I mean, do we seriously have to agree with anything AniMatt says for his reviews for so called "bad" or "mediocre" animated films? Who cares if they're not like Disney or Pixar or Studio Ghibli? For example, I never grew up with The Pagemaster (I wish I did, though), but I thought it was very imaginative, and it makes me want to pick up a book (even if I have to waist time looking up unfamiliar vocab words in the dictionary).

I think AniMat you were watching the original theatrical version from the 1995 VHS. If you really wanted to get a better first exposure to Gumby through the film, you should have probably watched the Director’s Cut which did try to improve the pacing of the film by shortening the original 90 minute runtime to 76.
But I remember watching the original Gumby shorts in art class and I remember being entertained at the very least.

This movie felt more like so many episodes clotted up into one mess with so many plots & subplots.
    *Pokey searching for Gumby
*Pokey, Goo, and Prickle get smooshed together & go to the hospital to get separated
*Gumby starring in a band (this wouldn't be the first time either)
*Pokey feeling envious towards The Clay Boys because Gumby spent more time with them lately
*Gumby & band team up to save local farms from the Blockheads
*Gumby's dog Lowbelly suddenly having the ability to cry pearls (insert the Savage Garden song "Tears of Pearls" )
*The Blockheads dognapped Lowbelly & tried to make him cry
*Gumby & the Clayboys get kidnapped and have robot clones replacing them
    *Goo gets kidnapped
*Gumby fights his robot duplicate through many books
*A sudden love story between Gumby & Tara
*Gumby & band are assigned to make a music video
*Gumby & Pokey are actually two parts of an alien satellite slab (that looks like the one from "Space Odyssey" )
That is a whole lot to take in!
I may be a Gumby fan, but this movie was more messy than a paintball fight in a mud pit.

To be fair to the series: it was the initial cartoon that held a lot of wonder and creativity, but the character and plots were not meant to be a cinematic experience. It’s ignorant to assume the entire franchise must be a mess, because of its little known film. That would be equal to saying the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises must suck overall then, because they also have 1 or 2 films fans consider tanked. Don’t make a review unless you actually have more context next time. Your research gets more thumbs down than the movie got in 95’ lol

I remember the series since I was a kid and it was good, and it was the first animated series to featured claymation as an experimental tool. Gumby has been a series back in the 1950’s and 1960’s and it was revived in the 1980’s, and it had a slow pace. It was created by Art Clokey where he later created another stop-motion animated series “Davey & Goliath” which was produced for the Lutheran Church of America for churches, and it does contained religious subjects. The location for the entire series was made with toys.

I could not BE a bigger fan of this movie. I love Gumby Adventures and am very familiar with the characters, so lemme give you my take on all of this:
The pacing, animation and acting are not really the problem (though they are definitely painful lol) the problem is with the story.
The lack of definition for the characters is criminal. In the original cartoons there ARE no clayboys, and even though I like them a lot and think they have a lot of potential, the problem is that the main characters get swept to the side for them and the band, even Gumby himself.
The characters have always been simple, but more well-defined in the original stuff. Gumby is a goody-two-shoes boyscout whose edge only shows when he wants to make a difference, or show off. Pokey is a foil to him in that he’s sort of an eyore, negative, lazy and cowardly, but sensitive and careful when Gumby is impulsive. Prickle is a fun-loving, chilled out, emotion-riding dude and Goo is the sweet, tough “mom” of the group lol.
Thing is, they used to be a band all together, no clayboys And don’t get me wrong, they were fucking awful lmao. With the clayboys, Gumby definitely traded up, but in this movie -that- is why Pokey acts so badly, he feels betrayed.
Yet, for some reason, this isn’t the plot? It’s barely mentioned. Like, I am very used to Gumby as a show being insane, slow, nonsensical, pointless plots. But for the movie they should have done better. Not in acting, animation, or even pacing - but in story. Despite the insanity of the franchise they DO have solid characters and dynamics to work with! Those four characters are all well-defined, and yet, they barely make an impact, other than Gumby and his martyr complex making him determined to help the farmers haha.
Don’t get me wrong, I love this movie, the weird pacing and quality make it unique and memorable to me. I love the new characters, the creativity (and by GOD the music is better) but they did miss a big opportunity to give the four main characters chances to shine on the big screen. I don’t at all blame you for finding the main characters boring and flat, they barely make themselves known. At least the sets are cool, and the animation is wonderfully trippy! haha.
Anyway, your review was 100% fair, I really have no complaints or counter-arguments; I fully agree with it all. But as a Gumby fan myself, just thought I’d share my specific perspective. Thanks for even making a video about it! It makes me happy to see people even find any joy in it, stil.
    Sincerely, a true Gumby fan.

I love Gumby, but what bugged me about the movie was introducing the Clayboys Fatbuckle, Thinbuckle and Nobuckle from out of nowhere without any proper introduction to them. Plus, I didn't understand them creating Lowbelly when Gumby already had a dog named Nopey who would always say no.

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin 3 года назад +1

I guess Nopey passed away between the original series and the film. That’s my logical explanation for why Nopey is replaced by Lowbelly.

Wow, it's really a bad stop motion film?
Never I thought we would end up seeing one like ever. For every stop motion film always has the upper quality to never be bad. Other than one made for a specific audience, it honestly makes you feel sorry for it since all the time and patience to be made a bad stop motion film is already wasted.

if you want a good stop motion movie I suggest the French film “a town called panic” it fully understands it’s weird and uses it to its advantage

Ah yes, the “Make a dog cry and become rich” movie of the famous clay icon.
I only remember Gumby from the Screaming Skull episode of MST3K with “Robot Rumpus”
Also, since Gumby (and apparently everyone in this picture) can reconstruct himself, doesn't that beat the point of the blockheads to destroy him with a robot?

I think one of this film’s greatest weaknesses is just how horribly muddled the plot is. It feels more like a compilation of loosely related episodes stapled together with little revision or sense of continuity. So much is happening that it’s impossible to remember what the heart of the story is meant to be. Is it about Gumby and his friends saving a farm from bankruptcy? Is it about Gumby and Pokey trying to fix a rocky patch in their friendship? Is it about the gang’s quest for stardom? Is it about saving Lowbelly? How does one keep up with this massacre of a plot?
Plus, this film is filled with absurd plotholes. Why didn’t the gang just take the Blockheads to the police instead of leaving them in the lab and forcing them to till the field? Where are the stakes in Gumby’s fight against his robot clone when he can just regenerate himself? What was the point of the surgery scene? Since when do the characters get stuck being fused together?
Overall, this movie is a bit of a disappointment to newcomers and fans of Gumby alike. I will say this though, the musical segment at the end, “Take Me Away,” is easily the best part of the movie. The music rocks, the visuals are fantastic, and it’s a perfect representation of what the movie could have been. It deserves a watch by itself, and I will defend that statement no matter what anyone says.

Unlike Animat, I actually did see the television show before I saw this movie. And believe it or not, I actually prefer this movie instead of the television show. The problem is that the episodes were too short; I would expect these stories from theatrical cartoons more than television episodes. And because they were too short, they did not have enough time to tell an actual story. That's what I like about this movie, with more than an hour of screen time, it had an actual story to tell. A concert to save some farms, and two villains stealing pearls? I mean Animat says this is not much of a story, and he says this movie can get slow, but with how bored I got with the television episodes, I honestly did not put my expectations high to begin with. And you know what? I was satisfied with the story I got, especially the rock-and-roll ending. That music was awesome! You know what? This movie is a guilty pleasure to me. I say it's better to have a story that is "too slow" than to have no story at all.

I tend to prefer the earlier 50s/60s Gumby style, the 80s style that the movie uses (especially the weird thing they do to the voices of the main characters) was always a little off for me. The charm is in the imperfection of the clay above all else.

It's sucks!! I actually wanted more Gumby and Pokey's falling out in the state of their friendships. Gumby going off to college by leaving his old friends behind and new friends coming to his life. But since it's a kid movie.. there is no mean spirited tone.

"Can I play outside, mom?" "Did you drink your milk?"
Sorry, when viewing the '50s show, that phrase has been ingrained into my mind. It's like it was made during a time when humor wasn't entirely allowed on children's programming, but bizarre visuals were. (Not really, but it sure feels that way.) Also, Gumby didn't have eyebrows at first.
However, the train that makes its own tracks is a fun idea.
