$50 DIY PAINT JOB on a Crusty K5 Blazer (Surprisingly Good Results!)

- BUDGET BUILD! Cheap paint and a few other affordable items made a big difference on this 1987 Chevrolet K5 Blazer.I bought new taillights, a headlight bezel and tailgate straps...everything else was just good old fashioned manual labor. Lots of cleaning and detailing, and some bodywork to get it ready for the ridiculously cheap flat black paint job. All together, I spent about $200 on parts and materials for this entire makeover, but could've easily scuffed and shot this thing for a $50 bill.
This truck had some issues...I addressed some of them and let the new owner address the rest of them. It had a pretty major transmission leak, an exhaust leak and a few other little issues, but my main goal was getting the body straightened up for a low budget paint job. The Rustoleum flat black paint is about $30 a gallon at Lowes, and the Acetone used to thin it is another $20. So for $50, I had enough material for two generous coats of paint. This stuff is THICK and lays down nice, especially after it dries to a flat finish. I've used Rustoleum glossy paint, but prefer flat on a "rough" project like this one. It hides a lot of imperfections, which is perfect for a quick and cheap job. The $50 Rustoleum flat black made a big difference, and of course, I cleaned the tires and wheels to give it that "ready to go to town" look.

Best part of this is dad and daughter together! Please enjoy every moment with daddy's little girl! God loves you and her.
Yes I would like to see more how to tips on painting and mixing!
Awesome, I'll make sure to shoot more of the process next time. Thanks Douglas!
Yes please make the video
It’s been 8 months please make the video
about to repaint my pops old Jeep Comanche.. sure would like some tips
@@HotRodHoarder yes sir!! Any more details would be greatly appreciated. I wanna bring my old 92 ranger back to life and flat black is exactly what I’m looking to put on it.
Brother your kid is doing her part. The truck is hers. God bless you and your family.
We used to paint our roundy round cars with Rustoleum street stock. Cheap, looked great on the track and easy touch up. Even look pretty good from 50 feet.
Definitely a great option for round track cars...didn't think about that!
i’m not surprised of it being sold that fast. That’s a nice truck. It came out really well. Good job man.
Elbow Grease & Penny Pinching my favorite tools in the box!
Nice to see your Foreman gets her hands dirty helping out!
I've been able to make a lot of money by NOT spending money haha. Carlee liked helping, but didn't love the dust and dirt when it came time for some body work.
@@HotRodHoarder 👍 PPE comes in pink now.
Really liked your video… I actually redid my 73 ford with this stuff and it came out nice! I was mainly looking to just clean up the truck but the paint turned out much better than I thought. Thanks!!
I've done these techniques before for getting cheap but good paint jobs as well on just basic cars that don't need fancy paint. The only step I add in is throwing an couple of quarts of rustoleum clear over it flat or gloss depending on what your painting helps and on the gloss paint an good wax and buff job helps it last and protect it better as well with any paint job
which number rustoleum clear did you use? did u catalyze it? thanks. Is it UV resistant?
@@jdbiz there's an few that rustolium offers you can get there industrial quarts of clear in semi gloss or gloss or they do provide automotive paint as well which I belive they have another type of clear just for cars. I'll look it up and get back to you on the clear but the best thing is not an catalyst but more of adding in an bit of hardner with it for durability purpose then of course people always worry about to much when if you know paint you always cut and buff at the end and that the true first line of defense for your car paint and usually you can cut out most orange peal and runs if not real bad but hopefully there's no runs
@@jdbiz 253522 rustolium clear coat
Is flat rustoleum less durable than gloss or semi gloss? Will be using a hardener
@logansmith9990 flat paint will always be less durable in my opinion unless you use an flat clear over it as it's lacking the plastics and other chemicals that surface and create the gloss finish in other paints that are gloss or semi gloss but also look into rustolium automotive line paints and or duplicolor laquar paints! Some other cheaper ways to go on paint is through Napa getting automotive paint or look for nason paint products they're fair price and you can get single stage urethane paint.
I'd love to see more detail on this paint job!
I clicked when I seen the deep dish wheels and tire combo. I have always loved that look and it was great seeing your daughter out there working with you and Dad too!
Have a great weekend man and God Bless you and yours.
Turned out awesome! 👍👍 I love these old Blazers (and Broncos too) of that era. They were serious off road machines, not just comfort riding grocery getters. I remember getting firewood with my dad in his 79 Blazer as a kid. Very nice work!!
Thanks David!
I have watched this video several times. I love rust oleum paint jobs and square body’s and flat black truck’s.
I'd like to see more about how you do this, and I thought it was Awesome seeing the little lady helping you.
Make the videos you like to make brother. We'll be watching.
Cool seeing your girl helping you! Keep passing the love on down!
Yes. Awesome video. Thank you. Im going to be doing that same paint job on my 54 Ol'Beater truck.
Looking for ideas to paint a Toyota Corolla that’s been owned by at least 2 college boys, and this was exactly what I was looking for. Excellent tutorial and thank you!
Excellent work and video Sir. Thank you for your time and explanation. Will be watching more of your content.
Thank you for the video.
Please give more of this type of content.
Keep up the good work.
I use tons of rustoleum on equipment, cars, motorcycles, trucks, etc it is a great product to work with. Go by the product instructions on the can if I remember correctly your safe as long as you do not reduce your paint greater than 10%. With rustoleum use a measuring cup please do not dump and guess when mixing any paints or coatings. To reduce rustoleum stay away from chemically hot solvents or it will kill your paint color learned this years ago. Personally I use medium acrylic enamel reducer is what works for me. Xylene and low odor mineral spirits are fine. Before any paint work wash everything you plan to sand and paint thoroughly use Ospho or prepetch wash with and last tide like your cleaning a engine block fresh from the machine shop this is from my experience is extremely important. A good Wipe with coleman fuel its cheaper than prep sol aka pre cleano and works fine when you get to wiping clean with solvent. As for shooting the primer I use a hvlp gun. With the paint I use my devilbiss mbc or my devilbiss jga for a nice shiny finish. Also if you want rustoleum to shine and lay out better add some penetrol. This is really a great beer budget diy video. I encourage people to paint their own vehicles its fun and you will have a feeling of accomplishment along with a nice paint job you did. You can use a roller or a brush if you do not have a compressor done that before works fine. Thank you again your videos are excellent. I always enjoy them and appreciate them.
That's awesome, thank you for all the great tips!
I definitely enjoy videos that show how to do improvements on vehicles
Saying that this thing is/was "crusty" is a bit much. It's in insanely good condition. As for the $50 paint job, it looks phenomenal. Nice work dude. And having your daughter help you is so amazing and definitely brought the feels. It gives me warm feelings of when I was young helping my pawpaw on his cars out in the barn.
Holy cow! Well done! That looks so good for what it is.
I love these type videos. I love Rust-Oleum. It's a quality paint and gives good results when sprayed. Did my trailer last year with the same ratio and looks amazing!
Rust opium doesn't get hard enough. Dupli color is good.
@@wthigo77 imagine being a $50 paint snob 🤣
@@contraband1543 $50 paint snob? It would cost you more than that to do it with rust oleum. Rust oleum does not get hard it's almost like a soft plastic which will scrape off. Dupli color is more suited for auto.
@@wthigo77 I have used hardener with it...course hardener was $25 alone...seemed to help a lot..
But I'll def check into Dupli color..!
I have a bunch of old trucks that I've been wanting to do this too but didn't know if it would work with Rust-Oleum and now I know it will with the price of a paint job these days you got to get creative thank you for sharing
All of your videos are worth the watch! Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
Kickass job! RUclips recommended your channel and they didn’t fail. 👍👍👍
Great video! I am actually thinking of painting my car and that’s how I stumbled upon your video. Great job.
Did this on my Jeep grill and tailgate, minus the hardener. Has held up through four New England winters no problem.
This is super cool, I’ve always been into muscle cars I drive a 2006 mustang right now , I really want to buy a classic project paint it and daily drive it. Your videos are definitely an inspiration!
Great video!!! Please do more of this type! It is good for those of us who want to improve stuff, but have no aspiration or hope of being pro level body painters!!!
I'm planning on shooting my xj this way, so thanks for the idea. Also, I'm really impressed watching your daughter become a mechanic.
I have a 87 GMC Sierra that desperately needs this type of attention!
Thanks for a great informative video 👍🏻
I once painted a truck, bought nice automotive paint, hardener reducer etc.
Came out beautiful Gloss Black...
About 5 years later started seeing some surface cracks as if the paint kept hardening and pulling against itself.
So for a paint job that might last just as long and be cheaper Id say this is a Great Alternative.
I'm having that happen on a truck we had painted professionally in 2004. Paint cracking like it had Bondo work but it didn't. Mostly in a couple areas where maybe they got the paint too thick. There is at least one run in it too. Otherwise still pretty nice. So pro paint will harden over time and crack?
That turned out really nice I'm sure the guy who bought it loves it as much as the rest of us do
Thank you for the video. It would be great if you can give a little bit more detail on how to mix the paint and how to actually paint for somebody who doesn’t have no experience. Thank you.❤
Awesome job! Yes I would like to see more detail on how to prep & mix. Thank u.
This works. I knew a guy that lived across street that painted his Nova with that paint and looked badass.
I did my truck exactly the same way it came out bad ass thanks for the video ..the only difference is that I used satin black
Looks good I did a cheap paint job to my tercel wagon I did a full rattle can paint job and cleared it I had roughly 300 to 350 in buying primer paint and clear and it actually came out amazing I haven't even wet sanded and buffed it cause it laid down so good I see no reason to mess with it car shines awesome. It's been done for a year now sat outside all year long and so far paints holding up amazing rattle can jobs can look good just alot of people don't do the proper prep. I now have a k5 I'm working on and kicking around painting it since I do have to do some body work its a 2 ton and I haven't ever done a 2 ton paint job before
God! I love this paint job! I have an 04 ford explorer that needs this so badly!!!
Primer, it's been done for many years nothing new people, gray or black works. My grandpa showed me this 30 years ago and it does work. As you see this guy is a excellent painter with a sprayer, great job dude.👍👍👍👍
In the early 80s the local hardware was going out of business. My friend bought 8 gallons of custom tinted blue rustoleum that was tinted wrong. For years afterwards every vehicle Bob had was that color including the " camper/ school bus.
No matter what he happened to be driving he stood out of the crowd.
At 10 feet the paint looked 👌.
Lol that is so funny : )
Brother! This is refreshing to see. Im in the process of repainting my 82 El Camino the same way that you’ve done here. I just happened to be scrolling through while taking a break from sanding on it. The only difference is that im doin mine with “rattle cans”. Rustoleum makes great stuff. Anyhow….GREAT JOB ON THE K5 bro!
I'm about to redo mine. I have an 85 Elco. Didn't have any of the equipment at the time (compressor, spray gun etc...). So I roller brushed it with rustoleum satin black just to get it all one color, didn't come out half bad but after 7 years and a few spray can touch ups, it definitely needs a freshening up and a nice even coat.
Would too more of these types of videos. The truck looks awesome. Would love too see camo type paint job . Great video thanks
That truck came out sweet. Love the old K5 blazers. Would have liked to seen it parked in my driveway. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching David. This one still had some unresolved mechanical issues, but I see its new owner driving it all over town.
Damn. It's really nice. Even at beginning. I came from Ohio a few years ago and I'm amazed how much nicer Tennessee cars are.
Yeah, I'm sure these things got rusty super quick up north. This one had a few rough places, but not bad at all!
Great! Clean bodywork makes all the difference.
Slick, sleak and simple. Great job My friend.
This actually makes me feel better informed about painting my '89 Suburban soonish hopefully (depending on when I get a couple holes patched up)
I would like to see more on how to paint, want to do my 96 k1500 like that. really helpful to people that have a hard time doing stuff like me.. great video ty for doing a how to on ratio
Looks way better for cheap...little details like painted bezels and taillights helps overall, too.
Those are always my favorite things to do for a project car. Little details go a long way.
Lil helper was really cute... Enjoy those moments, they grow up fast.
Awesome video, Thank you for the detailed explanation
This is such a sweet blazer. Love it in flat black wow 😍😍😍
Considering, your knowledge is an extension of your Das knowledge I think that is an outstanding idea
Thank you for the video. We have a burnt farm tractor that needs to be painted someday. Videos like this will be helpful.
Thank you for watching Michelle! Good luck with your project!
I’m there too! Love some more detail on mixing and painting. Keep um comin!
81 C20 I rolled with the satin and it looked awesome. I only summer drove the truck, so I done the body work with drywall mud. Yup, mud. Easy to sand and the mud/primer was from work, so free. The truck did not drive in the rain much, but the paint would last the summer and rinse and repeat for the next season. Oh, put a 71 block from a LeMans, new carb and that thing would fly. Have a Duramax now, but I miss that truck.
Had an old 85 F150 I'd painted several times with left over Latex house paint. Paint got pretty thick on it.
Great video, restoring one myself... will be following and browsing your channel!
cool video and awesome paint job
Cant believe it came out so good
Awesome job to you and your little helper
This dude is amazing for showing his kids young how to work on a vehicle
loved to see your little helper my daughter learned early too great looking rig
Well done sir! Thank you for the detailed information.
Just watched this and I like what you did on the cheap
Thumbs up for your little helper.
Now I know to check out the complete video first.. so much for the kid getting the truck.
Absolutely, simply because if and when I paint my truck it have to be done in driveway. Thanks again.
Will do, thank you!
The best part for me was daddy's girl lifting the tail gate. God bless her.
Got that kid helping out its always nice to see
Great spray for equipment ,we do all our plows ,rakes ,blades ,prettu much everything short of the tractors
Best budget paint vid ive seen. Would love to see more detailed video
gem of a video, exactly what i was looking for!
I got a long bed 1989 dodge D100 it’s my first project and I’m turning 16 2 months and I want it to look good for high school next year so I watched this haha!
Bad ass truck man . Real good job.
Great assistant!
Easy sub. Thanks for the quick tips and quick vid. Looking to do a quick paint job on my 76 cam for now !
Years ago I run an auto body repair shop and I had a cousin bring in his truck. He wanted it painted. No sanding. wash it down and mask it off and paint it. Well I did just that. Turned out really nice and the funny thing is it never pealed. The paint stayed on like it was factory. He drover it for a few years and traded it in for a newer truck and the paint was still fine.
Awesome job man. Love all your videos
As usual, awesome video!!
Nice job and excellent description
Absolutely beautiful
I painted my pickup with john deere medium gloss black 5 years ago and it still looks good. sanded it with 120 then 220 grit no primer no Bondo no bodywork washed it wiped it down with a good wax and grease remover and sprayed it. it turned out really good.
John deere black? So just black then.. john deere does make some good ass paint tho. The green i know goes on like powder coating..
huge market for the old square body out there....they are one of my favs still today
That blazer looks pretty darn good!
Good job and good video / narration!
More video please love it trying to learn how to paint on my own projects thank you.
Great video! You did a great job! Wish I could've bought that truck
Yes I would like to see how to do the right mixture on the paint thanks for your time good video
Great video definitely giving me ideas for my truck
Nice Low buck Paint Job. I’m getting ready to do the same thing on
my Dump Truck. Just Subscribed to your channel! Keep up the great
Works
Great Video. That's how a DIY video gets done. Please make one of the mixture
That corvette looks beautiful 👀
Random and rambling, but whenever I see a K5 Blazer, it brings me back to the days of living in northeast Ohio. I knew someone that had one, and rust belt winters were not kind to these. Around the entire rear wheel wells, there was 6" of....nothing. No rockers left, holes in the doors and front fenders, and even the door jambs were so rusty that the door sagged a few inches when opened---you had to lift up the door to get it to close
Good job man what a nice rig
A buddy of mine had one like this but two tone black with grey, it looked bad ass.
Very nice. I have a 93’ 2Dr Jeep Cherokee that I’m going to do with the raptor lining on it because it’s main purpose will be for hunting.
I’ve mixed it 5-2 with a cap full of Japan Drier to help it flash off and dry quicker. One part hardener to that mix also helps as you said. Just note that the hardener will also add gloss to the paint if you want that effect. Good video and good instruction, thanks.
Thanks Bob, I haven't ever used the Japan Drier, but have heard it works well.
Agreed 👍
@@HotRodHoarder Yes indeed Japan Dryer in rustoleum it works very well plus its not expensive.
Good tips. Thanks.
Im part of your fan club !!! All your videos are excellent !!! Keep up the great work !!
Thank you for watching George!
