Pilot Emilie, I loved your class. It was so informative for me since I never had any lessons on flying. I learned about Pitch Up, Pitch Down, Lateral Left and Right, Yawing Veritical and how it is controlled by the Rudder in Tail. Learned about Elevators for Pitching. Pulling back on Throttle while braking and applying the parking brake. Thank you.
This brings back memories of my first lesson. It was at a small uncontrolled field, and the instructor told me to taxi around for a few minutes. A few years later I had a weeklong vacation in the airplane, where I flew a lot and did not drive at all. When I got back I caught myself trying to steer the car out of the parking spot with my feet.
Got my PPL in 1978 and simming for over 3 decades. I think I am going to get the MS2020. Looks really nice for VFR flying. Anyone getting into sims should think about getting a set of rudder pedals. Makes all the difference in the world, especially when working on crosswind landings. Enjoy your videos. One of my favorite sim aircraft I fly in the P3D sim, is the Majestic Q400.
Emilie, I have done four introductory flights but I've never brought it together for me to continue to get the PPL. On one of my intro flights I got a crash course in taxiing because the instructor had a pullover jacket on that he decided to take off while we were on the taxi way. Of course he got tangled up when taking the thing off. I brought the aircraft to a stop and held the brakes while he got it untangled. When he saw that I handled that he asked me if I wanted to try taxiing and I said "sure". He saw that I knew what was needed so he directed me to just short of the runway and he took it from there. There was something about his demeanor that just instilled confidence in me. I would have loved to continued training with him, but my contract expired and I had to move. I get that same vibe from you. I'll bet you were a great instructor! Thanks for these videos. PS. I have a cat that has a white collar, all four white boots, white down his chest, a white dot on his nose and the rest of him is black. His name is Tux.

I just started my PPL a few weeks back and on yesterday's flight I felt really disconnected to the aircraft. Towards the end, my instructor dimmed down the G1000 display so I couldn't see it and wow it made a huge difference. Love the point you made again at the end of your video about looking less at the instruments at first. Going to try the printout method to help memorize how things visually look.

After learning these fundamentals, I hit a wall for a while and just did free flying and sightseeing. And I wasn't interested that much in using airports. THEN. I discovered flight patterns and the importance of them at airports!!!!! And now its so much fun using airports! Planning departures and arrivals that use the patterns is extremely useful and interesting. And my point is, that learning the patterns, for some reason, sparked much more of a passion in me for the sim. And the realistic aspect of it. As opposed to just doing free whatever flying. I'm much more interested in realism now, and the sim is funner that way. Because now I know how to fly around airports appropriately. I loved learning that!
I haven't even finished the video yet and you have already answered so many questions especially how to turn in the air using the peddles and yoke at the same time.

A long time ago, my sister and I got to fly in vintage WW2 planes. Specifically a Boeing Stearman and a T-6. We even got to fly the plane. Of course, the real pilot handled the rudder pedals and ailerons, but we got to hold the stick for a few minutes and just fly level.
This video was perfect for a newbie like myself. I'm just starting to learn about the wonderful world of flight, and this really helped. I'm looking forward to your other new episodes. And yes, Ninja is "so dang cute"! :)
Since my young age, I have always been attracted by the airplanes. Each flight, as passenger of course, was a great excitement. At the end of my high school, I wanted to become a pilot. But my destiny decided otherwise. I became an IT Analyst. I enjoyed combat flight simulator games during my teen age, middle of 1990-s. At that time there were so many interesting titles, like JANE's combat simulation series, Novalogic, and so on. Years had gone, I am too old, I think for the real pilot lessons, but thanks to the technology advancement, we have those realistic flight simulator, moreover, with great RUclips lessons ffrom the real pilots. So, I decided to try myself in flight games once again. Subscribed to the channel, And excited to learn new skills.Who know, maybe for the next life :)
Ninja should have his own channel, called 'Cat in the Cockpit' or 'The Cockpit Cat' or 'Ninja the Co-pilot Cat'. Absolutely loving your videos, very educational, thank you!
An idea: I would love to see a short tutorial about something that is much more common for flight sims rather than real flying: I will start at a random airport of interest and fly around an area for fun but then want to find a nearby place to land and set up at least basic way points and flight plan for that landing. I have pieced together parts of it but keep stumbling. Sort of a 'tips for casual players'. Similarly, figuring out how to use the maps to figure out exactly where you are and what options for landing may be nearby without using external maps or apps (you mention that some craft in the game have better maps but I still feel the need to tab out of the game and find information frequently). I think you could do a great tutorial here, especially as a professional pilot learning flight sims.
If you are flying a big plane you just need a flight plan and you go from point A to B. With general aviation you can find some information on the GPS (start pressing buttons to know they do) ou use the VFR map from the sim. Usually the pilot does some research prior to the flight to know where to land. If you just want to find somewhere close to you in the sims use the VFR map and do a circuit close to the airfield, flying VFR usually are just looking out the window to the runaway and approaching.
I'd say check out P. Gatcomb's videos on VOR approaches and stuff, there's a lot of different tips in those videos talking about how to set up waypoints and stuff mid flight in the GPS systems.
@@Hockeyguy8541 actually check all of his videos. He's quite good explaining things for people (like me) who never had ever been in an airplane as a pilot. The only down point of his channel is no ninja in the videos, but you will get over it.
Back in '96 I did IFR flight practice on my Commodore 64 with SubLOGIC Flight Simulator II. While the graphics were rough and the frame rate choppy when not in IMC, all the procedures, planning, and navigation were exactly the same. Since the nav chart where I live covers the map area of the game, I was able to use real charts and approach plates for everything. The only real thing lacking was total lack of ATC.
Thank you so much for this, this is just what I was looking for, and I found a quality video I can learn a lot from. I'm gonna share this. big like and gj!
Great stuff. Only flown MSFS 2020 for about 14 hours, never used any other sims, done several of the built in tutorials, but this basic attitude stuff is exactly what I need to get better. Plus my joystick is arriving in a couple of days (am crashing and stalling too often with just keyboard and mouse, ouch), so that will help me in applying these absolutely necessary concepts. Thank you Emily! Not all of us are veterans; looking forward to seeing more of your foundation videos.
I ended up watching this video cus I just got an email from Microsoft promoting the flight simulator game wich it really attracted my attention very much, me been a professional class A truck driver for many years I have found this video very helpful even do I don't know anything about flying nor much about planes but I feel like I can learn a lot and little by little how to at least use or play this simulator it might take me forever but I'm pretty sure that I will enjoy it to the max just by having an instructor with lots of patience to explain the basics ( and so attractive too, got to say it ) like you PILOT EMILIE,,, thank you so much for your wonderful smile and attitude 🤗
Ninja is ADORABLE!! I clicked for MSFS 2020 yips and got the added bonus of a gorgeous black kitty. Black cats rule! OK - now I've commented on Ninja I'll watch the video :-)
I always want to comment however my mind can’t choose which thought to express. You are wonderful to look at, brilliant to listen to and fun to be around. More please.
I think your approach to presenting all this is perfect. The language is void of lingo and jargon that some may understand but others not so much. Most of the time when listening to other real pilots, especially the military guys, talk about anything they inevitably use words and phrases that are simple and common to them but not us. You don't insult anyone's intelligence but still keep it all clear and relatable. I also think the pacing is slow enough for everyone to keep up but not beat a particular point to death either. Also, no matter where anyone is at in their experience at flying it never hurts to go back over the basics as taught by someone else because I almost always pick up something new to me or I somehow get a better understanding of something that I thought I had down solid. Single most important lesson in anything is probably "never stop learning". Very well done. I will definitely be checking out your other videos. Oh and I subbed too. ;)
After watching your video I realize that while I have been having some great flights I have been flying backwards - keeping an eye on the instruments to make sure the aircraft is behaving how I want and looking outside for confirmation. Thanks for all the tips to help me unlearn the bad habits I have managed to acquire in the last few weeks!
That telltale Canadian accent creeps out on certain words. I am sure you know the ones lol. Great video. I will definitely be watching more. It shows you were a flight instructor and a good one!
Thanks for the video! I have already done the basic tutorials in game, but watching your explanations in addition really helps. I have actually been taking notes of the different movements/axis and the different attitudes! Well done, will definitely check out the next tutorials
Nice!! Thinking about starting with a flightsim, but knowing nothing about flying I do need a tutorial like this! (Since I am dutch and English is not my native language, Ik like the fact that the quality and pronounciation of the tutorial is good and clear!)
Loved this episode. Thank you! This is exactly what I was hoping for... Starting from the basics/foundation and gradually building from there to "master" flight sim skills and hopefully then taking up real flying lessons at a nearby airport to get basic piloting certification (as a hobby). Again thank you et merci beaucoup! :-)
On large commercial aircraft, such as a 747, the tiller controllers the NOSE GEAR not the rudder. The rudder is ineffective (useless) below circa 80 knots (which changes how you approach the take-off roll). For obvious reasons 80 knots isn't advisable on a taxiway hah. Differential braking also makes more use of reverse thrust on inboard side.
Thanks for doing these lessons. Learning the flight simulator is actually tougher than learning to fly. I lost the ability to obtain my private pilots license in 2004, but was taking lessons a few years prior, was in a 141 program flying a 150 until another student crashed it so jumped into a 172. Since getting my medical would be very difficult now along with the very high cost of lessons, I've set up MS FS 2020 on my home computer and enjoying it a lot. Thanks again for your time and effort to produce these videos. By the way, 4 thirty-two inch monitors with Nvidia graphics and MS FS 2020 is awesome. I actually got a little queezy flying!
Since I know its going to take me a while to afford a setup, I am hoping to hold out long enough for all the bugs to be worked out with the program and VR.
Good morning Emilie! Do you mind sharing what computer hardware you are using to run the FS? I am working on my CFI and after 15 years of zero flying and I am finding myself sometimes struggling to stay on top of the plane. I think a FS will help me rehearse those things at home. What you are showing seems adequate for what I want to do. I don't want to overspend $$$ if am not going to be using the FS as "game". I do not care about fancy clouds or shiny fuselage. I appreciate any feedback. P.S: What are your thoughts on chair flying? Will chair flying help or is the flight simulator 10X better than chair flying. Thank you!
i'm just gonna put this here real quick... I'm 36, I'm a mechanic, I have never even flown as a passenger but I've been watching a lot of videos of people fixing up old planes lately, and thought, hey, it'd be fun to get a flight simulator, i'm not much into games but i have a high power pc and that could be fun.. right? I'm 36 years old and 3:50 into this video and just realized how much flight simulators have changed since 1994. Those of you old enough might understand my shock here LOL. WOW. It looks like a real plane! I guess it would, but wow! I really need to get out from under my rock more LOL!
I liked the video. Good basic instruction is hard to find. I find the hardest part of the flight sim is the flight planning. Especially in Canada as there seem to be fewer online resources. I have seen a lot of videos of people going from point A to point B and they just seem to know what all of the waypoints are going to be. It would be nice to see this level of tutorial on that subject sometime in the future. Keep up the good work.
I am impressed with your positiveness. You inspire future Pilots and keep us entertained ! We are Pilots through you! Those who haven't flown will one day fly because of you .

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. They need to forget their tutorial and just provide a link in the sim to your videos and call it a day.
Great beginners video. My new gaming computer just showed up so will hopefully be online in the next couple days. Live out in the country so might take a day to download 127gb 😀. Can’t wait to start doing some flying. It would be great to have a video on airport traffic patterns and how to transition into the different phases of flight in a Cessna 152 from crosswind, downwind, base, to final. Keep up the great videos.
Emilie, you have the most dazzling blue eyes and a command of ATC that I will probably never have, but I am working on it, starting an RT class next week! Cheers, Marc
We all love Emille, thanks for the tips. Just wish that I had found my love of flight, before now. Now I'm in my twilight years. Keep smiling, keep up the great content and I just hope that you get back in the sky soon.....
Never too late. Most of these sims weren't around when we were younger, and flying itself was out of the reach of many of us. A whole world to explore!
Thx Emilie for your tips ... i enjoy every video here from germany and can say it will help alot, because you walked through such a training and you knows what to teach and how. If we later come to chart reading and such stuff im sure i will learn very much from your tutorial videos. Keep up the good work and take care and healthy. :)
This video is perfect, I can’t wait for this series, I understand the basics of flight sims, but things like VFR, IFR etc are so confusing, so going back to the most basic of basics is perfect, thank you 🙏
Thanks Emilie that was brilliant! Despite lots of years trying to shoot things down in IL2 etc so many basic things I was misunderstanding - from taxiing to staring at the instrument banks constantly. From the tutes in MSFS had no idea of the concepts of the basic attitude and bank settings. Much appreciated.
Hi Emilie, Sooo happy I found you.. flying is a big dream since I was young. I remember sitting in a Cessna with my dad who was hobby piloting, but he had to stop so I missed it a lot. Somehow finally I did other things for living (flutes) and lived my dream paragliding, but still that is not it and hopefully one day I will soar high in the sky. Downloaded MFS yesterday and came across your amazing tutorials so now I have found my flight instructor!! Sooo happy!
In the case of the Xbox you first need to do something about learning the keybinds. The one's posted on line are totally incomplete and significantly incorrect. The only answer is to take a screenshot of them, upload to OneDrive (which is also buggy but can be done from the alternate full list window), download to a PC, format, and print. FYI there are about 140 default keybinds for the 28 buttons and switches on the Xbox controller. Then on a parked airplane, get to know as many as you can handle. Even a few of the ones shown as defaults in the sim are incorrect. As for all the View modes you have to "tough it out" and a keyboard END and INSERT key are a must. The Xbox X version is a little rough around the edges yet in several regards. Add the LB to 6 of the "lockable" camera commands shown together.
Thank you for sharing your substantial knowledge and skills in such an accomplished way. Those of us starting out with MSFS very much appreciate the work you and a few others are putting into these tutorials.
For those who can't spend +600 AUD on peripherals an xbox controller with mouse and keyboard works well enough once you adjust the sensitivity a bit, it's a bit of a delicate operation with the small travel distance of the joysticks but it's workable. I do have a warthog joystick but sometimes you just want to fly around and not lug out a 10kg set of peripherals and find a place for them.
Just what I needed for the winter - glad I discovered this channel Emilie - thanks for this. Love that you're willing to teach, show that you're real with the occasional oops... can't wait to get as half as good.
This will be a massive help to me, I've not yet delved into MSFS2020 but in other games where you fly about in planes I've found myself staring at the altimeter or artificial horizon to work out whether I'm level or not, so having a reference point of roughly what it should look like will definately come in handy. Also even if the topic gets dismissed as "realy simple/easy" its always better to learn to walk before you run, so simple lessons like "these are your axes and here's how to manipulate them" are realy worthwhile
Thank you so much for these videos! I dream of becoming a pilot and I will be hopefully starting flight school soon and so training in Flight Simulator 2020 helps me a ton.
Love this video ❤️ and look forward to the whole series, and more advanced contents like how to check the approach plate, autopilot, ILS, ... all of them 😁😍🤪
GREAT VIDEO you have the basics very well explained. This should be mandatory viewing for everyone tryin to fly a sim On an unrelated note I have to confess I'm a great GA pilot but terrible at taxiing
Really great video, I've never really been interested in flying or being in a flight simulator but will be this weekend, had no idea what to expect, this was awesome!
So glad I found this video. MANY years ago I learned to fly starting with a J Cub with Pontoons then fixed in a 150, then 172 then onto a Cherokee 6. Now that I am retired all these years later my children have gifted me the MS Flight Sim Software, Yoke, Controls and Peddles. Just watching you on basics is such a great refresher. Today is my first time checking out videos about the operation of this system. Your instruction is very simple, relaxed and well thought out. Lots of flashback memories. I look forward to your other videos.
+Pilot Emilie So before watching these, if I watch all 5 lessons will I be able to fly in Microsoft flight simulator? Is this where I should start? I just want to learn to fly on the simulator not in real life.
I just started on Microsoft FSX the other day and could not understand for the life of me why each time I tried rolling the plane had this tendency of pitching upwards and making me basically fall from the sky. Until I just randomly found your channel with this video being my very first and BAM! you just mentioned that VERY same phenomenon for me and explained it so beautifully. Thank you so much. I have just gotten into aviation and was using FSX to test if it's sth I might like. So you just encouraged a young hatchling in the world of GA who may have quit 😂. Liked & subscribed. Can't wait for more tutorials to keep learning! 🤙
Thanks, Captain Emilie! I also have a black cat who's my co-pilot on the C152 in Flight Simulator. :) One small detail, and I hope that no one has already covered it: When you show a definition of a term on the screen, could you leave it up there a little longer? I think that twice the amount of time would be about right. Happy flying!
How do I get started? I have a high end gaming laptop. Don’t want pedals. But I like your joystick/yoke. Interested if there are some high end joysticks too. Good video thanks.

Ninja should have his own channel, called 'Cat in the Cockpit' or 'The Cockpit Cat' or 'Ninja the Co-pilot Cat'. Absolutely loving your videos, very educational, thank you!
Thanks! I'll tell Ninja she has another fan lol
Nevermind flight sim, this is a great refresher ab-initio lesson for when we get out of lockdown and I've forgotten how to fly ;-D
All of your videos are populating first and top of RUclips list.
Congratulations Pilot Emilie!
🎉
The only down point of his channel is no ninja in the videos, but you will get over it.
on the garmin click nrst (nearest) and remeber the top airport. click on the arrow (direct) and input it. Then activate
The only real thing lacking was total lack of ATC.
lol Ninja's a Boss :) looks like one very well cared for chap. Thanks for another interesting upload Emilie :) Stay safe everyone :)
Thank you! You too!
Ninja is a nice looking cat, Domestic black shorthair?? I have one too, it’s a female, she’s 9 and her name is shadow
@@Mavis308 Yes! She's a girl too! :) Cute name
Oh and I subbed too. ;)
Great Video. Flew right over the house :) Good to see the Ninja cat. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks for watching Dave!!
First time viewer. I haven’t started with My pilot training yet. But this lesson was great for me. I have done one intro instructional glight
Rapid channel growth, Pilot Emilie 👍🏻😀Another great video!
Great upload again! Amazing work! Also very happy to see your channel grow fast!
Thanks a ton! We are getting there together!
Hi Emilie, just added a Logitech X56 Hotas to my setup. Looking forward to flying with you on your next group flight.
Thanks Emilie. This is so much better then reading in a book. Oh and by the way, I love your cat.
i'll tell Ninja!
I freakin love your video's as someone new to flight sims. Its a daunting enough task as it it, you make it really chill and fun.
Furiously making new crib sheets !! Another great video - Thanks Emilie !!
Yay! Thank you!

You're very welcome!
Great content! Please dont rush the textual inserts... For a starting non-native reader it takes somewhat more time to read what the text is saying
You're a breath of fresh air, love your style, love the lessons, love your cat.
You start class we all pay attention. You are a certified instructor because you can train on the real deal and or on the sim :)
Agreed...
I know nothing about flying, but your tutorials are great. BTW, love your accent.
Señora Comdante felicitaciones desde Bogotá.. COLOMBIA..!
Ever come to Boston when you were with Encore? Used to be a gate agent there for you guys.
Multiple times yea! :)
Hope you guys get back in the air soon! We definitely miss seeing Encore in BOS
This video is perfect, I can’t wait for this series, I understand the basics of flight sims, but things like VFR, IFR etc are so confusing, so going back to the most basic of basics is perfect, thank you 🙏
Glad you enjoy it Richard!
That's what I needed, a real pilot for FS 2020 instructor. Already subscribed and liked :).
Awesome, thank you!
Sooo happy!
Been looking for a channel like yours. Thank you. Looking forward to go over more of your flight sim content.
Perfect for me. I'm a complete novice, and I watched it from beginning to end.
Not only did you explain this so I understood, I didn't even know any of this was a thing in the first place. Thanks! Can't wait to get msfs going!
Great Video! I just ordered my first flight sim controls and happened to stumble across your videos!
Excellent tutorial!
Even for experienced flight simmers, it is no harm to return to basics sometimes.
Glad to hear that Iain!
Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Would love to see more content like this. Thanks again!
Over 40- years ago I got my SOLO in a 152 Cessna. The new cockpits look soul less but are better of course. Ity seems very slow on take off.
The airport you are showing the taxiing, which one is that? Its looks familiar. Toronto Buttonville maybe?
Yes!
@@Pilotemilie Works in that area for years, drove by often.
Thank you so much for these videos! I dream of becoming a pilot and I will be hopefully starting flight school soon and so training in Flight Simulator 2020 helps me a ton.
Looks like Ninja is itching to get at the controls! Great video.
Love this video ❤️ and look forward to the whole series, and more advanced contents like how to check the approach plate, autopilot, ILS, ... all of them 😁😍🤪
GREAT VIDEO you have the basics very well explained. This should be mandatory viewing for everyone tryin to fly a sim
On an unrelated note I have to confess I'm a great GA pilot but terrible at taxiing
Great, looking forward to the next one! :)
I look forward to your other videos.
great job!! Emilie always good to refresh the basics
Get the flight simulator 2020... Fsx is old and outdated
Thanks, Captain Emilie! I also have a black cat who's my co-pilot on the C152 in Flight Simulator. :)
One small detail, and I hope that no one has already covered it: When you show a definition of a term on the screen, could you leave it up there a little longer? I think that twice the amount of time would be about right.
Happy flying!
You can pause it worse case. Thanks!
How do I get started? I have a high end gaming laptop. Don’t want pedals. But I like your joystick/yoke. Interested if there are some high end joysticks too. Good video thanks.
