to draw like you... even if i dont reach THAT LEVEL.
you will reach that level dude, practicing all the time and not losing hope is key. it really just take years to be really good at realism.
You will
Hope you still haven't given up yet! ;3
You'll get there!!!
i still don't suggest gridding/tracing method (especially the tracing one) because freehanding your drawings will help you improve faster, practicing accuracy and proportions is way more important than shading/rendering. im good at shading/rendering but oftentimes my drawings are slightly different from the actual photo, and that is because i focused more on shading it rather than the initial outlines. plus i feel much more accomplished drawing in freehand because im definitely learning something new and becoming better at being a self-critique. this is of course just my personal opinion
if you are a professional artist who happens to have many commissions and have not much time, then tracing/gridding method is essential, but if you are a beginner artist then i suggest focusing on the outline first than shading/rendering. if your proportions seem correct, then thats where you start focusing on shading your drawings.
Elisa Shay is
I definitely agree with you - if you don’t learn how to freehand draw, what are you gonna do if someone pays you to draw them while they sit right in front of you?
Exactly what I was thinking. If as a beginner I can’t do the sketching correctly then why should I worry about shafing
Not gonna lie, even the "bad picture" looks better than any drawing I could ever do.
Truth hurts!!

@@evabaumannautorin can you explain to me what tracing is?
I draw and try to make a grid but that’s still difficult for me😇
@@mirjamdominicus Tracing is if you put the original underneath and either very thin, see-through tracing paper on top or put both against a window or tracing frame that is lighted from below. I usually trace with tracing paper from a computer image, then reinforce the lines with dark marker, then stick both up on a window or on a tracing frame and draw the outlines that shimmer through on my thick paper. Just the outlines, and at least the proportions are right.
@@evabaumannautorin now I know what is is, thanks. I never try that before and I don’t think it will work because of thickness of the drawing paper.

I feel bad when I trace because people will ask me "did you trace it?" And when I'll say "yes" they will think I'm not talented. They don't know all the work that comes after tracing.
