I've been at this for over 2 hours with my 2016 Golf GTI . I rather stupidly had'nt removed the sticker off the back of the Duracel battery ! Yours was the only video that mentioned this minor fact so many thanks for that ! All good and no re-sync needed . Thanks again .
Vince..you saved me. BOTH of my fobs would not work on my GTi. I couldn't get in ir start the car. I called the AA and they put brand new batteries in both fobs. But only one worked. They said I'd need to take the other one to the dealer to do a full reset. But I noticed the red light was working on the one that worked so I figured the battery was not working in the second fob even tho he put a new one in. I followed your instructions and cleaned and replaced the battery...and it worked and was synced. Saved me a trip to the dealer. Thanks.
Many thanks. I sold my 2015 golf to my girlfriend and couldn’t remember how to change the fob battery for her (I drive a 15 year old Toyota Tacoma which doesn’t have a fob). Made short work of this little job and even provided the correct battery size and explanation. Well done
Cheers, Vince. This guide was spot on. I didn't realise you had to peel off the safety sticker at first, so thanks for making that clear. A lot easier and less fiddly than I anticipated.
Just changed the battery on the key of VW Caddy no issues. I'd have still been looking at it and wondering how to get to the battery without this useful video. Many thanks.
Thank you, it worked! As many commenters indicated, my 2015 Polo also needed re-sync: after changing the battery it didn't work. I just opened the car manually, then removed the key from the door, pressed the open button on the fob, and from there on it worked.
Long time viewer and randomly searched RUclips for a solution and saw your video and it is amazing how more well explained you are compared to others on this subject. So glad you have been successful on RUclips because it is will deserved
Great video, my Golf R warning message kept telling me the keyfob battery was low. Watched your video and luckily had the correct battery cell to hand. Soon had it changed and working perfectly.
the knife tip really helped lol lots of videos of people opening it super fast and easy but when a tried it was "NO WAY this thing is opening"! Cheers, thanks for the video!
Many thanks for taking the time to share this video with us. My wife has a 2016 Polo and I followed your simple, quick and easy video guide and within a matter of seconds had changed the battery, with a minimum of fuss.
Thanks Vince, changed both mine today. Old batteries measured about 2.9V, one wasn't working, the other was working but the car kept telling me to change the battery. First key worked fine, the second didn't work at all, even the red light on the key didn't flash. I had the batteries in & out a few times and then discovered that if you press the open and close buttons together, it does some kind of reset and the key started working again. No resync needed even after all the messing.
I’ve changed my key battery many times over the years (using this video) without issue. However, on this occasion, it was still saying “Change Key Battery” when inserting the key, even when using the spare key. So I tried your suggestion and it has cleared the message, for both keys. Thanks!!!
The best video. I really was hesitant to change the battery and it alerted me 6months prior. It eventually died ahaa. Now it took me as long as it took you. How cool ! Thanks.
another site said that a CR2032 would also work. I just successfully used a CR2032 as a replacement in my 2014 Golf key. battery won't stay down while open, but replacing the cover does work and keeps the battery in
For Mk 7 golf, you may have to re-sync the key after battery replacement otherwise key won't lock and unlock remotely. In order to re-sync the key, press unlock button on the key fob and unlock the driver's door manually (by putting the key into the handle on the driver's door and turn it clockwise). that's all, key is re-synced and it will lock and unlock remotely
This is such a clear, plain English, and helpful video that's just saved me $AU340. Thanks so much, especially for the close video and clear, simple explanations.
Thank you so much! You saved me some money by not having to take it to my car salon where they always charged me far more then just the cost of the battery .
Once the battery is changed you may have to re-sync the key fob or it will not operate. Firstly, remember to remove the self adhesive strip from the battery. There is a hidden key entry to open the vehicle! The drivers side door handle will have a small slot under the handle cover. Look under the handle & you will see it. Insert your key into the slot & gently prise the cover off. This will now reveal the key entry. Insert your key into the lock & turn to unlock position. Remove the key & press unlock on the fob. The doors should now open. If the alarm sounds enter the vehicle, insert your key into the ignition & turn on. The alarm will stop & your key is re-synced. Whatever happened to simplicity!
Which side of the door handle: inside or outside the car? Does it have to be the car key that prizes off the cover underneath the door handle. And, is it the actual key ( the metal bit ) you use to prize open the door, not the fob. I am asking those questions based on your instructions. I am nowhere near a car so I am more or less asking blindly. Excellent video. Thanks.
@@suee-charles4186 Sue, look under the drivers door handle outside of the car. On the left you will see an aperture to put your car key into, gently prise off the plastic cover on the door handle without scratching paintwork. When removed you will see a key entry. Press unlock on your key fob & immediatly insert your key into the key entry, turning clockwise to unlock car. Open door, insert key into ignition & turn on. Push the plastic cover back onto the door handle. Job done!
Man I just changed the battery and of course it didn’t work. Thanks to you I removed the cover and followed your guide. And of course it didn’t work either. Just before my head was going to explode I remembered I didn’t remove the tape from underneath the battery. Now it works just flawless and I didn’t have to reprogram the key. ✌️✌️
I used this video to help me decide what battery to get while at the store without opening my key fob. Got home and yes it was the 2025 battery (I have a USA 2015 mk7 golf S). A 2032 may fit since they’re the same diameter and voltage, but it’s thicker so it might be a tight fit. You could try that if it’s all you had available otherwise buy the 2025 it calls for. I get about 3 yrs use from the battery until replacement .
2015 Polo with both keyfobs dead for 4+ weeks (first time in 9 years) - this video worked perfectly 👌. No need to re-sync - just standing next to the car pressing at first they didn't work and then after a couple of presses they both started working. Brilliant and no need for expensive Timpsons (£25 per keyfob!).
I'm so happy for two reasons: first, you give me a big aid with battery replacement of my key ( Octavia 2013), Second I' m trying to learn English and in this video, I understand all! You get clear accent!
this was the best explanation how to change the battery on my VW fob. Thanks for making this video, so simple when you can watch someone talk you though it.
Thanks, friend. My buddy's GTI key fob battery died tonight on the shittiest, snowiest storm of the year while his stupid ass was out on a date. When I showed up with a spare battery he didn't even know how to open his fob. So you saved the day.
Thanks for your clear guide to replace VW key fob battery. I followed it to the letter and your directions worked fine. However I did decide to use a thicker pry in the key gap and carefully levered open the cover. It did not mark or leave marks to the fob. I had my replacement CR2025 immediately available to a make fast replacement and had no sync issues. I’m assuming sync issues may be encountered if long duration is left when the battery is not immediately exchanged.
Hi Vince. I hope you get to read this comment on this old video. I have subscribed to your channel a while ago after I started watching you repair random stuff. Just want to say you are awesome for what you are doing. You don't push any "like", Sub" down the viewers mouth. You voice is nice and calm and you make watching the repairs worth while. I am commenting all the way from South Africa and I generally don't comment on YT, but if you ever down in Cape Town I hope you have a blast and find some fun stuff to repair here. Cheers Mate.
Very helpful. I changed the in-use key fob battery and the spare at the same time as they're going to last as long as you have the vehicle. I used a broad flat edge of a house key to flip the cover off and a dental spatula to flick out the old cell. My Energisers did have a safety wrap package but no non-conductive sticker; they've now got the safety image etched on the battery casing.
It's late 2022 and I just did this for my 2017 Golf Alltrack key fobs. Works perfectly, and no issues with re-synching. Thanks for a great little tutorial!
I changed the battery and the fob wasn't working. Thought I had to re-synch but turns out I hadn't removed the plastic sticker from the battery terminal... duh
excellent work. had to try and open this because my car randomly told me the key fob battery was low, but I opened it up and checked it - its 3v, its fine. the car is wrong. cheers

Great tutorial . I fitted a 2032 instead, but it kept popping out. I was able to close the casing over it and it works, however could this damage the key, using a battery that doesnt quite fit? Thanks!

I have a bunch of 2032s and was about to stop and order some 2025s when I read your comment. I used a 2032 and it seems to work fine. Thanks for the tip!
Nice vid, used it the first time I had to do the Sportwagon key...it goes through batteries way faster than expected. However, I got a deal on 2032's at an industrial store for some other things in the house and decided to see how bad the fit is. It goes in...won't sit flat on it's own but the lid presses it down with no resistance and it locked/unlocked the car from inside the house through the door into the garage. So 2032 is possible so far. That and it allegedly lasts longer with a bit more capacity...but we'll see about that.
Great video, thanks. One dealer's website says use 2032, they got lots of feedback telling them they're wrong, but they've left it up and I wound up buying the wrong battery.
Thank you.... wish I seen this before I bashed it against the floor. My method works but I can’t help but feel like your method won’t scratch the key fob.
Thanks for the useful information and clear instructions. Hopefully try my hand at this as the sign to replace key battery has recently come up on my dashboard. If all works, will save me £5‐10 service fee those shops charge. 🤙🏾
This video is really helpful! Others I watched showed larger holes the prize open the fob or had other different models. Thank you for this as it was the only one I could find for my VW fob make!
Thank you so much. Timpsons changed my car key battery last time it needed it, and charged me about £12 for the privilege. They certainly saw me coming 🙄. Cost me £1.99 to do it myself. 👍
Vince, thanks very much for making this excellent video available to us. It's surprising how much dust and fluff gets inside that casing isn't it? Peter
I read this somewhere but a video helps to tell how hard to crack open the cover. I used a blue ball pen to prey the battery out with little effort. It jumped a feet high before landing on my thigh. I guess putting a spare cr2025 in the car is a must for everyone. My key failed to work in the mall carpark. One quick shop of battery fixed it.
When 600 pages VW Manual fails you and well worth watching 2.50 minutes saves your day. Thanks man.
When your manual is in Japanese 😅

I ordered 2032 batteries by mistake. They're 32mm instead of 25mm but they work fine. It's fiddly to get them in because they're thicker but being an octopus helped.

Thanks for the useful information and clear instructions. Hopefully try my hand at this as the sign to replace key battery has recently come up on my dashboard. If all works, will save me £5‐10 service fee those shops charge. 🤙🏾
Very helpful. Just bought a mk7 golf not very long ago and the spare key fob was dead. Straight to the point and helpful
Simple, clear. What else could I ask for...? Nothing. Thanks!!!
Superb video. Clear and concise, many thanks. The re-sync instructions below are also helpful.
Thanks a bunch mate! Took me 2 minutes to replace the battery :D
We all watched this video because we all had this prob
Today is my day;thank u
This video is really helpful! Others I watched showed larger holes the prize open the fob or had other different models. Thank you for this as it was the only one I could find for my VW fob make!
Thank you man, that was quickly solved because of you and save me trip to the garage.
Thank you! You helped me get the 2017 version off in 2 seconds! 😊😊😊
Simple & effective clip, and no need to synchronise the fob. Thanks for uploading 👍🏾
Wicked instructions. Straight to the point.
Thank you! The other video I checked the last time actually told me to remove the back with my finger, it hurts me so bad…
I wish I found your video 2 years ago! At that time I couldn’t find the appropriate Keyfob and had to figure it out on my own. Took ages haha!
Thanks very much. Didn't want to go out into the cold to get the handbook so this did the trick just nicely!
Tack så mycket för kanon bra förklaring , bättre kan man inte hitta . Trots 71 år bakom mej det tog 2 minuter byta Battery ..
Tack så mycket :-)
Thank you! very well explained! No problem anymore to change my key battery!
Mate I was so confused with the dash sign but this video helped me out a lot.💪🏾
Thank you so much. Timpsons changed my car key battery last time it needed it, and charged me about £12 for the privilege. They certainly saw me coming 🙄. Cost me £1.99 to do it myself. 👍
Perfect. Thanks Vince. Didn't even break anything 😀
Thanks! I was worried about doing this because there's no obvious mechanism to take the cover off. I was afraid I'd bust it.
Just watched this video and replaced by battery key. So good.
same. thanks for the vid!
Kedves Vince!
Köszönöm a videót, nagyon hasznos volt számomra.
Üdv!
Thank you :-)
Thanks, works very nicely on a key from a Seat Leon 2016. In fact, it's precisely the same key :o)
Thank you Vince. Your instruction video was clear and concise and helped me immensely.
Thanks, for some reason i always thought coded keys needed dealer attention. Thumbs up!
