- Part 2. In this video I remove and disassemble the front forks to inspect and change the fork oil. Come along with me as I do this job for my first time. I am hoping to find something that is causing my bike to wonder at or above 75mph. Thanks for watching and please, like, subscribe and leave me a comment.

I just changed my own fork oil (‘95 gl1500SE) for the 1st time. Didn’t have a video, so appreciated seeing you do yours. I chose not to remove the tubes, just drained via lower drain plugs & removed the Schrader valves topside for filling & sucking out excess via same method. However, understand you wanting a closer look inside w/that wondering situation. I have an annoying low speed resonance/vibration that’s developed when riding only 1-up on mine. Chasing these minor irritations can be frustrating, for sure. Enjoying the mechanics on your 1500 Goldwing!
Hello, I’m glad you got your fork oil changed too and that your method worked out well for you. Sometimes those little problems like your having can be so annoying, my problem is too but if I keep it under 75mph I don’t have any issues. I just want to find and fix my little issue, as I’m sure you do too. Thank you!
Thank you so much for your video it helps so much I’ve got a 97 that needs new oil seals in the front forks and this will help a lot thank you
@@allenraby2988 your welcome, I’m glad the video was useful 👍🏻
Nice job, that old fork oil certainly looked contaminated and dirty. Assume that oil technology has moved on since your Goldwing was filled with fork oil at the factory. Hope the weather stays decent so that you can ride the bike and report back as to how it handles. Ride safe Sir.
Thank you Michael! I’m hoping it makes a difference, I will report back. Thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Thanks for all you do for us! That fork oil did need changing and I always appreciate seeing any other perspective on how to accomplish any task!
I will comment on what I have noticed at higher speeds (90 - 110) on shaft driven bikes. I have always noticed what I call a high speed “weave” and the bikes seems to get “ light and up on its toes “. This is a slow weave, but is definitely a major clue (for me) the bike has reached its aerodynamic and structural limitations😮. Our bikes are way different aerodynamically than smaller bikes or even cars 🚗, so stuff happens. I never considered fork oil as helping this weaving. 🤔. You keep up the GREAT work you’re doing as I’m loving it!
Thank you Mark! Yes I’ve thought about it being a naturally occurring thing with all the bags and fairings throwing the wind around but I’m Honda did a bunch of testing with the wind on the bike before releasing it for sale. So when it was brand new I’m assuming that it would not have a problem at any speed therefore I assume that something has changed/ gotten weaker. I’m thinking that after so many miles of bumps that the springs in the front forks have weakened a bit, and in my case having old oil that was low on the level was adding to the problem. I believe 2 things that I have done that have reduced the problem by 50 percent was adding the fork brace and putting 5lbs of air in the forks. Previously I was running with zero air in them. I’m hoping after the oil change it will be all better. Thank you so much for the encouragement, and thanks for the comment I appreciate it!
Nice how to video, I appreciate you doing this in depth, thanks!
Thank you! Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it!
I'm interested in the tool you used for checking oil depth. The plugger looks like what i have for bleeding master cylinder
I have a link to the tool in my description to the video but it's this one amzn.to/3AZrxN2
Thank you for sharing
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
The big question with the Fork brace and oil change does it ride better. I have progressive springs in my.
@@michaelboater3545 It absolutely made a difference, is it perfect, no. I think progressive springs is the only way to totally eliminate the front end weave. You made the right choice. A couple of hundred dollars is a wise investment in my book. Thanks
Thanks

I have a 1993 GL1500SE that needs both front forks rebuilt. I just watched GolwingDocs and they stressed on using a fork/spring compression tool. I’ve seen a guy that made a compression tool because buying one cost too much. GoldwingDocs says the caps are under tremendous pressure. I see how you removed the caps on your forks and it looked like there was very little pressure. I’d love to use your simple method but I’m concerned about what GoldwingDocs says about the spring pressure. By the way, I’m going to replace the fork caps, seal and bushing. And about 2 years ago, I replaced the fork bearings so I’m familiar with tearing down & assembly of the front end. Any tips or suggestions or advice?
I have also heard that about the tremendous pressure on the springs and my service manual even calls for a special tool to be used. I’m not sure why mine wasn’t under that kind of pressure, I was actually ready for it to explode from the pressure. Everything looks to be normal in my forks so I’m just not sure what to say. Everything works great in the front end now that’s it’s done so I’m happy with it. Yours being an se might be a little different but I just can’t imagine it being under any extra pressure. I don’t really have any advice other than what I’ve shown in the video. I hope yours goes well and if you encounter something different please let me know and I will share it with others on my channel. Good luck with everything!
Your forks have the shrader valves on the caps like mine so it should be the same…I hope. I’ll look at the RUclips video again where the guy made that tool I mentioned. I will let you know how it goes when I finish the job. Thanks for your reply
@@Lonzo_Gonzo1955 okay, thank you
Nice job!
Thank you!
Why aren't you on PBS?
You make me blush : ) Nobody wants a boring guy like me on PBS, but I appreciate the thought all the same : )
…BTW, my 1500 forks only took roughly 10.5oz or so also(?).
That’s interesting, thank you for the information. 👍🏻

Thank You Jim! 👍🏻
Suprised a three ton floor jack would pick it up........
Just a joke hold the torches and pitch forks
I know, but my 4 ton jack was being used holding up my bicycle 😂😜
