Enjoyed the video, always nice to see folks fussing over furrows! Perfection aside I just hook up my 3 bottom and go, no adjustments. Where I screw up I fix with the disc. After 45 years of plowing it works for me.
@franksmith7419 I have spent thousands of hours on a farm doing everything imaginable on thousands of acres, and I have never created a backfurrow this way, no matter how much you know there's always something more that you can learn. Your insult is not constructive in learning Frank...
I like plowing with my 1950 Ford 8n, I set the depth and angles, then after that I rarely have to look behind me, just look forward and listen to the tractor pull. If it sounds like it's pulling a bit too hard I just raise up on the draw bar lever slightly, then put back to original setting once it starts to speed up. It travels quite a bit faster than that with it's 2 12'' plows on it.
Great video! Nowadays we use a chisel plow on our wheat fields but on irrigated ground I still see some moldboard plows but they’re all tumble plows 8-10 bottom plows mostly. I’m a dryland guy, no irritated ground.
Could do with a follow up video! I’ve got the opening sorted in my head, but it’s the next bit I don’t really understand, where you go onto a neighbour’s plot. The finish I think I get, it’s the middle bit… ☺️
Ya the only thing I ever competed with when turning ground was mother nature. Get it done. It is competition I guess. But it is painful to watch sure enough.
Too bad you didn't have some nice sod for this video so it laid over a lot nicer. I match plowed in Southern Ontario, Canada for 17 years, in the 3 furrow class. using a 3x 14" Kvernelands mounted. 13" is better for that class, but we also used it as our main field plow. Best I ever scored was... 132 I think? Usually in the high 120's. Not bad for a hobby plowman. Nice to see a plowing video that isn't about 7 furrows of rollover plough leaving a result that looks like it was chisel plowed. :)
Well almost; only that is a BMC mini tractor, the forerunner of the Nuffield 4/25. The BMC Mini is 948cc, 2 inches shorter, 16 BHP, and doesn't have the cranked right side drag link.
My Grandfather had a neighbor who used a sheep as a Landmark to go straight across the field .. I think the sheep was in the field next to the field he was plowing across the fence.. The problem is the sheep started walking across the field and the Farmer plowed at an agnle across his field .. He was out there plowing all night trying to cover what he had done before any neighbors saw it ..
@Phil Hall No it really happened he was out there all night trying to straithen things out. Another neighbor used to like to go the Dance Halls drinking and staying out late.. He would put the tractor in the furrow and jump off sit under shade tree until tractor got to the end of the field .. then drive a puck up to end of field jump in tractor and turn it around.. He fell asleep the Tractor kept plowing until it ran into Indian Lake.. His name was Jack Clarke Vicksburg MI .. His Widow was still a Substatute Teacher at my High School in the late 1970's .. Her Son David Clark was a Kalamazoo City Police Offier .. he rand a Red Light responding to a Fire and T-Boned a Fire Truck ,,
Hey man! B 4 u start, your TRACK WIDTH is F A R too W I D E. - how can u expect a tractor - little or large to pull straight and efficiently - get your line of draft / draught ( DRAFT it is ) set right THOUGHT that even the BMC Mini had elementary draft control - so why the wheel - and so fa out PLUS ALL That weights on the plow ( Plough ). A well set plow doesn't need additional weights, Pulls better and will do a better job all round. ( FYI kindly refer to Ferguson and maybe Ransomes guide books on setting up plows Interesting commentary + your time taken to show how it goes in real time - the adjustments etc . good vid.
How much do you charge per hr, £ 0.1/6 Did you say, £ 450.00 an Acer, = 387 hrs That's if he puts his foot down. I reckon that's reasonable, I've got 112 acres to do, so I will pay you with my Pension, is that all right, well, I am rather busy at the moment, so if you have < past > buy then, get your son to pay me. As far as I know, he still has 97 acres to do. and he has been there for 3 weeks.
Bmc tractors do not have draft only a spoil just up and down. And with ground conditions as they are with hard tramlines you should weight the plough accordingly.
That's the hard bit especially when ploughing first run, I was always taught pick your spot ahead line your self up and not to look behind on the fish run. But need ya plough set right at the start
This is a plowing competition. They are graded on the quality of the completed job. It's altogether different from just 'making it black'. Quality plowing is an art form and a science, and real plowmen are a dying breed.
Am i missing something that your going so slow? Either its a competition that i dont understand or novodt knows what their doing? Definitely not doing anything to get something done.
@@ivorjones6618 I think I was joking on this one. That's actually a really good method for starting in the center of the field. I use it in the garden. Maybe not so much on a slope.Or a large field.

YUP. 44 Massey 3 furrow 12" tow behind plow with hydraulic lift. Also very straight for a 12 year old!
I have never seen a field started like that, I will definitely want to try this, very educational!
so you know nothing also

I've seen these competition video's for years but this is the first one that explains what exactly they are trying to achieve.
Last year, He won the never-ending ploughing competition,
The Weeds Grew Faster Than He Can Plough Them In.

This makes plowing sound really complicated.
I've watched a few plowing Day videos and they make it look really easy.
Right ,drive in feild ,drop plough to correct depth ,drive across feild , job done

I had JD M with a 2way single bottom plow, and would have had that whole section finished in the time I watched this.
Ahh, the Nuffield 4/25. What a sweet little tractor. d:-)

That dog is good at being in the way.
That is also my greatest talent!!!😊
It's probably not the 1st dog to die in slow motion
Nice information
That tractor is doing a good job to be so old, and the guy on it is doing a great job also breaking up that ground.
What model BMC tractor is that? How many hp?
I love old tractors.

How many horsepower BMC 1965 tractor has?
Yeah I just plow and in the spring I use my 6 foot tiller with my Ford 3000 diesel tractor it will take care of the rest of the ground
Sorry, but I have been plowing all of my life. Speed is critical to throw the dirt. He is going too slow.
The track width is also correct at 52 inches. It looks wide because it is a little tractor.

What a nice bit of vidio,I do plough, and would like to say what a great job you done there.
Hmmm trailer plows and 3 point hitch plows you can adjust the depth the first round..
Wow made this way more difficult than it is

Yes indeed! Such a fuss over furrows. If he had 8 or more to plow at a time, he might not be so fussy.
he is in a ploughing compition thats why fiussy
Ah from the way you miss spelt plough I assume you mean making a mess, aka American ploughing.
At this speed it would take the whole summer to plow a field.

If that's there plowing speed it must take months to plow 5 acres

clear as mud
Slower than Molasses in January. I can Plow faster with a one bottom plow.
It's a PLOUGHING match not a bloody race, the 2 furrow plough is doing nice.
These guys must get paid by the hr... Slowest thing I've ever seen
The dog want too drive😄
Now I know why people there are better drinkers than farmers...they are drunk farmers...clue less too!
Good luck running back and forth on the same furrows on heavy ground. You'll end up with a bunch of clod piles.
have you ploughed in a match at all that is howit is done
hey "darby" its not rocket science, you drunk
Don’t know why he was smiling, shabby looking furrows
Seems like a lot of messing around to plow some ground. No one I know wastes that much time turning under their fields.

Don't plow like that. He's just showing off. Just flip the sod over.

Get the dog out of the way.
Looks to me like hobby farmers they are jacking around to much

Dead furrow
Why do mould plows more popular than disc plows any advantage?
Inexperience. Wrong process
That is not the way to start plowing a field! I am 77 years old and have plowed more fields than you have ever seen!
that is correct way to start in a ploughing match he is not ploughing whole field am 79years old brought up on uk farm
