I just seen it, I thought it was a 7/10 just about. Mescal's Gladiator had no depth at all, pretty gutted as I thought he would be terrific, he is a very good actor, but yes, the script did nothing for him here, nothing to work with. The ending scene was really odd to me, I was waiting for some words explaining what happened next or something, but nope. Connie Neilsen was very good in her parts, as was Denzil. An enjoyable BIG Screen movie though, glad I saw it in the cinema
Double Toasted makes jokes but there is documented evidence of the Coliseum being filled with water for naval battles. Though it likely was not at this period and there probably where not sharks. 😅

It's kinda funny how Martin complains about that rhino's horn being way too large for its head when in reality actual rhino horns can get MUCH longer and even heftier than that. The one in the movie is actually just a bit over average sized for a white rhino (which is the species of rhino used in that scene) XD

He could’ve taken the Coppola route and make weird Indy passion projects that make people forget how he was once one of the best directors dating from the 70’s-early 90’s.
That's the main problem with the sequel. They did flood it but it was the first 10 years of opening it, but then they dug out the floor to house the animals and fighters like we saw in the first one so backwards. Historians also say that their were actually three places they held games and one was right by the sea so they just dug a tunnel and let the water and whatever else flood in so sharks are possible but not in the actual Coliseum we know today.
I don't think anybody's watching this for a 100% accurate historic epic they're just watching it for the concepts taken from history sandwiches into a movie that looks awesome but that's it
I knew it was going to be historically inaccurate because the first one was but the story itself was bullshit. They tried to fit a square peg in a round hole.
I watched it last night. I really liked it. I think it has the same apeall that the original did in that before then there was Sparticus and gladitor had the benift of having that film as a blueprint but the style and texh of the time. G2 is the same thing except they havevhad the beneift of havings tons and tons of stuff to draw inspiration from like GoT, ROME, ect. The opening battle has some things in there that you see in like modern action films in terms of like how they show the brute power of some of these weapons . Someone gets impailed with a launced stake that literally lifts them off the ground. Nothing like that in G1.
@@krisj827 my point is, Denzel is an old school actor. Doing a scene like that was probably mentally and possibly spiritually hard for him. Which is why I can imagine he had to be upset after getting the news

What I find most interesting is that first came Gladiator, then came Pompeii which was a ripoff of Gladiator, and then came Gladiator 2 which seems to have more than a little influence from Pompeii as well as being a retread of Gladiator. “Oh no. I’ve gone cross-eyed.”
I wasnt able to connect to this movie like original. In the original the issue was the huge betrayal and the stakes felt personal. They spent time establishing the CHARACTERS rather than giving just flimsy motivation
I’m sure Korey and Martin get into this but when I first heard that this was happening my first thoughts were: “How? Why?” The first Gladiator was such a complete and self-contained story that I had no clue how they were going to make a natural story flow out of the first one. I’ll probably still see it at some point just because I’m so morbidly curious how much of a crazy film it’ll be and I just love Roman history so much I tend to just watch any piece of Ancient Roman media regardless of how inaccurate or bad it is.
I love Corey but he's exactly like so many RUclips reactors who watch historical movies and have this inclination to question the accuracy of things with no knowledge and too much confidence. People would be surprised by how crazy history is. Viewers these days never give the filmmakers the credit that they'd maybe know better. Things like the sharks aren't probable but it's not that removed from what WAS possible (like staging navel battles in the Colosseum after being filled with water).
It actually was going to be even more insane than this compare to some of the first ideas for a sequel. My favorite, would had to be bringing back Maximus by entering the afterlife where the dying Roman Gods would had send Maximus on a assassination mission to Earth to kill Jesus and his apostles only for Maximus to pull a Terminator 2 and become Jesus's bodyguard 😂 I think it was even called Gladiator 2: Salvation or Messiah. Apparently, Russell Crowe hated the script.
That is an actual story in rememon gladiator it's a mystical story Damocles is the name the gladiator that returned from the dead it's a really good story The game rise son of Rome did it justice
They had sharks, rhinos, alligators, lions amd tigers..A lot of people did die. They would have people who had crossed the church face gladiators. They also had them against wild animals. A lot of people were also burnt to death in the coliseum. They didn't dig deep into their history. Rome was very sadistic.
One correction there was no Church in the Roman empire period during the Coluseum events, they worshipped Zeus, and other mythological idols, they were threatened by the spread of The Way, people who repented and chose to follow the ways of Christ, and the authorities felt threat to worship of the Emperor, However, your right Christians, followers of Christ were persecuted, tortured , murdered in the Roman arenas, some records advise they would put animal skin on them and let wild animals lose on them for entertainment, very sadistic, The Church actually didn't develop until centuries later, the Church actually went contrary to the Bible and was the period when apostasy set in
No it’s just some of us have a brain and think about things like how did Lucius forget he was a Roman prince even though he lived that way for the first 12 years of his life.
@ The point is complaining people are arguing about fake movies not being accurate when we live in a world built on lies we don’t know what the truth is to be me called accurate
I’m just surprised they didn’t bring back the original actor who played Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark) he’s in his 30s now and it would have brought some familiarity back from the original.
Lucius isnt his son....the whole point of the first movie was his wife and child were killed. Lucius was the boy obsessed with him from the first movie his mom was ceasars sister..

Korey is being a little exaggerated with the whole shark thing. The sharks were a little silly, but can easily be looked past. Honestly, it promised what was advertised--gladiators fighting, and you get plenty of it.
I read the games went on for 500 years and they came up with all sorts of wacky ways to 'entertain' so them having sharks in the arena is not really a stretch to far in a movie about it.
So i maybe in the minority but i thought the movie was alright, but it was nowhere close to being as good as the first one but i would say its a wait until it comes on tv to watch it. The ending though was absolutely terrible. The best part i think everyone can agree was Denzel Washington.

Denzel voice: GLADIATOR 2 AINT GOT SSSHHHTTT ON ME
“Thou hast mad squabbles, thy moor!”-Denzel, probably
If you go into it wanting to hate it , you will. If you want an action spectacular? You will enjoy it. If you love Denzel? You will love it. If you go with an open mind, it's a great movie.
loved everything except lucious😅 he was so dull to me idk how he got all those ppl on his side. At the end i was rooting for Denzel🤣
He really said "turn your brain off" 3 times within 10 seconds. That kind of movie huh
I agree with Corey on how Lucius's vendetta against Acacius didn't feel justified. Not when his wife tried to take him out from on top the battlements. Acacius was literally acting in self defense when he ordered his archers to shoot her.
Nah it's real they have flooded the Colosseum to reenact naval battles
The Sharks though I don't know, Sharks die if they don't have enough room to swim
They put the “vengeance” shark in the thumbnail 🤣🤣🤣
Don't poke him too much or he'll blow! 😂
They did have death matches in gladiatorial games but like Martin said it wasn't the norm.
Early on, they did fight to the dead but later reformed it to save money. Only about 20% of the fights ending in fatalities
Do the sharks have laser beams attached to their heads?
Double Toasted makes jokes but there is documented evidence of the Coliseum being filled with water for naval battles. Though it likely was not at this period and there probably where not sharks. 😅
"Maybe Maximus is in Gladiator 2?"
"He died in the first one."
"Oh, well, how about Joaquin Phoenix? Surely we can bring him back to reprise his character?"
"He died in the first one."
"Oh, well, how about this... his ONLY son from the first one is now grown up and a Gladiator? Maximus' wife and Proximo disapprove, but they are both happy to see the son of Maximus supporting the continued existence of the Roman empire?"
🤦
I'm pretty sure that his ONLY son died in the first movie as well...
@shawnadams1965 I mean it's slightly alluded to that Maximus is this guy's father. It's just not something that is dwelled on and mostly communicated via subtext.
@shawnadams1965 i believe so when he was dying wasn't he seeing his wife and child in his vision? Been awhile since I seen it
@@FaceFamous been awhile for me as well, but I remember them being run down and then him seeing them in the afterlife.
@@shawnadams1965 Lucious, the son of the emperors sister, is also the son of Maximus. They never outright say it but it's hinted at
The previews showed Boat battles and I was, Well bravo for being the first major Hollywood film to show the arena water battles that did happen!
And then you mention sharks... 🦈🦈😐🦈🦈
Why not? We don't know for sure. The Empire lasted for a while. It's historical fiction. They had water in the arena, and they had exotic animals. It's not that much of a stretch.
@@SubterrelProspector My guy, a shark is not like a land animal. We have trouble keeping them in captivity today because of the conditions required, there's 0 chance that they would last for any length of time back then.
@@lich109 Also piping salt water to the coliseum. The aqueducts relied on gravity feeding them. Rome is only 70 feet above sea level but that is a long 70 feet. Can a shark survive in fresh water for a while? Yes, but not for long.
@@SubterrelProspectorI don’t see a movie because of exotic animals or CGI - I want a good story, a good script and good actors whose merits, if there are any, are killed by endless ridiculous action scenes.
@@SubterrelProspectorI’m guessing you don’t know the difference between salt water and fresh water sharks for this to make any sense yet have a this strong of an opinion😂
"What's the Running Man?!.." bruhhh
I blame Martin for not making this a teaching moment for the young fella.
I facepalmed SO HARD🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
dont worry about it
It’s obvious this is another Ridley Scott movie that is heavily edited. I would love to see the Director’s cut.
Yet another film I have zero desire to see but that would never stop me from enjoying a new episode of Double Toasted👍🏽👍🏽
It's a good movie
Don't lie to him. They had no reason to make this bullshit.@@jwil2414
@@jwil2414I agree, good film.
No sharks, but the Roman Colloseum was flooded with water.
Anything that can make me forget about Trump for a couple of hours is worth every penny.
stop bringing him up would help
@@DIddy-i3z Kinda hard to do when he's president.
It also depend who was emperor at the time. Most emperor did not want to see death, but some of the more insane ones demanded death. If the Gladiator died the Roman state reimburse the owner for the death of the gladiator.
It's kinda funny how Martin complains about that rhino's horn being way too large for its head when in reality actual rhino horns can get MUCH longer and even heftier than that. The one in the movie is actually just a bit over average sized for a white rhino (which is the species of rhino used in that scene) XD
I thought it was a pretty good action film but I preferred Napoleon since both were directed by Ridley Scott. Also, can we just appreciate the fact Ridley Scott is 86 years old and is still churning out enjoyable popcorn movies.
Sharks were never used in the coliseum. Crocodiles however were used a few times and was logistically easier to bring to the coliseum than a shark.
Martin echoed my thoughts exactly.... This film did not justify its existence
All i gotta say: ANYTHING WITH DENZEL WASHINGTON IS WORTH WATCHING.
That's a lie
For better or worse Ridley Scott does what he wants without a care in the world and I'm here for it.
This! Thank for saying this. I was looking for this comment! 💯💯💯💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Same for George Miller and Francis Ford Coppola...
He's made some of the greatest films ever
@midnighthour733 Agreed! Quite a few classics at that as well.
Why make a sequel to a movie you KNOW will NOT touch the original in any way? It ain't money, Ridley's got it, and he's 80+
Denzel has come out and said there was a scene that was cut where he kissed a man
Imagine doing all that and they cut the scene 😂
@@Assassino275that happens in most movies tbh
@@krisj827 my point is, Denzel is an old school actor. Doing a scene like that was probably mentally and possibly spiritually hard for him. Which is why I can imagine he had to be upset after getting the news
They talked about this last night.
Ridley Scott even said that he wanted to make the first Gladiator like the Hollywood sword and sandal epics. Spartacus, Cleopatra, and even Caligula are obvious visual influences on it.
I thought it was a fake movie bruh
they actually said they did have fights with crocodiles in water in the coliseum
So the thumps up and thumps down is a lie? I don't think so. They did flood the Coliseum with water and that's not too far? It's a bloody movie.
Djimon Hounsou didnt return for this one?
It actually was going to be even more insane than this compare to some of the first ideas for a sequel.
My favorite, would had to be bringing back Maximus by entering the afterlife where the dying Roman Gods would had send Maximus on a assassination mission to Earth to kill Jesus and his apostles only for Maximus to pull a Terminator 2 and become Jesus's bodyguard 😂
I think it was even called Gladiator 2: Salvation or Messiah. Apparently, Russell Crowe hated the script.
That is an actual story in rememon gladiator it's a mystical story Damocles is the name the gladiator that returned from the dead it's a really good story
The game rise son of Rome did it justice
They had sharks, rhinos, alligators, lions amd tigers..A lot of people did die. They would have people who had crossed the church face gladiators. They also had them against wild animals. A lot of people were also burnt to death in the coliseum. They didn't dig deep into their history. Rome was very sadistic.
They fed the Christians and Jews to the Lions for sport
One correction there was no Church in the Roman empire period during the Coluseum events, they worshipped Zeus, and other mythological idols, they were threatened by the spread of The Way, people who repented and chose to follow the ways of Christ, and the authorities felt threat to worship of the Emperor, However, your right Christians, followers of Christ were persecuted, tortured , murdered in the Roman arenas, some records advise they would put animal skin on them and let wild animals lose on them for entertainment, very sadistic, The Church actually didn't develop until centuries later, the Church actually went contrary to the Bible and was the period when apostasy set in
I’m convinced that people now just love to complain about fake ass movie don’t supposed make sense it’s for entertainment
No it’s just some of us have a brain and think about things like how did Lucius forget he was a Roman prince even though he lived that way for the first 12 years of his life.
@ Movies fake don’t give a shit about y’all crying about accuracy. But hey we give fake ass critics now🤣
@ The point is complaining people are arguing about fake movies not being accurate when we live in a world built on lies we don’t know what the truth is to be me called accurate
@ I guarantee you y’all didn’t know gladiators really didn’t fight to the death til Martin said it
So looking forward to seeing this.
27:00 actually, Denzel filmed a gay kiss for this movie, but was apparently cut - not by his request
The Collasium could actually fill with water, too. I heard about that part and the boats being true.😊
Yall show the young man The Running Man.
I didn’t know the inspiration for the emperor before watching this and now I can’t get the image of a Roman named Cornholius out of my head.
ACTUALLY Denzel has said he kissed a man in the movie but they cut it out
Martin dropping some great knowledge as usual.
Hope they make gladiator 3 with female gladiators
A woke gladiator 😆
I’m just surprised they didn’t bring back the original actor who played Lucius (Spencer Treat Clark) he’s in his 30s now and it would have brought some familiarity back from the original.
Denzil Washington is my fav actor. Gonna watch for him!
The movie is over 2hrs and he’s there for less then 20mins😂
@ItsJustCartier still worth it :3
Are you not entertained?
Nope
Strength and honour to you all
Just saw it and surprisingly liked it a lot. It was the story for me. And you can tel Denzel was having so much fun with his character
Why did you like it ?
Lucius isnt his son....the whole point of the first movie was his wife and child were killed. Lucius was the boy obsessed with him from the first movie his mom was ceasars sister..
It was heavily implied that Maximus had an affair with Commodus Sister before he married his wife. So it's very likely that Lucius is Maximus' son.
@ implication is not fact. So that can be your head canon but thats as far as that goes. Here in reality, not his son.
No in this movie it's his blood son
@ so mr family man is changed to be a cheater. Shocker in 2024, cant just have a good guy lets ruin him for the sake of making a sequel with damn near the same story just worse.
@@AztecUnshaven Yeah, I agree. I don't think it's100% out of left-field based on the implications in the first movie. That said, it's still a flimsy foundation for an entire sequel.
I’m super excited to see how Ridley Scott is going to tie Gladiator 2 into the Alien Universe.
There were ZERO highs in gladiator 2, Watch 300 to fully Intake into your Body those ceiling hitting sensory highs
Joseph Quinn aka The older tallee brother emperor in movie looked JUST LIKE A YOUNG Morton Downy Jr SERIOUSLY please dont tell me no one saw it
. In thr movie he looked just like him in less then zero their faces are identical
Korey is being a little exaggerated with the whole shark thing. The sharks were a little silly, but can easily be looked past. The baboons were actually more goofier while the rhino scene was the most “believable”. I saw the movie and it moved at a good clip. It’s not deep, but it was fun. Honestly, it promised what was advertised--gladiators fighting, and you get plenty of it.
14:53 yup basically Commander Gaius from Elden Ring 😂
The Colosseum could be flooded, but it was to recreate naval battles, not to fight frigging sharks!
I'm on the fence about this one. I remember seeing the first one with the homies in high school...but we only really saw it cause it was new.
I really enjoyed this review and happy to hear everyone talking
Keep it 300 like the Romans
Y'all really should review Those About To Die on Peacock.
It's kinda funny Julian didn't know what The Running Man is cause they're currently shooting the remake with Glen Powell
The rhino rider was definitely something you'd fight in Elden Ring.
If y’all liked this a bit. Could you guys review the Starz series Spartacus? As a retro view? It was pretty good

Just finished watching this, and I gave it a Matinee!!!
“What’s the Running Man?” That has to be the next movie review
Commodus is one of film history most hated villain's.
Pleas remove the segment where you tell us viewers we are going to watch the trailer. It never happens. Just go on with the review.
I read the games went on for 500 years and they came up with all sorts of wacky ways to 'entertain' so them having sharks in the arena is not really a stretch to far in a movie about it.
It is
When he said WHAT’S THE RUNNING MAN i automatically felt OLD AF 😂😂😂
Supposedly, it was water tight. They may have held ship battles there.

Loved your review…it was such fun and entertaining. In fact I would say I enjoyed your review more than the actual film!! 🍿
So i maybe in the minority but i thought the movie was alright, but it was nowhere close to being as good as the first one but i would say its a wait until it comes on tv to watch it. The ending though was absolutely terrible. The best part i think everyone can agree was Denzel Washington.
