I live near Boston. The first thing I noticed was one of the first missions, when you go to the Park St. Station. I worked at the exact spot for years, selling fried dough and slush outside the entrance to the park st station. The game nailed it right down to the graffiti and cracks in the side walk. Excellent job on the backgrounds.

Btw, the statue by the bridge in game isn't the one from the old north bridge in real life. The two statues don't match but could easily be confused. The reason why it's on the opposite side of the bridge is because it is to represent the statue in a near by town irl called lexington. The statue irl, is for Captain John Parker and the statues match exactly. Like for others to see.

The detail/design was close enough to the real Boston that I could navigate in the game just fine. Scale was different, of course, but I was impressed how close it was! @@CC-kj4yc History is about people, not land. And people carry their history and culture with them when they move. American history isn't the continuation of Native American history, it's just what eradicated and supplanted it. If you are American, there is an extremely good chance your ties to, say, Apache or Cree culture are exactly as great as that of a random Indian or Chinese or Norwegian person.
More importantly, those cultures didn't leave a whole lot of observable, every-day traces behind. It's not like downtown Manhattan is dotted with 1000- to 2000-year old native American buildings and monuments, or that American English has 25% Iroquoian loanwords, or that Native American art and literature are brought up as anything but "theirs", not "ours".
The US is a young nation with a young history, compared to many European nations. That is just how it is.

Yes, the first shots were fired at daybreak in Lexington, the militia had been warned of the British forces planned march from Boston to the Concord to confiscate munition stores. Paul Revere and Samuel Prescott made their famous ride the night before to warn the militia of the impending British arrival and for the munitions to be moved, they told the militias a warning would be given in the old north church tower of a candle light, "one if by land two if by sea". On the morning of April 19th, 1775 the British began there march and a small detachment of Miltitia fired on British regulars at Lexington, outnumbered and outgunned they would fall back quickly without a real fight and the British regulars would continue their march toward Concord, later that morning at the old North Bridge outside of Concord beside sanctuary, a force of 400 militia would fire the shot heard round the world on a small detachment of 100 British regulars attempting to cross the bridge starting what could be considered the first real battle, with casualties on both sides, outnumbered and stunned the British detachment would fall back to Concord to rejoin the larger force of British regulars. With word of the battle and because of the sound of the gun shots militia began to flock to Concord and the British forces while larger in number and better equipped found themselves surrounded and could not see many of the militia forces who were hidden amongst the trees along side the road, the British forces began to retreat back to Boston under heavy gun fire from forces the could not see or identify since many of the militia lacked uniforms and were simply dressed like farmers and towns people. Reinforcements would arrive to help the British regulars once back in Lexington but stunned and unprepared for the Militia defient stand they were only able to hold them off and retreat to Boston, giving the unlikely Mass. Militiamen and unexpected victory in the first battle of the revolutionary war. It would set the precedent for the kind of guerilla war to be fought, one that many of the British regulars were unaccustomed to compared to the militiamen many of whom were veterans of the French and Indians wars.

I used to work at that National Park! The NPS spent a lot of money buying up the land around there - it took 'em like five or six decades, but they managed to basically restore the area to how it (more or less) looked in 1775 (though the area around the North Bridge is closer to 1830 or so.) I'd imagine that, in the Fallout universe, they cared a bit less about historical preservation, hence the nearby housing development and vault in the game. But yeah - it was crazy playing the opening level and realizing "Oh my god, one of the biggest storytelling moments in all of video gaming *basically* took place at my old job!" I would have loved to have started my tours with "Welcome to Minute Man National Park - or, as some of you know it, Sanctuary City..."
The geography of downtown Concord doesn't quite shake out, but - designwise - it looks a LOT like it.

    • @sycoraxrock

And yeah - one of the first things I realized was that - in the Fallout universe - apparently Capt. Parker marched his militia to Concord instead of Lexington?

That was probably a stellar experience for you ESO, feel do I.
A couple things to note that the "pre-war" video is set in 2077. That is almost sixty years into our future. The game could be considered like Nostradamus in the future, for all we know. Six decades can see a LOT of changes to an area.
You remarked that it was a "historical landmark" and thus open to the public. That means U.S. Law would have been fine with Bethesda digitizing the entire park down to each blade of grass... so long as they had permits and such to operate any equipment they needed to use in the area. But the "design" of the area is far from privatized. Being a public park makes it one of the most open areas that exist in America.
Them placing the minuteman statue outside of the estates area is probably to help players from assuming they 'had' to be a part of the minuteman. I mean if it was right in front of my character's house? It already is a big emotional impact with it being right across the bridge, but putting it in front of Nate's house... that would have been next level.
As for the possibility in our timeline of a Sanctuary Hills 'Estates' even existing, it is certainly plausible, believe do I. The government is privatizing "public" lands constantly. They probably would avoid touching the minuteman monument but the entire field of grass around it is abundantly fair game to a politician's mind, think do I.

As someone who grew up a town over from Boston, fallout 4 has always been near and dear to my heart. I used to go to parks in concord, walk around in Boston, lived in Worcester, and it honestly looks so much like the game. Winter time (without snow) in Massachusetts is so freaky because it really does feel like the wasteland. Some of us here actually call Massachusetts the commonwealth so playing fallout 4 is just weird sometimes. Looking around in the game I'm always like "I've been there! Oh hey that looks familiar!" Also Great video!
Edit: the quote "Fired the shot heard around the world" not only was about it starting the American Revolutionary War, but other revolutionary wars too. As someone who grew up in a town where many battles where fought and where Paul reviere ran through, i am a huge history enthusiast (specifically American history and focusing on the revolutionary war). The battle of concord (and also Lexington) showed the world that we meant business and inspired people like the French, Mexicans, etc to fight their own wars for freedom.

A little thought to not ruin the lore, you have to remember that Fallout 4 is set in the fifties. I mean yes, the 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 is "2077", but the storyline is set in the fifties. So to stay lore-friendly, you could just imagine that they; completely remodeled Sanctuary Hills itself; expanded concord; took down the big old clunky pylons, and replaced them with a more modern, eco-friendly alternative; etc., etc., etc.

Living in Massachusetts (Central Mass to be specific) I can say with honesty that the environmental designers to the world did a supreme job of it creating the world. Where I live is a LOT of hills and peaks etc but as you go further out east towards Boston and the area it slowly declines and gives way to a more valley, lake looking environment. The neighborhoods were flawless in design and exploring the outskirts was genuinely my favorite part because I have been to most if not all of these locations and it's just so cool to see how accurately portrayed they were.

In our world Sanctuary was preserved as a historical land mark. In the Fallout timeline a lot has happened. War, lack of resources, exc. If you actually explore Sanctuary a bit you will notice that it seems some of the buildings are newer constructions. I would say that the town of Sanctuary was built alongside the Vault. Historical landmarks removed, or out right replaced. As families moved into the town, Vault Tec would pick the best ones suited for their experiments. Keep them close at hand for when the war starts.
