      that's because florida muscovy ducks are not really wild. they are homless ducks that someone released and now they are breeding like crazy. (muscovy ducks are from south america)

    I am very fond of the Muscovy around our pond here in Florida. I give them seeds in winter. It does get cold here in Jacksonville. They really like a water dish when you feed them. My favorite MAMA has not done too good with a big bunch of babies. This time she is down to 2 babies and they are 2-3 weeks old and so cute..

    Damn....100k' th view! That alone deserves a thumbs up! I've got Muskovy ducks and Mallards around our house and.. well... I'm absolutely hooked and diving down the rabbit hole so to speak but I'm going to build some nesting beds and tubes for both species.. it's probably wrong for me to do that but if a couple of them decide to use them I figure why not.. I don't intend on interfering in any other way and I do only feed them sparingly and only quality feed ( no salted crackers or breads etc ) but they have become somewhat therapeutic.. definitely never eating duck again... Lol thanks for the video!

      Same! I got some Muscovy ducks a while back. I rescued 3 of them. They were all so dirty and never actually took a bath in a pool or anything. (The yard was so small where they lived, they all lived in one little cage..) Now they come up to me every morning to say hi! They all love the water! But, the male mated with the female. Now, we're waiting for some eggs 😅

    • @HatchiePress
      @HatchiePress 9 лет назад +1

      I haven't seen any for sale around west TN. I order chicks by mail sometimes but I've never seen Muscovy for sale in their catalogs. How did you find yours?

    • @JandjacresNet
      @JandjacresNet  9 лет назад +3

      Mike Davis, we traded some chicken with another local guy. There is still some questionable stuff about whether it is legal to sell them. Essentially, they were classified as invasive, making them illegal, but then the USDA said they wouldn't enforce it while the investigated their findings further. I haven't looked in to that in about a year so I am not sure if it has changed.

    Hi there! Enjoyed your video. I was wondering if the eggs ended up being fertilized? I live by a pond and we have some Muscovy ducks. I believe there are two males and two females. Over a month ago, the females began laying eggs in our front yard. Together, they ended up laying about 18 eggs. After they were done, one female became broody. She has been laying on the eggs since, but none have hatched. It has been over 30 days and I am worried they are not fertilized. She seems to be wearing herself out! I'm worried about her. Is there a way that I can tell if they are fertilized now? Or should I just wait one more week?

    • @JandjacresNet
      @JandjacresNet  8 лет назад +1

      Yes, ours were fertilized. If it were me I would wait. Either they'll hatch or she'll give up. We've never had a duck die on a nest because she refused to stop trying.

    My broody welsh harlequin wont let me anywhere near her nest she hisses like a goose then tries to bite you and she won't let any other birds even the drake near her. Her names big girl because she's so much bigger then the rest but we've had ducks for 8 years and never had one go broody so it's all new to us. I couldn't believe how nice that duck is to handle in the video.

  • @GardeningWithPuppies

    I hope a lot of them are fertile. We owned quite a few ducks years ago and most of them would easily hatch off several clutches each year. Except for one who we named, "Eggeater" for obvious reasons.

    I noticed that our ducks seemed to stagger their brooding. They were all one to two weeks apart. We would have had more hatchings last year, but one girl chose a bad spot for her first nest and the pig got loose and destroyed the her second nest. Poor girl had nothing but bad luck last year.

    We have a mascovy duck sitting on a desk near a gutter pipe in our apartment complex. We see 3 obvious eggs. She has been sitting on them almost 2 months and no babies. Do you think they will ever hatch?

  • @AnimalLoverGirl885
    @AnimalLoverGirl885 6 лет назад

    We always candle one week after the duck goes broody. By that time, the eggs are always developed enough to know if they're fertile.

    To prevent other ducks to come in and lay more eggs while she's brooding, I have swinging door on that nest. The brooding duck will remember to come back to her nest if she had to come outside, but other ducks won't come in and lay more eggs.

    Good luck with the eggs mate. I hope her work pays off! Do you breed them for the meat Jarod? I know they're great for keeping the flies down and incubating chicken eggs but hadn't considered them for meat. I butchered a goose a few years ago but it was all breast and no leg. having never cooked goose, I roasted it (badly) when I should have probably just grilled the breast meat.

    • @JandjacresNet

      Ben Jamin, we do raise them for meat. Wonderful red meat in a muscovy. Has a very large breast and good sized legs as well.
