Alas! They never were continued. If only they made a stock only version of the S8. 😭
*Samsung Galaxy S4: Google Play Edition Review!*
Watch on to see what ***** thinks of this sexy device...
Do you prefer the Google Play edition?
articulate, straightforward video +1
*Is the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition worth getting?*
If you weren't impressed with the original Galaxy S4 , running Samsung's own TouchWiz UI, you might just want to take a look at the Google Play Edition, then. Find out more in our video review by ***** below. Or check out *****'s written companion here: goo.gl/q137Y
Imho no. S4 still depends on samsung for updates (isn't a nexus device, it's a s4 without samsung's bloatware).
I purchased it and I have to say I love this phone. I returned the active (to many physical buttons). I'm glad I left Sony Htc and nexus 4 for this phone. Best camera on a phone yet. Click open.
David Wiita I did the same with my gs4
If u want stock Android and you don't want rooting and tweaking ,so it is ;)
I tried it and switched back. not worth losing that cool features that come with the stock rom
My first Android device was the Galaxy S2 and a few months later I sold it to get a Galaxy Nexus. After a few days of using the Nexus I started missing some of the cool features of touchwiz. In December I got the Note 2 and I couldn't be happier. Touchwiz is awesome with all the extra cool features. Stock Android is nice, but it's just basic.
Not generally a Samsung fan, but this could very well be my next phone over the iPhone 5S/6.
A stock un-rooted phone is like a borrowed car. You can use it but you can't do anything to it. So the CM installer would essentially be replacing the engine on that car. If it's still borrowed you won't be able to do it. Once you root the device it becomes yours and no longer borrowed so you may do what you please with it.
Rooting a Device is pretty safe. The tricky part and the part where most bricks occur is when flashing a ROM. The CM installer just makes that part safe and easy.
I like touchwiz more than boring stock android.
Yeah lags heavily overtime
I'm just glad that there is sgs4 support within slim roms.
Not exactly. Touchwizz and Sense integration is deeper then launcher and icons. Almost everything in system is redesigned and changed.
These stock editions are for people who can't root their phones. However, I'm really happy, that Google released those editions - thanks to that custom roms will become much better.
Just got my hands on this phone and I'm in love!!! I was also able to download WatchOn to make use of the IR blaster!! Yay!!! :D
Mine just shipped today and it's on its way! Yay! ^_^
Unlike everyone else TouchWiz isn't laggy for me. My S3 has the 4.3 update and I'm glad to say "about fucking time SAMSUNG". Everything is smooth, color reproduction/contrast has improved, the notification bar is not only translucent, but a little brighter and in white...pretty much a Galaxy S4 without the smart gestures and 13mp camera. I've used Stock before but to me it just gets old after a few weeks...and I have used: Nova, Everything Home, TouchWiz, and even the 4.4 Google home launcher on Phandroid.com . I guess you rather love TouchWiz or you hate it
Nice. Love the finale.
Agreed. While some of those features are cool, I see them as something you would do when you 1st got it, but that they would lose there novelty relatively quick. I'm planning on picking this one up next month and can't wait.
Well the GE version would likely get the new software updates first because the normal S4 would need a new version of TouchWiz.
Doubt it. The Spen software integration is really down deep in the Note 2 and Note 1. If they do make it, they're just making a stylus enabled tablet. You know, those capacitive ones? None of the OS would be enabled integrated with their pen then :s. I guess it's possible, but I'd doubt it. They market the SPen and it's software A LOT.
So what happens when 5.0 comes out? ;)
Google Edition S4 will get it much faster than the regular one and who knows what features the new version will bring...
Ah the question, is who here thinks the Google S4 will sell well? Its definitely nice to have more choices, and I imagine as Google updates come out faster than Samsung, HTC, Wicked, Foxhound, Omega, Cyanogenmod, AKOP etc so that if you're not into flashing, then this is a good option to get the newest OS as quickly as possible.
What are the other advantages of buying the S4 Nexus?
Yeah thats what alot of people do but your settings menu and the overall UI are still touchwiz you just changed your homescreen.
Love your reviews
Samsung should release their features as exclusive-to-galaxies apps on the play store, so if I like Air View and Multi Window and I want the stock Android I could get that
i dont get why people freak out over stock you can just install say nova launcher it looks exactly the same with just a few settings changes.
Many people talk about how expensive this phone is, but you just pay $600/700 for it, while we in Brazil pay like $1.200,00...
I dont think so, I think they're for people who like a stock experience. If you bought a windows pc, would you want a manufactures theme installed? Or would you want a stock experience? I would like this better because its not only more likely to be updated often, but is likely to be more consistent. To be completely honest im an iOS user. I like a stock experience, and so would a lot of people.
Basically the entire operating system and the experience. Google Play uses real, normal Android as it was meant to be while the regular uses Samsung's TouchWiz ontop of the Android to try and "Samsungify" the experience. If you get the Google Play edition you'll pretty much lose all of the GS4 features like Smart Pause/Scroll, Air View/Gesture, S Health, Watch TV, all the camera modes, Story Album, and etc.
Totally useless buy, any S4 can turn into that with an AOSP firmware... and you can find the device for less than the Play store's price :)
Well, as far as I know, they are priced the same as branded versions off-contract. I'm not from the US, and I don't know if they are going to sell those outside America.
Anyway, you can easily buy contract version of HTC One or Galaxy S4(the LTE Snapdragon version - i9505) and install either this stock version or tuned CyanogenMod with minimum effort.
You may get the same look. But not the speedy software update once new Android version is available. Though I admit that samsung is the fastest Android OEM in terms of software update.
I wouldn't bet on it.
Stock look with tw features would be awesome
no doubt the extra features are a plus but the overall UI and OS is almost universally considered better
Before I got a nexus, I had another android tablet. I think that nexus phones are good because of the price to power ratio.
The benefits of Stock Android go far beyond what a launcher does.
Not true, I use a launcher on my s3 which I enjoy, but the menus and other system UI is still in Samsung's flavor. IMO, these phones are for individuals who do NOT want to mess around with ROMS and want to have an almost Nexus experience and/or individuals who are not due for an upgrade. I fall into both categories, therefore it's a win win for me.
I must say, I had a nexus 4 and the HOLO ui was great on it, but I think Super AMOLED just makes it look much better than what LCDs can make it look. But anyways, I Enjoy Sense 5 on the HTC One
One thing i dont like about stock android is that there are no battery saving options, the galaxy S4's and HTC's One battery will be terrible
Kinda bothered by this question. Who OTAs the Google editions? Samsung/HTC/sony or Google? Thanks.
Faster updates? Not as ugly (subjective), doesn't slow down as much (tw can really hamper a phone down).
Of course there are downsides; but that really depends on if you like all the (usually) gimmicky features skins have.
I've used touchwiz and I'm not a big fan. I'm thinking no bloatware, no touchwiz, and current android with no rooting required. I like where Google is going with this.
Do you think there will be a Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 some time after it is released?
I thought that would be enough for me on my S3, but do I hate that navy blue theme that has got nothing to do with the HOLO going on over the rest of the phone. Turning up/down the volume is a painful experience, that ugly square taking over the screen. The "clear" button under the notification shade is also a sore thumb.
You should make a video of the original s4 vs s4 active vs s4 Google play edition
They delivered after I got the touchwiz s4
My only curiosity is that why the GPE models of the S4 and HTC One are in White/Silver only. It might be nice for some that bought or are looking to buy these to get the different colored bodies.
I still prefer the regular s4. I just use nova launcher to feel stock android's snappiness without losing Multi Window, Pop up play, air gestures and the awesome camera features. And I hate stock android's notification panel and the inability to close all running apps at once.
I have the original S4 and after seeing this video I'm not upset I don't have the Google play edition. To lose alot of your features just ain't worth it to me.
Actually, I paid less for my GS4 at $629. I'm surprised that the Google Play edition was more expensive.
throughout the entire video I thought that you were reviewing Android 4.3 on GT-I9505!!!
"The only way to get it is to buy a nexus deVice..." WRONG
Well, not really. They're the same just supporting the stock Android experience instead of the customized UI that phone brands create.
Even if you just change your launcher, it will still still not be anywhere as snappy all around. And Stock Android just looks so much cleaner and better than TouchWiz anyway, EVEN if it does not have as much features.
Touchwiz is far more likely to slow down over time, and under heavier load. You don't have to get all aggressive towards the "purists." You can get the Touchwiz version, or the pure version. Choices are good.
They'd most likely receive updates at the same time.
I'm guessing they're going to be the same price, right?
I'm also not from the US, but I doubt I'll be considering purchasing one of these devices anyway.
I miss Josh so much
Haha couldn't have said it better myself. My friend recently rooted his galaxy s3 after waiting for his warranty to run out. When I asked him what was the first thing he did after he rooted his phone, he said that he "installed this software that made his phone's interface look different." He referred to it as the "magic of rooting". Unfortunately, he was only referring to a launcher (a windows phone 8 one at that!) which he thought he needed root to install. He had an iPhone 4S before the S3.
I got my s3 a day before the s4 was released. No one at verizon could bother to tell me about that...
what is the difference between regular and google play edition?
Son muy buenos los dispositivos con Android puro ya que tienen una ventaja, son muy actualizables.
These stock Android editions of phones are basically just for people that don't understand what a launcher is.
guys stop this !! s4 with or without stock android is very very fast and smooth its one of a hightes end devices in 2013 ... if normal s4 is slow then what a bout other devices stones for example ??
Also does not work on US Cellular, Verizon, and so on?...at this time?...
So less features for more money? Sounds great
So cyanogenmod is basically also for people that don't know what a launcher is?
i am glad i bought a NEXUS, i love it !
Is that Mr. Rose
I dont see anyone spending so much when they could create the experience on any s4 with light computer skillz.
Touchwhiz was using alot of internal Memory for his app. With the google edition how much space do you have in the phone?
if only this was being sold at the nexus 4 price
Someone please explain how stock is better than touchwiz? Aside from the theme and icon styles, you can customize just as much in tw than in stock...plus all the bonus hardware and sw features from samsung...there if you want them...so please "purists" explain how stock is supposedly a superior experience over tw...
Yeah you're correct.
And if there are when it will be ??
I installed Nova launcher prime + Some jelybean widgets. It looks exactly like that plus i ge to keep the touchwhiz features :)
There are some people who don't care about all those flashy features......
The battery life on Google edition has any difference with the original?
Wthhhh so ppl tht already have the s4 wont get this update
just how much faster is this than touchwiz?
How about performance ? It's is much faster or only the animations are quicker?
Best Vanilla Jelly bean experience in on nexus 4. Samsung and HTC are great but with there custom UI.
I would rather have a buttery smooth and reliable experience than have these "Wave your hand" - "Scroll with your eye" features any day. Stock all the way...
now whats the point of this phone on stock google when all the built in sensors and bells and whistles dont work, its just beyond me. its so stupid but if I am wrong please correct me.
Well no, if you know what Cyanogenmod is you're most likely going to know what a launcher is.
Root, and Flash an AOSP rom or CyanoginMod Rom. I have my S3 running Carbon Rom, It's an Android 4.3 Rom and I love it. Just do some research before you try to root and install a custom Rom.
we want HTC ONE Google Edition Review Please and compare it with this.
Google updating features through apps now, so android update not as important
like the video, thats professionalism .
Sucks that the additional features from the original S4 are gone in this version. I would rather buy the original S4 and install nova launcher stock jellybean theme than buying this Google Play edition.
can you change your greeting ?
Why buy this when you can just use a launcher?
Play edition is a cool idea buy its too pricey might as well use N.O.V.A laucher or root it
It's like buying S3 and throw in AOSP/CM rom.
I own a S4 for it features and extra's
Google edition hmm...
Is it possible to download any of Samsung's stock apps for the Google edition S4(i.e. WatchOn and/or camera software)?
release this internationally Google...pretty PLEASE?
I really don't think that Stock Android is that useful and better than others.
is there LED notification
Yeah but it will never run as smooth as the google edition does
Is it possible to install Touchwiz software on galaxy s4 google edition ?
will this bring back all the touchwiz features which is built for the s4 such as the camera modes, gesture ... etc ?
But not for long...?
the new cyanogen mod installer just turned my galaxy into a nexus ^.^
