Watching the Paralympics has taught me so much about acceptance of other people's different abilities but also... If they can lift more, throw further and run faster than me, how come they still get to park closer to Tesco?
After viewing Jim's vids, I've come to the conclusion that his jokes are secondary to his audience and heckler interactions. Often I've felt that if a comedian interacts with their audience , at length, he/she doesn't have enough credible material to go by but this guy has sold us candy and we love it. What a great spontaneous talent. Hilarious.
I have just watched this with other disabled athletes and we all laughed it clever well delivered comedy not cheap tat and that's how he gets away with it
Paraplegic isn't a bad guess though, and not entirely incorrect. It was originally named after paraplegics and olympics, the official story for the name was changed as an afterthought.
Mason Wong As I understand, a big part of why they changed it is due to the evolution from an event held for people with spinal cord injuries, to people confined to wheelchairs to people with all kinds of disabilities in its modern form. Since it no longer makes sense the official explanation of the word has changed to accommodate.
Nope. That's not revisionism - it's factism. Originally a portmanteau: paraplegic + olympics Now a portmanteau: parallel + olympics Because the committee that runs the games felt that the original portmanteau was no longer inclusive enough. The original games, played in 1948 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital had been organised by neurologist Ludwig Guttman who had said of the games that they would be seen as:“the paraplegics’ equivalent of the Olympics”. SMH is the home of the National Spinal Injuries Centre in the UK, and much of this dealt with lower spinal cord injuries leading to paraplegic conditions.
I hope I don't get a bunch of hate for this post but if every topic that offended someone was off limits for comedians there would be no comedy left. I saw a video with Joan Rivers and she made a joke about the deaf and a guy in the audience got angry and said she shouldn't make fun of the deaf because he had a deaf child. She said her mother is deaf and comedy is to help us deal with life's problems. Anyway she also made a joke about her husband's suicide and I actually laughed. I know what it is like to have a loved one die that way and her joke was about how you feel when that happens. She said, I was so angry when my husband committed suicide, if he ever came back I would kill him.
crystalheart9 I agree. In comedy, if you aren't crossing the line, you're towing it. And jokes exist to point out the absurdity in something. It's rarely if ever laughing at or making fun of the situation itself or the people involved. It's laughing at or making fun of the circumstances surrounding it.
Offensiveness is just an extreme form of subversiveness which is the root of comedy. Piers Morgan saying something offensive and Frankie Boyle doing it are different, as long as there's a joke there.
+crystalheart9 Yes people today think that if something offends them it should not be allowed to exist. It is completely the opposite of the truth. It is good to talk about offensive things. That is how we can understand them and get over them. Comedian Steve Hughes has a hilarious set on being offended. Must watch.
As somebody severely crippled by an unmanageably large ballsack, I'd just like to confirm that I and my brothers in disability are willing to pretend to be cool with jokes like this so that people will consider us brave and self-assured.
What is there to joke about, if you can't joke about troubles and issues in the world? "Lol I came home from a great day at work and went to bed" yep, that's funny.
This bit was used by Ricky Gervais in an old Xfm episode with Steve Merchant and Karl 'the K Man' Pilkington. I think Ricky and Steve knew Jimmy from their days on Meet Ricky Gervais and The 11 O'Clock Show.
dude he's a comedian! he doesn't actually mean any of the things that he is saying. He is just making jokes purely for entertainment and to make people laugh. You just need to grow up and get a sense of humour.
Disabled people don't get treated poorly in the UK. What a joke. Everyone has had to cut back. Disabled people are given money by the State to live on. That's not treating them poorly. A few cutbacks to this allowance is fair if everyone else has to as well.
I think Jimmy has done more for any person with a physical deformity or loss of a body part than anyone who says: "don't look at the person over there, it's not nice to look." Let's just accept people who are different for what they are instead of thinking that noticing them is offensive. I certainly wouldn't want sympathy from a horse because I only have 2 legs.
have you seen the recent cuts to Remploy and all the disabled plpe who are now unemployed....have you seen the effects of austerity on disabled plpe... I do have the facts and as much as you may tout carr as a spokesman for disabled plpe he aint, he is part of the problem..
the first part in undervaluing someone/groups starts by making jokes...so it aint funny making jokes about disabled and he is an arsehole for doing it....but hey, maybe that's where english humour is at...in the gutter...
originally it actually was paraplegic olympics, but to also represent people with other handicaps they changed the meaning to the greek "para" >> beside, alongside
Blow football. It's a table-top game in the UK where one person sits at one end of the table and the other person sits at the other end of the table. You put a ping pong ball in the middle of the table and each person has to blow it through a make-shift goal on the other side. i.e. if they were paraplegic (paralysed from the waist down and in a wheelchair), that is the only "sport" you can really do.
"Paratroopers? What they were all injured in service and thought we might as well have a sports day?" Well actually that kind is how the Paralympics did start.
as someone on wheels i find it uplifting when people don't walk on eggshells around the topic. People being PC as if we were fragile and stupid may think they are the good guys, but no one likes tip-toeing around them. and surely someone insane enough to play rugby on a freaking minitank, deserves some jokes anyway
Really? True natural selection hardly even applies to humans anymore with all of our technological and medical improvements. Doing that would have virtually no impact with all the other factors there are hindering human evolution. Besides that, nobody said it was only about people who are impaired for genetic reasons which completely throws out the argument once you consider the amount of disabled people who have no genetic disadvantages to pass on.
No there isn't. There is Godwin's Law, a theory that says the longer an internet discussion runs, the more likely it is that someone will refer to Hitler. It makes no comment on whether this ends the discussion or if the person making the comment automatically loses.
I watched a program a while back where a comedian with cerebral palsy (Josh Blue?) did some jokes about having a girlfriend in a wheelchair. The bit ended with the old joke about how they broke up because "I guess I just pushed her too far". So there's at least two comedians who have joked about it
Kevin Bridges also did an act about the Paralympics which I would recommend watching. both comedians absolutely hilarious but have very different styles
You know something like that happened on a Junstin Bieber concert, The whole front role was with this years paralympic weelchair medalists, and than a miracle happened, after the first song they all stood up and left.
He made a brilliant, darwinistic point about nature and how the strong should better disabled people. You, on the other hand, just insulted disabled people for being disabled. Lacking intellect maybe?
Did you know there is an actual theory which says that an internet discussion ends the second someone makes a hitler reference? Because it is believed that the discussion has reached such a low point that it cannot be saved.
eugenics and evolution are not the same "under a different name", you seem to be greatly ignorant about the subject you are trying to debate. i suggest actually learning about it.
Funny, Im still a top comment. Maybe popular opinion agrees with me, they just don't want to speak out. And for the record, I was replying to someone else that was hating on Jimmy Carr, and my response was more of a troll than how I actually feel. However, it does help people to see both sides of the argument. Youre welcome.
Yes the Spartans keep only the strong alive and raised them as soldiers. In the end it was their refusal to accept change that lead them to their defeat.
Some times this guy speaks so fast that i think that the video speed if too fast and even lower the speed, then he sounds like a normal person but the people in the background sound weird (the laughing)
It's amazing how his responses are within less than a millisecond.
ah the wonders of robotics
Good on Jimmy for not paying tax. Tax is indistinguishable from theft. Cut more and privatise the public sector
what did he mean when he was like " hang on that would be just below football". I didnt get it
+Kareem Salem
That would just be BLOW football...
Watching the Paralympics has taught me so much about acceptance of other people's different abilities but also...

Now that deserves more than 4 likes per year..
Are you quoting a comedian? That was a very well formed joke.
@@drewlovelyhell4892 thanks! I know a good joke, when I steal one.

Paranormal Olympics. Nailed it.
Ah - you only think that you nailed it when it was your spirit guide that whispered it in your ear!

what a strange thing to write.
@Paul In Kyushu who cares when he is so funny, chill out
The bloke who yelled "spacker olympics" deserves a medal.
What's better than winning the paralympics? Having legs
being cured?
It's not about winning...it's about sitting there.
Damn, the best response would be "Parasite", imagine all the woooooooooo!
oh , now that's good.
Oddly enough, he's about right with the Paralympics being essentially a sports day for injured servicemen.
"Colonel Dan, you ain't got no legs!"
Comedy as it was supposed to be. Non politically correct
para legs that don't work
I have just watched this with other disabled athletes and we all laughed it clever well delivered comedy not cheap tat and that's how he gets away with it
I'm in a wheelchair and thought this was hilarious.
Would you give him a standing ovation though?
That’s because u can’t stand up for ur rights!
Wait a second!

+Nelson Ricardo no because there are other people in the paralympics like blind people?

If you search for 'Harry Crosby Comedy Podcast pt2: Paralympics', those two comedians rip the hell out of the Paralympics!!
I just can't help but laugh. He is an amazing on-the-spot comedian. He might be offensive, but boy is he funny!
Thank you Bush and Blair for all the medals!

He seemed to be toning it down in this segment. Usually he pushes the boundaries a lot further, but this was oddly restrained for Jimmy.
This bit was used by Ricky Gervais in an old Xfm episode with Steve Merchant and Karl 'the K Man' Pilkington. I think Ricky and Steve knew Jimmy from their days on Meet Ricky Gervais and The 11 O'Clock Show.
Weird innit?
the special Olympics are the one where there all winners looooooool classic
Jimmy Carr never fails to impress. Pleasing wordplay.
When Ellie Simmonds won her gold medal her dad was Happy. Or Bashful. Or Sneezy...
He's so quick to come up with his jokes, I'm genuinely impressed.
Like this from Jimmy, didn't think it was at all offensive, unlike contributions from some more classless comedians.
Elliot Saunders haha

the Para stands for PARODY. Hahahahahahahaha.
+wanker4761 Good one
+wanker4761 Right but its called the Paralympics not the Parolympics... :P
Surely that would be for people out on parole. :D
I always thought the parolympics and special Olympics were the same thing.
He is brilliant!
Whoa.
lol.
Seems like Jimmy's got the wrong idea about the meaning of 'paralytic'..
Paralytic is actually used in the UK as a slang word to mean very drunk.
Disabled people don't get treated poorly in the UK. What a joke. Everyone has had to cut back. Disabled people are given money by the State to live on. That's not treating them poorly. A few cutbacks to this allowance is fair if everyone else has to as well.

So you're saying that an handicapped person can't make a joke about handicapped people?
1:55 there is ONE dude that gets it before everyone else...
I think that the condescending tone and the disabled word are the true offense here.
the bombings in boston might pump up the numbers in the paralympics (in bad taste? yes)

They do. There is a good video on here of them at an event, talking about the nature and parameters of comedy
Yes the Spartans keep only the strong alive and raised them as soldiers. In the end it was their refusal to accept change that lead them to their defeat.
