I wish my nervous breakdowns looked and sound this good.
Same!
Facts
I love when she does the booby shakes
🫶💝
I never caught that "hello Salem! My name's Winifred, what's yours?" In Hocus Pocus was a reference to this! I didn't know Bette Midler played Rose once!
Haha I literally just realized this too, and I play Winnie in a Hocus Pocus parody show 😂
I'm rewatching it right now after not seeing it for years and when I heard her say that I was like HOLD UP A FUCKIN SECOND, THAT'S A REFERENCE TO HER PERFORMANCE IN GYPSY! and came here
Well its interesting too cause this movie and Hocus Pocus came out the same year, so that line was probably fresh in her head😂
Me too!
I was going to say the same thing
It's incredible how swiftly she's able to move from screaming to singing and sometimes mix the two and never lose the pitch or feeling she's portraying for the character. That's so demanding on the vocal chords. Brava.
It's a Bette Midler trademark. She does it well My favorite was a one time "Mr Rockefeller." She's drunk, and sad, and amusing, and so on the money, we know the song already.
Vocal nodes in process
Either drink water or.. well..
@@chazzychizzle915 or what?
This is what I love about musicals. Talking but it’s singing, love love love it. Go and listen to The Ladies That Lunch by Elaine Stritch it is stunning ❤
@@chazzychizzle915that’s y this is a movie and not Broadway… she’s fine 😭😭😭
It's basically a nervous breakdown set to music. And Midler is one of the few who really shows that. Watch her at "Momma? Momma?"
Yeah it's like the first half that's very showtuney is still with the mask on, then the mask comes off and she has the breakdown when the song changes, and then it turns into that manic post breakdown point at the end.
In my opinion, Bette does what many before her didn't; managing both the singing and acting! I don't think even Merman accomplished that! 😁
The way she 'sees' her mother is better than any other Rose. I wish she'd done Mame.
@@FrankCutugnoangela Lansbury did it that’s why she won a Tony
Paty Luponne
This is really heartbreaking to watch because if you’ve ever missed out on your dreams and settled for less you can relate. Such a wonderfully written character.
I can relate to a parent pushing their child/ren down a path, in an attempt to live out their failed dreams, through them.
This is the female "King Lear." You don't take on the role unless you've got it....
Hear that, Arthur?
Reminds me of Mamas Family play where Eunice put her dreams on hold to help out a relative.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in her shoes I’ve tried out for over 7 plays and never got in not even ensemble and I poured my heart out in every audition
Because I was born too soon and started too late. I honestly felt her pain there.
The no applause at the end feels criminal.
I agree...I really missed it all through the whole show.
It’s suppose to feel like that because it’s only her and the applause is in her head which is why she takes a bow. They pretty much adapted this from the book by Arthur Laurent’s who didn’t like the movie sadly but Angela Lansbury was the first to play rose like how she’s described in his book
In spite of the music, this was an incredibly sad story. I read Gypsy's book, "Life with Mama", and her sister's book, "Wrecking Havoc". Both were horrifying and so sad. It's too bad the girls had no one, not even each other, given the mother's favoritism. This closing monologue was terrifying.
Bette Midler is an incredible performer, and no matter how much praise she gets, it’s not enough for me! haha She is one in a million. She plays to the back row but still makes so many choices that are subtle and grounded, making her ✨organically✨ larger-than-life. I swear, she was made for broadway! It’s a good thing she likes it. Her acting instincts are immaculate. Her voice is so strong! I always believe every word out of her mouth! God, she’s just the best! Nobody gets me ranting and raving excitedly about musical theater like Bette Midler! ❤
3:00 For me, this is the moment she realized that without her children, her whole identity was gone.
Damn, Bette Midler is one HELL of a talent. A real Star!
I Was Born To Soon And Started To Late......
Man That Line Hits Heavy
Bette Midler is so underrated!!! I felt every ounce of emotion with her!
Amazing Broadway voice, stage presence, a REAL performer.
Hollywood, are you paying attention?
She was THE BEST Rose ever.
Imo this is where contemporary American musical theatre begins. In this number. And Bette seriously delivers
Chills throughout! Bette Midler is one of a kind and a national treasure!
Barbara Streisand 🌟 🌹 🏆 set the modern-day example for Broadway- screen excellence 😉
This is one of Miss M most divine performances ever! Besides it being a great song, it encapsulate and lay bare the pain, longings and despair of a pushy tiger mother of a super star. ”Scrapbook full of me in the background.....they take bow and you're betting zero....don't I get a dream for myself?,.....”. Brilliant and cruel lyrics indeed.
You know you're a 90s kid when no matter the role you can't see Bette Midler as anything but Winifred Sanderson!
X2 😂😂
As a 70s kid, I see her as a different Rose. She played another character named Rose in the movie, "The Rose." It's loosely based on Janis Joplin.
Honestly i watched gypsy like 10 years ago, and I just found out it's the same actress 😂, now everything makes sense that's why she have such a voice, she is a Tony adward winner.
And the Seinfeld episode.
I feel this scene on a deep level. Always struggling in my field, watching other people get further in their careers when I know I have just as much to give. It's brutal. Bette Midler makes me feel every heartache that her character is feeling.
i've seen the movie, i've heard different incarnations of that number but no one never broke my heart like Bette, i have found the whole show here on "RUclips" you can be sure i'm going to whach the whole thing, Thanx you misse Bette Midler
Listen to Angela Lansburys rose she the first to give rose depth and the tragedy and bitterness that plays out in the song is so heartbreaking it’s like she’s losing her sanity while still clinging on
Bette Midler: An Absolute Queen
I've seen many actresses play Mama Rose, but she does it best! I get chills at that last belt.
and this right here is the reason Bette is a superstar!!!! flawless and seamless
Bette was born to play this part. So sad. So energetic and sad.
Let\s face it, this is up there with Shakespeare's Hamlet's soliloquy in Theatre History and most likely the harder act to pull off.
And so many god given talented actresses have knocked this out of the ball park. Kudos for Miss Midler for putting her own inimitable spin on it. Up there with the very best (but sorry im never gonna rank them, they're all too good).
WOW - I had never seen Bette Midler in this role before but growing up with "Gypsy" I had always thought that she would be the perfect actor to play the role, and damn, I was right! When the TV movie came out I was in the Navy (it was Desert Storm and the hereafter) and never got to see it; it was this (and a few others from this content producer) that introduced me to it, and then made me go search and find the HD version of it.
She is incredible - and so perfectly fitted for the role! I have read a few reviews of some of the scenes from here on RUclips, and they say that "She's too much! She overplays! She makes a mockery of what Mamma Rose was!" But I think it was Rosalind Russell that *didn't* play the role big enough... if you read the actual scripts (and biography) the role of Mamma Rose was "bigger than life, with huge gestures, and excitement and despite being hard, was incredibly vulnerable!" (according to the original playwrights and choreographers of the play and film) - she was supposed to be a hard woman that also had a heart and believed in her children, while suffering from her own faults and fallacies of her failed time on stage that caused her to push too much, she still loved them. To me, Bette Midler put this forth brilliantly and continues to show how whatever part she plays she makes it perfect for the character.
Just a reminder how absolutely amazingly talented she is! I havent seen this since my stage days back in hs 20ish years ago. Bette was my first cassette tape. Her and janet were my inspos.
And, she's singing live.
Baby I was introduced to Mrs. Midler through Hocus Pocus as a child but through years I run across gems lile this. She really doesnt get all her flowers shed really there with Barbera and Whitney
Bette Midler is probably the greatest actresses I've ever seen. She and I are the same age and I've followed her career since I bought hear first album. I loved her singing then and she has just grown though every stage of her career. This has always been one of my favorite movies since I saw the initial movie when I was a young teen. I loved Rosalind Russell in the role, bought the album and sang along to it. When I found out Bette was going to do the show I didn't think there was anyway she could be better than Rosalind but I was wrong. Premier acting and singing skills. I will never agree with Midler on politics but to my mind she is the best actress I've ever seen...along with Kathy Bates. Fortunately those two are not in any real competition since they occupy different genre's but they have the same skills. I did get to see Midler live on Broadway twice and she is just as great live.
That courtsey in the end was so graceful as if she were bowing down to a queen I love it!! ❤️😍🤩
Merman, Lansbury, LuPone and Midler. The great Madame Roses.
Even Imelda was amazing
You forgot Peters.
Tyne Daly was also very good. And yes, Peters was against type but also really something.
People need to give angela Lansbury more credit for playing mama rose because she started the whole mental breakdown of rose and her imagining the audience clapping for her. It’s terrifying but sad
The White version of “And I am Telling You” lol
😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂❤️
The person I saw Dreamgirls with also made that comparison.
Screaming
Lol
Having checking out all the versions of this song, Bette remains my favourite. So entertaining.
Saw Bette in Hello, Dolly! a few years ago. She was absolutely incredible and made it look like the role was written for her
Me too! Agree!
The amazing Bette Midler
This is so damn good
Wow.
What a stunning performance.
The Divine Miss Midler in true form !
This should've won Bette Midler an Emmy!!!! She lost to Kirstie Alley.... 😞😓😩
Of course I totally agree!! ❤️
Rip to Kirstie alley she just passed away on Monday
Kirstie Alley was way deserving in David's Song
Bette Midler is perfect for this.
I’ve JUST realized that Bette says the same thing at the beginning of I’ve put a spell on you!!! Hello Salem, my names Winifred, what’s yours?
Thank you so much for uploading this with better quality
My pleasure Joseph!
Ghatdayumn i love me some Bette Midler!! 💜💚
Winifred Sanderson after failing to curse Salem in 1993...

Thanks a ton for this! The first half of the song actually made me think this was an entirely different song that happened to have the same name as the one from Glee, and I was about to click off when I saw your comment. So yeah, thanks a lot!
Me wondering if Gypsy Rose mom was inspired by this song 😮
🎉Thank you!

She is a work of art. Incredible.
Amazing performance
“All that work and what did it get me..” meme owes its popularity to Rose and Glee bringing it to a new generation.
PURE BRILLIANCE. LONG LIVE MISS. MIDLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!
3:24 why youre here, the start to the breakdown from the ticky tockès
Actually the TikTok sound is from the Glee cover!
She’s just so great
Brilliant performance, Miss M.
Momma’s song and the movie Pearl… two people who are obsessed with fame, seeking the love of the masses. Twisted by circumstance, choice and fear.
she was the perfect person to play the part
1:00 (start)
3:19 (famous part)
Bette can still play this if this is revived in my opinion
Love Bette. Love the way she sings.
STUNNING
just incredible ✨
Showstopping amazing Miss M
The Divine Ms. M which will ALWAYS remain so..love you..😊❤️👍🌈🥰⚘️
And that orchestra, perfection.
Director Emil ardolino insisted on a live in studio orchestra and live vocals. And it makes all the difference in the world.
Bette has been my hero a very long time . Not changing any time soon
Ugh this is so good. 😭😭❤️
An absolutely amazing song this one. If you’ve ever put your dreams aside for others 😅 you’ll understand
Bette Midler is great! So talented.
Bette was born to play this part!!
Maravillosa Bette Midler me parece una mujer capaz de hacer todo musical comedia dramas y muy poco valorada en Hollywood🎉🎉🎉
shes so captivating, i aspire to be half as good as her
UNA DE LAS GRANDES DEL ESPECTACULO, SIN DUDAS!!!!! APLAUSOS!!!!!!!!!
Astounding
Amazing!
This movie was so good
Amazing
I HAVE LOVED HER FROM THE START,
Now that's performing for the back row
Astonishing!
I love how she annunciates
I love this movie
Oh my, she is gooood.
I've never seen this musical but i know this one song 😂😂😂
Someone said this is the hoowhyte version of "And I'm telling you" The problem with this is Rose's Turn is from the musical Gyspy which came out in 1959. So "And I'm telling you" is the buhlaque version of "Rose's Turn" 🤷🏿♀️ The original Dreamgirls came out in 81. That said! WHO CARES????? They are both incredible songs sung by incredible ladies through the years! Music is the one thing for me that has transcended race. A great song is a great song.
Im here because of Kurt! Like if youre a Gleek
Kurt going into the "Why did I do it? What did it get me?" was for real one of my favorite scenes.
@@danielrowan111 I watched GLEE! For the very first time in April 2021 after hearing about it for so many years and I then understood why everyone loved and obsessed over the show so much. It truly was heartwarming and amazingly produced. I learned so many new hits too like this broadway song
Hi
Nobody can traverse a stage in heels like the Divine Miss M.
EXCELLENCE, THIS IS HOW TO DO GIRLS!!!! THIS IS A MASTER CLASS YOU CANT PAY FOR!!!! Im a Ballerina, if i could do that........
What a badass!!
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Who's here in 2024?????
God she’s got a set of lungs on her 😍
In my opinion, Bette does what many before her didn't; managing both the singing and acting! I don't think even Merman accomplished that! 😁
If you want to skip to the part featured in Glee, it starts at 3:21!
I was in the audience that omg was amazing.
This is better than the original
3:40
"What does it get you as each one of them leaves you
ALL YOUR LIFE and WHAT DOES IT GET ya
thank out WITH THE garbage, they take vows
you're batting zero...
I had a dream"
All that work and what did it get me?🎵🎶 3:20
Bette did a great job as Rose
But Rosalind Russell was the best Rose......
What a great performance "Gypsy".
People be trying hard to compare her roses to patti lupones they’re two different portrayals bette is more brassier than her tbh and patti gives more of a raw version and Angela Lansbury gives of the warmth of a mother who thought she had it all but didn’t and is living in a fantasy
