Had a herniated lumbar disc situation that started last year. Stuck on the floor with crippling sciatica for a few months. No stretches or exercises made even a lick of difference. Only thing that helped a little was oxycodone and later an injection. Shit sucks. Hope your recovery is going well.
When it comes to palm muted sections, I'm a downpicker all the way, unless I specifically want some groove in there. I'm more flexible when it comes to unmuted notes... though, not by that much, I'd say 🙃

Hetfield plays very different live nowadays because he's the singer, too and does a lot of gestures / body language to underline the lyrics. He really transformed over the years. So nothing wrong about not playing exactly live as it was recorded in the Studio, especially when you take his strong vocal performance into account *while* he plays his guitar at the same time.
I also enjoyed the Guitar Summit in Mannheim. So many good guitar gear, so many guitars that I tryed out for the first time. I would like to see Solar Guitars at the Guitar Summit next year. 😉🤘

Simple Physics when dealing with your back: A body in motion, Stays in motion. A body at rest... Rusts like an old car in a field. Hang everyday to relieve pressure. Whether it's from a pull up bar or anything that will safely support your weight..30-60 seconds. OR an inversion table. I told the wife, if there is a house fire, she is on her own because I have to get my inversion table out! NO CAFFINE! This will dehydrate your discs. Full 16oz or more of water immediately after waking up straight out of bed. Not just walking around, but proper squats no weight every morning, show your body you need it to work in different ways besides just walking and sitting. Get out of a bed or a vehicle using both legs and keeping abs tight. Floss the sciatic nerve to help relieve raw pain and swelling from inflammation. Lay on your side on a hard floor with a pillow in between your legs in a fetal position. Out stretch the top leg and pump foot up and down slowly 20 times each side. This will move the "raw" rubbed on spot on the nerve else where and allow healing to begin. (like when there is a sticker in your sock and your move your sock so the sticker moves away from the raw spot. Do this before bed, so it heals as you sleep when your not moving around. Above all, just keep swimming. Go with the flow. Good days and bad days. Don't try to swim up stream or ice skate up hill. remember Que Sera Sera(whatever will be, .. Will be)

If there is one thing EVERYBODY knows about Hetfield is that he is the Motherfucking Metal Overlord of downpicking! Yeah, he cheats alright....he's that fucking good at it! Now, there are times now he will alternate for a few but put it in perspective...he is 60yrs old but having seen them several times this year, I'd say 95% of his playing remains downpicking. He opened with Creep and when he first started playing the main riff he was alternate picking it then changed it...was warming up I dare say as it was the first song of the night. A lot of womens labias just had a sigh of relief knowing that monster right hand is more tame now. lol
