It is an essential plugin and should be built into OBS, in my opinion. The biggest thing is if you have apps playing to dedicated to audio devices, you would need to keep OBS open all the time to route the audio when you aren't streaming. That's the only thing that you'd still need Voicemeeter for. I'm thinking about what changes I want to make considering I have this functionality now.

Great informative video as always. I Will download this and see how it works for my music performance set up. Currently I’m using 2 audio cards to solve my ASIO issue. Voicemeter never worked properly for me, nothing but Audi glitches and crashes. Having the 2nd audio card has been a Godsend solution. This plugin may be another solution.

Though I find this plugin highly interesting, it will ~NOT~ kill Voicemeeter (VM in short). And there is a simple reason why. Still, everything would go through OBS. One might ask: Why is this a problem? Because while streaming, the delay of the Monitoring Output can rise continuously rise. I had issues before, when I tried to monitor the sound from OBS, the delay did rise while streaming until I reached a horrible delay of almost half a minute (!!) But lets say you don't run into those issues. Even then, this introduces quite a bit of delay to the sound. If on the other hand you use VM on an audio interface with a good ASIO connection, the delay added can be pretty much unnoticeable.
More possible issues with using OBS:
    1) You have only 4 Channels for Recording devices to be used globally. The first two global audio devices are playback devices, which MAYBE work, but depending on your use case, you might end up limiting yourself. You can of course add more channels to each scene, but you don't want to do that per scene. Its a mess to keep track of. I for myself currently use 8 (!) audio Channels within VM Potato. (Yep, all of them!)
    2) You get a more controllable monitoring output, but you don't get additional outputs, like you would with VM. In VM, you can have to 8 outputs at a time. While that might sound overkill at first, get this: I am currently using 5 Outputs . Two of them go to OBS, one with a Streaming mix, another one with a Recording Mix. Next, I have one output for Voice Chat. Usually, that one only transfers my microphone sound, but then again, I can mute said output, without muting. And trust me, you want this mute function at the same place as you have the muting for the stream or monitoring your microphone! And on top of those 3 Outputs, I have 2 separate Monitoring Outputs.
    3) You need to keep OBS running pretty much all the time, so you can hear the channels available in there. But since you do not stream 24:7, this can be annoying to say the least, especially if you run a single PC streaming setup. Maybe you want to play games of stream, your PC cannot stream at the same time, because its not powerful enough.
    4) Using a DAW Controller to get hardware controls over your multichannel set up. Try to add a DAW Controller to OBS. Just try it. It's a pain. 2 Plugins are needed just to do that and even if it works, I wonder if it works with the Audio Monitor Plugin without issues. No matter, if it does: You end up with a mess of plugins and each of them needs to be occasionally updated, to keep working with the newest Version of OBS Studio. VM on the other hand keeps getting updated and doesn't meddle with OBS Studio at all. And pretty much any DAW Controller can be connected to VM and configured to your personal needs. Granted, setting up a DAW Controller - though straight forward enough - is a lot of work, but it would be the same no matter where you want to set it up (not counting professional DAW Software, where it MIGHT be easier.)
All of that being said, I will definitely stick with Voicemeeter Potato.

Your writeup was super helpful, thank you. I was just about to learn VM before I stumbled on this video and I wasn't certain which direction to go; I'll be sticking with Voicemeeter!

I personally don't think VoiceMeeter will become irrelevant after this, I use it a lot outside of OBS and the way patching works is way more familiar to me as an audio engineer. Still cool to see must-have features being developed as plugins, if I didn't use VoiceMeeter for other things then I'd hate to have to install it for OBS.

I think it's a hidden gem. I didn't know how much I needed it, until I installed it. Takes solid hour of playing around to learn the basics, but after one makes a mental map of how things interconnect, it becomes very intuitive.

Outside of streaming, the main thing I use VB-Cable for is routing audio to Teams/Zoom/WebEx meetings. I set the advanced audio properties of OBS to monitor my microphone and set the monitor device to VB-Cable Input. In the meetings apps I set the mic to VB-Cable output. Why do all of this? For the audio filters (gate, compressor, expander mostly).

    • @RustyBrakes
      @RustyBrakes 3 года назад

I guess you have to give up any real-time monitoring of your mic for this? That's the trade-off I'm not quite ready to make so far, perhaps open-backed headphones would be a nice middle ground

Ooooh, this is neat, even if just for the utility of per-source monitoring devices or previewing each local recording track.
Like voicemeeter I think this will be great for people who truly have those niche applications that Voicemeeter demands, but like you said, most people don't need VM. It frustrates me that nine times out of ten I see people asking 'how can I isolate my game audio' and replies just immediately jump to voicemeeter when that's just adding more complications and points of potential failure when all you really need is the singular, free VB Cable (if that, like how you use your screen to more or less have a virtual cable built in to your setup, or RTX Voice / Nvidia broadcast can act the same way).

Hell yeah. Am audio engineer, and none of these janky solutions were giving me the level of control and intuitiveness I wanted. Being able to independently route all audio sources through a fully fledged DAW, through as many Windows audio devices as you want, with the only hardware needed being a decent ASIO interface, was a total game changer. Despite setup being far from hassle free, it's largely set-and-forget as soon as you're happy with the configuration.

I was super excited after seeing this because I've been using Voicemeeter for awhile now to do a lot of things, and it's limited/ convoluted. I got the plug-in to work for a lot of things with little fuss. However, having audio drivers run on Windows, OBS, Voicemeeter, and GoXLR caused my Realtech audio drivers to somehow get damaged. I reinstalled them, which changed somethings, but for now the signals from my physical line in and mic in cables are getting mixed. In my sound control panel I see both mic in and line in as "ready" inputs, but only one of them has monitoring bars. When I rebooted, the monitoring bar switched from the line-in to the mic-in. I've tried a few things so far to get everything working again, but not having changed my hardware, I can't use Voicemeeter to accomplish what I was previously accomplishing after installing this plug-in and messing with it. If I figure out why that happened, and how to work around it, I'll write back. Might anyone have any ideas on how that happened and how to fix it?

I have to change my Windows playback device setting to my headset in order for all of those other audio sources to play to my headset; if desktop speakers are enabled, the audio source will play to both my desktop speakers *and* my headset. what am I doing wrong?

I kinda did some of this using Elgato's Sound Capture utility and a Windows Store app called EarTrumpet. By default on my system, my primary output device is "Elgato Sound Capture" and goes to EVERY device. I can then use EarTrumpet to adjust/mute apps on the different devices. Then OBS is set to capture one or several of those devices. Has worked pretty well in my use and works ALL the time outside of OBS.

This might replace VM for me even for non-stream purposes! I use VM a lot to separate the audio channels on my XLR ADC, apply separate volumes and filters, and then feed one back to me, and rejoin both into the output.
It allows me to use my phone as a soundboard in games, by plugging the 3.5 from it into the secondary microphone port on my ADC, while also setting a noise gate and filter on my actual microphone. It works great in VR as well, as I can use Teamviewer on my phone to stream it to PC, and have it in my hand to actually use and hear, and I can turn whether other people hear it (usually in social VR platforms) on and off.
Being able to use OBS'es filters for this purpose could greatly expand what I can do with this type of audio routing/rerouting setup.

If you use virtual cable, to rout the audio. When you closes OBS you only have the audio in the headset.
I have set my spotify to play through Virtual Cable (A) and then rout it to my headset with the OBS plugin. But then i closes my OBS the music is just gone.

If I am understanding this plugin correctly, it doesn't let me give different programs different channels in the mixer so I can control them separately. In that case this cannot replace VoiceMeeter. Granted, I can't get VM to do that right either.

I've been struggling a bit with configuring my audio when using OBS. I tried VoiceMeeter and it's even more complicated. Audio Monitor seems a bit easier to use. But the actual problem that I seek an answer to is, how to set for constant audio when I am switching among multiples cameras and graphics? I am using a Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 as my main source of audio coming in from a house mix. Thank you in advance to whoever can point me on the right path...

I just love the idea of only need OBS for my MS Teams meetings. I have used OBS for quite some time now, and always need VoiceMeeters for sharing my desktop sound (whithout sharing a screen/window). With this plugin and turtorial I can SEND, but whatabout receiving the sound from the other participants in the meeting? Since "they" come in via desktop sound, as soon as I share my desktopsound using for example a soundboard, they (the participants) will here them self. How do I avoid/solve that?

Can you show how to get Discord on a different track than my other desktop sounds?

    • @WereCatStudio
      @WereCatStudio 3 года назад +1

      Discord input: My mic
      Discord output: VB-Audio CABLE Input
OBS 1st Audio device: VB-Audio CABLE Input - (for Discord)
OBS 2nd Audio device: Realterk Digital Output - (for PC audio)
      OBS input: My mic
Then in the OBS Audio Mixer I've set my SMSL M6 (headphones) output as a listening device for both audio devices via the plugin in the Filters menu.
In windows the Realtek must be set as a default audio device in this particular configuration otherwise the game will use whatever else is the default. (Realtek because that's what I set in OBS as a PC/Game audio).
Only disadvantage to this thus far is that I have to either have OBS turned on to hear sounds from the PC or I need to manually change the audio device in Windows to my SMSL M6 if I don't want to have OBS opened.
If you don't have your motherboards audio free and you are not using a different sound card then this will not work for you unless you get the paid version of the VB-Cable to get one extra VB-Audio CABLE Input.
I don't know if this is a great solution, maybe there is a lot better way to do it. It works for me though.

Depends on what drivers you use. If it is ks asio. and you don't run it though a vst host with heavy processing. And lowered the buffer on the virtual cable of you're voice.
If its just wdm or mme. Try the last option and see how low the buffer will go before you start to sound like a robot.

I am a clarinet lesson teacher who has been saved by OBS and VoiceMeeter for the past year, due to being able to have 2 separate mic channels for my audio input (Dynamic mic for my voice [1+1] and my dual condenser clarinet mic for my instrument [2+2]. With this OBS plugin, would I be able to do the same thing here and separate my Mic 1 & Mic 2 inputs or would OBS still recognize it as one input regardless?
