- Twenty years ago today, on August 11, 2001, X Games held its first Skateboard Street competition at City Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And it was mayhem. Imagine the scenario: across a busy downtown street from Love Park, Philadelphia's City Hall was already a go-to destination for street skaters. And with the addition of a few banked landings that created new lines, X Games took to the streets for the very first time. Featured skaters include Kerry Getz, Eric Koston, Kareem Campbell, Kyle Berard, Chris Senn, Ricky Oyola, Rick McCrank, Josh Kalis and some impromptu MC'ing from Jason Ellis.

I was one of the 16year old Sk8er kids in the background in this. I remember not believing the Xgmaes were coming 2 Philadelphia let alone Street Sk8ing at the Court House, in those days, when they were chasing down and tackling sk8ers on those same streets.
Hometown Hero Kerry Getz with the win over Koston and the rest of them west coasters.
Shout out to Remo's pop over the orange barrier, I still feel that 20 years later.
Life is unreal sometimes.

These were the days! Never forget meeting Tony hawk, Shawn white, Steve Cab and a bunch of other guys around this time and getting a board signed by all of them
Time to do a throwback competition called the Ex-Games, bring it back to the same early spots and invite the same people. The fans would go nuts.

This was a great throwback all the amazing skaters skating real street can’t get any better then this it was incredible.
sometimes you forget how fast the sport has evolved. Looking at Yuto, Nijah, Luan doing crazy tricks that were impossible at that time.
What's crazy is Rick McCrank was skating back then in ways that would absolutely stand up today. He was far and away the best all around skater on earth outside of Danny Way, although Rick wasn't bad on vert either. He was doing flip front feebles down handrails in the 90's in contests. There aren't many guys from back then that would 100% hold up today but he's one of them. Seeing this contest footy of him brought back so many memories of skating parks with him and constantly being blown away. His video parts never did him justice in the very least.
they weren't impossible at that time. todays skaters are still mimicking the style and vibe of 97-03. nijah has tricks, but he's got no style compared to penny and kareem. the only real differences between then and now is that pro skaters back then would go days without skating and a video part would come out every other year or so, while today they're always in the camera and footage is ever constant. there's also big money in the industry today. to think of nike as a skateboard brand back then would have been laughable, and we would have been completely against it. nike didn't belong in our sport. it's come a long way as far as accessibility and acceptance. for instance i've definitely had my share of trouble just from wearing sal 23s and people thinking i was wearing fake jordans back then. today it's fine.
I´ve seen with my little brother, I started to skate in my stance and practice tricks and later I´ve started to practice switch tricks, he instead started practice normal and switch tricks at the same time, that used to blew my mind, and future generations will blow our minds. Sick.
@@666thsense Let me be more precise here...Nobody thought of the tricks they do today in -> contests. Bastien Salabanzi was one of the first I saw doing full cab flips to boardslide (I think?) in his runs. I agree on the style. Koston has such an unique one... I'm not on the Nijah hatetrain tho.
@@sevdre425 zach saraceno has crazy smooth style especially for a kid that young. he’s got penny flow to him. luan is great too, but i feel like the style is fewer and further between than it used to be. skating now is more of a job for these new guys and it shows.
Getz winning that on homecourt is everything.
We need these again, these or the down hill skating that was cool too.
I remember this. Then right after this Philly skatestopped Love Park and City Hall and started cracking down. Even though Ken Block from DC offered $1 million to allow skaters in Love Park. Typical dumb philly politicians. Forget the money and the skateboarders! I'd rather have the park filled with dope addicts shooting up and bums boozing and trying to rob people. Makes sense. Anyway shout out Kerry Getz for always being nice to me in his skate shop in Philly! Super nice dude. Also helped me to make peace with my OCD.

I was in high school for the Philly x-games series. I have Eric Kostons helmet and Chris Senn emerica t-shirt from Park comp from the 01-02 x games. Also met Bob Burnquist after his 99 point Vert final and bought a pair of shoes from Kerry Getz at his store Sub Zero. Will never forget those times! Now these locations dont even exist, city hall was renovated and the LOVE statue was moved. Only thing left is FDR

I think we need to have a throwback 🤔 decade back to back X games skateboarding 🛹 legends of all time and history to make sure they can be able to have enough practice and timing when the time is right they will landed the right lines and goods tricks and special tricks to help out with their own air and landing tricks in their spot to landed that versatility and variety of tricks! X games legends is really cool 😎💯🔥🔥💥💥🐐🏆

We tried to see if they'd be chill about skating city hall the night of the contest after they cleared the x-games out. Cops were there waiting to kick people out. Fun day though and cool seeing Harold Hunter in Philly.

I'm no history buff (though I am a buff man), but these cute little throwsbacksies are starting to rattle my interest in the good ol days. Now I can't go 88 miles per hour on my skateboard, but I'm sure I can find 88 skater boys that would love to fill me up with all their juicy knowledge of the past.
