It's incredible how swiftly she's able to move from screaming to singing and sometimes mix the two and never lose the pitch or feeling she's portraying for the character. That's so demanding on the vocal chords. Brava.

It's a Bette Midler trademark. She does it well My favorite was a one time "Mr Rockefeller." She's drunk, and sad, and amusing, and so on the money, we know the song already.

Yeah it's like the first half that's very showtuney is still with the mask on, then the mask comes off and she has the breakdown when the song changes, and then it turns into that manic post breakdown point at the end.

Bette Midler is an incredible performer, and no matter how much praise she gets, it’s not enough for me! haha She is one in a million. She plays to the back row but still makes so many choices that are subtle and grounded, making her ✨organically✨ larger-than-life. I swear, she was made for broadway! It’s a good thing she likes it. Her acting instincts are immaculate. Her voice is so strong! I always believe every word out of her mouth! God, she’s just the best! Besides it being a great song, it encapsulate and lay bare the pain, longings and despair of a pushy tiger mother of a super star. ”Scrapbook full of me in the background.....they take bow and you're betting zero....don't I get a dream for myself?,.....”. Brilliant and cruel lyrics indeed.

WOW - I had never seen Bette Midler in this role before but growing up with "Gypsy" I had always thought that she would be the perfect actor to play the role, and damn, I was right! When the TV movie came out I was in the Navy (it was Desert Storm and the hereafter) and never got to see it; it was this (and a few others from this content producer) that introduced me to it, and then made me go search and find the HD version of it.
She is incredible - and so perfectly fitted for the role! I have read a few reviews of some of the scenes from here on RUclips, and they say that "She's too much! She overplays! She makes a mockery of what Mamma Rose was!" But I think it was Rosalind Russell that *didn't* play the role big enough... if you read the actual scripts (and biography) the role of Mamma Rose was "bigger than life, with huge gestures, and excitement and despite being hard, was incredibly vulnerable!" (according to the original playwrights and choreographers of the play and film) - she was supposed to be a hard woman that also had a heart and believed in her children, while suffering from her own faults and fallacies of her failed time on stage that caused her to push too much, she still loved them. To me, Bette Midler put this forth brilliantly and continues to show how whatever part she plays she makes it perfect for the character.

Bette Midler is probably the greatest actresses I've ever seen. She and I are the same age and I've followed her career since I bought hear first album. I loved her singing then and she has just grown though every stage of her career. This has always been one of my favorite movies since I saw the initial movie when I was a young teen. I loved Rosalind Russell in the role, bought the album and sang along to it. When I found out Bette was going to do the show I didn't think there was anyway she could be better than Rosalind but I was wrong. Premier acting and singing skills. I will never agree with Midler on politics but to my mind she is the best actress I've ever seen...along with Kathy Bates. Fortunately those two are not in any real competition since they occupy different genre's but they have the same skills. I did get to see Midler live on Broadway twice and she is just as great live.

Kurt going into the "Why did I do it? What did it get me?" was for real one of my favorite scenes.

@@danielrowan111 I watched GLEE! For the very first time in April 2021 after hearing about it for so many years and I then understood why everyone loved and obsessed over the show so much. It truly was heartwarming and amazingly produced. I learned so many new hits too like this broadway song

People be trying hard to compare her roses to patti lupones they’re two different portrayals bette is more brassier than her tbh and patti gives more of a raw version and Angela Lansbury gives of the warmth of a mother who thought she had it all but didn’t and is living in a fantasy

Rose was toned down for the musical. The real Rose killed two people. And Louise got an order of protection after Rose tried to blackmail her. "Ready or not, here comes Mama."

In my opinion, Bette does what many before her didn't; managing both the singing and acting! I don't think even Merman accomplished that! 😁

Someone said this is the hoowhyte version of "And I'm telling you" The problem with this is Rose's Turn is from the musical Gyspy which came out in 1959. So "And I'm telling you" is the buhlaque version of "Rose's Turn" 🤷🏿‍♀️ The original Dreamgirls came out in 81. That said! WHO CARES????? They are both incredible songs sung by incredible ladies through the years! Music is the one thing for me that has transcended race. A great song is a great song.

Most of it is actually in G major, but it modulates a lot throughout the song. The everything’s coming up roses part is in A.

It's from a revival of the Musical "Gypsy". Many have taken it on but Bette slays it here! Brava!
