It can be the best cinematic masterpiece to exist, but if it disrespects the source material, then it's pointless to judge it on its own merit. If a movie is average at worst, then that makes it doubly bad
This is why the Street Fighter movie is considered to be good. On a technical level, it's pretty shoddy. It is also faithful and respectful of the source material though, enough to make the movie fun and enjoyable despite being objectively bad. According to the writer, they were given a partially-written early script and told "write what you want but it has to start with this opening," which is where the whole 'asteroid split the world into two dimensions' thing came from. He and his writing partner had also never played SMB and knew nothing about beyond that script. I remember watching the Super Mario Bros. movie in the 90s and wondering if anyone in the movie had ever even played the game. I also remember watching Mortal Kombat and thinking "Huh, someone actually played the game" as well as watching Double Dragon and thinking "I didn't play the game, but it didn't deserve this, I'm sure". I loved Raul Julia in Street Fighter because it was Raul Julia (I mean, come on) and even in the German dub his performance was so full of vigor and energy that I was legitimately shocked to learn he'd passed away shortly after filming had been completed and I was disappointed that no one else in the movie seemed capable of going the full 200% with their character. I had completely forgotten that DoA had a movie, I never knew that King of Fighters and Tekken got a movie adaption (HOW?!) and when Assassin's Creed and Uncharted got their adaptions, I was still so haunted by everything I had seen in the 90s that I refused to watch them. I have since seen Uncharted. It's a movie (and the fanmovie with Nathan Fillion on RUclips is still a better adaption at only 15 minutes length). I will not watch Assassin's Creed, hard pass on Borderlands, Sonic 3, Ghosts of Tsushima and the God of War movie and if, at one point, the Legend of Zelda movie is released, I will watch it, but I will have my hardcore Zelda fans on speed-dial in case I need to warn them of imminent danger. Tl;dr: I am traumatized by video game adaptions because so few of them actually represent what I loved about the games in the first place. 10-2 had the small excuse of the 90s and early 2000s era were stoner humor influencing everything. Borderlands has no such excuse, just soulless shitty writing.

Didn’t they make a terrible Bloodrayne movie? I’m not imagining that, right?

Yeah, it starred the T-X girl from "Rise of the Machines." (Uwe Boll might have directed that one too, I'm not sure.)

You can tell the era most of these movies are from, by the "preview guy" in the trailers

The Mario movie was so bad it made me think that you were never going to be able to make a video game movie look good. It was trash. Start to finish. Trash.

I legit loved the 90's Mario movie, and nothing you say can change my mind.

Loving Borderlands 1 and 2 so much, I can't get enough of Andy trashing on the Borderlands movie. Maybe the Borderlands 2 or Pre-Sequel movie will be back to standard lol

The Tekken movie was so bad people almost completely forgot it existed. It's a shame really because it had the character looks down (minus Kazyua) but completely fucked up the plot.
