Before commenting about the tuning actually watch the tuning section of the video or the comment might look a bit out of place 😂
Also consider the fact the 79 has been tuned ‘higher/harder’ for 10 years which has been bulletproof all that time. 😊
Troopy is ‘not tuned for Rhonda’
It’s tuned to be safe and reliable for proper traveling not the drag strip 😂
awesome vid - could you comment on any pros/cons to the tuning? does it increase fuel, or maybe shorten lifetimes? is there any downside to it?!

The handshake 😂 Russell Coights anyone?
The smile on your face on the straight pipe run says it all! 👍
Thanks for all your content Ronnie
Great to see all the upgrades done properly. Ive done most of these on my 1HD-T 80s and currently the old girl is getting her pump rebuilt n upgraded with new stock injectors then it will be tunned. I was lucky my mechanic has a good old school diesel mechanic/tuner he uses all the time. And spent time asking me what i use it for beforehand. Not sure about the straight through P plater kiddie exhaust....but rest of build was good. Mine has a resonator just leaves my er drums intact.
Great job on the back to back exhaust comparison. Thumbs up for that 👍
Those 4.5's sound awesome with a good exhaust. Music to my ears
Not bad for a V8 Ronny, but still second best to the 1HD-FTE :) Next time you drive down through Geraldton area I'll let you drive my old man Troopy converted from 1HZ to the FTE and I get 172 RWKW's and 600NM's from a relatively standard, and very safe AFR's, Dynomotive plug in tune. I have been running it for 5 or 6 years. I did have to beef up the driveline a fair bit with truck sized drive shafts and 12 stud rear hubs (old 95 series normally has 6) plus a 105 series stronger rear diff and old Ted goes everywhere. Currently on my 9th trip around and through almost all of Oz over the last 10 years. I wish my upgrades would have been sponsored ones haha.
Nice sensible upgrades, just makes it way easier to drive and reliable. Looking forward to the next upgrades
Troopie sounds awesome Ronny👍
Have similar engine mods on my 78, really wakes that vdj up. Have a touring exhaust fitted and that more than sporty enough.
Love the straight pipe sound!
Smile on your face says it all 🤙🏽
I love your plates on your vehicles.
Until Valhalla!!!
I go for valvetronic exhaust system...i can go quiet mood when cruising, and i can go loud mode when i want to have some fun
Sure wouldn't want you living next door at 5am.
Haha well I don’t leave my driveway like I’m climbing a dune
Awesome video
Wow the troopy has changed, looks rad!
Production quality has gone up, I assume your outsourced a team.
Wow. What cost. Normal people can’t afford to do this
Niiiice. Thanks for the content
Yeah sounds crispy the red back do a good exhaust iv got a 3" on my old 1HZ stock as a rock and it hes help a lot with fuel economy and because I am looking at doing a turbo latter on .
would like to see your fit out as you show some pre shots at the end done by Shawn is it ..
I suppose I'm not in my 20's anymore where i don't need a loud vehicle to get attention. I'd much prefer a quiet 4wd on a long trip than listerning to the drone of a loud vehicle.
I don’t get the point of straight pipes anyway, they’re there to get attention. I have a resonator on my 3 inch system and it gives a nice note without being obnoxious
No idea why you'd want a loud exhaust for attention, I'd prefer if it got me no attention, I just like the sound.
Hello there!
Happy Troopy birthday!
I wondering have same completion vehicle my own. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The 79 was (is?) great but the Troopy style has always been my favourite. I willl never own one myself because it is just too high for me to get a dinghy on top but oh boy do I love those vehicles.
This fellas been watching to much Russel Coight. Love it
THANK YOU OTHER GREAT VIDEO AS WISH BEST FAMILY TRIP IN TROOPY
Hi Ronny hay just off topic I see under your driver's seat is a fire extinguisher how have you mounted it to that spot.
Nice episode Ronny. Good to see stuff that works as expected. But can you please include what these items cost, when doing this sort of video.
Did a recent clutch upgrade for a few grand when it turned out to be a broken bracket from pedal to master on my 79….. duoh
As I have said, A safe tune and extra power mods is the best money you can spend. You will feel the benefits every time you drive and the fuel bill will reduce. It is a very expensive mod when you do 'the works' but well worth it. I could never go back to factory power settings.
Marty from Perth
Those A pillar instruments, instant fine in SA last time I checked.
Hey, can i ask where that handy door armrest you're using is from
Well.. if rings gap was enought for ten years with that power in the 79… shuld be in the troopy too. More compresed air… more power… more dilatation… most tuned engines die because of abusing of all that power for too long periods of time. Sounds and performs incredible. Enjoi it!!! 👍🚜💨💨💨
Excellent mate! When is the suspension upgrade coming?
If you’re happy, you’re happy and that’s all that matters with remaps.
Come and do a Africa trip! Will be great content!
I can do all that in my landcruiser in it’s standard form no problem
Something I would like you to try Ronnie is the difference in torque from a normal driving standard start (like taking off from a set of traffic lights) between the muffler, resonator and straight pipe. The difference is quite noticeable on my 4.2 GU. My driveway is a slight uphill and the straight through muffler allows me to just let the clutch out at idle and crawl up it. The straight through pipe means it stalls every time. I have to give it more accelerator and ride the clutch a tad just to get it to move. Made a big difference in slow technical 4wding to the point that I always use the muffler. I’m wondering if it can be measured on a dyno. This is something that would only really effect manual vehicles as the torque converter in an auto would get the torque going earlier anyway.
Rubbish
Hi guys can someone please let me know which insurers to get my modified pop top 1999 Troopie insured with all the caravan interior please.
Currently with RAC and they won’t insure the xtras
I have a Toyota, which has stock 1GD engine, but the nearest PDP shop is 8000 kms away 😢. Can't get it tuned
Great into 😂
Don't know how reliable until a few thousand km.
Lot´s of torque down low is pretty much the opposite of "reliable".
Because: It is physics.
1 .Higher RPM means a higher oilpressure = less stress on the bearings.
2. The slower the engine turns (low rpm) the more time the rod needs to hold in its weakest point.
So if you want a diesel engine to be reliable move the torque to higher rpm!
With a good engine mngt software you can limit torque in the lower rpm and let it grow from 3k rpm or so.
Edit:
after I saw the video: A "reliable" power curve is exactly what Toyota did as standard. Of course does the new make more fun but the saver one is the standard.
@least you keep heat under control, which is obviously key for every engine.
So whats the legalities with an aftermarket piggyback ecu and modified tune?
This tuned has the same torque at the rear wheels as a 200 series does at all wheels standard according to my dyno results.
How much will this cost for the average person?
Hi Rinny - Can you do a 79 - how its holding up ?
👍
Another infomercial by Ronny
instead of a 17 minute commercial to get free stuff can you talk about the pros and cons? costs? extra fuel consumption? horror story's of blown engines? chips vs flash? ya know... useful info
Pritty sure he did this with the 79ute When it went in being the same engine
I’ve done that a few times already mate, this is about getting the troopy to drive better with only a mild 30% overall increase and big changes where it matters at 2000ish rpm
Fuel consumption/range, price. Thanks
Are the clutch parts compatible with OEM? For when it breaks in the middle of nowhere.
oem clutches are shite and whos doing a clutch on their car in the middle of nowhere
@@darcykeddell4930 What I mean is small town repair shops aren't going to stock custom parts. Just like the tires I put on my rigs I can get almost anywhere.
@@slamboy66 clutch disk and pressure plate are the only non standard things so that's no worries
R/D. Probably 150kW/201Hp is all one needs with the resonator exhaust sir ! ! When or what is going to replace the hand brake optionwise in da future ? V.
Nice ad for PDP. One for the yobbos with too much money I think.
Ronny has never owned a 253 and it shows.
Sorry but the 1vd isn't a great sounding motor I'd have tried to make it quieter not louder
We all have a different taste in music 😁
What's that, 40hp gain from custom tuning on a dyno?
Troopy is a Troopy and not a big block Mustang .... struth... sounds great though 👌
That's why he did a really modest tune, he could have gotten way more power bro, it's.not a mustang your right
Ronny do you have a video of what you'd imagine the best truck for overlanding would be if money was no object
Oshkosh the 1s the military replaced the hummers with
@@bingysbackyard Civilian's can buy those?
What’s all that cost to get done for the average joe?
1:12 lmao
Well, ever heard of tread lightly? How about tread quietly? Always good to have more reliable power, but If my vehicle sounded like that, I’d head to the exhaust shop to get some silencers fitted, cos I’m not seventeen.
Yep. I’m constantly getting blokes go past me in my standard troopy and they are trying to impress me with the roar of their engine. I prefer my quiet roar to booster rockets.
😂😂
eh, i think ronnie knows that
had a v8 cruiser for a decade now
hes just having some fun with this new build i reckon
My 1979 Peugeot automatique sounded like that when the rusted exhaust fell off.
You do you boo
Where do i find a decent used rig...id like to come tour down under for 3 or 4 months at a time...thx tomk fdny usa🤠🤓😎✌
Forgive me if I skipped past this but I'm guessing your EGT sensor is post turbo?
Obviously, pre turbo is the intake side lol
@@curtis4925delete quickly before they see your response..... 😂😂😂
@@curtis4925 No mate, go back to school. You can install the EGT sensor either in the exhaust manifold (ie: before the turbo) or in the downpipe after the turbo exhaust outlet. In general you see about a 100 C drop in EGT after the turbo vs. before it.
EGT probe should be pre turbo peoples, Pre Turbo!
Hi Ronny did it increase fuel use?
Still crunching numbers
Why is the bonnet off on the Dyno run, this makes it unrealistic. You don’t drive around the bush or highway with the bonnet off🤦🏼♂️
That’s terrific but how much has she reduced the lifespan of the donk?!?
Next weakest part = drive shaft.
Lol no.
That is plain bloody stupid. You will break it.
Whys it stupid?
You’re broken
I wonder why Toyota don’t tune it like you did? (Do they know something we dont!) capable of so much, yet we are given so little. Must be reliability related 🤔
that sound is adictive.....
How much more fuel will it use? More power equals using more fuel doesn’t it?
Depends how it’s driven, I’ll get the numbers over the next few long runs and compare
If you drive well, it actually lowers the fuel consumption because you don't have to rev as much to achieve the same result.
Unnnnncccclllleeeee ronnnnnnnnnnyyyy
if you're gonna use the word "reliability" I'd only go a tune you can flick back to standard if your temps go hot in the bush for one of 20 reasons
having 60% power gains won't help if you're doing 20kph on a track and you're exhaust gas temps are trying to melt your piston
we have all heard tunes that have fucked stuff up
will these tuners put in writing they guarantee it won't turn to shit?,
didn't think so
That was 3, still working on the other 17 reasons?😂
Sorry, couldn't help myself
It’s a very mild tune mate 😂 it’s only 30% gains overall but 80% where it matters
If it’s a “reliable & safe” tune. Why don’t Toyota tune them like that?
Cost effectiveness for Toyota
528nm you need a new tuner
Attention to detail. The correct spelling is Clutch NOT Cluch.
Mate, if your hear four the spelling, you’ve got the rong channel
@@jamiefay3028 I am not here for the spelling because it would be a lost cause. But a. I couldn't resist especially since it was in a more obvious place than some mistakes and b. if something major like this is misspelled it makes you wonder what other mistakes he might have/be making with other conclusions and recommendations.
Not enough torque in the world to get Ronny to camp in daylight.
Aussies, stay chooned.
Please do a survey to see how many people in Australia actually drive on sand?
Millions of us drive on sand at some time. I don't understand this comment 😮 Maybe it was written by Wayne Kerr.
Sand driving is an essential and inevitable part of overlanding, especially in WA. You a mall-crawler @iVisual.sambonkowski
If Ronnie did a poll, only his subscribers will see it, it wont go to the general public.
Thus is a WA based 4x4/exploration channel, sadly for your therory, at least 95% of Ronnie's viewers would tick the, fark yes I drive on sand button.
If you asked this question on a caravan/touring channel, you might get closer to a 50/50
What kind of self respecting 4x4 enthusiast is to scared to drive down a beach? Or up a gentle sand dune?
General public shure maby less 10% regularly drive on sand, but in the 4x4 community sand driving is entry level, basically right of passage.😂
@@jarradblair1793💯%
@@jarradblair1793 Ronnie's subscribers are around 0.2% of Australian. even if 100% of Ronnie's subscribers drive on Sand (which is very very very unlikely), its still 0.2% of Australian.., which is why I asked the question: "Please do a survey to see how many people in Australia actually drive on sand?" the % of people driving on sand is minuscule.
😂 did you say it's a V8 with only 528Nm after a full tune 😂 i have seen 4 cylinders with more power😂 my Tdv8 straight out of factory is 700Nm like a V8 should be, its aĺ about Nm when in the soft sand😮
Your Tdv8 doesn't have 700Nm at the wheels
His 78 would have around 700nm at the flywheel, your going off the flywheel not the wheels mate, yours probably has simailar specs at the wheels
Sounds like wet ass. Not sure whether because in post processing you over amplified the crap out of it or because it’s a vdj v8.
Obviously 😂
Well done! I enjoyed the video.
Some negative Suzuki drivers in the comments.
tuning a vehicle like this = unreliability. the vehicle wasn't designed to be run like this
don’t know a single well done vdj that’s been damaged from a tune, only dodgy flash tunes or neglected maintenance.
Its only 528nm Its nothing
Is there a Catalytic Converter I that exhaust? You wouldnt have removed it would you...
Diesel land cruiser with a catalytic convertvor?😂
You mean a dpf right?
1 a traditional platinum filter style cat will not work with a diesel engine, they don't get hot enough to burn off the soot.
2 Ronnie's troopy is an older pre dpf model, legaly he cam run a strait pipe, no mufflers, no dpf
3 it's hard to remove somthing that was never there.....😂
@@jarradblair1793 I meant cat. And it would've had a cat from factory...it's not that old
@@jamesriley7604 a traditional "cat" will not work with a diesel motor. The exhaust gasses do not get hot enough for the platinum to react to the carbon monoxide, also they fill completly with soot.
There is a dox filter that kind works but 70series was exempt from it being a commercial vehicle.
A Dpf is litteraly the newer diesel version but it was not legaly mandated in new vehicles until 2017, i beleive Ronnie's troopy is a 2015 model
Edited, goddanm I had some terrible spelling mistakes in there
@@jarradblair1793 I am not reffering to DPFs at all...I'm talking about the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst). They've been on Diesel engines since the mid 90s. It's not a filter, it's a Cat. Either way, I'm pretty sure there would've been one (possibly two, on a V8) in the exhaust of a 2015 vehicle. I was just joking that Ronnie wouldn't have had them removed (illegally) given a previous video he made regarding the illegal removal of DPFs
Goddamn these engines really sound horrible.
To all the basement dwelling keyboard warriors: Ronny I know, Travis I know, ASPW I know... but who are you?
This week on rd channel: how to lose all credibility with one video
Well done
I guess you didn’t watch the tuning part 😁
How very unnecessary. Wishful thinking. You going against your own advice.
Whys it unnecessary?
Against my own advice? How it’s a milder tune than the 79. I’m guessing you didn’t watch the tuning part
Isnt that thing a toyota. I hate toyotas. Working on them anyways.
Wish I could add a turbo to my 78 series, but doubt my budget can do it😢 lol
