The 9-5 thing is so helpful! In biomedical science at my uni this happens a lot where some days are 8 hours of lectures/labs and others 5 or 6, with an ever-changing timetable, so it can be overwhelming to plan the same amount of stuff to do every day. Plus extracurriculars in the evening…Treating it as 7am to 7pm will definitely help my sleep, instead of promising myself to get up early and still going to sleep at 1 am 😬
Thanks Zach!! GREAT VIDEO! TREATING STUDYING LIKE A JOB with no distractions is indeed a key to getting a lot done. I used to put my phone on airplane mode when I was writing my PhD dissertation. The Mark Twain frog quote is also SO GOOD! 🐸🐸🐸 Getting the sucky stuff done first also provides a boost of accomplishment for the rest of the day. And all that medical studying has paid off Zach, Toxic Biomolecule Accumulation, haha. I definitely had to Google that 🤓😅
I cannot agree more- 2nd year into PhD and i study throughout the day with multiple breaks and end up feeling exhausted without no outdoor activities. This strategy looks nice, will try this 7-5 model for next 1 week. Thanks
My final exam in med school is after one month , and I was really worried and have this bad time organized issues I watched your videos and today I started to focus and do much better, Thank you , and I hope you get more successful too , big support from me 💪
12:10 Absolutely!! I bought another floor lamp with 3 lightbulbs to put in my apartment to add that extra light for days I have to be more alert. So much easier to stay awake when it’s super bright vs the normal dimmed light.
Thanks a lot for this Zach!! I could truly relate to this study method. I honestly think though that you do not always eat the frog first especially during tests or exam, it would most likely take a large chunk of your time. Continue being an inspiration!
"Do the worst thing first" - will def incorporate that from now on! I avoided an anatomy lecture while studying and now I have a few hours before my test and still dread going over it... should've gotten it out of the way first
A lone yacht sailed across the barren ocean, gracefully waved the seagull at the horizon. The last scenery is really very inspiring, and I feel touch by your medical lifestyle and wise choices with much determination. Yeah!
The best advice I could get was "treat it like a. 9-5". When I studied for the DAT, I started at 10AM - 6PM with lunch breaks in between and using Pomodoro videos! My evenings are for relaxing. That strategy worked GREAT!
One thing that was life changing for me was changing my environment. I just can’t focus at home. When I go to the coffee shop I can work for hours, full focus and efficiency.
This boss and workday idea is actually genius. Med student from the UK here, your videos are actually amazing, especially all the anki ones. Keep it up 😁
Believe it or not, my medical student's life become easier since I subscribed your video, Zach. Thank you so much! Good luck for Zach, for me, and for all of us :)
I liked the detail of the sources when mentioned on the video. Thank you for your quality work, I haven't been able apply them completely but I've haven't given up, it helped me improve my performance on med school.
I’ve graduated college and still want to learn to handle multiple things at once and focus for long periods of time. Subscribed to your channel, hopefully I can learn some things!
Wow the treating studying like a work day as well as the eat the frog, are really great advice, thank you! I am going to try to implement them in my own life
Thanks Zach! Would love to see that Notion tutorial video rolling out soon! I just downloaded Notion last night and was pretty overwhelmed with just how much there is to do with it and didn't even know where to start...pretty much the same as how I felt when I first started using Anki 😂
Great vid as always Zach!! I'll definitely use these tips for postgrad exams! I really struggled with focus in med school - lectures especially, I'd just fidget and play with my phone 😂 But I was much better when revising at home, I'd set a time to revise then stop. Also making time to tidy my desk space and remove distractions is always time well invested. And if I'm tired? Chill out and take a break! Watch some Avatar the Last Airbender! At work, I'm currently trying to improve my focus and productivity by making a personalised jobs list in Microsoft Word that works with my system, so I get the most urgent patient jobs done ASAP. It's so much easier to get things done when you set out what you're going to do from the start! 🙌🔥
Thank you so much. I like how you refer to experiment too. I have tried doing worst thing first and it really works for me. I do the difficult work more effectively in the morning and feel relaxing doing easier work at night. I’ll try Pomodoro later☺️
Tip for people with ADHD: Eat the icecream first, then the frog. Find a small productive task that motivates/captivates you to get that initial momentum going into the bigger unpleasant one.
This is so helpful Zach! I love studying with your videos in the background. It helps me study better and keeps distractions away knowing someone else is studying with you.
The boss thing is my way of thinking too lol. It works if you think someone is waiting for you to finish your task or something like that, to give response to someone
Keeping your lights on or keeping a specific light on when you study also condition you to study. So you learn to study when the lights on so you have a feeling to study when the light is on and keeps you focused to studying. Personally I use led lights. When I want to study I turn it on and change its color to green.
Such helpful strategies for optimizing your study time. Also kind of mind-blown about the tip to keep the lights on while working, something I'll have to try out!💡
Thanks Zach, I am struggling with focusing. After all your tips I'm going to start with the small necessary changes, then build on gradually. FYI: you have gorgeous eyes 👀
Zach: studies from journals, Mark Twain quotes, etc Also Zach: "Also who wants pages of math hanging over their head when they want to go outside and hit the brother with sticks? Not me." A legend😂
I really wanna try the 9 - 5 one. At the moment I sometimes struggle to get my work done, having an extremely chaotic timetable that changes weekly at my uni. It feels wrong to not study after uni, but after 8 hours of lectures etc it might actually help concentrate the next day. Cause I do have shorter days and then mess up with my studying. I've implemented the scheduled breaks a few times successfully. Sooo... trying to build a good routine here and your video might actually help a lot.
Literally to the 1% who's reading this, God bless you, and may your dreams come true, stay safe and have a wonderful day.✨
I see you and I send you love and good energy 🤍💪🏻
Oombu
Thank you, God bless you too🙏🏾
Thank you, God bless you too and everyone
Me, the 2% 🥲
0:25 Treat like 9-5
2:47 Do the worst first
5:00 Remove distractions
8:39 Take breaks
12:10 Keep the lights on
❤❤❤
STOP invading my mind Zach! This was egg-exactly what my mind was struggling with today!!
Your mind is so comfy though, and I did find a chicken...

“An annoying cushion” 5:42 that made me laugh!! I never thought of a cushion as a distraction before 😆

I think it’s important to take day by day, each day is a new day. If you done it yesterday, you can do it again today.
I love your sense of humor. Thanks for the great tips!
This makes a lot sense for me, thanks Zach. I've got exams in 1.5 months
