The “Bad Traveling” episode is one of the best writings I’ve seen in a very long time, to how simple yet complicated the villain was to how conniving the hero was and how he wasn’t held back by the typical moral standards they give every hero nowadays (the deceiving, the murders and betrayals he reached to save innocent people).

Epsiode two of this season is my favorite of the entire series. Not only is the captain a cunning and highly capable individual but he's the only person in the ship that knows what the right thing is and is willing to go through any hardship to do it.
All of the crew however voted to do the easy yet immoral thing, to sacrifice the people in the island, so the captain decided to go Solomon Kane on all of them and ends up successful in his mission.

Fun Fact: David Fincher, who executive produced this series, directed the "Bad Travelling" episode for this season. The animators, when sitting in on a meeting stated it was like a film school packed into one place, when Fincher started talking about various aspects for the short.

The Very Pulse of the Machine was my favorite from this season. The visuals, the poetry quotes, the music swells, the discussion of what the meaning of life (and death) is, etc was all really beautiful. After watching I immediately read the short story it was based on.

I was kinda disappointed with the visual style they have chosen for this episode. I think either a realistic CGI style or an hyper-stylized hand-drawn animation style would have been much more appropriate.
Considering the content, I found the "trippy" visuals way too boring and conventional. It was nice, but also a ton of wasted potential.

"Sulphur is... triboelectric..." It's been one of my favourite scifi short-stories for decades. Honestly I was a little disappointed in the visual scene where she saw the magnetospheres, but otherwise it was so well done and animated, I'll forgive it.

The characterization in “Bad Travelling” is really interesting to me. We start off thinking that Torrin is a villain and he kind of is but then we eventually realize that he’s the only 1/2 decent person on crew of callus, treacherous pirates that would happily condemn 1000’s of people on the island to certain death.

I actually managed to exchange a few messages with Emily Dean shortly after the season came out! She did confirm the short is indeed open to interpretation, but she also confirmed my personal assumption of that it is about grief and the process of dealing with and finally letting go of it (or at least she mentioned that was her goal too).
On the artstyle specifically, it has probably been mentioned here too that it is meant to evoke the art of Moebius/Jean Giraud, a French comic artist who, next to his own amazing body of work, worked as artist on movies such as Jodorowsky's Dune, The Fifth Element, Alien, Tron, Willow and more. He is probably one of the most iconic (comic) artists of the 20th century

Fincher’s short shown here was one of my overall favourites from all 3 seasons, the subtle dig at shell oil was *chef’s kiss*. First episode could have done with a slightly less heavy handed commentary, though I thoroughly agree with the points it was making, but I liked the nod to dr strange love with the elites survival bunker, and while I enjoyed the IO story (Martha K lives on, I liked that anagram) I think it would have been perfect if they never confirmed she survived and left it up to the viewer…but the visuals were gorgeous

LDR evolved out of a very protracted attempt by get another "Heavy Metal" movie made with contemporary animation means. After so many years of frustration trying to get it off the ground, I believe, Kevin Eastman, creator of Ninja Turtles and owner of Heavy Meal Magazine, pulled out but David Fincher remained and finally adapted the venture into this great anthology series.
