Fine choice, Howard, and a rather extensive and clearly excellent group of candidates. For me in 2023, it’s my CZ P-07, which has become my EDC and has exceeded my hopes. And (fwiw) eliminating the P99 would be very difficult for me.
Ive been kicking around the idea on getting a Tisas Raider myself. After watching your video, you made my decision for me. Im going to my local FFL this afternoon to have one ordered. In your own words " thanks for enabling me " lol. Thanks for the past year of videos, and wishing you and your family a Happy Holiday Season and Happy New Year.
Good morning HR. A healthy and prosperous New Year to you and yours. I picked up 3 guns this year. A Masada Slim, a Tisas D10, and a PSA Dagger compact. The Masada became one of my favorite carry guns this summer. The Dagger I just got from their Christmas sale. About 100 rounds through it and it's grouping well and feels pretty good in the hand. The Tisas is the winner for this year. It's an accurate, hard hitting 10 mm and it's a 1911.😂 Looking forward to another year of great videos.
I have a 460V five inch full lug muzzle brake equipped X-frame revolver that is my favorite. Why? My first X-frame and shoots both rimmed as well as auto cartridges by use of a moon clip. Rimmed cartridges are 460 S&W magnum, 454 Casull, 45 Colt of ALL types and 45 Schofield. Auto cartridges are 45 ACP, 460 Rowland, 45 Super, 45 Winchester magnum and others like the 451 Detonics. Love the versatility. My favorite of all.
Great video! I love all my Tisas 1911's and hardly shoot my other ones any longer. The quality and accuracy is there and I hope they are starting to get the respect that they deserve. Thanks for all the videos and hope you continue bringing more informative videos in the coming year. happy New Year!
As a Marine, I couldn't possibly choose a pistol as my favorite weapon. General Rupertus would roll over in his grave. My favorite firearm of 2023 is a rifle that I've owned for several years and didn't even like. This year however, I gave it a total transformation and it no longer resembles its former self. It was a Savage model 10T in .308 Win that wouldn't shoot well despite numerous attempts to develop hand loads for it. So, I installed a 26" Shilen Match Select barrel, lapped the lugs on the bolt, and bedded it into a beautiful laminate thumbhole stock, developed a 175 SMK load for it, and now it's a 1/4 minute rifle... but I'm pushing for better.
Nice selection of firearms for 2023. I’ve been on the fence about Tisas only because of the country of origin. But your review shows it to be a good quality 1911 for the price. So maybe in 2024... Happy New Year Howard and to your lovely wife.
Not sure how much help I was in the enabling, but glad to have made any contribution, ;-) Sorry for your wife's (and your) loss. Hope 2024 is a great year for you.
I bought the Walther P99 Final Edition because of watching your video, and I also decided to buy the Canik Mete SFX Pro after seeing how much you enjoyed your particular Canik. Let's just say that I am the furthest thing from disappointed with either one! Thanks so much, HR, and here's to 2024 being filled with more great recommendations from you and Happy New Year to you and yours!
No excuses HR, you like what you like. I salute you for your pick. That is a nice gun. I got one gun in 2023, a G43X. My wife told me to get myself a birthday gift. (when your wife says go buy a gun, knowing that is what I would enjoy, who am I to say no?) Why did I get it and how do I like it? I love it. It is small, works like all Glocks, I shoot it just fine, and conceals so well. I wish everyone a safe and happy New Year.
I had a feeling that those would be your final 2. Tough decision for sure. Appreciate all the great videos this year. Wish you and Mimi a Happy New Year.
I got the mete pro sft this year and it's hands down my favorite... I also have the mete sft... Honorable mention to the panzer ar12 as one of my new ones for 2023
With nearly four decades of professional association with the 1911, you could say I'm a fan. I agree about the Tisas pistols. I acquired two this year myself: the Stingray and the Tank Commander, both in 9mm. (Arthritis has forced me to put the 45s in the safe) I'd love to say they're foreign junk, but I can't. I've found them to be incredibly solid performers. The Stingray is now my EDC.
That looked like a good idea to me, too. So I tried it. I got down to the last two, and I just couldn't pick a winner. Both are FN's, an FN FNX 45T and a New High Power. So I see how you were conflicted, but just couldn't pick one over the other. Thanks, that was fun to watch and to try. John
So many good Firearms to chose from! It's nice to have choices! My choice would have been the Walther P99AS. Wishing You and Yours a Blessed and Happy New Year!
Thank you, thank you for correctly pronouncing Walther! I'm used to most guntubers mispronouncing "ambidextrous" and just watch them while silently judging them, but to date, you are THE ONLY youtuber who I've heard correctly pronounce Walther. I don't judge the guys who mispronounce it like I do those who say "ambidextrious" because one is a foreign name while the other is an English word, but it sure was a pleasure to hear you say it right! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos and the education and entertainment you give us!
I just picked up the new Tisas Match .45 acp pistol for a steal, $624 from Impact Guns. A fully loaded stainless match pistol which I will take out this weekend for the first shots. Look and feel of the gun is outstanding.
All of my 1911's wound up with arched mainspring housings after a bit of use & I'm sure that will happen to any more I get. But your choice of the Raider makes sense because it's your video & subjective matters too. I'll be working New Year's Eve & New Year's Day so have a happy holiday for me.
@@hrfunk I'm not in law enforcement & only work security as an occasional extra job. I'm at my regular job this weekend & my biggest challenge will be avoiding drunks on the way home. Your caution, however, is well taken. Have a good holiday.
I was glad to see that the P99 made it to the last 2. It is a firearm that i have fired on several occasions and i believe is the best all around handgun out there. But i cannot argue with the Tisas choice because it is a amazing firearm.
HA! Excellent. The Raider! I was on the edge of my chair hoping you’d pick it! But I should have had faith! Chief! I hope you hade a very Merry Christmas, and all the best in this new year! There was an M45 on consignment last week at our local So Cal gun store, and if it’s still there? I’m getting it! Cheers Chief!😊
Man, I guessed almost every one all the way to the end! We must have a telepathic connection😆. I'm going to be adding a Tisas this year...maybe two? I sure do like the in depth reviews you are doing. No other reviewers go into this kind of detail.
H.R., I realize that you had a successful stint in the United States Marine Corps, and then a successful career in law enforcement. But I'm wondering why you did not pursue a lifetime career in the USMC. You clearly have the intellectual aptitude and communication skills that would have enabled you to rise through the ranks (Major, Colonel, General perhaps). I don't mean to imply that you made any mistakes in your career path in life, it's just that you seem like you would be a natural military leader & tactician. As far as the video is concerned, I'm partial to the Masada 9S, and hope to acquire one in the near future. Love the channel and a Happy New Year to you and yours!
This is a great question, really, and, I know it wasn’t asked of me but, I’ve often wondered the same thing about myself. USMC 1973-1976. I did rise through the ranks very quickly and had two meritorious promotions. Corporal in 18 months in peacetime was almost unheard of at the time. I could have retired from the Corps at 37 with 20 years in service. At the time though, that seemed like an eternity to me. It was longer than I’d been alive so my point of reference was limited. Also, as a product of a marriage between a GySgt dad and a Navy mom, born in the USNH Camp Pendleton, I saw the hardships of a career in the service. Dad deployed a lot, constant moving from assignment to assignment was just no good for family life. I concur that HR would have been an excellent career Jarhead and no doubt an excellent officer but, as he may also acknowledge, that transition is not a “normal” path. Enlisted to Officer isn’t nonexistent, it’s just not that common at all. We called them “Mustangs” because they “cut against the norm”. ;) Again, great question, thanks.
@@I_LIKE_GUNS_56 thanks for the great comment and your insight and perspective as a Marine veteran and the child of military parents. You make a lot of excellent points concerning the personal sacrifices and "hardships" that a career soldier would have to endure, and the burden this might put on his family. A decision to dedicate one's lifetime to military service would be a daunting one, especially for a young person with their whole life ahead of them. "Mustang" is an interesting term to describe the unusual and extraordinary career path of an enlisted man rising through the ranks to becoming an officer. It sounds like you probably had "the right stuff" to accomplish that feat along with H.R. Thanks again for your comment and for your service to our great country! 👏👍
Thanks for the question. It’s taken me a while to respond because I wanted to wait until I had time to compose an adequate reply. I’ll begin by saying that I’ve asked myself this same question many times over the years. There have been many days where I wished I would have stayed in the Marine Corps and followed that career wherever it might have taken me. Had I the opportunity to do it all over again, I would enlist as an 03 ground-pounder and stay in until they threw me out! Unlike Skip, I did not come from a military family. My father, to some degree, was “anti-military.” Having lived through the 1960s and seen some of his friends killed/injured during Vietnam, and seen how others were treated when they returned from that conflict, he did not encourage me to pursue anything more “military” than the Boy Scouts. As a result of that, I didn’t grow up hearing the stories of heroism, comradery, sacrifice, and devotion to duty that are common in homes where military service is common and respected. I did however, at a fairly young age, begin considering law enforcement as a future career. Throughout my adolescence, I started taking steps to pursue that course. In my state of Ohio, an individual cannot be certified as a peace officer until he/she is 21 years old. During the early days of my senior year of high school, it occurred to me that I was going to have to do something with myself from the time I graduated (a week or so before my 18th birthday), and the time I reached 21. Around this same time, a friend of mine who did come from a military family enlisted in the Marines under the delayed entry program. I talked to him about the Corps, and shortly thereafter I talked to his recruiter. In the Marine Corps, I could become an MP at 19 years of age (at that time, Military Police was the only MOS with a minimum age requirement). It seemed to me that I could get a head start on my law enforcement career, and gain some valuable/marketable experience as an MP, and be better prepared for a civilian law enforcement career after my time in the Corps. I had to spend a full year in the delayed entry program, before shipping out for boot camp in order to meet the MP age requirement. I graduated recruit training the day before my 19th birthday, so by the time I arrived for MP training, there was no problem with my age. I followed the plan I devised in High School, and if I do say so myself, it worked out better than I could ever have imagined. It wasn’t until I was out of the Marine Corps that I realized how incredibly special the US military is, and how privileged I’d been to be a Marine. The principals and discipline of the Corps reflect the finest traditions of service and citizenship in our great country. I was greatly enjoying my law enforcement career, and I was also acutely aware of how all the things I’d learned in the Corps helped to make me a better cop. Eventually, I started to miss the Corps, but by the time I was recalled from the IRR for operation Desert Storm, I was married and had an infant son. I felt too much obligation to my family to re-enlist at that time. Interestingly, in the days following 9/11, I did call a recruiter to enquire about re-enlisting at that time. He very courteously told me “you’re too old.” As it all turned out, I had a long and rewarding law enforcement career. I have no room to complain. Even so, as I said, there have been many days where I wish I’d stayed in the Corps.
@@hrfunk Well, Brother, stay in shape. I have a feeling we may need some healthy old Jarheads in the near future to keep our country safe…..I’m in the gym everyday, even at 67 just to stay prepared……in case. We won’t be too old then. ;)

I don't buy or own any imports but I enjoy your presentation style and will continue to watch and support your channel. Best of luck in the new year. Cheers 🍺
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Thanks for all of the great educational videos. I do appreciate that the guns you recommend generally are economical and often cheaper alternatives to more established brands. My personal pet peeve of the established gun manufacturers is that they try to scare people into buying their more expensive guns by basically saying "If you use a cheaper gun, it is going to jam when you need it most and you and your family will die because of it!!!!" Thanks for putting that lie to bed.
I’m slightly embarrassed this year. I’ve only purchased 2 firearms the entire year. I’m way behind the norm lol. But out of the 2, my favorite would be my Springfield Hellcat.
Thanks hrfunk. That Raider may be the only firearm I buy in 2024, a 1911 is the only thing I want and don't have. My best of '23 would be the CZ P-10, whether S or C or F. But the P-10 and I get along so well it may be the best handgun of all time for me. We'll see if the Raider changes that in '24, I guess.
I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and may you also have the best new year ever. I cannot fault your choice as my Tisas handguns have performed far beyond their price points. My own choice would have been the Walther P99 Final Edition but the Tisas is a fine handgun. You chose well and I look forward to your 2024 reviews and final selection.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours Howard. I really enjoy these favorite firearms videos every year. Thanks for the insight. I think I may look into the Raider very soon myself. Question- have you considered doing a video of your favorite of your favorites? Talk about difficult! It would be interesting to see though. Thanks again and have a great day! 👍🏻👍🏻
I have thought about it, and you're right. It would be very difficult. I think I've been doing these videos for 5 or 6 years now. Maybe when I get to 10 years I'll finally do that.
i had a good feeling that being youre still a Marine, any one of those 1911s would have been your choice for your 2023 favorite. call it intuition or just a gut feeling but i knew one of those would have been your choice
@@yetiskies9240 yes, I like the JSOC just a little bit more than the Raider due to the latter’s trigger shoe being a little rougher with the texture and because the former’s color is more conservative for EDC and it has a really nice magwell. It doesn’t really make much of a difference to me because they are both very functional and both priced way below a Colt, which is usually what I look for. The JSOC was my first Turk gun ever but the “Made in Turkey” stamp isn’t even visible on either gun which made me feel a little (but not much) better about my purchases. In the end these both are budget guns but since I don’t sell my guns, I’m not too concerned about resale value. The JSOC is the 1911 that re-awakened my interest in 1911s again after years of being in to other kinds of guns. Get both.
How far are you into the MAC 1014 testing? I was waiting on James Reeves’ test and burn down and I don’t know what happened with that so…I would like to get eventually even though I’m not a shotgun guy but have 3.
As you might expect, my testing was curtailed by the holidays in December. I haven’t done any further testing with the 1014 yet, but I’m planning to do more soon. Stay tuned.
Wish some better youtubers like yourself would do some deeper reviews on the ruger hawkeye "long range target" in 308. Mostly 7mm and of course all the new "goodluck finding" calibers. Very few videos out there on the 308 unbelievably Canada and Thailand have better/more in depth reviews than we do 😂
Thanks. Rifle reviews are always more involved than handgun reviews. A lot of that has to do with the distances at which rifles are tested. If I come across a Hawkeye, I’ll see what I can put together with it.
I imagine going through the top 3 firearms is a LOT like trying to poke fun at your wife. A lot of internal debate, anxiety and as soon as you do it you start second guessing yourself.
Quick question. It says your coupin code has expired on HOP Munitions website when you checkout. Is this just an oversight by someone or has it really expired?
No matter if I get the discount I will order from HOP I just want to ensure you get the credit because without you recommending I probably would of never ordered from them
I was sure you were going to go with the P99 but Jarheads are, well, Jarheads! It takes a lot for me to be political with my purchases especially when the product is excellent. However, the Turkish government's egregious support for Hamas reluctantly makes me eliminates Turkish firearms from consideration.
Wow. You caved to the Brandon's tyranny and registered? No wonder we are losing the battle. When Guntubers comply with tyranny, setting the example...no wonder the ATF feels emboldened. And you are a former Marine? Better take a looooong look in the mirror.
Ok i stand corrected. The email address aapears to be mispelled on webpage and i got my email back saying it was a bad email.
We called them “Mustangs” because they “cut against the norm”. ;)
Again, great question, thanks.
He very courteously told me “you’re too old.”
As it all turned out, I had a long and rewarding law enforcement career.
We won’t be too old then. ;)
@@hrfunk I'm extremely honored and grateful for your rather comprehensive and well crafted response to my question. It's honest, self-reflective, and filled with lots of personal details that give me insight into your career & life choices, and the rationale behind them. I hope that a lot of subscribers & fans of your channel will read this, as it gives us a better understanding & perspective of you as a human being, and the values and principles that guide you in your life and your work. A heartfelt "thank you" to you for your service to our country as a Marine, and for protecting & serving the public in your capacity as a law enforcement officer. It seems to me that your RUclips channel is a continuation of your dedication to serving and educating the public, this time in the field of firearms, self-defense, the shooting sports, and 2nd Amendment related topics. Your videos are informative, entertaining, and a wonderful resource for the firearms enthusiast. Congratulations on a productive and purpose driven life H.R., and a Happy New Year to you and yours! 👏👍
Something told me it would be the raider. I'm no marine, but that's a darn good looking gun. I was mighty tempted myself.
I don't buy or own any imports but I enjoy your presentation style and will continue to watch and support your channel. Best of luck in the new year. Cheers 🍺
Happy New Year Chief, and everyone!! I think that’s a fine choice!!
Thanks Todd. Happy New Year!
Great video, informative and fun, as usual! Have a great New Year and I'm looking forward to more great videos in the coming year!...
My favorite acquisition of this year is the Smith & Wesson 1903 Hand Ejector I got with my C&R license.
Oh, wait, perhaps you mean newly made guns....
All that matters is that it’s your favorite. Happy New Year!
@@hrfunk Same to you, and thank you for all your work here.
My pleasure Alex. Happy New Year!
Thanks, nice pistol!
Howard, please test the new gen 2 Ruger American rifle in 308. It would also be an excellent comparison to your new Remington 700.
Happy New Years.
If I get the chance I’ll do that. There are a lot of reviews of those new Rugers, but I haven’t seen any comparisons yet.
Like they say down under I P New Year!
thanks 'Sarge'
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
I’m slightly embarrassed this year. I’ve only purchased 2 firearms the entire year. I’m way behind the norm lol. But out of the 2, my favorite would be my Springfield Hellcat.
That’s a good one!
You’re welcome Sean. Enjoy those P10s, and Happy New Year!
@@hrfunk Thanks for a good year of videos, sir! Happy New Year to you and family as well.
PS, has that Gen 2 Ruger American caught your attention?
There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding those new Rugers. Maybe HOP will loan me one in the future. Stay tuned.
I knew that was going to be #1 for some reason Great choice!
Thank you and Happy New Year!
Thank you and Happy New Year!
I want to apologize for not being watching slot of your layest videos these past couple months have been choas we had our first baby a little girl and a new job. I work for a the county court house now so alot of my time is my daughter and the court house lol hope you had a wonderful christmas and happy new year
Please don’t apologize. I remember well what it’s like to have an infant. Congratulations and Happy New Year!
I must be getting to be too predictable!
nah ,just a Marine being a Marine. All Marines know that the 1911 cant be beat@@hrfunk
I've been debating on either the raider or nightstalker from tisas for my next gun...
Either one would be great. Personally, the Nightstalker is a little too radical for my taste. That’s not to suggest you wouldn’t like it.
Nice video, would like to see you do a Tisas Raider vs MAC JSOC comparison. The Marines Vs Army ;) thanks for all that you do.
My pleasure. Happy New Year!
@@hrfunk you too Sir!
Ohhh…that would be a good one as I have both and got them within weeks of each other.
@@AlexJay3211 how do you like them? I'm leaning towards the JSOC, thx
Get both.
Guesed from the preview, the mounted device was a giveaway, after having seen the review 😅
Maybe a video on ALL of your firearms?
I’m not sure I could do that. I have way too many favorites.
Stay tuned.
I knew it, you picked the USMC clone. Jeff Cooper is smiling.
In regard to the AR-15 in the video, is the barrel chrome-lined or is it the nitride barrel? Or is it the plain phosphate coated barrel? Just curious.
Neither. Just ordinance quality steel.
not the one i was expecting! i was betting on the masada.
Yep. Me too.
I confess! i skipped to the end. Good choice.
I knew it!! You're soooooo predictable HR! 🤣 Good choice and that would be my choice as well.
Excellent choice, no revolvers this year, hopefully in 2024, maybe the Henry big boy 357 magnum.
Maybe. We shall see. Happy Nee Year!
Dear Mr. Funk, can you review the Taurus TH45 please! Dwight
I will if I can find one. Thanks for the suggestion.
Been a great year, good video
Thanks Tom. Happy New Year!
BHSS Enhanced Browning Hi-Power??????
I thought about including that one, but it just didn't seem fair. I've owned that pistol for 6 or 7 years and it was just fully customized this year.
I imagine going through the top 3 firearms is a LOT like trying to poke fun at your wife.
A lot of internal debate, anxiety and as soon as you do it you start second guessing yourself.
That’s a very close analogy.
Quick question. It says your coupin code has expired on HOP Munitions website when you checkout. Is this just an oversight by someone or has it really expired?
No matter if I get the discount I will order from HOP I just want to ensure you get the credit because without you recommending I probably would of never ordered from them
If you give them a call, they can sort that out for you. Sorry for the difficulty.
I got the right email to work and they are fixing things I believe
I knew it would be the Raider.
All are fine firearms….
Good choice though!
You need more rifles so you could do a favorite rifle and favorite pistol video.
I bet you pick the Raider.
I was sure you were going to go with the P99 but Jarheads are, well, Jarheads!
It takes a lot for me to be political with my purchases especially when the product is excellent. However, the Turkish government's egregious support for Hamas reluctantly makes me eliminates Turkish firearms from consideration.
Understood John. Happy New Year!
@@hrfunk A happy Marine New Year from a sailor
Gaston Glock has died. RIP.
So I’ve heard. Prayers for his family.
Wow. You caved to the Brandon's tyranny and registered? No wonder we are losing the battle. When Guntubers comply with tyranny, setting the example...no wonder the ATF feels emboldened. And you are a former Marine? Better take a looooong look in the mirror.
I wondered how long it would be until I got a comment like this. I prefer this firearm as an SBR. If you like yours otherwise, that is your choice.
And you deleted my reply? WTF kinda Marine were you? A paper pusher?
HR i emailed HOPS about the doscpunt code. Havent heard back yet but betting its an oversight and that all codes expire at years end then are renewed.
Give them a call. They will get it straightened out.
Ok i stand corrected. The email address aapears to be mispelled on webpage and i got my email back saying it was a bad email. I then sent to what i thought ahould be the coorect email but once again i got it returned. So you might wamt to call them and let them know about discpunt code and email. Soon as i hear from you ill compete my order
Did you get my previous message?
