Actually, the intonation of brass is not mostly about the instrument but the people play it. In other words, we control the intonation of the instruments but the instruments control us. However, a terrible instrument may influent the intonation in general.
Very well done! I quite like this piece. John williams is an amazing composer and the soloist here is quite virtuosic and understands the piece to a very high degree. 10 stars from me!
Terrific performance of the JW Tuba Conc. On a separate note, is the conductor son/grandson/nephew of Kurt Sanderling, who made marvellous records in the 50's/60's? Never mind, bravo, Hans! If only I could begin to play the tuba like that!
@@edwardweaver1467 Well that's a pretty new "rule" that emerged in the modern classical music concert hall. People certainly clapped in between movements and even while the musicians are playing during Mozart's day. It does provide a more intimate and uninterrupted musical experience, but also massively cuts back audience participation. Honestly it's a little bit snobbish (at least for certain music).
Shame on other composers ! Here's a genius who not only composes but also plays and knows his instruments well. I can hear lex Luther march and close encounters UFO bleeps.

It's not John Williams playing, it's Hans Nickel. JW is a good pianist and also studied trombone, trumpet and clarinet.
Well spotted, as I've misquoted on this occasion. I did realise this afterwards. Nevertheless JW is still a genius. His non film music is entirely another universe.
Assuming his right pinky is pressing a valve, that would be a total of 5 since his right thumb is definitely pulling a trigger, operating an additional valve (I don't mean any disrespect at all in my response, for all I know, you know way more about this than me). Hans is also an amazing tubist and I know for a fact there's not way I could top any of his performances. Have a good day :)
Which probably is the reason why both you and your teacher STILL are playing trumpet... Are you among those who would criticise superb artists for puffing their cheeks, too?
@@tubenhans6190 I don’t play trumpet so much anymore; moved to keys. But no I love dizzy and Louis and the rest of em. Just my old teacher was a stickler for technique ;)
fantastic to see john williams performing his own music, truly a legend
Lewis Pastars well even I almost made the mistake
🤣🤣🤣
it's not him lol.
I was thinking the same until the end when he stood up and we could see him better. 😂
He has such a vibrant, exciting timbre and a wonderful way of leading the phrasing. Great player.
Hans, you are amazing! So proud to be your student! Thank you so much! Thomas
What kind of tuba of tuba is that?? It has execellent intonation!

You're his student?!?! so jealous
It seems the pupil doesn't deserve the master! ;)
It‘s an Adams „Solo“ F-Tuba! 🙂
This is one of the best renditions I've ever heard of this piece. Amazing playing by the soloist and with such a great ensemble.
Great! Some really lyrical playing was the most impressive! A lot to think about as a listener! What a sound from Hans Nickel!

Happy 90th, John Williams.
A demanding piece indeed... Nicely played both by the soloist and orchestra... I could listen to Mr. Nickel play all day long.
Holy crap I thought that was John Williams playing the tuba!
Hans you are a Badass! Tuba Meister!
Very virtuoso performance. Bravo 👏
Thank you!
This was a masterful performance, and the first time I've legitimately enjoyed listening to this concerto!
Einfach grandios!👏🏼
Es ist mir wirklich eine Ehre, dein Student sein zu dürfen, lieber Hans.
The Soundtrack Show podcast brought me here. What a beautiful piece! ❤️
Which particular podcast was it (date or episode number)?
Es ist unglaublich gut gespielt! Hut ab !!!
¡¡¡Impresionante!!! Mis felicitaciones para usted, Sr Hans Nickel. Saludos desde Argentina.
guy: you can't do a solo with a tuba
Hans Nickel: *Hold my beer*
HA HA… get him Hans!!!
Bwahahahahahaaa
In the first two minutes, he flexes sofa king hard.
Incredible!!!! One of the best performances I have ever heard of this work!!!
Espetacular já ouvi várias vezes. Perfeito som lindo
FANTASTIC!!!!!
Makes me smile listening to tuba 😊
Definitely John Williams. At the end I felt a chorus of "Duel of the Fates" coming on.
What a piece! Thrilling!
Thank you!
We're glad that you enjoyed our rendition 🤗
que armonia y sincronización...!!!
1:27 superman reference was very nostalgic
Bravo Hans!!!
Que gran sonido, excelente interpretación
Nao me canso de ouvir. Esse homem toca muito.
Obrigado 😊
God’s cruelest trick was making the most beautiful part of the tubas range the high end
Wait John Williams wrote a tuba concerto? Nice
he wrote a lot of concertos for various instruments. unfortunately his concert music is less well known to the public
he is always great
Amazing performance of this piece
Bravo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful playing!
Great all musicians and "Jenius" Williams
nice tempo in 3rd movement. great playing!
suuuuuper gracias!!
Awesome!!!! Beautiful sound.
Wow!
Well done, Hans!
Yeah, this is a smaller horn in a different key and sounds more like like a French or Baritone horn! 👍🏻🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶💨🌟 😁🤨

It is indeed Kurt Sanderling‘s son!
@@WDRKlassik Thank you!
bravo !
For those asking I think the tuba is a Hirsbrunner F-Tuba HBS-388...I'm a low brass geek - hence my RUclips name.
5:30 lol people started clapping
That's bad. I believe that the audience is not supposed to clap between movements.

And the cellist behind Herr (Prof. ?) Nickel starts shaking his head.
John Williams ein Meister auf seinem Instrument! Herzliche Gratulation von Fritz Friedli
John Williams spielt doch gar nicht.
Funny how clarinet players move like soloists in a tutti orchestral passage.... woodwinds....

Does anyone have any any clue what brand tuba this is? It has pretty much everything I've been looking for in a new tuba
Adams Solo F
Everything except affordability - it's a $15K horn!
🎶💐🌟🥰
I didn't even know this type of thing existed, I thought only pianos and stuff got orchestra accompaniments
best of best!!!!
Is there 1 tuba or 2 tubas?
What tuba is that?
Jacob Wimpee HIRSBRUNNER IN F
Is he performing on an Adams F?
Yes, he is.
Too bad about all the pops and clips in the video. Tight performance..
Get rid of the ads in the middle of the piece. Ridiculous.
👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏 💐💐 ♫♪
Hans nickel yes kinda looks like john williams but isnt john williams
Only when he's playing
how come that three (or four?) valves are sufficient for a good intonation, when other tubas need half a dozen?
