In the sequel, the story of the grandmother is explained; she was raped when she was only 10 years old and gets pregnant with Mary. Of course she didn’t like her daughter. She escaped from Mississippi to NY where she ended up being a prostitute, one time she even tried to kill herself with Mary when she tried to jump from a window. I’m not trying to justify the abuse that was given through generations, but to be honest… the mother of the grandmother started it all when she abandoned her and somehow was the cause of the rape, as Toosie (the grandmother) was waiting for her mother to come back when the guy approached and took her to the woods… She even said to Abdul something like “that wouldn’t happened if my mother was taking care of me..”
That adorable little baby saying “thank you, thank you”(instinctually wanting to reassure that gratitude was recognized) while chewing the candy was the only thing I found precious about this scene possibly the whole movie. I can’t believe they somehow managed to find a kid to perfectly resemble the blissful innocence of living in dire straits as a child, what’s insane is how metaphorical this represents the way we deteriorate in moral compass as we grow into adulthood literally regressing by loosing our natural sense of decency and appreciation for the little things in life such as common courtesy just because the world consisting of toxicity and tainted minds poisons our own foundation, yet with time usually old age and humility brings us back down to a graceful state as we were as children all in full circle.

I know this is acting but i hope that precious baby got reassured with great love! This is very realistic trauma and i know it can affect a child. They really played this role because it sent chills from memories. That baby is beautiful!
I think one of the things that is most disturbing about this movie is how real it is at times? How many of us have seen it. And how Monique's character apparently knows how to be gentle and understanding with children (especially a special needs child)--she knows enough to put on an act for the social worker, but yet switches right back to how she really feels/is as soon as the social worker leaves. So it's like, it's not that she just doesn't know how you should treat children--she knows! She just *chooses* to be cruel anyway.
She didn’t do it to protect the child. She did it to correct precious. In theory, she doesn’t care about it the baby are candy off the floor or not. I mean… she called her an animal
@@ArielYasmine I think they meant it was Mo'Nique herself ad libbing to keep the baby from grabbing the candy from Gabourey, given the candy spill wasn't supposed to happen.

*WHY DOES THE GRANDMA KNOW TO TELL MARY TO “LEAVE THAT CHILD ALONE”, BUT WHEN MARY WAS IN THE SOCIAL WORKER OFFICE SCENE AT THE END, SHE CLAIMED THAT THE GRANDMA TOLD HER TO BREASTFEED HER BOYFRIEND BECAUSE IT’S “FOR HYGIENE”???*
When I saw that scene, I personally don't think she meant she literally breastfed her boyfriend to like, feed him. In that scene she said she fed her baby via a bottle, but that her breastmilk also just so happened to not dry up because of her boyfriend having sex with her constantly (& the wording in the book makes this more obvious where she says he's "always on her" by having sex with her). This also takes place in the 80s, and there was an era that people had (incorrectly) thought that breastfeeding was unhygienic and that bottle feeding and/or baby formula was better, so THAT'S what she meant by what she was told was "hygenic". I think narratively its also highlighting how she prioritized her boyfriend over her child. But I also agree with the other comment that this was one of Mary's lame excuses for abusing her child, she's kind of implying that her bad parenting is not her own fault, but the influence of her mother. It IS implied by Mary that her own mother abused her, but that the grandmother is seemingly a better parent to Precious's child than she was to Mary, so that's why she bitterly says "you didn't do much better". Mary is angry about her own mother abusing her & blames her for her own bad parenting, but takes mo responsibility about her abuse of Precious, and in turn the grandmorther doesn't do much to stop Mary abusing Precious OR the babies. Precious is the one to break the cycle of abuse by taking her babies away and being a good mother to them despite everything she went through. But that's just my interpretation.

😂😂😂😂
I heard Mo'nique used to go and really spend time with the little special needs girl (Quisha Powell) who played Precious's daughter after takes. That has to be rough, talking in a way to a child with Down's syndrome like that...but they clearly had a strong rapport considering she calls her by her actual name in the penultimate scene at the social worker's office.
This might be bad but her little rant at the end got me yelling 😂😂😂 “idk what the f* you shakin ya head for” 😂😂😂
Same! I was howling. 😂
I hug my babies so tightly , the thought of children being treated like this 😞😞 and I mean Precious as well 😢😢 to talk to kids that way, you’re building their self worth . Making them go to bed feeling terrible 😞😩
3:32 why they gotta to do the kid like that lmao
Unbelievably powerful scene. Mo’nique killed it, and 100% deserved her Oscar win.
Monique so deserved this Oscar. Hard role to play. It’s the way it is with people on the Dole.
Y’all can’t put comedians on serious acts their too funny for that 😂💯
Right? Alot of Mo'Nique's part was funny
🤣
0:15 😂 gets me Everytime 😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao I hated to admit but me too!
Wow! She really is an amazing actress 👏 ❤️
People acting skills are beyond beautiful ❤️😍
"Hello Ms. Turner, how you doing?" 🤣🤣
I'm glad Mo'Nique ain't like this in real life but great performance 👏 👏 👏👏👏
This movie was sad and deep, but then you watch certain scenes and it’s can be hilarious. The sequel to Push “The Kid” was crazy, precious son smh was a lot.
This scene is the funniest thing ever 😂😂😂
This was a good movie but at the same time I cried the whole time because it looked so real anyone agree 🥺💔😞😭 This movie has a real true meaning some people go through this at home in real life.
you'll monique played the hell out this role. She played it so good, everytime I saw her in another movie or show all I could do was shake my head lol
Many people had a problem with this movie. It's reality (but no one wants to talk about it). Monique did a great job with this character and Precious herself 👍
Monique played her part a LITTLE TOO WELL in this movie😭😭😭😭😭😭
Monique is amazing! Me and her got the same birthday 🎉😊
This is probably the saddest movie in existence.
This is why violence humbles people even if you win or lose you still show to be the one not to f with
After that social worker left that's when the real comedy began LMAO. Get this mutha..come get her 😆😆😆 gotdamn animal 😭😭😭
There are many, many families living and acting like this in America still to this day. A lot of people just want to pretend like it's not normal, but it's extremely common.
This isn't just in the movies, these people are out there! I had an encounter with one the other day. They are SO angry & aggressive.
Incredible performance by both of them from beginning to end. I felt like I was a witness rather than a moviegoer when I watched this movie. Mariah was great, too.
When Monique held her hands down 😂😂😂
