Named after the British fighter jet, the ThorpyFX Electric Lightning is a Drive/Boost designed to help Chris Buck achieve his supersonic signature tones, no matter the backline!
The Electric Lightning is Thorpy’s first foray into valve (tube) based pedals. It starts with a high headroom overdrive circuit running on a dedicated 12v power supply. Softer attack or changes in your guitar volume instantly clean up and the Drive’s powerful 3-band EQ is key in adapting to any rig, whether solid state or tube.
The other component to this custom design is a high headroom Clean Boost that is placed before the Drive. This Boost can be used independently but it proves to be essential in taking the drive into high gain, singing sustain territory. And to make sure those Chris Buck lead tones stay tight and defined, the boost has a pre-gain Lows control like we’ve seen in other ThorpyFX designs.
The Electric Lightning is designed and built with great attention in the UK using high quality components and the near-bomb proof enclosure we all know is a sure fit for this fully featured 12ax7-loaded overdrive. Checkout ThorpyFX.com for more info!

Still my favourite guitarist to watch on RUclips.
I really appreciate it!
Agreed whole heartedly. Yet, this was the WORST tone I've ever heard from him reviewing anything. He made a Bosss DS1 sound better. Also, I'm a Chris Buck fan, and seen Cardinal Black live.
My girlfriend hates it when I watch AndyDemos videos at 9:30 PM because they get me psyched to jam for the next 3 hours.
Keep ‘em coming!
Chris must be over the moon! I love that you conjured different glorious tones from this than he did.
Ok we are all ready for the Andy pedal, come on
I immediately decided to buy one…thinking it would be 300ish…quickly closed the tab after seeing the price. There’s no way! It’s pretty unique and I suspect may end up being a pedal that appreciates in value.
I said screw it and bought 1😂
@@dustinarnold79 please report back after using it. I would love to hear a mortals opinion after taking it around the block…jumping it off a a few ramps and what not.
5:58 neck pick up is the bomb!
Pedal sounds fantastic by: arguably The Best "Demo-person" in the history of effect pedals. Andy Demo's are always Killer. Andy's been top-notch since the PGS days. oNe LovE from NYC
Honestly you need to listen again.. it sounds totally digital and I'm totally surprised. Gonna check out some other videos
@@jimmyoandrhondalee7431what exactly about an all analog/tube pedal sounds digital? The cellphone you’re listening to it on? WTF you goin’ on about?
Pushed tones with the Les Paul sound so good!
The aircraft on the pedal is the English Electric Lighting. A very high performance fighter jet that served in the RAF during rhe 60’s and 70’s. There is a famous incident where an RAF jet mechanic accidentally took off in one while he was working on it. He survived. But look up videos on it. Crazy story.
I'd get along very well with this drive!! lol RIght up my alley!
I so dig tour intros...
Yea andy
Dope intro jams as always
Dang Andy…you are awesome.
Peace brother.
Delicious tone, want one!
Absolutely fantastic have a wonderful day also i have subscribed to the channel Andy ❤😊
Awesome! Thank you!
every time you use your strat and some low-gain overdrive it always sounds like the band Big Star. That booster doesn't seem to do much, curious to see how this pedal compares to the Scarelt Tunic. $700 is alot of Aussie dosh for another dual overdrive type pedal
Seems similar to the Dane, but with a tube? I love the Dane. Any need for this?
Hi Andy, off topic, but what's that Les Paul shaped semi on the wall behind you?
That's a Godin Montreal Premiere, my poor man's Alex Lifeson/Howard Roberts Fusion guitar!
From the pickguard I thought it was a heritage
I think I’m going to pull the trigger on this, need an od/boost…Plus, I have a bunch of nos 12ax7s I want to play around with😂
The manual describes it as thirsty for current. 1000 mA at 12volts. That’s a whole amp of current. Tricky for a lot of pedalboard power supplies. Surprised the manual doesn’t mention expected life of the 12ax7 or how to open it up to swap it, though I’d expect the 12ax7 to last for years if it’s not driven too hard and replacement should be pretty easy. I would have loved to see the inside of the pedal.
HI, we mention that we supply a 1000mA supply with the pedal. Actual current draw is 260-300mA in steady state use. On power up the tube heater draws more current up to 700mA. this then settles down to its steady state figure. I mention in the manual that in experiments with loads of different power supplies the 500mA provided by some supplies is enough, it's just that the heater takes longer to reach optimum temperature and settle. there's some nice macro shots of the guts in our official launch video if that helps?
@@thorpyfx2679 thanks very much for the reply!
It's got a toob! A toob I tell yah a god dam toob...
Mus. Hab. Toob!
I like Chris Buck and this pedal sounds great, but I wonder how difference a preamp tube in a pedal makes. This is a serious question--I've never tried one!
I used to use the EHX English muffin a lot which has two 12ax7s. It was a good sounding pedal, but it wasn’t any better or worse than other good drive pedals without tubes. I ended up selling it because it was just too big and used a wacky power supply
I have a few Kingsley tube pedals. Not a tube snob, btw, I love solid state sounds just as much. I'd say my experience with tube ODs is that they feel more like a direct extension of any tube amp I'm playing into.
Not that a good transistor/opamp overdrive can't sound great, it's just more of a "contrast" compared to my Kingsley's. I'd argue that contrast is preferable in many situations. No tube overdrive can do the treble booster thing, for instance.
I also had an EHX LPB-2ube for a while. It was great for adding a little grit to the old Roland Cube I relied on back then.
@@Nick-qq2nq, same here. If you run your drive in front of a tube amp (Mesa Rectoverb in my case), tone-shaping circuits are much more important than tube vs transistor. I now use a Coppersound Foxcatcher and a Wampler Plexi Mini, get a more glassy drive (meaning better for me) than with the English Muffn.
@@Nick-qq2nqI’m staring at my English Muffn…Doesn’t have any tubes in it anymore😂(though, it had a TON of gain…)Tried a Blackstar ht dual and it didn’t really do anything for me either
Sounds really good but $500 is brutal.
Agreed. Robust pricing.
500 bucks is the new 200 bucks 🎉🎉🎉
Rocketing past Kingsley pricing and approaching Cornish......Ballsy move I guess.
When Andy turns a knob to the right, his hand turns to the left 4:38
That's funny! I noticed that in the editing too, must be because the knobs are recessed :)
I promise I'm not being critical Maybe it's your settings or maybe You Tube but with that guitar the pedal sounds so digital.. The hi end is piercing.. Gonna Check out some more videos. I've checked out your channel a bunch and always like the content and I'm praying that something with a Tube inside doesn't sound like what I'm hearing.. Thanks for posting
That’s cool, I appreciate your feedback. These days, all audio is digital so I’d urge you to find a different way to translate what your ears are hearing. Many people think that a tube will “warm” up the tone but in reality, this is a very revealing pedal, partly because Chris has a very delicate touch and often uses many pedals stacked up to shape his signature sound. So, in a nutshell this pedal doesn’t instantly warm up your tone but you can certainly roll the treble back. Also, look at EJ’s settings on the Tube Driver as an example: zero treble, zero bass 😁
@@AndyDemos Yeah I get it .. But when you play lets say into a Tube Screamer or MXR Drive the hi end sounds rounder and sustains better.. Maybe it's the set up on the guitar too. But to me it sounds like playing through a Multi FXs Pedal drive. If you're a player which I assume you are I think you know what I mean by Digital Sounding.. Keep jamming and God Bless PS I subscribed to your channel
@@jimmyoandrhondalee7431 Thanks for subscribing, hope you enjoy!
Haven't found a single video or website mentioning what tube this pedal uses.
Thorpy mentions it; JJ ECC83s (12ax7)
@@AndyDemos Thanks Andy. Great demo as always.
This or Tonex one 😢
The layout is unique. Gain is not at the top big knobs. Chris prefers controlling tone to adjusting gain on tap.
Isn’t this kinda just a Kingsley Paige boost ☝️
Same category but different circuits 👍🏻
I was expecting this to sound better. Sounds boxy and nasally. Like there’s some room reverb in the circuit? Bummer. Thorpy utilizing a tube was crazy enticing.
Sounds harsh and raspy to me. I suppose it’s very dependent on the amp/speaker, but all the demos I’ve checked out so far are similar. I’m sure it’s great in the right context, but I was expecting it to sound more “amp-like”.
I just bought Friedman IR-D, with tax $547 so everything of quality costs around $500. Look at the new Strymon Bug Sky MX reverb released today without tax $676
All cost less than the Kingsley Juggler!
@@funkyfurballs1078 I compared last night Friedman IR-D to Kingsley Constable (the older one based on Plexi preamp). I have to say that IR-D came out very positively, I am going to keep it. I have Fractal FM9. A few years ago Leon Todd from Australia created a patch that would have just power amp and speaker emulation (and effects as needed). From IR-D send to Fractal to this patch, it sounded unbelievable, both clean and gain, better in my opinion than IR-D's power amp emulation and cab IRs.
@@henrykc3 Looks like my comment has disappeared? Thanks for the info. I decided not to include my Juggler on my Prog-Fusion board and will use it as a preamp for just Blues... but keeping the Minstrel on the board.
It sounds like a good overdrive, but $500 for almost any overdrive is a bunch of nonsense.
