We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.

Our local park has this type of ducks. I didn’t realize ducks could eat mice and toads. I guess I assumed they ate bugs and plants. Thanks for sharing these 12 items to know.
Hello Angie Lincoln Dasner it must be cool having them as wild birds, although they are fairly shy, I’m wondering if you get the occasional protective bird that has had enough of people chasing them or bothering them?
I met a random muscovy duck at the park once and had never seen one before, I had no idea what he was. He was very slow and old, and only coughed at me when I sat down next to him but let me pretty close. He was a very sweet lil guy, all by himself sleeping under a bench and not hanging out with the canada geese and mallards.

The 13th thing to know is that once you've had Muscovies in your life you are permanently addicted. 😊 From the moment I could walk my parents couldn't keep me away from them. They are my favourite bird.

Elizabeth Scott is it best to have ducks socializing with another duck, I have one already and have been seeing around that having at least 2 ducks to preferably 3 is best, but I’m oblivious atm😅
Hi Trey Williams, they do like company. That’s why we say 3 birds because if one dies you still have 2 birds and can get more. They are wonderful birds 😊

Hello I got muscovys 1 boy blue pied two females magpie colour and currently have 24 ducklings they stay in the dam and spend some time in the paddock and I got chickens 4 isa browns 3 light sussex
They all sound lovely
RIP Mr. & Mrs. Muscovy- our local river pair that had roosted on the same fallen tree for several years, along with their offspring, the baby Muscovys. Mr. was found deceased in the water at his perch, about a week ago. Mrs. was found almost in the same location, yesterday morning. My grandson and I will miss them horribly and will try to keep track of the children. 😔

Thankyou, i have 9 Muscovy ducks, 3 pekins and 1 runner duck, they all get on well - i learnt early on to not lift up a duck with its bottom facing you :-)
That is a lesson you dont want to learn the hard way LOL. Being pooped on occasionally does come with the territory but best not near your face. 😜

@@brianboe3774 thats kind of a dangerous ratio. Ideally you’d want the exact opposite, one male to 4 females. 3 males can torment one female and they will even pluck her eyes out if they all attempt mating :(

If I had to go to alian planet, and take just one animal, it would definitely be a muscovy duck. Excellent mothers and good laying birds, plus meet.
Surplus Division absolutely and they can breed for so much of the year, they grow fast and the meat is really good.
They are also really cool birds 😀
My friend keeps a muscovy as a pet. An abandoned duckling came into his garage and he has kept her since. She spends her days in his garden. He has a small tub that she bathes in. She comes into his house at night to sleep. Is there any chance she can be released out into the wild again? He has had for her almost 6 months now and states that he can't keep her forever. She is very sweet and loves meal worms. He has tried to bring other ducks around her but she is not receptive. He is hoping she will go off with a group of ducks but I don't see that happening. Another issue is that she has some angel wing, which can affect her flying.

How do I try and make my Muscovy duck hatch their eggs inside their pens rather than outside ? Can I use a tyre as a nestling box what can I feel the nestling box with so as to make laying efficient
They look so weird but in the best way possible not gonna lie! Can u have them in 2 acres of land?
I thought that too before I first had my own and got to know them, now they all look so beautiful to me. Yes 2 acres is a good amount of space.
What would you recommend for keeping a larger number of Muscovys say 3 groups of 8-9 ducks to 1-2 drakes? Should they be separated into 3 pens or all kept together? Thinking of bringing them into a new site to get the bugs like flies, ticks, and mosquitoes under control. They would be kept in pens mostly/overnight but allowed in other areas to forage and eat bugs on a rotational basis. Any advice on this would be so helpful!

Little Jordan Farm hello Tammy, I am so sorry to hear about your ducks. foxes are definitely a nemesis for the homesteader, In so many parts of the world, they are so devastatingly destructive. I am happy you will be starting over with ducks, that will be very exciting. Many blessings to you and your family. It’s always so lovely to see you.
I don't own Muscovy ducks but one of the ducks in my area laid eggs next to my porch
Cool, you may see ducklings 5 weeks after she starts sitting.
Nice and informative
One pool is not enough. Multiple pools with running water. A hose will do fine. Once the pool cracks and breaks take it out so they don't cut their feet. Keep pools in the shade to slow down algae growth. Grow sweet leaf [katuk] for the ducks next to or inside their pens. They love the leaves in water and the shrub offers shade, privacy and will suck up all the excess water and mud. Fav food: thawed frozen green peas. Never trimmed a wing. If the ducks are happy, they wont fly away. Keep an eye on the politics. I keep 17 trained drakes who do fine under supervision.
I always advise 1 pool for every 5 birds and when it is 115F, 46C, algie will grow in untreated water, (no chlorine or other chemical additives) in the shade in a few hours.In cooler weather it is not an issue.
Muscovies do love leaves in the water and I agree they like plenty of plants and trees around to feel safe
.In Winter when it is raining and the ground is water logged, the only way to suck up the extra moisture from the pools is to use straw.
I disagree regarding the wing trimming, my ducks are very happy, have plenty of space and food, but I will still trim one wing - feathers (Like a hair cut), every year to protect them from the predators waiting to eat them when they fly over the fence, because they are inquisitive and dont know what a boundary fenceline is for or what is good for them.

I have two male muscovis and one big pool whit a filter and one plastic pool That is dug down to the ground, but they wont bath in any of them! You got any tips to make them bath because they are pretty dirty
My Girls, Teenage ducks and ducklings all love their baths, but my 2 Drakes wont get in either. I have tried everything to encourage them and assist them. They are perfectly happy to stand outside their water bowl and bathe from there, which keeps their faces clean and splashes water everywhere but they can look dirty and shabby, especially before the moult and then in autumn / fall they finally grow their clean new feathers. I don't know why they don't like bathing like the ladies, they did when they were young. But they are parasite free, healthy and happy.
I got 4 siblings about 5 months ago,,and they're pretty much grown . I have a 3 acre pond 40 feet from my back screened in porch. I'm just wondering how to tell drake's from the hens ?

Our town has alot of wild muscovies walking around and we have at least 5 a day come to our house for fresh water. I wanted to make a shallow pond for them with a pump but after watching your video... Looks like I should maybe just use a pool of some sort? Would they be able to get in and out of a small kiddie pool? Any treats I can give them that are healthy for them? Thank-you!
muscovy ducks LOVE cracked corn and mealworms, so you can hand them some unmediated chicken feed as a treat. The ducks shouldn’t have a problem getting in and out of the pool if it’s shallow enough for them and it’s not so high. hope this helps a bit! :)

So I have a serious question we have a Muscovy hybrid duck and when we looked online they can’t reproduce. the duck has laid eggs but she been sitting on them for months and still no hatching we think the window for laying eggs has expired and we don’t know what to do ? Any thoughts

Hello. I am a muscovy ducks raiser here in the Philippines. I love watching your videos. And it taught me a lot. Lately, i noticed that my ducks' feathers (primary feather they used when they fly) just fell on its own, at first i thought it is just shedding, but i noticed that something is wrong. Then i made my research, based on my observation and appearance of the feathers that shed on my ducks, it seams that the symptoms were like PBFD, is it possible for a muscovy ducks to aquire this disease? Wish i could show you the pictures 😔
It certainly would ne nice to be free. Now I have to be home to allow birds in and out, yo protect them.356 days a year.

I am wondering how they are with children generally and if you have any tips there?
I am hoping to get 3 or 4 in a few months when I set up for them but wondering if there are any other animals or ducks they don't get along with that you know of. Also, I am a bit concerned about rats, mice and snakes. I know you have mentioned high fences and protecting babies from Crows etc but do you have anything to say about vermon and snakes?
Welcome to Moat Cottage Christine, as with all animals there is always the exception, but I have found if Muscovy Ducks are raised in calm, safe environments, where they’re not getting chased around, they are calm and lovely. They are shy birds so they may make their noise when a human intruder (or family member) is in the yard, that is as far as it goes. I have never had one peck or bother anyone ever.
I have had a comment where they had a problem drake, but I never have.
Compared to roosters, they are big softies.
Muscovies eat Vermon like mice, small rats and I keep all their food secure, so I’m not encouraging rodents, therefore less reason for snakes to visit and I haven’t seen a snake in my yard with Muscovies, but I always keep my eyes open being in the country and in Australia.
I live on a boat. Someone dropped a pair off at my marina and someone else took them on but they are moving and it looks like I am adopting them. What should I feed them? I want them to be happy they are so sweet.
Never feed them bread! They like grass, seeds, peanuts, cracked corn, dried oats, lettuce, frozen peas and sliced up carrots small enough for them to eat, mealworms, etc. but never bread
We love our Muscovies and enjoyed your video. Do you have any recommendations on the number of Muscovy Ducks per acre? We currently have a couple dozen grazing in our vineyard and we are not sure yet about the ideal population size.
I'm not sure if you still need this info, but we have 2 acres and the town it's in has a limit of 100 poultry for the space. So 50/ac should be fine.
Pls reply me,I have a muscovy who has gone broody and today I saw her running away with a rotten egg in her bill and when I looked in the nest I noticed that there were bits of rotten egg liquid stuff on her eggs and her nest and then she cleaned it up it took her nearly 17 minutes to do it. Will it stop the eggs from hatching?she was away from her nest for that much time .So is it a problem??

I’m looking into getting Muscovy ducks. I’m thinking just 4 as we only have 1.8 acres. I’d love to have eggs for eating but the ones I will be getting are unsexed 😬 if I collect eggs in the morning, is there a chance a baby will be in there or fine to eat?
Appreciate this is a year old comment, but for anyone else watching this video late (like me!) wondering the same thing the answer is no.
Fertilised eggs need heat to develop, hence why poultry goes broody and sits on them, collecting an egg on the same day and storing it somewhere cool means it won't develop into an embryo and it will be fine to eat.

Hi Pamella, it is normal for ducks to stop laying when they are relocated to a new home. Let her settle in, feed her well and when she is relaxed and comfortable, she will lay for you too.

I know it might be a bit controversial for some people but yep, we have plenty of boys and it is time to do the deed. We've used broomstick method for our chickens but will that be OK for the ducks too? Many thanks xxx

Such lean meat - almost like venison - and have been trying all sorts of dishes - duck curry is good! As are burgers! Hope you are keeping well. xx

Ppl say they are tasty! I’d probably feel less bad eating the males if I’m honest...the females at the park are very sweet, and like to eat out of my hand 😭
Morning Hannah. Yes, the girls can be very sweet and I have one male who is huge but friendly. Although there are exceptions to the rule with the girls, some skittish and others cranky but overall hilarious with their "debating" sessions. Apart from the ones that the fox nabbed, the girls haven't been dispatched.

Hi Elisa I was just starting on keeping muscovy ducks. How do I say if a muscovu is an adult. Could u ease tell me the approx weight of a adult male and female. And could you tell me how I can tell the difference because the breeder said I have a male and a female but they botha are the same size.
Nuzath Unnissa the adult Muscovies have their full red masks. I don’t have scales now, but in one of my older muscovy videos I mentioned the weight.
The boys are very different to the girls in size -almost double.
When they are small ducklings they are similar size.

Unfortunately they're an invasive species here in Florida and we had new management at a nonprofit poison a colony of 4 generations of them in early May here in Brandon. I and many local families fed and cared for the injured ones throughout the years, including the old management of the nonprofit.
These were great birds and most will eat out of your hand and allow you to pet them.
I understand that they need to manage an 'Invasive species" but that is a brutal way to go about it. I am so sorry, it must be awful to see them taking such actions. I love Muscovy Ducks and they sound very friendly over in Florida

I have Muscovy Ducks brooding with 30 Eggs

I had two Muscovy ducklings, they turned out to be both drakes. I had kept them in with my 3 bantam chickens, my chickens are very friendly but after around 5 months these drakes were just nasty and nearly killed my chickens I had to separate them, but still caused lots of dramas. I have now sold them. I have since bought 2 larger chickens.
I do miss having the ducks (they did have their good moments)was thinking of getting just 1 or maybe 2 female Muscovy and no drake. Would they be suitable to mix in with the chickens? That is if my poor chickens have gotten over the trauma.

Kard icat I have both ducks and chickens, turkey and guinea hens as well. Oh. And a few geese. The trick is just balance and making sure everyone has enough space. You don’t want more than about 1 male per 5 or 6 females in my experience and typically I keep the male stocking rates even lower. The ladies are just so much nicer! Also, eggs. :)
Hi. i also got 2 ducklings that turned out to be drakes. They are now around 6 months old. they became very aggressive to each other and my family as we didn’t have any other animals with them. we have since gotten rid of one of them and gotten a female to be a mate to the other. the one we kept has calmed down a lot
I mix my ducks and chickens and they are fine if the numbers are in balance (not too many drakes) and also on their personalities. My drakes are very relaxed and don’t cause and dramas but when I have too many, extra teenage drakes it can get a little disruptive and then I know I can’t put off managing the situation for the peace of the homestead.
What diseases are they suspectable to? Because we use to have them but every time the eggs hatch, the ducklings will die early

It depends where you live in the world, what predators you have there and what marks are on the duck and what tracks you can find around the location (if any)

They're both ducks. They can interbreed. Like a gold tegu and a B&W tegu can breed, they're both tegus.

sherm dog no you can still have ducks, they just cost more to feed and you have to include greens from the garden (I like to give them a well balanced diet)
We don’t have grass all year as it dies of during late spring and Doesnt grow back until autumn rain (if/when we get it) 🌧 🦆 🥬

I pressure can, slow cook and roast duck, I even fry parts of it, it’s like chicken in the way you cook it.
Muscovy duck is only 2% fat, unlike other duck breeds. 😀

Angie Lincoln Dasner Muscovy ducks taste slightly stronger than chicken and it’s slightly darker meat too but i use it the same way most of the time.
Do Muscovies eat lizards and iguanas?
ThaKingzsouljahPR777 I don’t know about iguanas as I don’t have them and I haven seen them eat a lizard, but I’m sure they would gobble up the smaller lizards, that they find, before I saw.
The frogs I see them eat are as big as my Palm, (not including the arms and legs) so it takes a bit of time for them to devour a frog, so I often see that.
