I must agree--this scene between Mama and Jim Bob was so tender, especially with the rest of the family overlooking them. It brought me to tears, too. I only wish that we could have seen the other children's' reactions as they are told the secret. But knowing the rest of the family as we do, we can about guess each character's reaction. it's just nice to see it played out. Judy, what do you suppose Mary Ellen would have said to Mama, Jim Bob or even Daddy about the secret?
The dialogue between John Sr and Jim Bob, when it was stated that Olivia was grateful that Jim Bob survived, and that she truly cherished him for that reason, was quite touching
that episode made no sense when John told Jim Bob that's why your momma has a special bond with you or something like that it's been a long time since I saw it but she didn't have a special bond with him in she hardly around Jim Bob. And why did they wait till season 4 to say he had a twin
I always liked the scenes between Jim Bob and John Boy, like this episode where they go and find out about Jim Bob’s birth, and the episode where Jim Bob runs away
You wanna know what I remember most about the episode where Jim-Bob runs away? It's John-Boy chasing him around the city, and, when Jim-Bob tries to join the Army Air Corps and the recruiter wants his name in reverse order, so he says, "Walton Bob-Jim!" Soooo cute, soooo funny.
The kitchen scene with Mrs. Brimmer and Jim Bob was memorable for me. It really shows how integral her character is to the community. And I loved how she offered him the cookies to make him feel at home when something is clearly the matter with him.
That was exemplified in the last season episode The Pursuit, when Jim Bob sits down to talk to Mary Ellen, after Kathy Seals said she was pregnant, by Jim Bob (and would lead Mary Ellen to realize that Kathy was NOT pregnant)
I was so happy to see another video! This particular episode always resonated with my family. My Grandmother had 4 sets of twins and my Fathers twin was the only one who did not survive. They were born at home in 1942 and Dads twin was still born. Dad weighed only 1 lb 1 oz and survived. My Great Grandmother wrapped him in cotton wool and put him in a roasting pan in the warming oven in her giant wood stove to keep him warm. She fed him with an eye dropper. Dad lived in his warm , roasting pan for the first 6 months of his life and people would come by from all over just to look at the impossibly tiny baby asleep in his pan lol. Today, Dad remains one of the tallest, strongest men in his family . Edit to add- the warming oven was NOT the regular oven haha- i feel i should clear that up. It was a smaller cupboard on the top of the stove by the chimney were food would have been put to keep warm after it was finished . There was no fire in the warming oven!
@@purplej1436 hahahaha my Great Grandad had a running joke. He would get home from work and call out - what's for supper! And Gran would open the door of the warming oven and say - the baby!
Thank you, Judy, for talking about The Secret. This is one of my favorite episodes. I noticed that you became a little teary-eyed when speaking about Jim Bob's discovery, and the scene between Jim Bob and Olivia, when they share that special moment at the end. I always shed a few tears too, simply because that was such a loving, brilliantly acted scene.
This is one of my favorite episodes. I love the emotional scene at the end between JimBob and Olivia. Some of my favorite episodes are those that feature JimBob. He was such an interesting character, and David Harper did a good job of portraying him. Oh, and Judy, you and I have something in common. My dad had blue eyes, my mom had green eyes, my brother and sister have blue eyes, but I have brown eyes. My maternal grandmother had brown eyes too.
David was such a wonderful actor. He stood out in this episode. Wonderful show that covered so many topics. Loss of a child is just one of the many stories done so wonderfully by the writer’s and acted so perfectly by this amazing cast. Thanks Judy for your insight on this episode. 💕
A couple years earlier Danny Partridge thought he was adopted and it was used to introduce the huge Partridge Family song, 'Doesn't Somebody Want To Be Wanted'. Ironically, all of these TV shows prompted me to question if I was adopted when I was a child.
That was a really good episode. Loved the interaction between John Boy and Jim Bob,and of course when Jim Bob hugged Olivia, John said exactly the right words also so JimBob could totally understand so many things now!
Jim Bob often reminds me of my younger son. I always cry at the end of this episode. It is one of my favorites. My husband and I always laugh when Jim Bob says "I guess I wasn't thinking."
Another wonderful reminiscence! I really do think David was under appreciated for his acting, you can really feel his pain in this episode. Nora Marlowe did a wonderful job as Mrs. Brimmer, too. I'm glad they honored her work by not recasting after she passed.
Judy (alias Mary Ellen) ... thank you as always for giving us a look inside the world of the Walton's. The Walton's was a gift and we need the love and value it teaches more than ever today. Thanks again for all you are doing to keep it alive ... and nice fireplace too.
This is one of my (many) favorite episodes. David Harper always does an excellent job of portraying Jim Bob in the poignant scenes when much emotion is needed with little dialogue.
I remember that episode. I don't know what it was about David Harper's interpretation of Jim bob, but I loved that character. David was a natural in front of the camera. His presence was so genuine and honest. The type of honesty that makes me want to cry, because it is so pure. I loved any episode that featured him and Mary Ellen. You two and grandpa were my favorite characters. There are times when I am stressed, that I just want to throw on my dungarees and mud boots and go fishing with grandpa, at Drucilla's Pond. The Walton's legacy will always be one of fairness and acceptability. I disagree with people that said it was too sugary. The show dealt with some very serious issues and it was always beautifully written. You and the rest of the cast and crew, writers, directors and of course Earl Hamner Jr., all helped to produce magic. By the way, Judy, you look particularly beautiful.
It always amazes me how the great actors/actresses can show emotion in their eyes and facial expressions to the point where dialogue would destroy the moment. It was fun watching each one grow their character over the years. Great writers ..
This episode is one of my favorite ! Its such a touching episode! How many of us wondered about our identity . My mom was adopted and didn't really know her true identity. It a little different then Jim- Bob . The last scene is so touching to see Jim- Bob hug Olivia. No words were said between them and nothing needed to be said . It makes me tear up not because it makes me sad but that moment is timeless ! Thank you Judy for sharing your thoughts.
There was such sweetness and sensitivity in Harper's portrayal of Jim Bob. He reminds me of certain people I knew living in Los Angeles from 1984-90. Mellow, good-natured, beach boy types. Very laid-back. People who may not have said much, but whom you knew had a lot going on beyond the quiet facade.
Watching this episode I really felt for Jim-Bob as he felt the guilt he carried for him living whilst his twin died. David Harper is so earnest in this and I was in tears when he questioned who he was & where he fitted in. Excellent performance & surperb writing on a relevant subject. ❤❤❤
This episode stands out in my memory because I was questioning my origin around the same time. A couple of years later we found my long lost maternal grandpa. When he got off of the bus, it was like we were looking in the mirror at one another 50 years apart.
I remember when I flew up to the funeral of my paternal grandmother. My parents and Uncle Phillip drove up, from LA to Seattle, two days before. My uncle Ed met me and my sister at the Seattle Airport, as Mom and Uncle Phillip were in route, having stayed in central Oregon on Monday, due to poor weather conditions (it was early February). At Uncle Ed’s house I noticed a painting in the dining room, and Mom, as she came in the house commented on the painting, of my grandfather, which she and Dad saw when they came up to my aunt’s funeral, the summer before (Mom and Dad might have offered to bring it home with them). I then had to confess that I thought it was a painting of Uncle Phillip. That got Mom to note, once again, how much Uncle Phillip had come to look exactly like his father.
This was probably one of the most precious series on The waltons I truly loved this one Jim Bob struggled and he did a great job at portraying that part loved the part where he and Olivia hug. Thank you Judy another really great one!!!!
Yes, this was an excellent episode - a little different, but David Harper's very natural acting style was wonderful and the culmination of him and Olivia at the end makes it worth watching the whole episode! Glad you did a video on this one.
This episode was indeed one of David Harper best scenes!! I know the 1st time I watched this, & the scene where Jim-Bob & John-Boy were looking up the birth records & discovered the truth, it sent a chill down the spine! & of course John explaining what had happen to John-Boy & then to Jim-Bob was also great. As afew other fans have said, Never saw it coming.
Even if I wasn't a David Harper fan. I would have to give him props for his acting ability. And especially in this episode. You feel all the emotions and I think everyone cries at the end. It was so sweet.
The show was so perfect as it was , but Jim Bob was beyond perfect for the role as he was really what you would have ran into as a young man in Virginia at that time . I saw you on Password today , beautiful .
It is wonderful to think of all the "life lessons" that the Waltons taught us. The show has a special place in my heart, because my mothers maiden name was Walton. My grandfather taught me many good life lessons. I miss him everyday. Thanks for the great video.
I think that every child questions their origins at some point in their formative years. This was a very moving episode esp the hug between Olivia and Jim Bob at the end. Thanks again for all the interesting background information Judy.🤔😢
I felt the emotion when Jim Bob and Olivia had that hug at the end of this episode!!! It was played with so much feeling! It can right through the TV🥲🥲 Thank you for sharing this episode!
One of those storylines that truly touches your heart. :) David Harper was so sweet in his scenes with Michael. My mum passed away when I was a teenager, so that hug between them near the end is comforting, somehow. I feel that Jim Bob's quiet way meant it was always a treasure when his sensitive nature showed. I loved how he was initially the only one to speak up for Martha Corinne, as well.
Thanks Judy, another great episode of The Waltons. I was really touched by the hug between Jim Bob and Olivia. The term dead line dates back to the Civil War and the POW camps of the South. Nora Marlowe was a great actress who appeared in many Western like Gunsmoke, I believe she was the first actor to pass away from the Waltons on 12/31/77. Her character was greatly missed, I remember when Curt told her she was fat. Her best part was in the episode about the book burning. One question I keep forgetting to ask you is, what television show is your favorite other then of course The Waltons. Take care, stay safe and GOD BLESS.
@Michael Kemp It's funny how sometimes an actor will say a memorable line in such a way as we "hear" it, for example, when the number on the scale is too high for me I 'hear' "Mrs. Brimmer, you are fat!" ☺️
Beautifully written and beautifully acted. That’s such a sensitive subject and it was handled with such careful thought. The ending was so special ❤️ and could not have been any better. You do this with such ease and grace, Judy. It’s like hanging out with a friend. 🙂
Oh boy!...another new back ground...I love your brown eyes by the way....my wife has beautiful brown eyes...I thought this episode about James Robert was great and it showed real life dynamics about sensitive issues within a family....I think I was 15 years old when I learned my mother had lost a child at birth....I imagine this strikes home for many of us...thank you Judy for sharing this...
This episode was a surprise to me, and very touching! Especially at the end when Jim bob hugged the un suspecting Olivia with no expectation on her part.
I have seen this episode so many times and still, every single time, I cry when Jim Bob goes straight to Olivia and just hugs her. Such a sweet and beautiful moment.❤ Gets me every time.
This episode no matter how many times I watch it always brings tears to my eyes. The Love that is shared between Olivia and Jim Bob is profound it is amazing how each of you can bring so much feelings in one small scene that continue to touch us years later. I'm always so happy after each episode you share Judy. ☺️
This is by far my favorite episode so well written and you fill Jim Bobs pain and the look on Olivia while in bed is so painful that I always feel her pain. This episode gives So many characters extra layers that makes them so much more real. Thanks again Judy well done as always look forward to that notification bell when you drop another video
Thanks for this upload, what I always thought was missing from the episode was some real dialogue between "Olivia" and "Jim Bob." The hug at the end was "nice," but there was too much missing. also, a gravesite for the "twin" would have been appropriate.
Thanks for another great episode of BTS with The Walton's! It's always nice when another sibling is showcased; in this story, Jim Bob is the main concern. I loved your treehouse! I watched Mother's Day on Walton's Mountain this weekend! The writers tackled some difficult issues! You all - writers and actors - did a great job holding the family together despite so many losses (Zebulon and Esther, John Boy). Have a wonderful day, Judy and Walton's everywhere! 📝📚📽️🌳🏠❤️
I also think it's a great example that they continued to have a great story line for all the kids throughout the series. Sometimes kids "disappear" (family matters) or are seen more than heard. Waltons was so great and keeping everyone involved somehow.
This episode resonated with me for different reasons. Two of them were that I found out something by accident about my birth when young, and I LOVED Yo-Yos as a kid. Keep'em coming Judy! I look forward to you sharing more insights on episodes. Thank you!
Such a beautiful and thought provoking segment, Ms. Judy. The contemporary fireplace at least to me, helped to provide your eloquently articulated narrative, with so much warmth and sensitivity!! It was refreshing to see Jim Bob with a more prominent insightful story line, for a change. He so often appeared to be the unassuming introverted Walton, that this was episode was the perfect story that helped to enable us to see him as a more thoughtful, reflective individual.
The Secret has always been a personal favorite! It showcases beautiful work from the actors... and everyone else involved in the show...it truly takes a village to create amazing episodes! Thank you!
This is such a beautiful episode and I love how John-Boy tells Jim Bob that he always thought they looked alike. That one sentence always stood out for me! Thanks for sharing!
Deeply moving episode. I always loved the episodes focused on Jim Bob and this might be my favorite one of those. What a surprise to find out he was a twin! That hug at the end had me crying. Thanks for this Behind the Scenes I really appreciate these videos and the interesting and lovely backdrops you choose.
I was surprised by how good this episode was when looking back on it again. There was a lot going on and beautifully acted by all. Thanks Judy for another insightful video.
I absolutely love how this episode ends. I love how it just ends with a tender moment between Jim Bob and Mama as he hugs Mama before dinner. I always thought it was really interesting how it left off right there, sort of leaving it up to our interpretations as to what happens afterward. (Like if Jim Bob told Mama that he knew about his twin or if they never discussed it again after that.)
What I found interesting about this episode; especially in light of later knowledge that Mr. Hammer did have twin brothers that he decided to make into one when he was writing, was the fact they had to practically turn around around and make Jimbob into twins where he was the survivor! Interesting.
Always dreamt about a treehouse. I'm sure many have wondered about the same issue I can't help get emotional over this. But enjoyed I find this fascinating. Well done. Thank you.
That was a really sweet story with so much emotion,my Mom was adopted so brought back lots of thoughts and emotions for her while we were watching it. 💕
Hi Judy Yes indeed this was interesting episode very well I enjoy all of your videos you show and tell the real storys of each episode " Thank You so much !!!
I cried at the end when JimBob came in and hugged his mama.

Me too, even watching it on the screen as Mary Ellen is talking made me tear up.

Yes it was.
You can see the pain in Olivia's eyes as she remembers that time in her life.
Yes, she did a wonderful acting job on it.
There was a lot of top notch acting in these episodes. Including the 'young' ones! ❤️
Having Jim Bob discover that he was a twin was a great twist for the episode. I sure didn't see that coming!
I agree, they make you think he's going to find out he's adopted, then reveal the twin that didn't make it.
Nor did I!

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing all your comments.
Beautifully written and beautifully acted. That’s such a sensitive subject and it was handled with such careful thought. The ending was so special ❤️ and could not have been any better.
You do this with such ease and grace, Judy. It’s like hanging out with a friend. 🙂
Thank you so much!
@@judynorton2598 absolutely Judy it really is like visiting with a friend
Oh boy!...another new back ground...I love your brown eyes by the way....my wife has beautiful brown eyes...I thought this episode about James Robert was great and it showed real life dynamics about sensitive issues within a family....I think I was 15 years old when I learned my mother had lost a child at birth....I imagine this strikes home for many of us...thank you Judy for sharing this...
Thanks.
This episode was a surprise to me, and very touching! Especially at the end when Jim bob hugged the un suspecting Olivia with no expectation on her part.
I love that moment.
I have seen this episode so many times and still, every single time, I cry when Jim Bob goes straight to Olivia and just hugs her. Such a sweet and beautiful moment.❤ Gets me every time.
Such a beautiful moment between the two of them.
This episode no matter how many times I watch it always brings tears to my eyes. The Love that is shared between Olivia and Jim Bob is profound it is amazing how each of you can bring so much feelings in one small scene that continue to touch us years later. I'm always so happy after each episode you share Judy. ☺️
Thank you so much!
Judy, it was a wonderful episode. Thank you evermore for sharing the details with us. ❤️
You are so welcome!
Thank you for covering this episode. It is one of my favorites.
My pleasure!
You're so welcome.
My favorite episode of all.
Cool.
God bless you Judy. These make me feel so lucky to have been able to watch.
Ahh, that's sweet.
Thank you Judy for doing this video. The Secret is one of my favorite episodes of the Waltons.
You're welcome.
Thanks for this upload, what I always thought was missing from the episode was some real dialogue between "Olivia" and "Jim Bob." The hug at the end was "nice," but there was too much missing. also, a gravesite for the "twin" would have been appropriate.
I understand- most enjoyed the emotion without much talking.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just saw this one the other night. I was heartfelt when he embraced his mom with happiness and sorrow for his twin.
Yes, it was very touching.
I also think it's a great example that they continued to have a great story line for all the kids throughout the series. Sometimes kids "disappear" (family matters) or are seen more than heard. Waltons was so great and keeping everyone involved somehow.
Absolutely. I was so grateful for that. Not fun to be merely window dressing..
This episode resonated with me for different reasons. Two of them were that I found out something by accident about my birth when young, and I LOVED Yo-Yos as a kid. Keep'em coming Judy! I look forward to you sharing more insights on episodes. Thank you!
You're very welcome.
Yes, it was perfect for David to show his acting skills.
The Secret has always been a personal favorite! It showcases beautiful work from the actors... and everyone else involved in the show...it truly takes a village to create amazing episodes! Thank you!
You're so welcome.
This is such a beautiful episode and I love how John-Boy tells Jim Bob that he always thought they looked alike. That one sentence always stood out for me! Thanks for sharing!
I totally agree- it was a great line.
The thing I loved most about the treehouse was the peacock who lived up there...."Rover".
Cool.
Sensibly and sensitively told. Thank you for this behind the scenes look.
You're so welcome.
A very emotional episode, especially when Jim Bob hugs his mum at the end.
Yes it was.
You're so welcome.
My most favorite episode, I felt the acting was extraordinary
Yes it was.
this was well done, I liked the end were Jim-Bob hugs his momma thanking her that he lived instead of his twin
Yes, it was well written and acted.
Great episode, Jimbob thinks he's adopted! Very emotional!
Yes it was.
I loved this episode. I find it amazing that some of the cast directed some of the episodes too.
Yes, both Richard and Ralph did.
I was surprised by how good this episode was when looking back on it again. There was a lot going on and beautifully acted by all. Thanks Judy for another insightful video.
You're very welcome.
Yes it was great!
I thought it was so beautiful how they made illustrations to explain things grandpa was so good at that
Yes he was.
What I found interesting about this episode; especially in light of later knowledge that Mr. Hammer did have twin brothers that he decided to make into one when he was writing, was the fact they had to practically turn around around and make Jimbob into twins where he was the survivor! Interesting.
Actually there were not twins in Earl’s family as far as I know. but rather two of his brothers were combined into the character of Ben.
It was very touching! Thank you so much! ❤️
You are so welcome!
Yes, this was a very emotional episode.
True.
Always dreamt about a treehouse. I'm sure many have wondered about the same issue I can't help get emotional over this. But enjoyed I find this fascinating. Well done. Thank you.
There was a neighborhood tree house that several of us made good use of, and had great adventures in it.! ! 🦋🦋

This was a very touching episode, it did make me cry. I often wondered how it was possible to get so much storyline in each episode.
Yes, the writers did a great job.
Lovely Commentary.

The conversation that John had with his son Jim Bob, and when Jim Bob hugged Olivia I was so moved.
