I'll never forget opening my first pack of sunflower seeds and thinking they look just like the sunflower seeds you eat at a baseball game and it just really blew my mind that I had zero idea where food comes from and now I have 72 sunflowers sprouting, what a beautiful journey 🥰❤️🔥🌻
Golly! Spot ON!! I was a teacher. I LOVED my students.... I cannot get behind the new agenda. I just can't. I often wish I could re-close my eyes... but it is impossible once they have been opened. I am so fortunate that my husband works and we have a 32 acre hobby farm. I am learning to garden, milking our goats and cow, and bake! I am enjoying it! This is NOT how I was raised. I was taught to work and told this was how it should be. My cup was not filled in the sense of my family... I felt like I was failing my calling. Anyways, Super proud of you and thanks for sharing!
Oh. The mulch does the weeding work for us, we don't remove it at the end of the season. It breaks down and adds to the soil's structure, nutrients, and health. I haven't seen anyone not mulch before but I hope it works well for you! It may be more work not to.
I feel this! I was a single mom for ten plus years and got used to being the money maker. I did small gardening on the side but when covid hit, I lost my job at a multi million dollar company as a food and beverage purchasing manager . My fiance and me started talking about how me being home made so much more sense. Now we grow veggies , meat and get to have my kiddo homeschooled again. I'm so grateful for that shift even if it felt crazy for me at the time of transition
I love the tangerine sky rose 🌹 I would love to garden full time but I can't so I still gotta work full time. Someday I hope to do gardening full time.
I had great results growing garbanzo beans from dried organic beans from the store last year. You can pick the green pods off when the beans have formed and roast them in a cast iron skillet (in the pods), toss with sea salt and a little hot sauce if you like it. Tasty and easy snack.
I have never mulched my garden before but thought I'd try it this year to help retain moisture in the heat of our summer more than for the weed control. I've been shredding up any cardboard around and using that and the worms seem to really love it!!!
Here in the desert it is necessary to mulch really well because of the heat. It’s supposed to be 114F this weekend in Tempe AZ🥵It hasn’t rained since February so everything just dries out super fast
The Tangerine Sky Roses exploding around your yellow garden door look like a scene from a fairy tale. I'm slightly concerned about food shortages, but more concerned about where my food comes from. In the last four years, I have changed the sources where I buy the things I cannot grow or raise. Love, love, love chick peas! Chick pea salad, roasted chick peas, hummus...yum!
Girl I hear you! I've been in corporate food service my entire adult life I want out so bad. Currently fixing up my resume and sending it everywhere that has nothing to do with restaurant work . Mostly so I can have a better schedule for my family needs and so I can focus more on our growing efforts ! Thanks for sharing!
Same here! I’ve been in the food industry as a chef and pastry chef and I have been taking web developer/software engineer classes for eight months so my husband and I can work remotely and buy our future farm! Highly recommend as it is an industry FULL of ex-servers and cooks!
Your story has similarities to mine. From 2008-2013 I worked as an elementary substitute teacher. I liked the students I taught and the art of teaching itself, but hated the curriculum and the work environment. I wanted to teach in a museum, as they’ve been a passion of mine for years. So, after much thought and not listening to other people (they didn’t understand), I left my job in 2013 and went back to school. I ended up working in a museum for 5 years. Now I’m an online ESL teacher, where I set my own hours and work from home. I’m also starting my own business, launching hopefully June 1st. Sometimes you just have to take the leap, and see what happens.
When my 5 kids were young, it didn't pay for me to work full time with the cost of daycare (my husband worked out of town). Instead I grew a large garden, raised pigs and chickens. Now that I'm old (lol), I do love my job, but wish I could "farm" full time (dreaming!). But I am the sole money maker now so it is not an option until our house is payed off. I do love my job though, I work from home and pretty much set my own hours. This allows me a lot of time where I can take care of my garden (I am a lazy gardener, so not much tending is required), and picking and preserving the harvest.
Yes thx for answering that question plz answer more business like questions like: how did you get started more specifically, your business goals and any things you needed to learn to running your business ☺️
I love when you find your groove and just share your thoughts, you start vlogs in what seems a planned rehearsed but slightly uncomfortable, when you settle in, as you get into it, you start just sharing you and get so in to it, that’s so delightful! You got it just be you! You rock! ✌🏻🙏🏼❤️
I very happy you learned at a young age to not stay in a job you don’t “love”. I was raised go to college and get a good paying career. I’ve been unhappy behind a desk for 32 years. My heart is to be outside. Sitting all day has also taken a toll on my back but guess what, when I work outside and I’m more active it hurts less. I’m still working in an office working toward my goal of being home and starting my own business. I have a few ideas and once my garden is planted will have time to comment more to this. Hopefully will get most of my garden in this weekend, now that our last frost date has past. Your family is lucky to have you home and your girls will remember their mom being there and working for her family. My heart is happy for you. You are blessed to have a husband with the same vision. Mine helps me when asked but it is not a passion. Although lately he has been helping me stock up on canning supplies. He is now seeing the food shortages and realizes we could be in trouble soon. God bless and much continued success. You and you videos are a bright part of my day. ❤
It is a real paradigm shift to value community and social advantages over economic value. It can also take time and effort to be able to articulate that need to your loved ones - I'm still working on it. 😉
I’m only halfway through this video and I already completely resonate with your personal journey with work. I have a great company I work for, with great team leads and co workers…. But I’m not fulfilled. There is a yearning to grow and create. We are just building our homestead on raw wooded mountain land so there is ALOT to do to get to where you are with the space you have. I’m slowly learning how to revitalize the soil and learn what grows well here. I refuse to mass clear land so I’m working within the landscape of the land. The Lord has given us so much untapped potential on this land, it takes time and effort and $ to build. I am blessed to work from home but I still itch to get out there and do! Someday I will be at the market selling my herbal healing blends, my fresh eggs, my baby propagation projects with cacti and succulents, to create my own organic wild mushroom spores to sell to others. I desire to teach others about what is on this land! What is growing here naturally and what can be grown naturally, for long term sustainability and health. Plants are out educational center and I want them to teach me, in turn teaching others! To have the grocery store (minus the processed bad foods!) all on 10.5 acres of land….my passion, my dream. I am looking forward to the Lords prompting to let the mainstream job go, and to grow into what HE has in store for me. Thank you for sharing yourself and family to all of u💕
I NEEDED this video today. I stumbled across your channel by chance this morning and found this video and I felt like you were talking right to me. I have been thinking for the last 6 months or so I just want out of the daily grind of commute, work, kids, repeat. Hearing you say it was the best choice you made is so reassuring. I am trying to buckle down this year, get things paid down and I hope I can see myself at least going to part time soon. Thank you for this inspiration, love your channel already!
My experience growing garbanzo beans was a lot of work for a small amount of results. What I got was delicious but not worth the garden space. I live in Illinois so maybe you had better luck where you live?
I can't stop thinking that I need those overalls. Where'd you get them? I've been self-employed for over a decade and I love it. It's not for everyone, but if it is right for you...it's the best!
I do weeding/watering Wednesday. (Probably got idea from you) Nice to hear you share some of your childhood exposure to gardening and canning. Thanks for sharing.
I am a cheap and lazy gardener, lol. I don't buy mulch, I use what I have. Shavings from my chicken coop (put on in the fall, the manure is fine by Spring), chopped up leaves from the fall. I keep the mulch on year round, so do not have to replace it much. It does eventually break down into compost, and then into dark rich soil. I very seldom have any weeds popping up, generally only around small seeds I plant where I have to pull the mulch back until they grow up and can be tucked in again. Good luck, I hope your gardens does well for you!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been feeling my life's purpose is to grow medicine for community! How to get there from where I am is the scary part. But this is a reminder to not be driven by fear and have faith.
I use thick layer of fresh grass clippings for mulch. I've noticed it keeps weeds down, less bug issues and maintains good moisture. it's a great source of nitrogen too. The worms in the soil just underneath love it too
I quit my job this past January with the same feelings and calling you had and it’s the best decision my husband and I have made!! Really expanding the vegetable garden this year and doing a trial year with my cut flowers to hopefully expand and create more into a business by next year. Thank you for your channel and encouraging content!! Love that your trying chick peas. It’s on my list to try too!!
I planted dry chick peas right out of the grocery bag I had in my pantry ... lovely Lacey leaved vine and loved eating them fresh shelled in the garden!
I feel ya on this one. Each day I go to work feeling incomplete. Then coming home and there is just so many projects that it is starting to wear on me. I really appreciate this video. Thank you so much. Very inspiring and can't wait to do this full time.
New people wonting to know what to do could start small at home first to see if it what they realy what that wont before giving up a job may find don"t like the work in all sorts of weather can it is hard at times but i love it wish you all the best
I guess I should be thankful because I've not noticed food shortages where I live. The only thing I've noticed missing are Jumbo Eggs, but there are plenty of all the other sizes so we're not short eggs.
I miss my accounting job. It didn’t make me happy but it was black and white and I was treated like an adult. Dang COVId job eliminations now I’m verbally abused in a call center every day and it is absolutely horrible. It’s so hard to do what I love, garden, I swear the plants are affected by the negativity that clings to me from that place. Do not belong in a giant company but too scared for another layoff I can’t leave. Cannot even wait for the next chapter. Thank you for the little escape in your content!
Be proud of yourself. When you were laid off you got up and found another job, maybe not a fun one, maybe not a satisfying one, maybe one you hate, but you got up as a responsible person and took what was available at that moment. Kudos to you. I know you probably know that the callers are not angry with you, just venting about a frustrating situation, but it's still hard. We need call centers so you are very important. You will find something you are more suited for and it may take time, but it's got to be there.
HeyJill, where do you get your Eucalyptus seeds? We need some to freshen up our house. It's an old house almost like my grandma's. Wanted to tell you that you've inspired me to get into growing Zinnias this year! 🙏 💙 Kathi
Thankyou (again) for your transparency and a no-nonsense, non-hate filled towards all being the "government's fault" approach to meeting today's challenges head on. Refreshing! 🌻💚🌿
Good for you! I just took early retirement last week to farm full time! Between milking goats and planting etc...there’s no time left. I hope to replace my income with farming and part time jobs....but even if I have to sell everything I own and live in my old 5th Wheel...I would never go back! Americans who can possibly let go and start living, should do it!
I loved what I did for a living for the most part. I was a dog groomer. I left last summer after over a decade due to several reasons but, mostly due to a health issue that ended up being exacerbated by the job as time went on. I have been a bit lost and still don't know what I'm going to do now. If anyone has any advice or can relate, I'd appreciate a comment 💜
I opted to stay home with my youngest until recently, I went back to work as a vet and I’m finding it so hard to manage a garden and work 10+ hour days 😬
My family enjoys the simpler and loving life since leaving the countryside rat race with its stressors, the noisy animals, inclement weather, and living in isolation. Now, we enjoy meeting fellow like-minded close and friendly communities in the city, who also believe in self-sufficiency, and striving for living in peace with everyone - city and country. If either don't like us, I leave them up to God.
I didn’t quit my job, my employer quit me after 32 years of dedicated service (I was downsized). I’m now working part time - started my own business and I’m happier than I’ve been in many years. This is my second year gardening and I enjoy it so very much. I’m only growing enough for fresh food this season and as I learn I hope to grow larger quantities for more abundant crops. The mental health benefit associated with seeing your seeds grow into plants, nurturing them and having those plants produce is so satisfying. thank you for sharing your message and your garden journey.
You need a chipdrop between your raised beds! I had a boggy muddy mess between mine but did a bunch of woodchips and now it’s walkable all the time. The garden looks wonderful 😍
If it's wading water like they said I'd worry the wood chips would float/wash away. It happened in my flower beds that were in a spot that would do that after a rain at my last house. But...my entire yard is very boggy at my new house and now I wanna find out if we can get chip drops here because I would like to try this, especially in one particular place! Thanks for sharing this tip! Did you put weed cloth under it?
I would love to stay home and grow all my own food. Being single makes that hard to pay bills, lol. I'm still in the learning stage and just trying to keep it going.
Love chickpeas 😍 and you make me want to grow them because I love hummus I could eat it by the mounds it's so delicious especially with roasted tomatoes I'm just saying you're making my mouth water 🤤😋♥️
That's so funny, I was employed in the hospital setting for many years and now over 12 years in the child care industry and have been "hobby "farming for many years selling excess and fiber, and honey bee products here and there. Yet I still find myself needing and wanting to do it full-time. It kills me to be inside when I should be outside. After recently going through a breakup and losing 2 of my children to their biological mother, I'm running the farm on my own. I'm back to the drawing board how to do this better and more efficiently and profitable. I have alpacas, chickens, geese, pigs, and horses, so compost is abundant for me. My soil is so black and fertile. I'm looking into growing profitable flowers and hard to find or unique produce in my community. I just have to set up a plan of action and grow and go. Your a glimmer of light through the people telling me "your crazy, you can't make money in farming" get ride of the farm and get a real job. Thank you for your inspiration, love your videos ❤️.
I desperately want to quit my job and work from the farm! Trying to figure it all out and what will be profitable. I am giving myself this year to figure it all out.
Girl I’ve been there. Make a plan and make it happen is my advice. If you need help making a plan, I’ve helped so many start a profitable side business that can become full time. Here’s a link to a consultation if you think you would be interested. I only offer it to my email subscribers at the moment but it sounds like you’re ready for a change. I would love to help you get started stan.store/whisperingwillowfarm/p/book-a-11-call-with-me-qn9th
I am all about a leap of faith, but how do you pay for insurance? Medical and home/auto. I struggle with that because I have great insurance with my job and it's so expensive as an individual.

I make and sell hummus. You can make different flavors from any kind of bean. You can get quite creative with it
Kudos to you for taking that big risk. It is a huge leap of faith, ht you did it. Wonderful.

I've wanted to try growing garbanzo beans. I Didn't have any luck with lentils and quinoa.
Hi Jill and Nate and the Girls. I have not seen you guys in a while. We have been looking after our Grandson during the Holidays.
Hello and welcome back
I started weed wednesdays!! Thanks such great advise. I also do feed fridays!!!
Love it
I would love for you to go into more detail about your strategy for growing peppers.
Thank you for sharing this with us, Jill.
Jill , your garden is so beautiful !!! 💘 it so much !!! 🙏 💙
Just preordered your book I can’t wait
to get it! 😊
Thankyou (again) for your transparency and a no-nonsense, non-hate filled towards all being the "government's fault" approach to meeting today's challenges head on. Refreshing! 🌻💚🌿
Great video! I always enjoy your content!
Love, love, love your shorts!!! Where did you get them!? 🤗 also love listening to you while I’m doing stuff around the house!
The garden is looking awesome! It’s a lot of work but well worth it!
Absolutely!! You make those dreams come true
Can you do a video about growing eucalyptus? How long does it take? Is it perennial?
Great encouragement💜
Chick peas used as green so good. I love using it in my rice instead peas
I always find my answers in the garden. Maybe yours are there, too 💚
Great opportunity to find your identity 💙 I realised that I was always finding mine in what I was doing, and not in just being who I am
It’s funny to me being a new gardener and hearing all these strict guidelines of gardening and then see Jill do the opposite. Rules? Don’t know her 🤣
Hahahah! Yes!
I opted to stay home with my youngest until recently, I went back to work as a vet and I’m finding it so hard to manage a garden and work 10+ hour days 😬
Make it a family affair. I work full time nights. My kids always help me.
Jill will you be doing a video on how to make salsa? Would love to see one. Thank You.😍😍😍
So you are not using leaves as mulch anymore? I thought I saw a video where you said that was your favorite
What is that white net in the flowers? Is that for plant spacing or does it help the flowers stay up?
You’re definitely inspirational. Have you been able to completely replace your previous income with farming?
Farming + teaching
Selling sunflowers alone would have replaced my income if you have the market for them
@@WhisperingWillowFarm Thank you so much for this info. It totally motivates me.
Hi Kiddo I love your sharing 😍🥰
Each garbanzo bean when harvested needs to be shelled
Love chickpeas 😍 and you make me want to grow them because I love hummus I could eat it by the mounds it's so delicious especially with roasted tomatoes I'm just saying you're making my mouth water 🤤😋♥️
Hopefully you have a way to protect your property during a food shortage because people will take advantage of you if they know you have it.
They wouldn’t make it far onto the property 😉
We have question new gardeners here . When it rains a lot do you let plants be rained on and don’t worry about it or do you protect it .
Love this and love you🌻💜🌻
That's so funny, I was employed in the hospital setting for many years and now over 12 years in the child care industry and have been "hobby "farming for many years selling excess and fiber, and honey bee products here and there.
I would love to help you get started

Can you grow beans in the leaf green stalk?
How do you keep the ants off of your sunflowers? I’ve been plantings lord this year with seeds to plant my 2nd plants later in the season.
Are you going to grow sesame seeds for the tahini in your hummis?
I am all about a leap of faith, but how do you pay for insurance? Medical and home/auto. I struggle with that because I have great insurance with my job and it's so expensive as an individual.
We don't use health insurance. We use chiropractic care and holistic practices
Does your book teach us how to use our garden space and succession plant.
I feel like I don't utilize my space well
