As someone who played Shadow Madness when it was released, I can whole heartedly tell you with out hesitation... there are so many other games that exist is our reality that are a better time spent... Shadow Madness was a waste of my moms money back in 1999. I even found it late in the 2010's for emulation and thought I'd give it another go for nostalgia's sake and even though it was free... deleted it. In all seriousness. Our time is not infinite in this world and there is only so much time we have to play games before our inevitable demise, find another game.
I think it’s a great thing that a lot of older JRPGs are getting put on steam, in some cases the definitive version will always be on the original hardware but making games as accessible as possible is never a bad thing. Looks like I have more games to add to my wishlist now…
Yeah, absolutely. If someone has the choice, I'll almost always encourage them to play on the original hardware -- but in most cases I'd rather they get to play it at all, so PC is a really nice viable alternative
A lot of games, _especially_ FFIV, are not recommended to play on original hardware. FF4 in particular has a lot of bad translation issues, a few nasty bugs, and just stuff that doesn't work well in particular, and there's a certain place or two in the game where the balance is all wonk where you'll hit this giant difficulty spike unless you did lots of grinding. The Pixel Remaster version smooths these out and gives you some tools to help the player who doesn't have 100+ hours to put into an RPG, like speeding battles up a bit when you're fighting weak enemies. Also, FINDING original hardware is difficult, too.
Meh unless it's one of those games that use specialized hardware PC/emulation is just as good if not better... The thing you can't replace is the CRT screen, but if you have one of those it's a win
@@AvengingN00b I find that even Super Nintendo games look just fine on a regular modern LCD monitor when emulated. Sure, it's pixellated, but I don't mind that really. And playstation and beyond will usually have upscalers available for poly models (though sadly not for pre-rendered backgrounds).
Yay! Fantastic list and a great idea actually. There are so many JRPGs on Steam so it's not like you have to have a classic console to play them, or even a 'console'. Keep these lists up - love to see them!
I do try some before buying it, after some reviews researching, I would be a physical collector if I was rich, it's totally unviable for the average person in third world, but I'm tlad we have emulation n Steam sales
sorry to say that but I was searching for gems (games) on steam and wanted to see something about the games ...not the presenter all over the whole screen ...
Lul now that you mention it yeah idk why dude always puts his face over the games every 10 seconds so annoying we want to see the gameplay bro this isn’t twitch
Absolutely love Trails in the Sky, but for me overall Trails of Cold Steel story, gameplay characters etc can't be beaten! Falcom rock and I love the Ys games as well :)
I disagree, to me the three Trails in the Sky games and the Crossbell duology are clearly better than the Cold Steel series. But Cold Steel is still fun though!
Great list. I only recently really started delving into jrpgs. So im watching what i can to find the best of the best to get a base started. Lots in here for me to pick up
My issue with Sega is I wish they would re-release more of their Saturn and Dreamcast games. Remaster things like Skies of Arcadia, Shining Force III, the first five Dragon Force games, and the first five Sakura Taisen games, (And release them all in the west) then I'll agree they treat their older games well. I prefer Phantasy Star III to II but not many do in my experience. It definitely has great replay value since the choice you make at the end of chapters lead to completely different stories from those points (There's a time skip at the end of each chapter and you play as different characters with different abilities, different party members, and different political situations and problems based on your choices.) The setting is very different from the previous games but why that is eventually gets reveals Also you'll be playing them in the proper chronological order because the actual order the stories occur is I, II, IV, and then III.
I really need to get around to PS3. I've had it on the shelf for awhile now. I should block some time out to just play retro, I get too distracted by all the new games.
Shadow Madness gets a LOT of hate, and some have even called it the worst RPG on the PS1. Honestly, I don't hate it. It's definitely not the greatest, but it's not without its charm. "Secret of Mana Remake is good"... is what I would have probably said as well if a 4 year old had made it. As a remake, it's awful. It's bargain bin phone game. Just play the SNES version, it's way better (and I'm not even that big of a fan of SoM).
Good list, I know you touched on this in the video but it bears further remark; calling Ni no Kuni a "classic" jrpg is intellectually dishonest, almost feels like you were struggling to fill 15 slots. Although I agree that is a great game.
I actually feel stronger now that it can be considered a classic. It's 13 years old, for one, with animation by Studio Ghibli and music by Joe Hisaishi - feels classic to me! But people's definitions do differ.
Great list but I think you should move your camera to the corner or something so we can see the game vs your whole body covering the entire screen. Great work nonetheless.

You are right, Persona 3 IS coming to Steam. A remastered edition of Persona 3 Portable. I'm sad about that one. P3P is not bad, on the contrary it solved issues that the original P3 and P3FES had. Like your AI companion casting status effect all the times on enemies that are unaffected by them... Added a female MC and included some perks that were introduced in P4. However it ripped off the world map and story scenes. Now you navigate the world through menu (except in Tartarus) and when you speak with people it is not transformed in a visual novel. You only have a background, text boxes and characters portrait. Plus it's lacking the second part added to P3FES, "The Answer". I still believe that I true definitive edition of Persona 3 would be a mix between P3FES and P3P.
SYMPHONIA is my all time favorite Tales game. And it has the real Kratos in it yes I said it shots fired he's my favorite. 😅 Great video! Disagree with you on the music tho I love it. ❤️
Yeah I know that Sakuraba has some diehard fans, you're not alone. I do like the fight with the spirits song he wrote for Phantasia and then remixed for Symphonia, that's always been a personal battle music favorite
That's a good question, and I think it would primarily be more old school games (since most new games do find their way into Steam eventually).
