In this video I'm showing you the two different styles of VW fobs. They look very similar but the process is a bit different. For the newer style fobs, all you need to do is pop off the back portion and you have access to the battery quickly. For the older style, you will need a screwdriver to dry the two sections apart. Then you will pry the back half apart yet again. Hope this little video was helpful to you!
How to replace a Volkswagen key remote battery. These two fobs are similar looking but getting to the battery are very different. Hopefully this helped you change your dead or low battery in your VW key.

Excellent instructions: accurate and succinct. It took me less than two minutes to replace the battery (prying the old one out was a bit harder than I expected, or it would have been about one minute).

You are a life saver omg, I was told I’d have to get an entirely new key fob and quoted several hundred dollars to recut the key all because the buttons didn’t work anymore, $15 and a screw driver and now it’s good as new!!!

I haven't been able to lock my car cuz the battery in the fob died..and the key hole is broken to my door handle so the key literally just spins without locking the door or car.

Thank you so much ur a life saver. Some ppl even professional tow guys couple of them said to re-program my VW Jetta 2009 none of them said it was the remote battery since the battery had died on my remote since three months and i was manually locking and unlocking my car since had other commitments and did not want to spend more money on this and the boot worked sometimes and the remote worked sometimes.
I saw ur video and said lets give it a try with the replacing the remote battery cost $5 if it works good if it does't then i just loose $5 that's ok and guess wat the idea worked out.

I really appreciated this video. I went to Canadian Tire to buy a new battery and was hoping that they would put it in for me. Unfortunately, they had a costly complaint from someone and no longer will put the new battery in for you. After watching this video,I was able to change the battery without any problem! Good info, Thanks! Note my 2005 Passat uses the key that is taken apart in two steps. My key fob would lock the doors, but not unlock them. I figured the key fob needed reprograming, but a new battery fixed the problem.

Mine is slightly different, but still gave me an idea how to open. Unfortunately mine takes CR2025 batteries when I've already got some CR2032s in the house.
Just a reminder based on a couple of other comments here - you aren't locked out of your car if the battery goes. It still works as a manual key! 🔑😄🤦🏻♀️

Hint: With the newer one you probably won’t need any tools since I got my battery out quite easily with just pushing the battery in on the right side
