Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) I have made videos on multiple cameras (nikon, canon, sony, and even panasonic) ... i just happen to shoot nikon more:)
You are right, once I discovered it years ago it's the very first thing I do with a new body! Reset the focus, turn it off the shutter button and switch it to the back! And it works for ALL the photography anyone might do, just remember that's the focus when you use your wide angle lenses (which I forgot when I first did it) as just about everything looks like it's in focus with a wide angle.
This was super helpful, thank you! I'll be at the airport tomorrow to take photos, and this should help a ton because my camera loves to focus on the fence rather than the aircraft itself.
Thank you immensely...it’s just what I was looking for to assign autofocusing on my older Canon. I was doing back button focusing the hard way-it worked but I kept thinking this older Canon could be set to reassign the focus function-you did it-it works perfectly on my camera. Be well and thanks again.
I know this video is 4 yrs old, but having inherited a T1i recently, I am trying to set this up like my D7000. I am happy to say this works nicely. I can't wait to use it. Thanks.
I have to thank you.... Not only did that video really help but it also finally allowed me to figure out how to switch switch off the strobe focus assist on the built in flash
Thanks for the post/feedback Kevin and glad to be of help!:) Yes, the focus assist light can be annoying depending on the situation. I have never experience any significant focusing issues when disabled:).
I couldn't find it in my manual and you knocked it out of the park for my rebel t7i! It was on page 12 in my menu but I figured it might be a little different. Thank you!
I’ve been doing a lot of research into this topic. I’ve found that some are in favor of it, some not so much. But you have explained it so clearly that I’ll be able to decide for myself. I bought that very camera just a week ago, by the way. I’m having a lot of fun with it. I really learn a lot from your videos. Thank you for what you do.
Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help!:) If you try BBF, give yourself time to really use it. Once you get the hang of it, I suspect you may never go back:). Whenever I get a new camera (or borrow one), I setup BBF:).
RealWorld I’m looking forward to giving it a try. One question: do I need to put the auto focus operation in AI Servo? Or does it matter. Thanks again.
You do not have to stay in AI Servo but I would recommend doing so:). Why? This will allow you power and flexibility with the BBF. If you want to take a portrait, simply place the focal point on the eye (I suggest focusing on the eye for portraits:)) > press the back button to lock focus > release the back button > recompose if needed > take the shot:). If you are trying to photo a moving subject, place the focal point on the subject > press and HOLD the back button > take the shot(s):) ... AI Servo will easily work in both situations eliminating the need to think about what mode you are in or if you need to switch, etc. AF is controlled by your willingness to hold the back button:). As mentioned, once you start to use BBF, I suspect you will like it:).
Excellent Information. I have started using it and find the back button for AF so convenient. Thanks for creating this video and reiterating the benefit and usage of it.
That is odd I have same camera I always forget about this focus been wanting try it out myself someday I like see photographer take advantage of rotating lcd screen on back of camera
Hi Thanks for asking me for more feedback regarding the sound. That distortion that was happening on the last video is definitely not happening here. It’s much closer to the good sound found on the videos I mentioned before. The only thing I found was the “S”s sound a bit too cutting. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help other than telling you what my ears are telling me. Generally that’s the only concern I need to have, and then just tell the sound engineers “More of this. Less of that.” and they know what I mean and want, so, my technical knowledge in this area is fairly limited. Thanks again for the great content and keep looking forward to more All the best
I use 1: AE lock/AF because it will lock AE and i can move camera to the side and the focused object will be on normal exposion, this especially works when shooting against the sun.
I have a T5 and usually shoot manual, so AE lock is no use to me. But this video was very helpful so that I can have AI Servo mode but also lock focus to re-frame my shot. Thank you!! I had no idea this menu existed!
Clear and concise tutorial. Love it. New subee! I have been a Nikon gals for years and just recently got my first Canon for RUclips video needs, so have to learn functions and features of the Canon world now. ;)
Thanks for the post/feedback Maria!:) I just reviewed the Canon T7i ( ruclips.net/video/jgvPRGscehs/видео.html ) and had lots of fun:). My first modification to the camera? Back button focus:). Welcome to the channel and stay tuned as I have more videos on the way.
WWWOW!! Do you know what you've just done!? You've just blown my mind with this info, which the manual, with all its jargon, doesn't explain very well at all! I've just about given up on it, thinking the 600D that I had inherited from a dear relative some years ago, but only started learning to use now, didn't have that function. In fact, I didn't even know that this model was called a T6i in the US, so I started watching your video with little hope of satisfaction. What I also have to say, however, is that on my camera the * is the back button to which the AF is assigned, which doesn't have any other function, little used or otherwise, that I can find in Shooting mode anyway.
youre a fucking life saver. I finally ventured into using manual settings on my rebel t5 that my brother gave me a year ago. for some reason my auto focus doesnt work in manual and with my noviceness I wasted an entire night of shooting by trying to use the manual ring, changing zooms, touching my optical lens and having blurry photos by not remembering to focus. this makes it so much easier to get focus while taking a shot. fucking thank you!!!
I’m confused if I’m trying to shoot in manual, I can or cannot use back button focus. I ask this bc my left arm is paralyzed. i’m in need of help as I don’t understand. i have tripod but on a moving subject like a bird, please explain if back button focus. i can’t turn lens ring since i can only use right hand to hold camera . thanks for ANY help.🙏
RealWorld. Thank you. It is a Canon Rebel EOS T7. I did contact Canon and they said you cannot do back button focus on my model, which I find hard to believe.

Thanks for the post/feedback!:) Both Nikon and Canon are great but I like how Nikon has removed the AA (anti-aliasing) filter from their entry level line (the D3300 and D3400). The AA filter tends to inadvertently soften images and many photographers would like to see removed. Nikon removed the AA filter from their top-end line and they now remove it from they entry line which is great in my opinion. Canon is a beast when it comes to focus - something they have always done well in my opinion:). I do not think you would go wrong with either but if given the choice, I might lean towards Nikon.
