@@GamerGirl997 In the first movie, one of the most iconic clips is Maximus shouting "are you not entertained???"-- Charlie saying that he is in fact entertained was very nice
I was not entertained…a rather surprisingly boring movie, without Denzel and the fight scenes. And Denzel just plays Denzel…he literally says “my man” in the movie.
If they were going to do a sequel 24 years later wasn’t the answer. Just another example of how Hollywood is sequel crazy because they’ve run out of ideas.
There were many things that I hated about the movie, but Macrinus portrayed by Denzel Washington was imo spectacular. His confidence, smile, the way he walked, everything just gave me goosebumps. I actually enjoyed the movie thanks to him, even though the writing and decisions of his character didn't always make sense.
I enjoyed denzels performance in certain moments in this, but something about the american accent in a period piece stands out way too much imo. Other than that, great performance. The way he walks around the senate with the emperors head was an incredible portrayal of "im in charge now". But the way he delivered some lines in this takes me out of it a bit. I love denzel but he stands out ALOT in this. He mightve needed a british accent for this 😂.
@@S1LVAW0LF Yeah, Romans famously sounded British. Also, wasn't Rome big? Like really, REALLY big? Big enough for different dialects? Like American and British English? It's not like those dialects later separated into many different languages.
@lemmypop1300 i see your point but british accents in Hollywood, and in particular, old world accents are utilized in period prices taking place in classical antiquity. The actress that portrays Lucilla, she's american and she puts on a british accent bro. American accents feel off in movies like this, its def not just me. Denzels character was probably representing someone from Mauritania, numidia, former punic territory. We saw how different those dudes sounded from him doe at the beginning of the movie and through interactions with other gladiators in the keep. IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE bro. I just looked it up, marcrinus was from a berber equestrian family in present day Alegria.
I saw the comment about Denzels accent in the film on another channel, but considering the channel it just seems to morph into unnecessary hate for Denzel and how he is a terrible actor and never has been. Or people say he's just a movie star not an actor. Im pretty sure they where speakng in certain context because the general hate for the movie sunk down to Denzel and how terrible he made the movie.
I wished they had done a better job playing up the parallels between Lucious and Denzel’s character. They’re both people who were burned by Rome and lost faith in its ability to be redeemed so they just want it to burn. Lucious learns to let go of his hatred and see the potential in Rome whereas Denzel can’t. It’s like the opposite of the first Gladiator where the solution isn’t revenge, but learning to work past it and see the good which hatred blinded you to (not that this solution would have worked for Maximus since Commodus could only be killed for Rome to have a chance). There were a lot of interesting concepts that just didn’t really come out well in the end. Would have liked to see a more natural transition for Lucious.
THAT was your issue??? What about realism??? *opening scene… a general rushing into battle tearing his armor off???? Rihnos fighting 5 dudes but suddenly becomes a 1v1 where did the other 3 go??? (Showed one guy killed). But worst of all was when they spoke to the crowd in the arena like they didn’t even yell lmfao

Generally agree but Charlie missed a lot of big hints I think lol, like the smaller twin is insane because of syphilis. Denzel's character worked out himself who luscious is pretty much and targets the bald dude because he is known for having spies everywhere so he can get the details of the plot he worked out must be going on, and ties into his plot he already had to take over by accumulating power/wealth. To me it didn't make sense why the bald dude told him though because Denzel is not gonna give him his house back anyway. Luscious forgives the general because he's not the type to slaughter a dude who got on his knee's and said he loved his father and mother so just submits. Denzel's character is an ex gladiator who was good enough to buy his freedom and actually gets the better of luscious easily but is thwarted by Maximus's armour, the ultimate plot armour lol. Also I'm pretty sure luscious was aiming for the general with the crossbow and missed.

I disagree about the emperors. They represent the side of royalty that is disconnected from reality. Happened often in history. Also the shorter brother that was always loud was actually mentally challenged. Thats why the one character plays him and makes him do what he did.

7:08 That ring was Maximus' ring, it had his own name inscribed on it Also it was given to Lucius by his mom, it wouldnt be too far fetched to think that the General of this army loyal to Maximus' family, had met Lucius mom at some point, so he would, at least, be aware of the existance of this ring, since his mom wore it 24/7
I didn’t see the movie yet, but I’ve heard other ancient legends where a ring is used to like prove that the person is there on behalf of a king etc. i think even if it feels far fetched to modern people, I think there was plenty of time in human history where things of that sort were valid. 🤷♀️
Dude 1000% Chuck missed this one. If I would have thought of it like he did I would have been with him. There are legit areas where this film moves to fast but this was a bad example.

I agree that Gladiator didn’t need a sequel and I would rather just had a whole seperate story about ancient Rome but this movie was actually pretty good. Not as good as the original but pretty good, even if it copies a lot from the original
It's called type casting. Some actors excel at a specific type of character rather than branching out over a wide range of different roles. No way this is the first time yall have seen it.
Though I believe Gladiator is a standalone film that’s almost perfect in regard. Gladiator 2 was honestly a solid film and with slightly different writing could stand alone. The name Gladiator 2 also holds a lot of weight causing people to compare the two movies more.
@ I meant that I think that people compared the movies so much due to the naming Gladiator 2. If the movie was branded as a sort of spinoff it wouldn’t be getting bashed on as much as it is.
@@ChadBooseyit wouldn't change the fact that the movie just does almost everything the first already did, but far worse. Changing the name wouldn't change that fact.
Yes there’s films being recreated all over but this one is not one of those. Ridley Scott always wanted to make a second one but he couldn’t find the right time for it or something like that. My point is that this is not a case of studio forcing a sequel down our throats like they love to do, but it is instead a project a little more close to heart for the director.
Good review. I enjoyed the movie, thought it was good. It was a decent sequel and played it safe. Ridley Scott, never disappoints giving you an experience rather than just a movie. Plus Paul Mescal is Irish, so am I, so that's nice. I love Gladiator 1. so to who it may concern, Screw you, I like it.
I agree. I see a ton of fans of the original pissed off, but I was never the biggest fan of it. I thought it was a solid, entertaining flick, and that’s how I see this one. Wasn’t a “necessary” sequel, but it doesn’t detract from the original imo
Coming from the Ridley Scott "Alien" to the James Cameron "Aliens" experience, they should've given James Cameron a call to film the sequel, and then name it "Gladiators". That would've been such a hype. Missed opportunity.
When I saw Gladiator 2 back on Thursday night, I can safely say it's not as good as the first one, but I still enjoyed it and it's pretty solid, but still unneeded. However, I'm surprised for the fact it took over 2 decades for Gladiator to get a sequel.
Just saw it like 30 mins before critikal uploaded lol. It's a good enjoyable film, but yeah this wasnt NEEDED; ill prob just see it as a "what if it had a sequel" scenario. Maximus' death and dream of rome only lasting like 15 years was weird.
One big thing to defend about the twin emperors and how we see them; they were that insane. They were always that crazy, and some things follow quite close to what actually happened. They’re meant to represent the excess of Rome and the self interest of the power that is the emperor. Every scene they’re in ends on them because that’s what the emperors of Rome have been doing.
the brothers (not twins) in real life hated each other, but weren't insane. I actually love the idea of two rival co-emperors, which would further the theme of Roman degradation, and if this concept was taken seriously it would have made Macrinus' plan make more sense. Its just frustrating when the actual history is more interesting than the fictional version we get.
The moments when Maximus is dying and returning to his wife and child in the original movie make me cry even 20 odd years later because he is a hero. He is admirable, brave and noble even in victory. It's such a powerful story. Beautifully filmed, acted, written and directed. What arrogance would lead anyone to believe they could tell the same story better?
you do know ridley scott, the director of gladiator, directed gladiator 2 right? if thats not enough, the same producer, writer, cinematographer, and production designer returned for the sequel. and if thats not enough, ridley scott for years had been talking about wanting to make a sequel.
Yeeaa I was about to say wasnt Maximus' wife and son killed in the first movie which was like.. one of the main driving points of his character in the movie lol..
@@Kumatanchiiit's not impossible though given that Maximus and Lucilla had a brief relationship as adults, and we never actually saw or met what was supposedly Lucilla's husband. All we knew was that if he ever existed was already dead by the beginning of the first film. So the choice may annoy some, but it makes sense and isn't entirely impossible.
@MonadoVenom it's not impossible. It is however illogical and improbable when confronted with the character we were shown in gladiator. You can't just substantially change a character (because the implication IS substantial) just because it's possible. It requires far more substantiation and care, particularly with a popular legacy character.
about his mother it wasn't just that he changed his mind, but because she was in danger he did not want to lose somebody close to him even though she hurt him in the past. So i think about that there is an logical explanation
I was hoping that Charlie would plug in Gladiator 2 to the ol' Moist Meter. The sequel obviously is not as great as the original classic starring Russell Crowe. I don't think anyone actually thought that Gladiator 2 was ever going to equal or even surpass the original masterpiece that was Gladiator 1 but Gladiator 2 is still a thrilling & fun epic adventure film with cool fight & battle scenes, a solid sequel to an all-time magnificent Oscar-winning epic. Gladiator 2 is not as brilliant as Gladiator 1 but its still a fun time at the movies. I just wish they hadn't recast Lucius. FUN FACT: Lucius being revealed as Maximus & Lucilla's son was made canon long before Gladiator 2 was even in development, in the pages of the official Gladiator movie novelization book that was released in bookstores when Gladiator 1 originally released in theaters.
Meanwhile HBO Max is sitting in the corner observing their failures. I stopped watching Netflix Originals around the time when peakh blinders ended and they canceled MindHunter, Disney is just Disney, most of the stuff they released is targeted for kids but Xmen-97 was Amazing though. HBO Max on the other hand consistently releases top quality shows. Rome, The Penguin, Industry, Succession, The Wire, Dune, The Leftovers(My personal favorite), the list goes on but you get the point.
And also not all films set in a historical setting SHOULD be 100% historically accurate. It's a movie that's been dramatised, not a documentary. Besides if every film was 100% historically accurate, most would be confusing to a layman audience and/or boring
I wouldn’t say it’s a bad movie, but just another sequel that was neither needed, nor wanted. It’s crazy to see just how creatively bankrupt Hollywood and the “AAA” gaming industry have been over the last decade.
@@alexmaverick6647I guess it also has to do with marketing. Its easier to market a sequel, love it or hate that a sequel exists it will still get people talking. But if it's an original story, it's harder to market a random smuck on his adventures.
No. His whole family was slaughtered. He litteraly said it himself... "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the TRUE emperor, Marcus Aurelius. *Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife.* And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next"
I’m not sure what everyone is complaining about, for someone into history it’s nice to have another Roman film with todays graphics, brings awareness to historical films as well
The reason for that is because the audience only buys tickets for sequels and remakes. They wouldn’t make them if people weren’t watching them in droves.
People: We want more originality! Entertainment industry: *Makes original movies* People: *Doesn’t even see them cause they are based on nothing* This is why the industry wants to make remakes, sequels or reboots instead of something new. The general audience just won’t see them
So I think an example of why live action adaptations keep happening is because it gets people in their 40’s+ (my parents) to watch the shows. My parents wouldn’t ever watch one piece animated but loved the live action, same with death note.
That's quite strange; 40-50 year olds experienced the Disney Renaissance, Bluth films like American Tail and Land Before Time which should've changed their perception of valuable animated storytelling.
this is exactly why, my parents are the same. if i don't personally convince them to watch an animated show, they don't. i guess animated films are still only for kids in the eyes of 40's+ adults, even though the live action remakes are the same if not worse when it comes to story-telling and adult-related themes

@@Y-MAN771 Sir this is a comment section
They really need to start hiring young and inexperienced people. It’s dumb to leave those people out. They are always most innovative.
There’s thousands of good books out there. It seems they are more stupid than out of ideas.

One big thing to defend about the twin emperors and how we see them; they were that insane. They were always that crazy, and some things follow quite close to what actually happened. They’re meant to represent the excess of Rome and the self interest of the power that is the emperor. Every scene they’re in ends on them because that’s what the emperors of Rome have been doing.
nahh don't go the realism route because both emperors existed in real life and were nothing like the ones in the movie
They weren’t that insane. Don’t cash on cheap historical analysis. If anything, you’re relying on Roman propaganda from the time.
the brothers (not twins) in real life hated each other, but weren't insane. I actually love the idea of two rival co-emperors, which would further the theme of Roman degradation, and if this concept was taken seriously it would have made Macrinus' plan make more sense. Its just frustrating when the actual history is more interesting than the fictional version we get.
