I agree with him saying learn to polish. I don’t like hearing loud overly distorted chat. Sometimes people just plug mics in and don’t set it to sound better. If you pay for something make the most of it. I’m all about learning lol
EposVox: you clearly go above and beyond with the effort you put into these videos. You cover SO many bases in under 20 minutes, and it doesn't even feel like a sponsored video. Also it had me realize my audio chain on my microphone was not in the correct order in OBS, so thank you!
EQ is magic, you managed to make the mic sound like your dynamic mics. For my voice, and room I do more cutting then adding. Lots or resonating frequencies and it usually only likes like 2-5db. A lot does go a long way after you compress and bring it back up again.
As far as speaking clearly, I find that I speak more clearly if I'm streaming to an audience that is actually watching me, but if I'm recording, I tend to mumble. The way I was able to overcome this was by imagining that I'm NOT recording a video but rather TELLING a friend about the game and what's going on in it - when I play with friends, my voice is more excited and more clear, so if you have a decent enough imagination that you can imagine yourself speaking to your friends on Discord about this game rather than just recording your own voice, then you will sound the way you do when you speak with your friends. It might not be a professional speaker style voice, but it will be a large step above mumbling.
As an audio guy, what a fantastic video. Incredibly well put together! And thank you for explaining things correctly, haha! Especially compressors. Thank you!
"The Purple Professor" has done it again. You are my go to guy to fuel my technology pathology 😁👍. It's awesome that you not only keep us up to date with the greatest and latest, but you also back it up with full on, in depth tutorials and tips. Great work!
You’re probably the first person I’ve seen described sound reflections accurately. Most people think the foam is to spare their neighbors from streaming and gaming. But it does nearly nothing to stop transmission. You need a material like shredded rubber or neoprene.
Really underrated. I've been doing so many, spending hours doing stuff I don't need (Basically, Doesn't make my audio good.) and this video thought me a lot! Thanks.
Edit: you mentioned it in your video!!! Nice. The good thing is that somehow the suit RTX Voice doesn't need an RTX card to work. I have a GTX1660Ti and it still works just fine. There is one amazing way to remove any noises from your mouse and keyboard from your audio recordings and live streams. If you got a 1000 series and upwards NVidia card by any chance you can make use of RTX Voice which uses AI to filter out the noise. It removes basically 95 to 99% of the click sounds or any other noise. And I use a really obnoxious keyboard. It is almost like magic!
Great video! My biggest thing with my Wave 3 mic is that applying any plugins via OBS means treating the mic as a separate source in OBS instead of letting everything run through wave link. I really hope Elgato adds plugin support to wave link so that we can starting EQ-ing our mics directly instead of in specific apps.
Great Advice, & presentation! As always… I’m very excited that with such a small channel, minimal effort, & only 12 videos spread out over a year.. Deity has agreed to send me a mic for review, I’m sure I’ll laugh at whatever I create, when looking back later down the road, but I know with Adam’s tutorials, trial & errors… I’ll eventually improve! Thx for this super helpful info 🥳
This is amazing!! I've been doing a lot of reading and experimenting with my Wave 3, but this video really helped pull all of my knowledge together and made me a lot more comfortable, especially on the EQ stuff.
Also yes to the in depth eq content lol. Also for those of us who wish to keep that eq and compression for better discord chat/podcast, is there an option do that eq stuff and compression on the desktop side outside of obs while having a usb mic other than elgato?
I personally use Cantabile Lite which does the job very well, there are other options but I personally find it to be the easiest when paired with Voicemeeter. Also, Voicemeeters own tools for VSTs... definitely need a little work.
another equalizer APO(+vb audio cables) user here, I don't use the mic often but I do run copies of channels for multichannel audio purposes.. I am curious if we could emulate the clipguard feature by recording lower then have another copy running with usual gain on a separate channel.. getting EAPO to swap channels based on content however sounds sticky.
@@dozerjohn Voicemeeter is usually hopeless with consumer soundcards. It more or less requires a hardware USB interface such as GoXLR to work without crashing or hanging things. Although not all interfaces work as well either. I suggest Steinberg UR12 or UR22 which have both been completely flawless at 32 sample ASIO for me. $150 bucks or so pre-owned.
Would love to see a hardware guide for going from a basic gamer headset like a Logitech G935 to a full blown streamer audio setup. What does that initial purchase look like? What's my shopping list? Do I need anything special for a 2 PC setup? Preamp? Converter? GoXLR? Nani?
I actually just bought a microphone arm for my Fifine microphone and boy, is it an improvement, just going to get closer to my face greatly improved my sound quality. And the best part was the mic arm I bought was $10
I didn't know they added RTX Voice to OBS. I need to try that. I used to have major issues with the RTX Voice app stealing focus and making my games run awfully.
ive never seen someone with such aesthetic pleasing visuals, knowledgeable about everything, and super entertaining/ easy to watch before. You're like harris heller, but easier to watch if that makes sense.
One suggestion about the keyboard part, you can literally buy keyboard with silent switches like your typical MX Silent Red, or swap in silent switches for your custom keyboard afficionado out there. It will reduce the sound level of your keyboard to almost rubber dome keyboard level due to those having rubber dampeners at places where the stem (or pole) contact with the housing, producing sounds.
Thank you very much for making things so clear and concise. It can be difficult to find more in-depth information, as well as keeping it easier to understand for people that are new to content creation. I greatly appreciate what you're doing with your channel. Keep up all the good work and I will be returning to learn more in the future haha. 🤘
This video is great and it covers all the main aspects quickly. Videos deep diving into the individual subjects like EQ, Noise Gate, compressors etc would be great. Then those could all be linked as cards in the appropriate places within this one.
response to the deep dive into EQ - it's certainly something I'd find useful. I watch your vids mainly for the tech as much as anything, but getting to know EQ better would be useful to me on a personal level, as I've never quite understood the nitty-gritty of the PEQ settings and how they affect the sound of something, and at church I often have only a few seconds before a service to get an EQ on a speech mic right as the band are busy practicing most of the time so I'm setting them up most of the time.
I'm one of those who make their sentences sound like a question when reading off a script. Always thought it's because the language I use on my channel isn't my native one -- never heard of vocal fry/vocal pulling -- so I really appreciate you giving me something new to try and see if it improves. Thanks!
If you're willing to shell out for it for a quieter keyboard, a Glorious keyboard(or similarly cheaper options) with hot swap capability and another $100 or so for switches, then zilent v2, Healios, Sakurios, or Roselios switches from ZealPC all have dampeners built into the switch stems to prevent the bottom out thock. Plus if you like the tactility of clicky switches, Zilents are tactile switches with a bump you can actually feel....looking at you "tactile" that feels like nothing MX browns.

I did a few tests with my mic (Samson Q2U), connected via USB, and found that the best results were with both foam cover and pop filter. Perhaps it's just a specific combination of this particular mic and my voice. Though, I do readily admit, I shouldn't need both! I just watched this so that I can work better on my code that utilizes Speech-to-text API. Wanted to use my $10 lavelier mic, got to learn a lot from the Stream professor, thanks!
Nearly PERFECT video. Missing one very important thing though when doing sound EQ or compression. Take frequent breaks and listen to unrelated things to Reset Your Ears. Your ears can quickly start to tune out bad sounds after you've heard them multiple times, making you unaware that the EQ you're applying or that audio clip that you've listened to for the 4th time, got worse with the changes you tried to apply to it.
An awesome video as per usual, Adam! 😆👍👍 As ever, I appreciate you for taking the time to create this content as well as highlight the various ways that audio can be improved through a mixture of dedication, learning and time. ☺👌 I'll openly admit that I genuinely laughed out loud when you took the headphones off with a look of pure horror on your face as if to say sweet jeebus what in the holy Hell did I just hear?! 😂🎧🎤 Cheers to you, my man! 🍻
I love everything about this video. Been trying to get this crappy Blue Yeti microphone I've had for a couple years to sound good, and not going to be able to get anything better for a while. Figure it's possible somehow (Rich from Digital Foundry sounds decent enough on his..) but I'm not fluent in audio engineer stuff and what the different filters do. This gives me a huge jump-off on things to try. Thanks, Stream Sensei!
Great video, and very helpful advice that I just needed! But as a linguist, I need to make a comment 11:16. You seem to mix vocal fry up with high rising terminals/uptalk, but that doesn't really matter. For both that and vocal fry in the sense of e.g. creaky voice, saying that "it sounds really annoying" seems to promote the stigmatization of these features of speech. It's perfectly helpful to make people aware of the features and the perceptions of it that exist, but that's not best conveyed by being the stigmatizer. And it's the opposite of saying to people that their normal conversation voice is just fine
Adobe Audition, not relevant for realtime/stream audio, but it's good for a video like this because you can play back a recording and showcase the effects
DERP the first song is not by PYLOT, it's still Backing Track. backingtrack.gg/
The first three tips were really useful, but I think telling people to learn Polish is a little excessive.

I was thinking the same. :D
I agree with him saying learn to polish. I don’t like hearing loud overly distorted chat. Sometimes people just plug mics in and don’t set it to sound better. If you pay for something make the most of it. I’m all about learning lol
