My experience has been that the church in a lot of ways perpetuate black women getting married to ANYONE as they advocate for marriage more than happiness, being leveled up, etc. Most of the activities in the church are for married couples and older single women are pitied. Yes they have single groups for teens through maybe mid 30's after that you are on your own. My mother was raised in the church, was there almost every day of her life and she met my father in the church (coincidentally another dusty), and that turned out to be a extremely abusive relationship for both my mother, me, and my siblings. The church encouraged her to marry him, then once they started having marital problems they sought out counseling from the church while they were coaching my father to divorce my mother on the side. He even tried to convince me to get an apartment because he KNEW he was getting evicted long before I did. I later found out that he was a SERIAL user of women. I am backing Chrissie on this. As a black gay man, I was the come up guy. On several occasions I helped guys financial who didn't deserved my help. Many of the things I helped them with were the normal things we should all be able to cover but for whatever reason they couldn't. The truth was my self esteem was low and I didn't love myself enough to learn from the mistakes and ask and pray for better. As of right now I am in a better headspace, learning about my worth in life, and will be single until I achieve the self love I need to function and hold down a strong relationship with someone who will be a helpmate and not a hindrance. It is absolutely OK to want better and to wait until you achieve it. LOVE yourself first and foremost so you can avoid the pitfalls of a loveless and sexless marriage.

Exactly. I believe the issue is that working on those things requires a sustained effort of honest, self-reflection ( which takes time). I believe many people have neither the patience nor the emotional capacity to go down that road.

My experience has been that the church in a lot of ways perpetuate black women getting married to ANYONE as they advocate for marriage more than happiness, being leveled up, etc. Most of the activities in the church are for married couples and older single women are pitied. Yes they have single groups for teens through maybe mid 30's after that you are on your own. I am backing Chrissie on this. As a black gay man, I was the come up guy. On several occasions I helped guys financial who didn't deserved my help. Many of the things I helped them with were the normal things we should all be able to cover but for whatever reason they couldn't.
The truth was my self esteem was low and I didn't love myself enough to learn from the mistakes and ask and pray for better. As of right now I am in a better headspace, learning about my worth in life, and will be single until I achieve the self love I need to function and hold down a strong relationship with someone who will be a helpmate and not a hindrance.
It is absolutely OK to want better and to wait until you achieve it. LOVE yourself first and foremost so you can avoid the pitfalls of a loveless and sexless marriage.

I’m not desperate. I recently dated someone for a whole month and he had me paying for a couple small things. Although small I brought this up to him and instead of accepting the fact he went on a long list of things he’s done for his friends. I told him I don’t care about his friends because his current actions are not equating. He denied everything. We went on a date following that talk and he still had me pay for something. I completely ghosted him. I can not.

What's crazy is that I've known a lot females during my time in school who give there money away to undeserving men. As a black woman, I had a black man I was seeing say, that he would love me more, want to be with me more, if I needed him. That he didn’t feel I needed him. 🙄 What was I supposed to do, not have my shit together? Bearing in mind at the time I had none of my external/material shit together.(no home of my own, wasn’t driving, no career[ I was studying]). What he meant by needing him more was that I should have been more emotionally/mentally needy. 😒

Exactly. I believe the issue is that working on those things requires a sustained effort of honest, self-reflection ( which takes time). I believe many people have neither the patience nor the emotional capacity to go down that road.
I was sooo embarrassed by those tweets. I also inquired why that wasn’t considered emasculating but rather praised by many black men. Black women need to have higher standards and expectations. I hate that building a man up is expected from us. It’s disgusting and needs to stop. It’s crazy because there were some black men and women calling others negative for pointing out the dysfunction that’s among many BWBM relationships.
