Love love love bees! 🥰 Also, I had NO IDEA bees recognized us by our faces. I assumed they thought we were interchangeable. Aww, now I love them even more.
Oh My gosh, I am blown away. What a great educational video Jill. This is an amazing brave young man you have working these bees. I have learned so much about bees just from this short clip. Thank you for videoing this adventure and sharing it with all of us.
I've had bees for 5 years now. Piece of advice for Jill...put your hair in a bun and cover it with one of your bandeaus. FIrst time you get that velcro in your hair or your hair stuck in the zipper, you will lose a chunky chunk! :D SO EXCITED for you! You will see the glory of God, our amazing creator in the hives the more you learn! YAY!!
How cool is that to see inside your beehive! 🐝 I love trying different types of honey. I've not had Goldenrod before. I look forward to more of your beekeeping experience 💚
That was fun to listen to him share his knowledge of bees. I have always talked to the bees in my garden assuming they would come to know my voice or my scent, but I never realized they could recognize my face. I do always turn toward them when they are near, and talk to them. Maybe this is why I have never been stung in my garden? I've had bees land on me, but I always thought I was just as a stopping off place for them.
Congratulations on your bee's over wintering. I agree Jill, put up your hair especially as your summer gets hot...sweating in a beesuite your hair gets in the way in your veil.
WOW this was a super interesting video and I've learned more about bees from Shawn than I have from anyone else I've watched. This was awesome actually.
I LIVE BEES!!! I am going on my third year keeping bees and I was just like you in the beginning and by the second year I was having homeschool families come over every week so they could watch me do my inspections and learn about the bees. 🐝 🥰
I loved this bee video! Thanks for sharing your journey on the new homestead. I'm really looking forward to following along with the bees as I'm hoping to start keeping bees someday as well. Jill, you'll be comfortable with them in no time!
Fascinating🥰I’m with you though I would be skittish too. One step at time. I love that we are learning with you. It’ll be fun to see a bee video from you a year or two from now.
This was very informative today. I loved the info on bees. It looks so funny seeing you and Nathan all dressed up in your suits while the guy who's actually handling the bees is wearing nothing at all including gloves. Cracked me up.🌿🌸🌿
That is ok Jill. All respect for those that raise bees and keep bee hives. It is something I never had a desire to do. I guess because I have been stung alot as a kid. It was a really interesting video.
We have been beekeeping bees now for 3 years and love it. It is very rewarding! They fascinate me. Rule of thumb when you see 7 out of the 10 frames covered with bees add a box. I wish you luck. Last year we harvest a little over 700 pounds off of 13 hives. The year before we got 1000 pounds so it just depends on the flow of nectar. In that year.
My mother had a fit when my husband went to her flower wall with bug spray and told him "DON'T you dare hurt those bees, we need them in order to make out tomatoes develop". One fell in her pool and was struggling to get out, so Gene(my husband) emptied his solo cup and let the bee crawl into the cup and took it to the flowers then said "the bee sting will be easier to deal with than hearing mom fuss about her bees". Gene loves his mother-in-law.
Congrats on overwintering.. you will get more use to the bees over time.. I am coming into second season keeping bee. It’s so addictive.. have two hives currently and two more ordered.. wish you all the best with your bees this year.. and that you all get enough to support your 3 qtr a month habit😁😁..
We have bees also and another bee keeper told us you can use liquid smoke & water in a 50/50 ratio in a spray bottle for the smoking and calming bees down. I'm in Ca and our fire risk is huge, so using a liquid instead of real smoke is a huge plus!! Just FYI 😁
Ohh this brought me back to when I was a beekeeper. Joe and I raised honeybees for 16 years! I loved looking for the queen, watching the worker bees come flying in with pockets of pollen on their back legs. The babies emerging and the queen doing her thing. I could sit for an hour and watch them. We gave it up 5 1 /2,years ago. My husband lost 4 fingers on the carding machine we use to process fiber. When that happened I was a bit overwhelmed and was not sure how I could handle all the hives myself. I wasn’t sure what capacity Joe would be able to work. I have to say… he is full steam ahead with the farm and fiber mill. He amazes me! You would never know he lost 4 fingers on his dominant hand. I often forget. Anyhow, it is kind of unnerving when you are working with a hive and they start hanging out on your face screen. When they were all over me I had to just block it out of my mind. If I gave to much thought to what was going on on my suite and face netting I would have certainly freaked. I miss watching, processing and making candles. The smell of sweet honey filled our kitchen. I think I should come work at your farm!! Bees, babies and sourdough!! Sound good to me. Enjoy your day! God Bless.
Awesome video on the bee hive. Very interesting, gets me to thinking about wanting to start a bee hive, but I know there’s more to bee keeping then what was shown today. Looks like it be very enjoyable venture. Thanks for the info.
Bees absolutely fascinate me! I am still a little scared of them too, so don't feel bad. We have a honey farm not too far from us and I am praying those guys come visit our little backyard garden this summer!! :)
That’s okay Jill I’m the same way when it comes to bees I love what they do to make honey and so glad your bees are healthy but that’s as close as I would get to them glad you showed us though now I want to see the process in getting the honey spun out of the combs👍
My grandfather raised bees. He had several hives. I remember watching him as a young child working around the hives, and harvesting honey. He made the best whipped honey butter. I wanted to own bees when I grew up. As luck would have it, it turns out I'm allergic! 1st bee sting was traumatic. I refuse to give up my garden, but have had much respect over the years when they're are busy around my blooms! Great excuse for putting my feet up lol.
Very interesting. Jill I'm with you I would not feel comfortable around them, but maybe with time. My question is honey really good for you? I have always wanted to know. Thank you Shawn.
Jill you are so cute!! I love bees to but I would be sacred of getting stung too! They are so beneficial to our gardens!! Everything is getting greener!! I can’t wait to see WWF all bloomed and decorated out!!
Hi Jill .. I was thinking about your idea to get sheep to graze down bracken.. I follow a site Simple Natural Living .. they have homestead in Idaho.. they have Babydoll Sheep .. delightful little characters..they are small, gentle playmates for their kids .. recently posted a video talking about how much they love living with these gentle sheep.
That was pretty cool to see, even though I would be as skittish around them as you were, Jill. I can't believe your friend didn't suit up before handling them!
My Great Grandmother told me... "YOU ONLY FEAR WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND ".. Please go watch Lasy Lead and Leadfarmer they are certified bees keepers and Lady Lead raises Queens... way too kool.. Also chuck on a thick headband, and having your hair in a bun to keep it from getting hot and sticky on your face and neck, having temps of 35-40 celcius where we are you quickly become a hot mess in your suit

Your channel just got a lot more interesting with honeybees

I love the way Nathan is thinking, how many hives do you need to feed your family for the year?!? Great question!
He is so knowledgeable! What an awesome friend to have around!
This is so fascinating!!! Also, that guy is so brave getting in there with no gloves! LOL!
Jill I am 💯 with you. That said that was crazy fascinating to me!! I feel like I just learned so much. Thank you Shawn and team
I have always wanted to tend bees. I find them extremely fascinating and they always speak to the wisdom of the Creator!

Great video 🐝🐝🐝
Way to be brave Jill. You got this💪
Same!!! I am terrified of bees. I have been stung enough times to know how it feels.
Amazing knowledge Sean 🥰 and fascinating to see and watch how the 🐝 🐝’s work together 😀 thoroughly enjoyed this vlog guy’s 🌼🐝🌼
That was pretty cool to see, even though I would be as skittish around them as you were, Jill. I can't believe your friend didn't suit up before handling them!
Super interesting!
Oh! Jill! I'm making the same noise as you're making from those things with a million bees on them come out!
That was an amazing video. I really learned a lot watching it.
So interesting! I learned a lot🌻💜🌻
I didn't catch how many hives for about 12 qts. Of honey. I think he said 60 lb bucket per hive.
Yes he said a 5 gallon bucket from one hive on a good year..
I got a NUC of bees today!!
Best video 😊
Did you feed them through the winter?
We did not
I have heard that bees help keep wasps away. Is that true? I would take bees over wasps any day.
If a bee stings you put a small hill of wet baking soda on it. Keep applying and before you know it the bite will be gone. 🙏 💙
Would love to know how to work bees!!
My Great Grandmother told me...
