  • In this video we look at an effective solution to a common issue with the 370z steering lock failing which causes the car to be unable to start up. The problem is fixed by removing a fuse from the fuse box and outlines the process and more importantly the location of the fuse box which is very difficult to find. The rest of the fix involves simply locating the steering lock box and hitting with a hammer while the key fob is in range and the car power is on. If unable to turn the power on keep pressing the power button while hitting the steering lock box.
    Update: This repair has been successful with no issue for over 6 months now.

    Thanks a lot, Very Helpful. My steering lock was broken in the unlock position. I took a hammer and tapped it aggressively, maybe five times, then ignition lights came on. Then, with the ignition on ACC, I removed the steering lock fuse. All good !!! Took about 20 minutes.

    • @nothandsomebuthandy

      You can pull it out while on the ON position, just don't use the brake so the car doesn't start. The only issue with not tapping on the box is that there a chance the lock pin is retracted just far enough to start but not fully, so it's a good idea just to give it some light taps for good measure. Then pull the fuse and you're done.

    • @nothandsomebuthandy
      @nothandsomebuthandy  4 месяца назад +2

      The reason for the tapping is to help the lock pin fall into the retracted position.

      For a complete fix to the problem and so this does not happen again (where the car doesn’t get out of lock and leave me stranded) should I just pull the fuse?
      Or should get the steering wheel lock box and fuse replaced?
      Like if I pull the fuse, is there a chance where the car will leave me stranded and I would have to bet on hammering the steering wheel lock box once again? Or this issue would be fixed with the fuse pull?

    • @nothandsomebuthandy
      @nothandsomebuthandy  9 месяцев назад +1

      A metal one is fine but just tap lightly to begin with. You're looking to vibrate the locking pin loose so the solenoid can pull it back. It's best to have a second person who can wiggle the steering wheel a little and press the start button while you tap on the box.
      Once the car goes to the on position you can stop tapping and pull the fuse.
      Don't forget to have the key fob in the car with a good battery. Maybe put it in the fob slot to be safe.

Anyone know if it can just be swapped with a used one from a junk yard or is this a dealer program type of item only the dealer or a locksmith can program it? I can't find your other comment but I wanted to add that that if you pulled the fuse, and the car is going to the "ON" position if you hit start without pressing the brake, and you have a good strong battery, then I think there is a possibility the starter is sticking and should be replaced.

      As a side note I did notice the comment about the microswitches in your disassembled module and if you don't want to replace it just hardwire each of the switches closed. Looking at the wiring diagram if the steering lock fuse is removed they should have no ill effect on the car.

      @@nothandsomebuthandy This is that module because banging on that module fixed it temporarily plus I just changed the starter 20k miles ago with a new Hitachi OEM one. Also the battery is brand new, just got a new battery just to make sure and the 5 fusable links on the battery terminal are good. I buy only name brand or OEM parts for that car. The car has 200k miles so far and its become a massive parts hawg after 180k miles but I am a good mechanic.

    • @nothandsomebuthandy
      @nothandsomebuthandy  Год назад +1

      Well it sounds like you've replaced the right parts so you're probably on the right track with the module. A few things I would also check is the two starter relays and if the car is manual the clutch safety switch to make sure everything is make good strong contact. And as a last resort if you have a spare key give that a try with a new battery as well. Sometimes the transponder can get you as far as the ON position but not start.

The key fob signal antenna in the car seems to be really sensitive to less-than-perfect voltage and I've seen that even if the battery starts well the key is not detected properly. I've also read about people changing the antenna but a new battery is inexpensive and easy to change.

If that doesn't work, I suggest a new battery in the car, in my car I had a similar issue with a decent battery but it went away with a new one. Did you hit the box under the steering wheel with a hammer?

      @@nothandsomebuthandy didnt have a hammer with me unfortunately. I did try hitting it with some force from my foot since i had boots on but still have yet to get it working. I did some research, and people often say it might just be the key fob so im waiting to get my spare one from my relative. Hopefully that works otherwise im gonna have to have it towed to the dealership since still under warranty.

      You should find a hammer or something metal, it needs more of a sharp quick vibration hit to allow the lock pin to move back out of the steering column so your boot will not do. You need to slide under your dash a little upside down to make sure you're hitting the correct box.

      As far as the key fob, do this repair first because of it hasn't malfunctioned yet it will another day and leave you stranded. To be safe insert the fob into the port on the dash so you get the best signal. Also if you have a battery charger connect it so you have max power to the antenna. I haven't had this car long but like you have done a ton of research on its little gremlins.

    So my 370z did this to me too a few days ago and had to get it towed home bc it wouldn’t turn on at all so I seen this video and thought why not i try it out and boom it works goes out of lock mode and then I didn’t start her up I went and pulled out the fuse for the steering wheel lock and then I put everything back and turned her on then off again and on just to make sure and it was good but when I took a drove to my grandmas house I told her I fixed the problem myself and when I was done hanging out I go into the Z and boom back into lock mode

      You might have to put the fuse back in and try again, only take the fuse out when you're sure the lock is retracted

      I recommend hitting on the box again and getting it to move to the on position, then pulling the fuse

      When you say "still in lock mode" do you mean the start button isn't working or the key light is on the dash?

    This doesn't work if the lock unit has completely failed. Ran a permanent ground to the pink wire off of lock unit

      Were you able to release the lock this way? Did you still remove the fuse?
