Man, I miss this rivalry. As everyone on this channel has said, Ryan Lochte is an incredible swimmer. Absolutely generational talent. Third most Olympic medals of all time after Spitz. Just a shame he swam in the same era as Phelps because Phelps was a little bit better. But both have said competing against the other pushed them to do better. They both brought out the best in each other, so maybe it’s a good thing Lochte was born when he was. It was a heck of a rivalry, from the same country too.
Both are amazing but always had felt bad for Lochte living in the shadow of Phelps and sadly getting caught up in the whole thing in Rio giving him negative press.

I think Lochte actually genuinely enjoyed competing with him. He loved having the motivation to beat him and was actually good friends with Phelps too
Lochte improved his underwaters to the point he got as good if not better than Phelps. Wonderful rivalry!

IMO the 2008 olympic trials 400 IM was the greatest race of their rivalry. It signified both the rise of Lochte, it justified the hype that Lochte might be the only one who could beat Phelps and it also asserted Phelps' dominance in the end.
It also shows most clearly the Lochte brings out the best in Phelps. All of his other races (except the 200 IM) were good not great. but the races where he faced Lochte he broke the WRs.
Eccept in the end Cavic beat him and not Lochte when it mattered.

Agreed, Nora. I feel like that was the perfect example of their rivalry. Except that when it came time for the finals Lochte almost always came up just a little short.

Why did the commentators in the 2nd race sound upset when lochte out touched phelps. Can’t they just be appreciate lochte’s greatness, and his rivalry with phelps?
Those were Korean commentators and they sounded disappointed cause Biedermann out touched Park I think

In the last 200 IM race phelps had such a fast finish because that was when he started testing out dolphin kicks at the end of the race. He didnt stick with it to Rio though, interesting idea.

Lochte was a monster between imortals......he was amazing if not for a phenom like Phelps he could have had a much better results in his carreer he got 2 in a lot of olympics races to Phelps

Thanks for asking! It was no doubt an interesting race but I felt like there was nothing special or significant about it apart from the fact that both Phelps and Lochte qualified to their 4th 200m IM in the Olympics.

Park Tae Hwan went from Korean hero to a disgrace. You can see by the Korean commentators just how much Park meant for Korean swimming until he blew it.

@@MariachyGamer Thanks for your comment. I just wanted to make sure that the video had the 'best' races between the two swimmers. A race in which Phelps dominates the entire field cannot really be seen as a 'good' race, rather a dominant race.

Well yea... His underwaters are really strong, his turns are fast, and his free and fly are amazing, Lochte is a really good breastroker, and a lot like me, he catches up to people ahead of him with his breastroke and he stays there, even pulling ahead with it. Either way they're both really good but Phelps just has the upper hand.
