Terry as usual a terrific video, your filter walkthrough was fascinating, so impressive, glad your potted plants are doing well now, my wife has said feed your acer with eggshell’s and use pond water from a watering can with an aspirin dissolved in it and it will come to life and bud late June through August.

Hi Terry, love watching your videos 👍 I would look into changing the gravel for clay balls (Amazon £16 for 46 litres) I've always used them as planting media for my pond including my bog filter, they are porous, much better for flow and also house beneficial bacteria. It's a old school filter media that is now widely used in aquaponics

Hi Terry. I think I would add a couple of 90's on the outflow from the bog filter so I could adjust the water level a bit. You might find you're going to need a bit higher water in there for it to work. Iris are a good plant to work in there and Arum lilies (not sure of the spelling) are another. You could also add bull rushes but they go mad when they grow. I even have some you could have if you want them.
Hi Jim, I can't raise the outflow mate as it will run to high and nearly overflow at the other end. The gravel does slow the flow, even now I've used the larger gravel. There's about a 2" to 3" drop in water level from one end to the other. That's what the problem has been mate. Trouble is, I can't have anything in there that grows too tall, as the wife's plants are at the back of it, and I've been told mate 😅😅 you know what it's like, but thanks for the offer mate, much appreciated 👍👍 take care, Terry.

I've had a bog which was 18" or so inches deep. (Sorry I'm from US)45 cm deep. Even has stagnant areas.. and the roots usually will go deep enough to get what they need. I do wonder what effect cloverleaf has on your bog. I can't get it in the US so I haven't done much research. Also, often plants turning yellow are usually from over watering. So make sure you have plants that actually like their roots submerged if you have a true big setup.
Hi DeAndre, The Cloverleaf Blanket Answer says on the tub, it's totally safe for pond plants, but they were starting to turn yellow before I used it. The plants I bought were all wetland plants for ponds, or so they said. I'll see how the Mk2 bog goes with water flowing through all the gravel. Thanks mate, much appreciated, Terry.

I have Flag Iris reeds in my bog filter that thrive with the roots totally immersed in water, watercress is another one worth trying. Try without the gravel to start with in baskets then add more gravel once established

Hi Terry Great video What would have saved you a lot of work I notice your return was at the bottom if you had put an upstand on the return so it had to overflow into it or an upstand on the outside I would have raised the water level in the bog sonyou would have benefitted from all the gravel media .. and you wouldn't have had to cut it down But it's done now nice job

Hi Jamie, and thanks mate👍. The problem with the bog filter was the water level in the filter. With it being a channel, the water level in the inflow end was 3 inches higher than the outflow end, so only half the plants were getting water. The gravel slows the water flow that much, as it's a narrow channel for flow. I'll see how we get on with it now I've changed it mate. Thanks and take care, Terry.

That was a great walkthrough the filter system. So if I got that right, the shower, the upflow and protein skimmer are like in a loop with the moving bed? The pond looked really clear. The shusui has grown!
Hi Lau, and thank you, very much appreciated as always. The shower is drawing water from the RDF outlet, and returns the water to my 3" pond return pipe. The up-flow and protein skimmer draw from the moving bed, and return to the 3" pond return pipe. This is so I don't get too much water bypass the moving bed. I must say, it all seem to be working well with that setup. The Sushi has doubled in size over winter with having the pond heated. I have to admit, I might not heat next winter if the cost of electric keeps going up like it is. It cost me £185.00 to heat my pond this winter, which I don't think is too bad. That's from November to now. But it could be over double that next winter, so they might have to get cold come winter time, and they won't like that 😅😅 as they're spoilt rotten 😅😅 Thanks again Lau, take care and stay safe, Terry.

Any idea what your soil is like. Acer needs to be moderately acidic. Your planted acer looks like its it not getting fed and roots may be stunted. If your soil is alkaline when you take it out, make the hole larger (about 3x the size of root ball) and mix in a good proration of Ericaceous compost when replanting. Ensure roots are not rotted and are free to travel. 👍
Hi Paul, thank you for your comment and advice. It's very much appreciated. Our soil here is quite clayey, so I did dig the hole quite big when I planted it, and filled the hole with acer compost. This acer was not well when I got it from a company on eBay, and they did give me a refund. I have since bought another one, and put that in there, and it does seem to be doing better. Brilliant Tel, many thanks for the set up info. Re the plant in the garden that wasn't doing so well - have you tried throwing some of the waste from the sieve filter around it? I have noticed a real improvement in the roses and fruit trees since I started doing that, plus I use the waste water when cleaning out my midi filter set up. Thanks again mate

It might depend how it flows, i have one where the water is pumped into the bottom from the pond and then filters back up through the gravel to over flow from the top, does yours flow one chamber to another ? Length ways? I have done a little research and the the bog needs to be a certain depth to do the job correctly, but that may depends on how it flows or designed. Bottom up flow I find very effective, plants grow crazy and the water utilises the whole bucket or barrel. The bottom up one I use is wine barrel size and depth, so deeper rather than longer that way it has to use the whole area by the time the water flows back and over into pond . But I find your set up very impressive 👍🏼 I do think you need a certain depth for the different oxygen zones to get the parts of it working and slow flow. But I could be wrong and wold be very interested in hearing other’s experiences with them. 👍🏼
Hi mate, and thanks for the info. I have the water coming in at one end and flowing out at the other, it's just one tray with no compartments. I do find that the water level is 2" to 3" higher from one end to the other. So the gravel is slowing the flow, even with using the larger gravel. Terry I've just ordered another screen for my RDF, Woven Mesh 200 which is 70 micron. Are you aware that your plans call for Woven Mesh 325 which is 44 micron? I feel that this is a bit too fine in my opinion, especially as I'm gravity fed. I'm changing it to be able to increase the flow in the pond and hold the water level in the RDF. I would be interested to know why you went with such a fine mesh on your plans, when most manufacturers go with 70 to 120 micron screens. Thanks Bob
You know when you dosed with Cloverleaf did you bypass your drum for a few days as even with me dissolving in hot water the drum seemed to remove it all in a matter of hours I could tell as the drum was cleaning very frequently.
Hi Richard, No mate, I didn't bypass the drum. But I did turn everything off in my filter house, apart from the air to the pond for nearly 2 hours, to give it a chance for most of it to settle. The drum does, like you say, take it out of the water, so I did lose some, but it seems to have worked quite well. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty I did a dose on Saturday but couldn't cope with the bottom all being white. How long should I have left it before I swept the bottom, most of it's turned white perhaps I should do another dose?
Hi Mate, It's best to leave it in the pond as long as possible. Have a look on the tub, I think you have to leave it a week or so before re-dosing, but I'm not sure, so do check. I don't mix mine with hot water, I just give it a good stir, and add it to the pond. I must admit it is quite messy, but it does work. I've found that algae treatments are never fast working. It can take a couple of weeks to do the full job. You could always try the Aqua Source Resolve, it's quite good, and you don't get the mess. You just sprinkle it straight in to the pond. Hi Alan, every pond is different with their cleaning times, as it depends on how much dirt is coming up from the pond. I would start with once a week, and see how things go mate. If you're finding a lot of dirt in tubs 1 and 2 when cleaning, reduce the time between cleans. If your not getting much dirt, leave it a couple of days longer. Your welcome mate. The bulk of your bacteria will be in the bio bed, tub 3 (moving bed) which requires very little maintenance, as it's self-cleaning. A wipe around the bottom twice a year with a long handled brush usually does the trick. You will find most of the dirt in tub 1, as it's the first in line, so it may require more cleaning than tub 2. Tub 2 catches whatever tub 1 misses. As long as you don't use tap water for cleaning in any of the tubs, (as tap water contains chemicals to kill bacteria), your bacteria will be fine mate. hello terry first of all it seems all wrong to me. your trying to make a wetland filter not a bog filter. the main difference is one has soil the other has stone and gravel in it. What I would do is rebuild it. you need a large void under the stone this can be done with plastic boxes , crates, big pipes. then on top of the large void or empty space you need various sizes of gravel. The idea is the water will flow quickly and filter up between the cracks in the rocks up where the plants can feed. This also gives the bactria to live and colonize the stone starting with big stones or smallish rocks. I would consider 80-100mm rocks then another layer of 30-40mm then 10-20mm then finally a layer of pea gravel. Get lots of pond plants and sit them directly into the pea gravel. wash soil off. the plants will feed off the fish. I am building just that myself. its modelled on a aquascape wetland filter but scaled down by a factor of 1000 hope you find this info useful.

Isn't the issue that your inlet and outlet are at the same level so the water wont ever rise high enough? Maybe put the outlet higher and let the water level rise? Of course, I might be wrong so apologies in advance!
Hi Paul, my in and outflow are the same level mate, that's right. But the problem is, the water is not flowing through the gravel quick enough, from one end to the other. The gravel is slowing the flow, which is the problem. If I lifted just the outlets as it is, it would flood where the inlet is. You are correct in saying, the problem is the in and outlets. What I need to do is, have the water coming in all along the bottom of the filter, so it's released all along the filter bottom, then have about 3 outlets along the top. The water then would come in at the bottom, rise up through the gravel and out at the top. This would keep a constant water level right across the filter. Hey Terry, it's the wind that's doing my head in constantly heavy winds so can't even sit out with a coffee to watch the pond. I bought some baby tears and had 3 plants, 2 of them died off I think too much water and the other is also very slow growing! Have you thought about putting some water cress in your bog filter to give it a try as very cheap and very good at cleaning the water?
Hi Richardo, the wind here has been terrible. The trees around us help to shade us a bit, but we are finding loads of branches in the garden and in my pond from them. I think your bog water is just whooshing along the bottom of the filter. You need to put some stops in the bottom of each of the three bays. Then the water has to go up and over each weir which will give you more flow through the gravel. just my idea
It might be that the water is that clean overall there is just no nutrients for those plants? I have the same issue, all my plants in my large "river" return are yellow but I never hardly even get any nitrate readings so nothing for the plants to feed off??

I have to go with a pressurised system so I’m thinking of linking two together but with a separate 110w evo UV. Can I run two filters, in series, off the same pump? I’d love to have a pre-filter like yours but can’t think how I can do it with a pressurised system. Hope you can help. Paul.
Hi Paul, a few years ago now I ran 2 pressure filters on my pond, but I had them fitted to a Y connection so the flow got split 50 / 50 that way, one filter is not doing all the work. It did work really well, and I also had my UV just running on the return from one pressure filter, and never had any problems mate. That's all I know mate really. Hope it helps a bit. Hi Paul, I've never tried it mate, but I don't see a problem. As long as the UV doesn't restrict the flow. When I run the 3 barrel system, I always had my UV after the submersible pond pump, just before the filters. If you have a bottom drain, you could run some sort of sieve filter first, to take out all the algae and bigger dirt before it gets to the filters. Terry.

Hi Les, I just got some normal gravel from my local garden centre. It was supposed to be graded, but it wasn't, so it is different sizes. It was 18mm (3/4) on the bag, but it's normal gravel you'd put on your drive mate, if that helps. Terry.

What pressure pump are you running on the drum ? In 4yrs of having my drum it’s gone through 3 pumps now just put new one on this week 🙄 and my pump for my shower packed up last week ! Typical ! 🤦🏻♂️😂
Hi mate, your not having a good time with pond pumps by the sound of it mate.I'm running a Jebao Variflow 30,000 @ 70%, so it's getting a good flow of water. My last variflow pond pump was on there 2 years, and is still going strong, so I don't know how long they last. Just a thought, but are you regulating the flow from your pump, as that could make it work hard. That's why I use the Variflow pumps, real easy to control. Thanks mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty my main pump for shower was 10yrs old so done well really 😂 just these high pressure pumps on the drum for spray bar that’s needed replacing 3 times now . It’s the Filtreau Drum Filter Wash Pump.. hope this one lasts longer than the last two ..just wondered what type you use ?
I use a normal 260w household shower booster pump bought on eBay, and it seems to be doing the job. I use to use the 150w, but thought I'd try the 260w. Not much difference really. Terry.

Hi Martin, the problem is the water on the inflow end is 3" higher than the outflow end because the gravel slows the flow. So if I raise the water level on the outflow, it floods the inflow end. The larger gravel looks to be a better bet now, so I'll give it a run and see how it goes mate, take care, Terry.
Hi Terry too much water makes plant leaves go yellow you need to get plants that don't mind having their roots permanently in water. You probably jumped the gun cutting it down. But you're an engineer not a gardener. 🙂

Hi Terry, love watching your videos 👍 I would look into changing the gravel for clay balls (Amazon £16 for 46 litres) I've always used them as planting media for my pond including my bog filter, they are porous, much better for flow and also house beneficial bacteria. It's a old school filter media that is now widely used in aquaponics
Forgot to mention, they need a really good clean before use!

Hi Terry. I think I would add a couple of 90's on the outflow from the bog filter so I could adjust the water level a bit. You might find you're going to need a bit higher water in there for it to work. Iris are a good plant to work in there and Arum lilies (not sure of the spelling) are another. You could also add bull rushes but they go mad when they grow. I even have some you could have if you want them.
Hi Jim, I can't raise the outflow mate as it will run to high and nearly overflow at the other end. The gravel does slow the flow, even now I've used the larger gravel. There's about a 2" to 3" drop in water level from one end to the other. That's what the problem has been mate. Trouble is, I can't have anything in there that grows too tall, as the wife's plants are at the back of it, and I've been told mate 😅😅 you know what it's like, but thanks for the offer mate, much appreciated 👍👍 take care, Terry.

I've had a bog which was 18" or so inches deep. (Sorry I'm from US)45 cm deep. Even has stagnant areas.. and the roots usually will go deep enough to get what they need. I do wonder what effect cloverleaf has on your bog. I can't get it in the US so I haven't done much research. Also, often plants turning yellow are usually from over watering. So make sure you have plants that actually like their roots submerged if you have a true big setup.
Hi DeAndre, The Cloverleaf Blanket Answer says on the tub, it's totally safe for pond plants, but they were starting to turn yellow before I used it. The plants I bought were all wetland plants for ponds, or so they said. I'll see how the Mk2 bog goes with water flowing through all the gravel. Thanks mate, much appreciated, Terry.

I have Flag Iris reeds in my bog filter that thrive with the roots totally immersed in water, watercress is another one worth trying. Try without the gravel to start with in baskets then add more gravel once established

What would have saved you a lot of work I notice your return was at the bottom if you had put an upstand on the return so it had to overflow into it or an upstand on the outside I would have raised the water level in the bog sonyou would have benefitted from all the gravel media .. and you wouldn't have had to cut it down

Hi Jamie, and thanks mate👍. The problem with the bog filter was the water level in the filter. With it being a channel, the water level in the inflow end was 3 inches higher than the outflow end, so only half the plants were getting water. The gravel slows the water flow that much, as it's a narrow channel for flow. I'll see how we get on with it now I've changed it mate. Thanks and take care, Terry.

That was a great walkthrough the filter system. So if I got that right, the shower, the upflow and protein skimmer are like in a loop with the moving bed?

Hi Lau, and thank you, very much appreciated as always. The shower is drawing water from the RDF outlet, and returns the water to my 3" pond return pipe. The up-flow and protein skimmer draw from the moving bed, and return to the 3" pond return pipe. This is so I don't get too much water bypass the moving bed. I must say, it all seem to be working well with that setup. The Sushi has doubled in size over winter with having the pond heated. I have to admit, I might not heat next winter if the cost of electric keeps going up like it is. It cost me £185.00 to heat my pond this winter, which I don't think is too bad. That's from November to now. But it could be over double that next winter, so they might have to get cold come winter time, and they won't like that 😅😅 as they're spoilt rotten 😅😅 Thanks again Lau, take care and stay safe, Terry.

Weather is good here but fresh in the morning.
Any idea what your soil is like. Acer needs to be moderately acidic. Your planted acer looks like its it not getting fed and roots may be stunted. If your soil is alkaline when you take it out, make the hole larger (about 3x the size of root ball) and mix in a good proration of Ericaceous compost when replanting. Ensure roots are not rotted and are free to travel. 👍
Hi Paul, thank you for your comment and advice. It's very much appreciated. Our soil here is quite clayey, so I did dig the hole quite big when I planted it, and filled the hole with acer compost. This acer was not well when I got it from a company on eBay, and they did give me a refund. I have since bought another one, and put that in there, and it does seem to be doing better. It might depend how it flows, i have one where the water is pumped into the bottom from the pond and then filters back up through the gravel to over flow from the top, does yours flow one chamber to another ? Length ways?
I have done a little research and the the bog needs to be a certain depth to do the job correctly, but that may depends on how it flows or designed.
Bottom up flow I find very effective, plants grow crazy and the water utilises the whole bucket or barrel. The bottom up one I use is wine barrel size and depth, so deeper rather than longer that way it has to use the whole area by the time the water flows back and over into pond .
But I find your set up very impressive 👍🏼 I do think you need a certain depth for the different oxygen zones to get the parts of it working and slow flow. But I could be wrong and wold be very interested in hearing other’s experiences with them. 👍🏼
Hi mate, and thanks for the info. I have the water coming in at one end and flowing out at the other, it's just one tray with no compartments. I do find that the water level is 2" to 3" higher from one end to the other. So the gravel is slowing the flow, even with using the larger gravel. Terry I've just ordered another screen for my RDF, Woven Mesh 200 which is 70 micron. Are you aware that your plans call for Woven Mesh 325 which is 44 micron? I feel that this is a bit too fine in my opinion, especially as I'm gravity fed. I'm changing it to be able to increase the flow in the pond and hold the water level in the RDF. I would be interested to know why you went with such a fine mesh on your plans, when most manufacturers go with 70 to 120 micron screens. Thanks Bob

You know when you dosed with Cloverleaf did you bypass your drum for a few days as even with me dissolving in hot water the drum seemed to remove it all in a matter of hours I could tell as the drum was cleaning very frequently.
Hi Richard, No mate, I didn't bypass the drum. But I did turn everything off in my filter house, apart from the air to the pond for nearly 2 hours, to give it a chance for most of it to settle. The drum does, like you say, take it out of the water, so I did lose some, but it seems to have worked quite well. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty I did a dose on Saturday but couldn't cope with the bottom all being white. How long should I have left it before I swept the bottom, most of it's turned white perhaps I should do another dose?
Hi Mate, It's best to leave it in the pond as long as possible. Have a look on the tub, I think you have to leave it a week or so before re-dosing, but I'm not sure, so do check. I don't mix mine with hot water, I just give it a good stir, and add it to the pond. I must admit it is quite messy, but it does work. I've found that algae treatments are never fast working. It can take a couple of weeks to do the full job. You could always try the Aqua Source Resolve, it's quite good, and you don't get the mess. You just sprinkle it straight in to the pond. Hi Alan, every pond is different with their cleaning times, as it depends on how much dirt is coming up from the pond. I would start with once a week, and see how things go mate. If you're finding a lot of dirt in tubs 1 and 2 when cleaning, reduce the time between cleans. If your not getting much dirt, leave it a couple of days longer. Your welcome mate. The bulk of your bacteria will be in the bio bed, tub 3 (moving bed) which requires very little maintenance, as it's self-cleaning. A wipe around the bottom twice a year with a long handled brush usually does the trick. You will find most of the dirt in tub 1, as it's the first in line, so it may require more cleaning than tub 2. Tub 2 catches whatever tub 1 misses. As long as you don't use tap water for cleaning in any of the tubs, (as tap water contains chemicals to kill bacteria), your bacteria will be fine mate. hello terry first of all it seems all wrong to me. your trying to make a wetland filter not a bog filter. the main difference is one has soil the other has stone and gravel in it. What I would do is rebuild it. you need a large void under the stone this can be done with plastic boxes , crates, big pipes. then on top of the large void or empty space you need various sizes of gravel. The idea is the water will flow quickly and filter up between the cracks in the rocks up where the plants can feed. This also gives the bactria to live and colonize the stone starting with big stones or smallish rocks. I would consider 80-100mm rocks then another layer of 30-40mm then 10-20mm then finally a layer of pea gravel. Get lots of pond plants and sit them directly into the pea gravel. wash soil off. the plants will feed off the fish. I am building just that myself. its modelled on a aquascape wetland filter but scaled down by a factor of 1000 hope you find this info useful.

Isn't the issue that your inlet and outlet are at the same level so the water wont ever rise high enough? Maybe put the outlet higher and let the water level rise? Of course, I might be wrong so apologies in advance!
Hi Paul, my in and outflow are the same level mate, that's right. But the problem is, the water is not flowing through the gravel quick enough, from one end to the other. The gravel is slowing the flow, which is the problem. If I lifted just the outlets as it is, it would flood where the inlet is. You are correct in saying, the problem is the in and outlets. What I need to do is, have the water coming in all along the bottom of the filter, so it's released all along the filter bottom, then have about 3 outlets along the top. The water then would come in at the bottom, rise up through the gravel and out at the top. This would keep a constant water level right across the filter. I bought some baby tears and had 3 plants, 2 of them died off I think too much water and the other is also very slow growing!
Have you thought about putting some water cress in your bog filter to give it a try as very cheap and very good at cleaning the water?
Hi Richardo, the wind here has been terrible. The trees around us help to shade us a bit, but we are finding loads of branches in the garden and in my pond from them. I think your bog water is just whooshing along the bottom of the filter. You need to put some stops in the bottom of each of the three bays. Then the water has to go up and over each weir which will give you more flow through the gravel. just my idea

It might be that the water is that clean overall there is just no nutrients for those plants? I have the same issue, all my plants in my large "river" return are yellow but I never hardly even get any nitrate readings so nothing for the plants to feed off??

Hi Terry, bit of advice needed if you don’t mind. I’m limited as to the set up I can have. I have to go with a pressurised system so I’m thinking of linking two together but with a separate 110w evo UV. Can I run two filters, in series, off the same pump? I’d love to have a pre-filter like yours but can’t think how I can do it with a pressurised system. Hope you can help. Paul.
Hi Paul, a few years ago now I ran 2 pressure filters on my pond, but I had them fitted to a Y connection so the flow got split 50 / 50 that way, one filter is not doing all the work. It did work really well, and I also had my UV just running on the return from one pressure filter, and never had any problems mate. That's all I know mate really. Hope it helps a bit. Hi Paul, I've never tried it mate, but I don't see a problem. As long as the UV doesn't restrict the flow. When I run the 3 barrel system, I always had my UV after the submersible pond pump, just before the filters. If you have a bottom drain, you could run some sort of sieve filter first, to take out all the algae and bigger dirt before it gets to the filters. Terry.

Hi Les, I just got some normal gravel from my local garden centre. It was supposed to be graded, but it wasn't, so it is different sizes. It was 18mm (3/4) on the bag, but it's normal gravel you'd put on your drive mate, if that helps. Terry.

Hi mate, your not having a good time with pond pumps by the sound of it mate.I'm running a Jebao Variflow 30,000 @ 70%, so it's getting a good flow of water. My last variflow pond pump was on there 2 years, and is still going strong, so I don't know how long they last. Just a thought, but are you regulating the flow from your pump, as that could make it work hard. That's why I use the Variflow pumps, real easy to control. Thanks mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty my main pump for shower was 10yrs old so done well really 😂 just these high pressure pumps on the drum for spray bar that’s needed replacing 3 times now . It’s the Filtreau Drum Filter Wash Pump.. hope this one lasts longer than the last two ..just wondered what type you use ?
I use a normal 260w household shower booster pump bought on eBay, and it seems to be doing the job. I use to use the 150w, but thought I'd try the 260w. Not much difference really. Terry.

Hi Martin, the problem is the water on the inflow end is 3" higher than the outflow end because the gravel slows the flow. So if I raise the water level on the outflow, it floods the inflow end. The larger gravel looks to be a better bet now, so I'll give it a run and see how it goes mate, take care, Terry.
Hi Terry too much water makes plant leaves go yellow you need to get plants that don't mind having their roots permanently in water. You probably jumped the gun cutting it down. But you're an engineer not a gardener. 🙂
